①One winter morning, Tapiwa Chiwewe was driving to work in Johannesburg, South Africa. He noticed a haze (薄雾) hanging over the city and it didn’t take long for him to realize that it was the pollution we suffered.
②At that moment, Chiwewe felt it necessary to do something about it, but didn’t know what. He was a computer engineer and knew little about environmental science.
③He first did research on air pollution and found that it is the world’s biggest environmental health risk. He decided to work on it in a cooperative (合作的) way with scientists, officials, and engineers who helped him develop a deeper understanding of the situation, as well as an idea to improve it.
④Through years of work, Chiwewe and his coworkers from South Africa and China created an online air—quality decision support system. Based on historical and real—time data, the system can correctly predict air pollution and air quality, which can help people make better decisions about their daily movements, as well as help officials better manage their operations.
⑤Chiwewe learned an important lesson — “a lesson we all need to take to heart if we are to work towards a better future. Even if you’re not an expert in a particular field, your outside expertise may hold the key to solving problems within that field,” he said.
⑥What if Chiwewe hadn’t worried about researching the problem and do something about it? What if he had just hoped that someone, somewhere, was taking care of the matter? As Chiwewe said, “Why not just go ahead and deal with the problem as well as you can in your own way? You may be pleasantly surprised.”
21.What does the underlined “it” refer to in Paragraph 2?
A.The environmental science. B.The air pollution in the city.
C.The haze hanging over the city. D.The research on air pollution.
22.What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A.There is always something new to learn.
B.We should always wait for others to help us.
C.Taking actions yourself is better than waiting.
D.Doing research first helps experts solve problems.
23.How is the passage organized? (①=Paragraph 1 ②=Paragraph 2. )
A. B. C. D.
24.What’s the passage mainly about?
A.Chiwewe’s special job journey. B.Using your skills to solve problems.
C.The process of creating a system. D.Taking actions now.

What would you do if you walked up to a robot with a human-like head and it smiled at you first? You’d likely smile back. But how does a robot know that you will smile back? Now, Hod Lipson at Columbia University and his team have created a robot called Emo that can predict (预测) someone will smile about 0.9 seconds before they do, and smile at the same time.
Emo is able to make different facial expressions The AI-driven robot has cameras in the eyes, and it uses one AI model to look at human faces and predict their facial expressions, and the other to work out how to make expressions on its own face.
To train the robot, the team put Emo in front of the camera and let it do lots of movements. After a few hours, the robot learned the relationship between its facial expressions and the computer commands (指令). This is what the team calls “self-modeling”.
Then the team played videos of human facial expressions for Emo to watch carefully. After studying, Emo could predict people’s facial expressions by catching tiny variations in their faces before they were about to smile.
The team is now working to put a large language model like ChatGPT into Emo. As robots become more like humans, we are moving closer to a future where talking to a robot is as easy as talking to a friend.
25.The writer starts this passage by ______.
A.listing numbers B.telling a story C.using a saying D.asking a question
26.What does Emo use to look at human faces and predict expressions?
A.Cameras in its eyes and AI models.
B.A large language model and a mirror.
C.Computer commands and self-modeling.
D.Its own feelings and past experiences.
27.What does the underlined word “variations” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Colors. B.Memories. C.Mistakes. D.Changes.
28.The best title for the passage is “______”.
A.How Robots Learn to Talk Like Humans
B.The History of AI Robots in Universities
C.A Robot That Can Predict Human Smiles
D.Why People Like Smiling at Robots

Do you know what music people like listening to? If you ask them, you may get many different answers. Why do different people have different musical preferences (偏好)? Researchers from Cambridge University made a study about these questions.
In the study, researchers discovered musical preferences are connected to personality. Outgoing people prefer danceable music. Country music fans are more serious in their jobs. One of the findings is quite interesting. The researchers thought that stressed people should like sad music or soft music. However, they prefer rock music. Perhaps they like to listen to this kind of music to relax.
The researchers also found that climates (气候) may influence people’s musical preferences. People in hot weather are more outgoing and prefer danceable music. This may be a result of longer daylight hours. The longer the daylight hours are, the more likely people are to listen to danceable music.
Of course, nothing is clear-cut. We may not group people simply by their musical tastes. The study just showed us that people of different cultures are more similar than we think and music is really like a bridge.
29.How does the writer start the text?
A.By listing numbers. B.By giving examples.
C.By asking questions. D.By telling a story.
30.What kind of music do stressed people prefer?
A.Pop music. B.Country music. C.Folk music. D.Rock music.
31.Which paragraph shows the relationship between daylight hours and the preference for danceable music?
A. B.
C. D.
32.What is the purpose of the passage?
A.To give us some advice on music.
B.To show some special tastes of music.
C.To introduce some facts on musical preferences.
D.To encourage people to dance to music.
33.What’s the best structure (结构) of the text?
A. B. C. D.

Many people lose interest in exercising when winter comes, even if they are active in summer. If you feel this way, you’re not alone. There is real science behind this winter laziness.
There are several key reasons why winter exercise is harder. First, seasonal affective disorder (SAD), a type of low mood (情绪) connected to shorter, darker days in winter, often makes people lose interest in going to the gym.
The UK’s National Health Service also points out that less sunlight leads to low vitamin D levels for most people. Vitamin D is a must for healthy bones and muscles (肌肉), and studies show less vitamin D can slow down muscle growth and lead to poorer sports results.
Cold temperatures, along with wind and wetness, add to the difficulty: they make people feel exercise more tiring than usual. One study found that people who stood in the cold before cycling performed 30% worse than usual.
Besides, cold air makes your muscles tight (紧绷的), which makes you more likely to get hurt. Warming up your muscles before exercise can help, but it also uses more energy. What’s more, after exercising in the cold, you will feel hungrier than you would have been if you’d exercised in warmer weather.
Luckily, there are easy ways to deal with this laziness in winter. BBC Sports suggests thinking of sports as “me time”: exercising with friends, wearing warm clothes, doing indoor sports instead of outdoor ones, and giving yourself a small reward (奖赏) when you exercise. Sticking to a certain exercise plan helps a lot. Even a short period of exercise during your lunch break can be helpful.
34.Which best shows the relationship between vitamin D and muscle growth?
A. B.
C. D.
35.Which way is suggested by BBC Sports to deal with winter laziness?
A.Changing the daily exercise plan. B.Keeping warm while doing exercise.
C.Getting into a habit of exercising alone. D.Enjoying outdoor sports to get sunshine.
36.What can be the best title of the text?
A.Bye, Winter Laziness! Hi, Me time! B.Be Brave and Active in Winter!
C.More Vitamin D, More Winter Energy! D.No Worries! Winter Laziness is OK!
If you are thinking about taking up running to burn off those holiday pounds, you might want to buy a pair of running shoes. 37 .
This is the result of new research by the scientists at Glasgow University in Scotland. In fact, the researchers say running in shoes may be harmful to our bodies. The research team found that 75 percent of the runners in their study experienced something called “heel strike (脚跟触地)”. 38 This happens around 1,000 times for every 1.5km when we run. The scientists say running barefoot is more natural. People who run without shoes do not land on their heels and this avoids sending shock waves to their bodies. 39 .
The research helps explain why many long-distance runners run so well barefoot. The scientists say, “Humans have been running for millions of years, but the modern running shoe was not invented until the 1970s.” 40 Running barefoot is common in many parts of the world, especially in Africa. Of course if you take up running barefoot, you should start slowly in order to avoid injury.
A.This is when our heels hit the ground too hard and shock our bones.
B.Barefoot runners may be at less risk of injury than those who wear running shoes.
C.Running barefoot might be better for you than running in shoes.
D.Many people choose to run in the morning to keep healthy.
E.They added, “For most of human history, humans were either barefoot or wore the simplest shoes.”

Near Weizhou Island in Guangxi, a group of scientists are working under the sea. They fix small baby corals (珊瑚) onto special frames (框架) on the ocean floor. These baby corals come from a lab at Guangxi University, where they are grown 61 .
The coral reefs (珊瑚礁) here have 62 big problems. In 1984, 42% 63 the area was covered by living corals, but by 2015, that number dropped to just 10%. 64 solve this problem, the team built a special underwater area to grow corals. They collected 65 pieces of coral, studied them, and later put them back into the sea.
So far, the team has 66 over 100 man-made coral homes and planted 10,000 corals. Even with difficulties, more than 80% of 67 are still alive. Many corals have grown from 10 cm to 30 cm long. A recent study found that after 68 rebuild the reefs, local (当地的) fishermen caught five times more fish than before.
Coral reefs are like underwater cities for sea life. They protect nearly 25% of ocean 69 , even though they cover only 1-2% of the ocean floor. Saving corals helps both sea living things 70 people. I’m Paul. I’m going to talk about two important persons in my life — Mrs. Swift and Carter. Mrs. Swift lives next door. When I was little and my mom was working, she used to look after me. She used to make cakes and pies for me. Now she doesn’t cook so much. She starts to go to the sports club for old people in her free time. I don’t see her so often now. I really miss the old days. Carter was my schoolmate in primary school and he is one year older than me. I’ve known him since I was seven. We became good friends because we were interested in the same things: computers and football, mostly. We used to make model planes together at the school science club. Now we’re in different senior high schools. Next year I’m probably going to be an exchange student in London, but I’m sure our relationship won’t change.
A
①One winter morning, Tapiwa Chiwewe was driving to work in Johannesburg, South Africa.
【答案】21.B 22.C 23.A 24.B
根据文章第一段“He noticed a haze (薄雾) hanging over the city and it didn’t take long for him to realize that it was the pollution we suffered.”和第二段“At that moment, Chiwewe felt it necessary to do something about it”可知,Chiwewe意识到城市上空的雾霾是污染问题,因此“it”指的是“城市的空气污染”。故选B。
根据文章最后一段“What if Chiwewe hadn’t worried about researching the problem and do something about it? What if he had just hoped that someone, somewhere, was taking care of the matter? As Chiwewe said, ‘Why not just go ahead and deal with the problem as well as you can in your own way? You may be pleasantly surprised.’”
故选A。

【答案】25.D 26.A 27.D 28.C
根据“What would you do if you walked up to a robot with a human-like head and it smiled at you first?”
根据“The AI-driven robot has cameras in the eyes, and it uses one AI model to look at human faces and predict their facial expressions…” 故选A。
根据“After studying, Emo could predict people’s facial expressions by catching tiny variations in their faces before they were about to smile.”
根据“…created a robot called Emo that can predict (预测) someone will smile about 0.9 seconds before they do, and smile at the same time.”
C
A. B. C. D.
【答案】29.C 30.D 31.A 32.C 33.D
根据“Do you know what music people like listening to?”
根据“The researchers thought that stressed people should like sad music or soft music. However, they prefer rock music.”
根据“The longer the daylight hours are, the more likely people are to listen to danceable music.” 故选A。
根据“Why do different people have different musical preferences (偏好)? Researchers from Cambridge University made a study about these questions.”

故选A。

A
①One winter morning, Tapiwa Chiwewe was driving to work in Johannesburg, South Africa.

This is because reefs also protect coasts from storms. Weizhou Island’s story shows that with hard work we can heal (治愈) the ocean together.
