A MOTHER'S DAY SURPRISE
The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother's Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jema found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jef turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jef to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff's hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.

练习:
1(2025年新高考1卷)
My wife and I wanted to share our new home with family and friends by hosting a small gathering in the early summer. She had prepared lots of snacks, while my job was to have the backyard in order.
There was plenty of space for the kids to run and play. There was just one thing I hadn’t counted on: My brother chose to bring his dog Toby, a 50-pound ball of fire. Though friendly, he could easily knock over my niece’s small boys and my six-month-old granddaughter. So, when my brother showed up, I asked him to watch Toby and keep him outside.
My plan was working out just fine. Toby was using up his energy by running back and forth in the backyard and giving the kids plenty of room. Unexpectedly, after supper, the weather changed. It started to rain and everyone went indoors.
It was an awkward moment. I didn’t want Toby to be running around in the house, and my brother wasn’t happy with driving home with a wet dog. Eventually, my brother decided to leave rather than force the issue.
A few days passed, and I hadn’t heard anything from my brother. I texted him and expressed wishes for him to come out again. His reply came as a surprise — a shock, actually: “Not a chance.” Clearly, he was unhappy over the way we had parted. After all, I had left him little choice. Well, he’ll get over it, I reasoned.
Two months passed. My wife suggested I get in touch with my brother, but I resisted, thinking he should call first. However, my conscience kept bothering me. I tried to put myself in my brother’s shoes. He was facing health issues and his wife of thirty-five years had passed away a few months earlier. Toby was his constant companion, the one who kept him going.
Para. 1:I realized it was me who was at fault.

Mr Lim had been in a bad mood ever since he lost his job three months ago. His efforts to find another job had been fruitless as well. To make ends meet, his wife, Mrs Lim, had to take on an overseas job offer. This meant that Mr Lim was left to tend to his two children, Luke and Lisa, all by himself. Seeing their father being so unhappy every day, Luke and Lisa wanted badly to cheer him up. On the day of Mr. Lim’s birthday, the children decided to turn their intention into action.
“Hurry, Luke! Dad will be home any time now! Let’s hide to surprise him!” Lisa said. After placing the birthday cake they had bought on the table, something that Luke and Lisa were sure Mr Lim would not have expected, they hid under it. It had taken the children many weeks to save enough money to buy their father’s favourite cake. They smiled at each other when the smell of fresh paint reached their nose. Luke and Lisa had painted on their dining area’s wall, intending that to be decoration for Mr Lim’s surprise birthday party.
Moments later, the main door creaked open. Suddenly, a loud shout filled the air! “Who messed up the wall on purpose?” Mr Lim shouted angrily. On hearing those words, Luke and Lisa stared at each other in shock. As the elder brother, Luke knew he had to protect Lisa. Taking a deep breath, Luke slowly moved out from under the table. Before he could say a word, Mr Lim gave him an earful. Hoping to clear up the misunderstanding, Luke said, “Dad, you’re wrong. We just wanted to...” “Don’t you dare give me excuses!” Mr Lim raised his voice. Then, with great force, he threw the newspaper he had been holding at the dining table. It hit the birthday cake, ruining it! Seeing that, Luke’s heart broke. He cried. “Dad...we...we’re sorry! We wanted to give...give you a birthda y sur...surprise,” Lisa explained in between cries, after moving out from her hiding spot.
Para. 1:Hearing that, Mr Lim fell silent for a moment before approaching Luke.

The first time we set eyes on the beautiful dress “Big Red”, Father, Mother and I were walking slowly through the freshly fallen snow on our way to Hubble's Hardware store on Main Street.
The colorfully decorated window display held the best toys ever and some other things. And they were all placed pleasantly beneath the breathtaking dress of Big Red. Mother's eyes were glued to the massive flame of red satin, dotted with twinkling stars.
“My goodness,” she managed to say in dreamlike wonder. “Would you just look at that dress!” Then, totally out of character, Mother unexpectedly danced on the slippery sidewalk. Beneath the heavy, grey wool coat that she had worn every winter for as long as I could remember, Mother lost her balance and fell clumsily. Father quickly caught her.
Her cheeks redder than usual, Mother blamed dad for laughing. “Oh, stop that!” she ordered, as my father swept the snow from her coat. “What a silly dress to be displayed there in the window of Eaton's!” she shook her head in disbelief. “Who on earth would want such a brightly-colored dress? It is too expensive.” As we continued to walk down the street, Mother turned back for one more look. “My goodness! You'd think they'd display something that a person could use!”
Christmas was around the corner and the red dress was soon forgotten. Mother was not the one to wish for, or spend money on things that were not practical. “There are things we need more than this,” she'd always say, or, “There are things we need more than that.”
Father, on the other hand, liked to buy things whenever the budget allowed. Of course, he'd get a scolding for his occasional spending like this, but it was all done with the best intention.
On our last trip to town before Christmas, we were driving up Main Street when Mother suddenly exclaimed in surprise, “Would you just look at that!” She pointed excitedly as Dad drove past Eaton's. “That big red dress is gone,” she said in disbelief. “It's actually gone.”
Para 1:Dad looked quickly and smiled, “Yes, it is not there!” He glanced at me with a playful wink that I instantly understood.

Everyone loved Cinderella, but I loved her ugly stepsister.
The sidewalk was filled with shoppers as my mother and I hurried to the department store. I raised my neck for a look at the holiday window display, but at the age of six I was too small to see around the grown-ups with their winter coats and packages. When at last we reached the store, I stood with my eyes widened. “Look, Mother,” I shouted, pressing my hands against the glass, “Cinderella.” Before my eyes was the most beautiful doll I had ever seen! She wore a fairy princess suit made of shining red silk. I knew if I lifted her skirt I would see her crystal shoes. The tiny tiara fastened to her silky golden hair shone.
“If only she were mine,” I dreamed. “We’d have tea parties, share secrets and dance with a handsome prince.” But to my disappointment, my mother guided me away from the window, explaining that she and my father could not afford such an expensive doll. “But there will be a very special gift under the tree for you on Christmas morning, Madge,” she said. “I promise.”
Later that week I leaned against Mother’s sewing machine, watching the needle flash up and down. “Bet you don’t know what it is!” She joked, holding up the cloth for me to see.
“My Christmas doll!” I yelled. It was still in the early stages but I could make out the head, neck and body. “So much to my surprise!” Mother laughed as I danced around the room, already pretending Cinderella and I were at the ball. It wouldn’t be long now.
My excitement grew with each passing day. Mother continued to work on the doll, and whenever I walked into the room she would hide it under a pillow. I could tell by her smile she was pleased with her progress. On Christmas morning I jumped out of bed, ran down the hall and quickly arrived at the living room where the Christmas tree was placed.
Para. 1:There, underneath the tree, was a beautifully packed gift box.

They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.

I’d been so focused on my own worries about the gathering that I ignored my brother’s greatest need. He wasn’t just upset about Toby — he felt abandoned when I pushed him away in his darkest days. I recalled how he’d stayed up with me all night when I lost my job years ago. Grabbing my phone, I left a voice message, my voice trembling as I apologized for my selfishness. I admitted I’d forgotten that family isn’t about perfect gatherings, but about standing by each other, even when it’s inconvenient.
Para. 2:With the biscuits my wife had made, I arrived at my brother’s door. The door opened slowly, and Toby bounded out first, licking my hand excitedly. My brother stood there, eyes softening at the sight of us. I handed him the biscuits and said, “I’m sorry I made you feel unwelcome.” He sighed and let me in. As we sat together, he talked about how Toby comforted him on lonely nights. That day, we didn’t just mend a quarrel. We rediscovered that true brotherhood lies in forgiving mistakes and cherishing the people who stick by you, no matter what.

Para. 1:Hearing that, Mr Lim fell silent for a moment before approaching Luke. His angry expression faded, replaced by a look of shock and then guilt. He knelt down, gently wiping the tears off Luke’s cheeks and pulling Lisa into a tight hug. Tears swelled up in his eyes as he stared at the painted wall — little handprints and clumsy drawings of their family were scattered across it. “I’m so sorry,” he whispered. He admitted he’d been so caught up in his own frustration that he’d lashed out at the two people who loved him most. He held their small hands, promising to be more patient and share his worries with them from then on.
Para. 2:After the tension eased, Luke and Lisa sang a birthday song for Mr Lim. Their voices were a little shaky at first, but soon grew loud and clear, filling the room with warmth. Mr Lim clapped along, his heart swelling with love. Though the cake was ruined, he cut a piece anyway and fed it to the kids, laughing as cream dotted their faces. Later, he took a photo of the painted wall. That day, Mr Lim realized the best birthday gift wasn’t a fancy cake, but the love that turned a messy wall into a precious memory. It taught him that family’s warmth is the strongest support when life gets tough.

Para 1:Dad looked quickly and smiled, “Yes, it is not there!” He glanced at me with a playful wink that I instantly understood. On our way home, Mother kept chattering about how the dress was too flashy and impractical, but her fingers kept twisting the strap of her bag unconsciously. That night, I passed the living room and saw Dad huddled over the phone, his voice soft as he confirmed something with the store. Later, he rummaged through his toolbox and mended an old radio to sell, which he’d been keeping for years. I realized then that he was quietly making room in the budget for the dress that Mother pretended to dislike.
Para 2:I'll never forget that Christmas morning when Father handed Mother a box. Her hands trembled slightly as she unwrapped it, and when the big red dress unfolded, her breath caught. The satin shimmered like fire in the morning light, and the star decorations sparkled. Mother stroked the fabric gently, tears welling up in her eyes. She put it on and twirled around, looking more radiant than I’d ever seen her. “You silly man,” she laughed through tears, hugging Father tightly. That day, I learned that love isn’t always in grand words. Sometimes it’s a secret trip to the store, a mended radio, and a red dress that holds a lifetime of quiet affection from a husband to his wife.

Para. 1:There, underneath the tree, was a beautifully packed gift box. My hands trembled as I tore off the wrapping paper. When I lifted the lid, my heart skipped a beat—not because of joy, but surprise. The doll wore no shining red silk suit, nor a tiny tiara. Its dress was a plain brown linen one, the fabric a little rough. Its hair was short and curly like wool, and there were no crystal shoes, just a pair of scuffed cloth boots. It didn’t look like the elegant Cinderella in the window at all. Instead, it reminded me of Cinderella’s stepsister in the storybook, the one everyone laughed at for being clumsy and plain. I stared at it, my excitement fading away.
Para. 2:But I could see Mother watching me, with an eager look on her face. I suddenly noticed the faint dark circles under her eyes and the calluses on her fingers—she’d stayed up late every night after doing housework to sew the doll. I thought of how she’d saved every penny and searched through old cloth piles to make this gift. I hugged the doll tightly to my chest and smiled brightly. “Mom, she’s perfect! I love her more than the store’s Cinderella!” I exclaimed. Mother’s face lit up. That Christmas, I learned that the stepsister wasn’t ugly at all, and the doll made by Mother wasn’t plain either. Love sewn into every stitch is the most precious decoration, making even the simplest gift shine brighter than any crystal shoe.
