Ernest Hemingway, the son of a doctor and a music teacher, was born in 1899 in Oak Park, Illinois. Hemingway's father taught him on how to hunt and fish, two activities Hemingway loved throughout his life.
Instead of going to college, Hemingway became a reporter for the Kansas City Star. Later, in Europe, he worked as a driver for the Italian army until he was wounded and shipped home, where he again wrote for newspapers. Two years later, he moved to Paris, where he hoped to improve his writing. There he became friends with other American writers, including Gertrude Stein and F. Scott Fitzgerald.
Hemingway developed a style of writing that was simple and direct. He chose words sparingly(俭省地), avoided using adjectives, and trusted the readers to understand the meaning of his writing. As he put it, “I always try to write on the principle(原则)of the iceberg(冰山). There is seven eighths of it under water for every part that shows.” This style continues to influence writers today. In his career, which lasted about 40 years, Hemingway earned the Pulitzer Prize and the Nobel Prize. He was one of the finest writers of the twentieth century.
For a while Ernest Hemingway lived in Key West, Florida, where he had nearly 50 cats. One of them was a cat with six toes(脚趾), which a ship's captain had given him. Today his Key West home is a museum, and many cats still live there. Some of them are children of Hemingway's sixtoed cat. Hemingway was married four times and had three sons. He died in 1961.

As readers, we are always looking for ways to improve: we want to read more, read faster and achieve a better understanding. Improvement sometimes happens by breaking bad reading habits. However, many people don't realize the problems they have in the reading process. 16._
Reading at a wrong speed
Many readers pay little or no attention to their reading speed and that is a mistake. Whether you are reading too fast or too slow, the reading experience will be badly influenced. 17._ Reading at a speed that is too high can influence your understanding of what you read.
Not paying attention to your reading environment
18._ Not choosing your location properly can lead to plenty of problems. For example, a noisy environment makes it hard for you to focus on the things you are reading. That will cause you to read the same passages over and over again. Wherever you read, make sure the location isn't too noisy, that the lighting is good, and that you won't be interrupted(打扰).
19._
Probably the most common bad reading habit is doing it without paying attention.Focusing on other things while reading is going to badly influence our performance in many ways. 20._ Besides, we will remember less from what we read, and our understanding level will be much lower.
