When the Smiths returned home, Mrs. Smith stopped over at the Browns’ house, and held a basket of kale.
“Your family was such a help!” Mrs. Smith said, “I wanted to give you some of our kale to say thank you.”

In the Browns’ kitchen, the family looked at the kale. “So we have to eat all of that kale?” Jim asked. “I think so,” Mrs. Brown said. “But none of us like vegetables like this,” Jim said.

Do you want to make dinner by yourself? Cooking isn’t something only a few people can do. Everyone—even children—can learn to enjoy. A study shows that people are healthier when they eat home-made food.
________
Some people think that the kitchen is not a good place for children. They want to keep children safe, and they worry that children will get hurt. There are a lot of sharp (锋利的) and hot things in the kitchen!
But learning to cook may make you safer. When you cook, you learn about what can be dangerous. You find out what to touch (触摸) and how to touch it. As you learn to cook, you can also learn how to keep yourself safe in the kitchen.
So Much to Learn
People may say that they are too busy and don’t have time to teach children to cook. They worry that it will take longer to cook dinner with children in the kitchen. You can start by doing easy jobs, such as washing fruits and vegetables. Then you can try making cold foods, such as salads. Later, with the help of an adult (成人), you can start making hot meals.

Form Lifelong Habits
By spending family time on a physical activity together, you encourage (鼓励) your children to exercise and build lifelong habits. When children see physical activities as an enjoyable thing to do together, they may keep family exercise as a family-time tradition as they grow up.
________
Children get more life skills at home than they do anywhere else. Teamwork is taught and encouraged in sports. By exercising together, you’re encouraging teamwork and working together to reach a common goal, which helps teach the importance of goal setting as a team.
Bring Encouragement
Parents are great encouragers in education and sports. You can give your children encouragement when doing family sports. Studies show that family encouragement influences (影响) children’s mental health in a good way. Good family bonding (联结) with family encouragement builds confidence (自信) in children.
It may be all well and good to think about exercising together as a family, but it may be difficult to get started. Here is some advice for you.
● Take turns on who gets to choose the physical activity. Maybe you enjoy traditional exercise while your child wants to dance. On your exercising day, encourage your child to follow along. Then allow your child to choose the next family physical activity.

More music, please!
Albert Einstein, a famous scientist in the early 1900s, loved to play the violin. Einstein often played his violin when he had a hard time working out a difficult science problem. He believed that playing the violin helped him find answers. He thought there was more to music than just being something fun to listen to. And many scientists today agree with Einstein. They find that music has a power that’s not just for making us feel happy.
Some scientists think that playing music can help your brain (大脑) work better. When you play an instrument, you are giving your brain a workout. For example, guitar players have to do many things at once when playing music. They use their eyes to read the music, their fingers to pick at the strings, and their ears to listen to the notes that they are playing. Different parts of their bodies are working together. This helps their brains get stronger and can help them pay attention, work out problems, and remember things more easily.
You don’t have to play an instrument to feel good. Just listening to music can also make you happy. If you’re having a bad day, music can make you feel better. When you listen to your favorite music, your brain lets out something that makes you feel good. Listening to light music can also be relaxing. A soft song can help you relax when you are unhappy. For example, many people sing quiet songs to babies, because it can help them stop crying and sleep well.
Studies also show that people feel less pain (痛苦) when they are listening to music they enjoy. When people start listening to music, they pay less attention to other things. Because people are not thinking so much about the pain, they do not feel it as strongly. People have found that the more you like the music you’re hearing, the less pain you feel!
34.When did Einstein often play his violin?
35.Why can playing music help your brain work better?
36.What do people do to help babies stop crying and sleep well?
37.When do you listen to music? Why?

Why?

At first, it may take a little more time to help children learn to cook. But they will get better when they practice (练习) more. After some time, they may even help cooking go faster!
You can start by doing easy jobs, such as washing fruits and vegetables. Then you can try making cold foods, such as salads. Later, with the help of an adult (成人), you can start making hot meals.
Cooking also helps with schoolwork. You need to use maths to work out how much money you save when you cook at home. When you read a recipe (菜谱), you can learn new words. You may not see them in schoolwork.
Be Creative (有创造力的)
Part of cooking is learning to make food look good to eat. When food looks good, people think it tastes (尝起来) better. Making food look good is a way of being creative. You can arrange (排列) fruits or vegetables by color. Or you can make a pancake with a funny face of berries for eyes and a mouth!
Not everyone will become a cook. But everyone can learn to cook. What other thing teaches so much and tastes so good?
27.Which of the following would be the best heading for Paragraph 2?
A.Be Busy in the Kitchen. B.Be Happy in the Kitchen.

Physical activity is important and we often plan to do it. However, we don’t often think about making time to exercise as a family. While we find time for family games or movie nights, we often forget family sports. Family exercise may seem silly, but there are many benefits (益处).
● Staying safe is always something important to think about for not only children but parents as well. Choose an activity with your child’s abilities in mind. If some of your family members are not good at running, try to slow down or have them ride a bike along.
Family exercise can be both fun and a good chance for bonding. Remember to always choose the activity as a family and stay safe.

Why?

【导语】本文是一篇议论文,通过讲述爱因斯坦拉小提琴激发思维的例子,探讨了音乐对大脑和情绪的益处。
34.根据“Einstein often played his violin when he had a hard time working out a difficult science problem.”可知,爱因斯坦在解决科学难题时经常拉小提琴。故填He often played his violin when he had a hard time working out a difficult science problem.
35.根据“This helps their brains get stronger and can help them pay attention, work out problems, and remember things more easily.”可知,演奏音乐有助于我们的大脑变得更强壮,可以帮助我们集中注意力,解决问题,更容易记住事情,从而帮助我们更好地工作。故填Because playing music helps our brains get stronger and can help us pay attention, work out problems, and remember things more easily.
36.根据“For example, many people sing quiet songs to babies, because it can help them stop crying and sleep well.”可知,人们给婴儿唱安静的歌曲,帮助婴儿停止哭泣并且睡得好。故填They sing quiet songs to babies.
