Floods can bring great danger. When heavy rain falls for many days, rivers may overflow. The water can destroy houses, carry away cars, and even hurt people. Here are some important ways to stay safe before, during, and after a flood.
Flood Warnings
First, listen to the radio or watch TV for flood alerts(警报). These alerts tell us what’s coming. A flood alert means “be careful”—floods might come soon. A flood warning means “get ready”—floods are on the way. A red flood warning is the most serious: it means “act now”—you must leave your home quickly to stay safe!

What to Do Before a Flood
Gather an emergency kit(应急包). It should have enough food and water for three days, a first-aid kit and a flashlight. If it’s safe, turn off the electricity and gas to stop accidents. Move important things like family photos, and valuable things to higher places, such as shelves or the top floor.
What to Do During a Flood
Never walk or swim in floodwaters. It may look shallow(浅的), but it can hide deep holes, sharp objects, or dirty things that makes you sick. Even a little water can knock you down. If water enters your home, go to the highest floor or the roof. Call for help using a phone, and wave a bright cloth if rescuers(救援者) are near.
