【答案】
Travel is the best extension of reading, for it turns abstract words into vivid experiences. Only by combining both can we gain deeper insights into the world.
Last summer, I visited Guilin with my family. We took an amazing journey along Li River. Surrounded by the misty mountains and clear water, I finally understood the poetic lines about its beauty that I had read in class for years.
This trip taught me that reading lays the foundation of knowledge, while traveling polishes it into wisdom. They are equally precious on the way to growth.

读后续写
1. Nature, while beautiful, could also be unpredictable and merciless. But most importantly, we bear in mind that in the darkest times, there’s always a light at the end of the tunnel, just like Mrs. Evans’ cabin light.
One bright summer day, my friend Peter and I decided to take an adventure into the unexplored paths of the Great Smoky Mountains. Blessed with rich biodiversity and fascinating landscapes, the national park seemed a perfect get-away. Little did we know that our casual(随意的) hike would soon turn into an unexpected personal incident, forever kept in our memories.
We set off early in the morning, equipped with our backpacks and a map that was supposed to guide us through the winding paths. The sun was up, casting long shadows on the forest floor as we set off on our journey. We trekked(艰难行走), laughed, and wondered at the beauty of nature around us.
As we trekked through the thick forests, taking in the natural wonders around us, we couldn’t help but feel a sense of adventure coursing through our body. The path was rough and rocky, but we persisted through the challenging landscape.
Midway through our exploration, we came upon a breathtaking waterfall, its shining water’s pouring down the rocks in a quiet and peaceful melody. We sat down by the water’s edge, taking a moment to get lost in the beauty of nature. The cool mist from the waterfall surrounded us, and we felt refreshed and energetic.
As the day went on, we trekked deeper into the wilderness, eager to explore every corner of this natural paradise. We were so absorbed in the beauty of nature that we just didn’t notice our way and it seemed that we could not find the way back to the familiar part of the forest.
Frightened, we hurried to find our way back but the thick forests and winding paths only served to confuse us further. We tried to remember any possible signs that might lead us back. No sooner had we celebrated our return to the clear paths than something worse happened.

The trail that was once so clear became a muddy mess, making it impossible to go on. We tried to consult our map, but it was too late; we got lost in the wildness. Hours passing, our attempts to find the trail turned out to be in vain. With the cold creeping in, despair started to set in.
Just when we were about to give up, a weak light appeared in the distance. Curiosity overpowered our fear, and we decided to follow it. When we drew nearer, we saw a small log cabin, lights shining from its windows. Knocking on the door, an elderly woman, Mrs. Evans, welcomed us with a warm smile. She was a retired ranger who had chosen to live her twilight years in the heart of the mountains. She offered us shelter for the night, and the next morning, guided us back to the main trail. This incident strengthened our friendship and taught us the importance of resilience and hope. The experience was beyond expectation, terrifying, but enlightening all the same.

2. My childhood was anything but ordinary — a wonderland of surprises and laughter, thanks to my family. Loving, sweet, and endlessly entertaining, my parents were also gloriously absent-minded. A family trip we took when I was fourteen perfectly tells a lot about this.
My family’s cross-country road trip was Dad’s “masterpiece” — a 10-day journey from Chicago to California via Route 66. Mom called it “character-building”; I dubbed it “survival training”. Dad, the self-proclaimed “King of Spontaneity(随性),” refused to use GPS, relying instead on a 1990s paper map. Mom, always the dreamer, packed three novels and a bag of mismatched socks but forgot essentials like sunscreen and bandaids. I sat in the backseat, alternated between admiring desert sunsets and groaning every time Dad missed an exit, which happened roughly every two hours.
Halfway through Arizona, disaster struck. As night fell, Dad’s “scenic shortcut” to the Grand Canyon turned into our undoing. The paved road dissolved into a rutted trail that led to a lone cactus(仙人掌) farm. As Dad flipped the map upside down, muttering about “misprinted”. Mom sighed, “Adventure is just a wrong turn with a view!” I clutched my seatbelt. “If we die here,” I announced, “I’m haunting this map.”
That night, we camped under the starry sky. Mom tried roasting marshmallows but set her hat on fire. Dad’s “waterproof” tent leaked during a surprise drizzle. I huddled in the car, laughing until our sides hurt. The next morning, Mom found a postcard in her novel — a picture of cactuses. She’d bought it days ago. “For the memories,” she said, winking. Dad groaned. Shaking my head, I looked in the near distance at the cactus farm. A striking mark hanging on a giant cactus read, “Best Cactus, Best Memories”.

【答案】One possible version:
Suddenly, I found the cactus looked familiar. It was the exact same one from Mom’s misplaced postcard — the spiky silhouette against a pink desert sky. I burst out laughing, pointing at the “Best Cactus, Best Memories” sign. Dad squinted at the postcard, then at the farm, and groaned, “We’ve been circling this place for hours!” Mom, ever the optimist clapped her hands. “It’s fate! Let’s take a family photo!” And so, there we were, grinning like fools in front of a cactus farm, our detour immortalized. Even Dad’s grumbling couldn’t ruin the moment. The absurdity of it all — the wrong turns, the flaming hat, the leaky tent — felt like magic. This wasn’t just a road trip; it was us in our messy, hilarious glory.
We set off again, with a cactus in the trunk. Mom had impulsively bought a tiny potted one from the farm, insisting it was a “souvenir of resilience.” Dad muttered about root systems and trunk space but surrendered when she named it “Spike.” The rest of the trip unfolded in classic family fashion. Dad took three more wrong turns, Mom read her novels aloud (ignoring Dad’s protests), and Spike the cactus became our silent, prickly co-pilot. By the time we reached California, the car was a disaster zone of mismatched socks and candy wrappers — but we were hopelessly, joyfully. And as Mom would say, that was the best destination of all.

3. It was 1972, my family had taken a summer vacation from Kansas to Florida, with an exciting day planned at Disney World. My mother, father and two younger sisters, along with my sixty-seven-year-old Grandma Betty and myself, finally arrived at the holy grail(圣杯) of all amusement parks, and we girls were beside ourselves with expectation.
To be honest, I thought my grandma was, too. She hadn’t traveled much in her life and certainly had never been anywhere as exciting as Disney World! After the second ride, we all got off and got ready to change to the next one when one of us looked around and noticed that Grandma Betty wasn’t with us. This was alarming for many reasons, the most important being that Grandma Betty had limited vision and couldn’t read signs well. She had also started to show some signs of confusion. She could easily find herself lost in her own hometown, not to mention “The Most Magical Place on Earth”!
We looked everywhere for her but couldn’t see her, and obviously she could not see or hear us. Cellphones didn’t exist at that time, so there was no help there. Anyone who has been to Disney knows how crowded and busy the park is. It’s pretty easy for a child to get lost in there, but we didn’t think it would be that easy to misplace a grandma!
My mother told us stay in that spot while she went to the “Missing Children” station to report her lost mother. We impatiently waited until she came back and said that she had given them a description, so we might as well move to the next destination.
As the day came to an end, we struggled to Disney’s town square, hoping we might find her there while watching the Electrical Parade(游行), the beautiful parade of lights, music and Disney characters. I was sitting on the ground and watching the moving parade. Along came Mickey Mouse! And then Minnie Mouse! And then Daffy Duck and Cinderella!

【答案】
And then along came Grandma Betty! There she was in the middle of the Disney parade, literally marching in all her glory, keeping beat with the band. She was nodding and waving at the crowd, looking pleased with herself! I called out to my mom and pointed toward Grandma. My mom rushed into the middle of the parade group and caught my grandma’s arm. Grandma looked over, somewhat surprised to see a familiar face, and walked out of the line of Disney characters.
We asked her why she was in the parade. “A parade?” she was surprised. She didn’t know that she was in a parade! When she saw the crowd of people all headed in one direction, she figured that if she walked with them, she could possibly find all of us! Everyone was waving at her, so she waved back, thinking people here were certainly friendly! She didn’t know she was one of the rare few who got to participate in that world-famous Disney parade, perhaps having the most magical time of us all!

4. Christmas was coming. This year, my dad suggested that our family pack up and drive 500 miles north to celebrate the New Year’s holiday at our 600-square-foot lake cabin(小木屋) in northern Michigan.
At first, I was hesitant. The cabin was awesome in the summer. It was our favorite spot for boating, fishing, swimming, water skiing, and tubing. Hanging out there in the dead of winter sounded boring and bleak(阴冷的).
I wrinkled my nose in disgust and asked, “What will we do?”
“There’s tons of stuff to do,” Dad replied. “We can spend the week skiing, snowshoeing, ice skating, and sledding! We can play games, sleep in, and explore northern Michigan in a different season. We can build a giant bonfire down by the lake and have a barbecue, then come inside and drink hot cocoa.”
Okay, I was in. My brother, Dan, was also interested.
A few days after Christmas, Mom, Dad, Dan, and I piled into our car and hit the road. Five hours into our trip, my eyes fluttered shut. In my mind’s eye, I imagined the scene that would welcome us when we arrived at the cabin. The bare tree limbs would be covered in snow and ice crystals. I suspected the lake might look larger in the absence of docks and boats. The one thing that I hoped would be like summer was that the sky would be a bright blue.
Several hours later, just as the sun was setting, we turned onto the cabin’s gravel(碎石) lane and were greeted by the familiar sound of crackling rocks beneath the tires, though slightly softened from the snow on the ground. Before long, the cabin came into view, with long icicles(冰锥) hanging from its eaves(屋檐) and window frames. Anyway, it felt good to be grounded and at our happy place. As the car stopped, we all jumped out and ran to the cabin doorway.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Eagerly, Dad put the key in the cabin’s door lock, but it wouldn’t turn. He jiggled it a few times, frowning. “The lock must be frozen,” he muttered. Dan and I exchanged glances — this wasn’t the warm welcome we’d imagined. Mom suggested pouring warm water on the lock, but we had no thermos. Then Dad grinned. “Time for Plan B!” He grabbed a lighter from the car and carefully held the flame near the keyhole. After a minute, the metal warmed just enough for the key to turn with a satisfying click. We cheered as the door swung open, revealing the cozy interior, dusted with a layer of cold but promising warmth once we got the fireplace going.
Although our first day of winter vacation was more adventurous than expected, we made plenty of wonderful memories that week. We built snow forts by the lake, their walls glittering under the winter sun. At night, we gathered around the bonfire, roasting marshmallows while Dad told stories of his own childhood winters. On New Year’s Eve, we strapped on ice skates and glided under a sky streaked with stars, laughing when Dan tripped into a snowdrift. By the time we packed to leave, the cabin felt like a winter wonderland — not bleak at all, but alive with joy and the quiet magic of the season.

5. Peter was really excited about going to see the Golden Gate Bridge. He had always thought of a bridge that was golden, something that would be really impressive because of its famous name. But his dad just smiled as if he knew something Peter didn’t.
The next day was sunny and perfect for their trip. As they drove closer, the outline of the bridge appeared on the horizon. Peter’s excitement grew with every mile, his mind picturing the bridge in shades of gold.
However, as the bridge came into full view, Peter’s excitement was mixed with confusion. The big bridge across the water was bright red, a color that stood out a lot from the golden picture he had imagined. His confusion turned into a question directed at his father, “The bridge isn’t golden. Why then is it called the Golden Gate Bridge?” He thought the name should match the color of the bridge.
His father, with a mixed feeling of amusement and patience, explained the true meaning behind the name, “The name doesn’t mean the bridge is golden, Peter. It’s named after the Golden Gate, the natural entrance to the San Francisco Bay from the sea.”
Peter wanted to know more, “But why is that entrance called the Golden Gate?”
His father launched into the history behind the name, “A long time ago, many people were drawn to California by the promise of gold. They sailed into the bay through that entrance, seeing it as a gateway to wealth. That’s why they called it the Golden Gate.”
Peter listened attentively. The history was fascinating but didn’t satisfy his initial expectation. As they stood there, with the red bridge as a backdrop(背景), Peter couldn’t help but still think that the bridge should match the golden dream that had drawn so many to California, both in physical appearance and in spirit. When he got home, he sent a letter to a California newspaper.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
In the letter he explained his thoughts and suggestions about the color of the bridge. He wrote carefully, explaining how the Golden Gate Bridge with its current red color didn’t reflect the golden ambition it was meant to symbolize. He thought that for a special event, they could paint the bridge gold for a short time, so it would match its name. What’s more, Peter included his letter in an envelope with some money he saved, as a token of his commitment to the cause. He hoped his words would resonate with others.
After published, Peter’s letter sparked a heated debate in the community. Some agreed with him, arguing that the name “Golden Gate Bridge” should reflect its appearance, while others cherished the iconic red color, which had become a symbol of San Francisco. As the discussion grew, an artist made a big painting showing both the red bridge and a gold one. The painting quickly became a point of interest, drawing visitors and further fueling the conversation. Peter’s simple question aroused a wave of creative and passionate responses from the community, showing that the bridge’s color was more than just a matter of appearance — it was a matter of identity and heritage.

6. Kathy’s family vacation to the beach was usually the highlight of her summer. This year, however, her parents announced a new rule: no phones for the entire week.
“But my friends will be expecting updates about the trip,” Kathy complained. Kathy’s mom gave her a serious look. Unwillingly, Kathy handed her phone over and her mom locked it away in her room.
The drive to the beach house took most of the day. As they turned off the highway onto country back roads, the clouds darkened. Rain started to pour. “Even more beautiful in the rain,” her mother said. “What do you think, Kathy?” Kathy glared at her mom. “Beautiful,” she muttered.
That night after dinner, Kathy wandered into the kitchen, where her father was washing dishes. She gave her father a loving look and said in her sweetest voice, “Couldn’t I have my phone back, just for one second? Just so I can tell everyone what an amazing time I’m having?”
“Can’t,” he said. “It’s not here. Remember?” Kathy was very annoyed. Having nothing better to do, she examined the dusty bookcase in the living room. The books looked as dull as the weather. On the top shelf, however, she spotted a puzzle. She took it, emptied the pieces on the table, and began to sort them.
After what seemed like a few minutes, she looked up. It was past ten o’clock. She had been working for almost two hours! She yawned. The puzzle was less than half done, but she was exhausted. So, she went to bed.
When Kathy awoke the next morning, she jumped out of bed and threw open the curtains. A blazing sun was rising over the blue ocean. The sky was cloudless. The scene reminded Kathy of a photo that her friend Betty had recently sent her.
This view was even better. It would leave everyone speechless. Kathy dashed to her bedside table and reached for her phone. But there was nothing there. She sighed. Still, she wandered in front of the window, admiring the sunrise.
After a quick breakfast, Kathy headed to the beach. Under no circumstances had Kathy expected the scenery to be so spectacular! With the sea wind blowing against her face, Kathy totally lost herself in the stunning views.

She quickly put the remaining pieces into place. The puzzle was completed! Appreciating the finished puzzle, she realized she hadn’t thought of her cellphone for hours. Without the distractions from her cellphone, she found herself engaged in story sharing session with mom and daddy willingly.

读后续写
