(一)The Three Gorges Dam

The dam is about 2,309 metres long and 185 metres high, with a huge reservoir that can hold over 39 billion cubic metres of water.
It has brought many great benefits to China. First, it produces a large amount of clean electricity, which powers millions of homes and factories in central and eastern China. Second, it controls floods on the Yangtze River, protecting people living along the river from serious flood disasters. Besides, it improves the navigation of the Yangtze River, making it easier for large ships to sail from Shanghai to Chongqing. However, the construction also led to the relocation of more than 1.2 million local people and affected some local wildlife. The government has taken measures to protect the environment and help the relocated people build a new life.

At first, the road was used to transport tea from Yunnan and Sichuan to Tibet, and horses and Tibetan medicine were brought back in return. Later, it became a busy trade road for all kinds of goods. Besides trade, the Ancient Tea Horse Road was also a bridge for cultural exchange. Many ethnic groups along the road shared their customs, languages and art with each other. People come here to experience the ancient culture and enjoy the beautiful natural scenery. Some local people also make a living by providing homestay and travel services for visitors.

(一)The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge(桥)
The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB) is a cross-sea bridge and tunnel project connecting Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macao. It is the longest cross-sea bridge in the world, with a total length of 55 kilometres, including a 29.6-kilometre main bridge and a 6.7-kilometre undersea tunnel. The construction of the bridge started in 2009 and was completed in 2018. It took nearly 10 years and thousands of engineers and workers to build it.
The HZMB is a miracle of modern engineering. It has to stand against strong winds, big waves and earthquakes in the sea. To solve these problems, engineers used many new technologies and materials. For example, the undersea tunnel is made up of 33 huge steel tubes, each of which is 180 metres long and weighs about 80,000 tons. The bridge also has a smart traffic control system, which can manage the flow of cars and keep the bridge safe.
The HZMB has greatly changed the life of people in Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macao. Before the bridge was built, people had to take a ferry or drive a long way to travel between the three places, which usually took several hours. Now, the travel time is shortened to about 40 minutes by car. It also promotes the economic development of the Pearl River Delta, making it easier for people to do business and travel between the three places.
1. What does the HZMB connect?
2. How long is the total length of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge?
3. How many years did it take to build the HZMB?
4. What did engineers use to build the undersea tunnel of the HZMB?

(二)Chinese Paper Cutting
Chinese paper cutting is a traditional folk art with a history of more than 1,500 years. It is one of the most popular traditional arts in China and was listed as a World Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2009. Paper cutting is very simple in materials—only a piece of red paper and a pair of scissors or a knife are needed. But it is very difficult to make a beautiful paper cutting work, because it needs great skills and patience.
Paper cutting works are usually red, because red is a lucky colour in Chinese culture, symbolizing happiness, good luck and prosperity. The patterns of paper cutting are very rich, including animals, plants, flowers, birds, Chinese characters and traditional stories. For example, the pattern of a dragon and a phoenix symbolizes a happy marriage, and the pattern of a fish symbolizes surplus and good luck.
Paper cutting is popular all over China, and different areas have their own styles. For example, northern paper cutting is bold and lively, while southern paper cutting is delicate and beautiful. In the past, paper cutting was mostly made by women, who would paste the works on windows, doors and walls during festivals or important events such as weddings. Today, paper cutting is not only a traditional art, but also a new form of art. Many artists create modern paper cutting works, and some works are even exhibited in foreign countries. It has become a bridge for Chinese culture to go to the world.
6. When was Chinese paper cutting listed as a World Intangible Cultural Heritage?
7. What materials are needed to make Chinese paper cutting?
8. Why are paper cutting works usually red?
9. What do the dragon and phoenix paper cutting pattern symbolize?
