The studio of the Lyon-based artist known as Ememem received an urgent call from an architectural firm(公司) close to Place Sathonay last year. Someone was in the process of removing a mosaic (马赛克) he had fixed on the road in front of their offices. By the time he arrived, the man was gone.
Part of that artwork may have disappeared, but many of Ememem’s creations remain dotted (分散的) throughout the city streets...about 350 and counting.
Ememem calls himself “the road’s surgeon”. He has written that the works are “a memory notebook of the city”. His works have been drawing more and more attention. “He’s a star of local street art,” says Lisa Mambre, the mayor of Lyon. “His work is so noticeable. Everyone you ask seems to know about it.”
Yet while Ememem’s works may be visible, he prefers to remain unknown to the Public. He refuses to be photographed and doesn’t give either phone or face-to-face interviews. Ememem’s agent, Guillaume Abou, who has known him for 15 years, can offer some insight. “He’s someone with a great urge to give,” says Abou. “He’s quite laid-back.“
Whoever he is and whatever his growing popularity brings, one thing is for sure: Ememem will continue to go out at night to beautify Lyon’s damaged roads. He sees his interventions not only as a service to the community, but also as a means of bringing beauty to daily life. “The goal,” he writes, “is to spread a touch of poetry under our shoes, to generate a moment of amazement, a smile.”
24. What did Ememem do after he received the call?
A. He called the police immediately. B. He went to have a check himself.

A. To make his daily life colorful. B. To share his understanding of art.
C. To fill people with surprise and delight. D. To raise public awareness of community service.

We often find it hard to tear our eyes away from screens — an urge so intense (强烈的)that it messes with our focus and our cognitive (认知的) health, which is known as “brain rot”(脑退化). The Oxford Dictionary defines it as the degradation of mental state due to overconsumption of online content. It refers to the dull stuff on social media and its negative impact on brain health.
“There’s an arms race to develop digital content and platforms that can grab people’s attention and compete in a digital market,” says Adam Leventhal, a professor at the University of Southern California. “Digital content and platforms that win the arms race are increasingly addictive.” Dr. Leventhal adds, “They pull people into ‘digital addiction’ and expose consumers to unhealthy content.”
Though not an official diagnosis (诊断), “brain rot” can cause cognitive and emotional problems. “Too much screen time can negatively affect attention, concentration, learning, memory, emotional regulation, and social functioning,” Dr. Manwell says. “Brain rot” occurs as screen time replaces activities beneficial to the brain, such as exercise and socializing. Passive, rapid scrolling while multitasking or trying to work or study at the same time also contributes, resulting in divided and reduced attentional resources and leading to poorer learning and memory capabilities. Manwell says, “There are often also corresponding effects on the brain such as reduced gray matter and white matter, leading to damaged processing capacity and efficiency.”
To fight against “brain rot”, changes can be made. Manwell suggests altering digital media habits, like taking screen breaks and limiting certain apps. There are apps to track screen time and enforce digital detox. For long-term improvement, Manwell recommends replacing screen time with activities like meditation, exercise, and learning new skills. If screen use is work-related, find alternatives like printing materials or having in-person meetings. When on a screen, focus merely on the task to decline multitasking’s negative effects. Overall, being aware and making lifestyle adjustments can help prevent and reverse (逆转) the impact of “brain rot”.
28. According to the text, what do we know about “brain rot”?
A. A kind of serious disease officially diagnosed by doctors.
B. The loss of cognitive abilities caused by using digital platforms.
C. The negative impact of overusing digital devices on physical health.
D. The decline of mental well-being due to overconsuming online materials.
29. What can we infer from Adam Leventhal’s words?
A. The competition among digital contents and platforms is fierce.
B. Digital platforms are developed to help people improve their mental health.
C. The digital content that wins the attention competition is usually less addictive.
D. The development of digital content and platforms leads to some negative effects.
30. What does the underlined phrase “digital detox” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Using digital devices frequently. B. Taking a break from digital devices.
C. Giving up using digital technologies. D. Replacing with advanced digital products.
31. What is the main theme of the text?
A. The harms and solutions of “brain rot”. B. The effect of addictive digital platforms.
C. The importance of socializing in daily life. D. The impact of “brain rot” on digital device.

Are you a logical thinker, or would you say that you' re more free-spirited and artistic? If you' re the former, somebody's probably told you at some point that you' re a left-brained person, and if you' re the latter, right-brained. The idea that the right half of the brain is the creative half and the left half is the analytical (分析的) half and that our individual characteristics are determined by which half is dominant is widespread in popular psychology. However, this idea is a fiction.
Although we all obviously have different personalities and talents, there's no reason to believe these differences can be explained by the dominance of one half of the brain over the other half. Recent research using brain imaging technology hasn't found any evidence of hemispheric(脑半球的) dominance. Math, for example, requires logical thought and, thus, is generally said to be connected with the left brain. But mathematics involves a highly creative effort in addition to being a logical one. So would a gifted mathematician be a right-brained or a left-brained person?
If there's no evidence for the fiction of right-brained and left-brained people, why do so many people accept it? Perhaps it just makes intuitive (直觉的) sense that people's brains would be dominant on one side or the other just as their hands, feet, or eyes are. It may also have something to do with our seemingly unlimited appetite that allows us to sort ourselves(and our friends) into “types” based on our emotional and intellectual characteristics.
When people are offered general descriptive statements that are presented as individualized descriptions of their own personalities, they tend to accept them as meaningful and true, especially if the statements are positive. The “insights” they generate are both universal and congenial(一致的). After all, who would reject a description of themselves as “artistic and creative” or “reasonable and analytical”? The fiction is popular, in the end, because it gives us a “scientific” way to talk about our favorite subject—— ourselves.
32. Which is a common belief about people's individual characteristics?
A. A logical thinker is right-brained. B. Our right brain and left brain work the same.
C. The right half of the brain is the analytical half.
D. The dominant half of brain determines one's characteristics.
33. Why does the author mention mathematics in paragraph 2?
A. To show that math is a logical subject.
B. To argue that creativity is irrelevant in analytical thinking.
C. To prove that left-brained people are better at problem-solving.
D. To prove personality and talent differences aren't due to hemispheric dominance.
34. Why do many people believe in the left-brain/ right-brain theory?
A. This theory is widespread and popular.
B. Scientific studies have confirmed its accuracy.
C. It provides a way for them to sort personalities.
D. Brain imaging technology has shown clear hemispheric differences.
35. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. Why Left-Brained People Are Smarter?
B. The Science of Math: Left or Right Brain?
C. The Truth Behind Hemispheric Dominance
D. Ways to Develop Both Logical and Creative Thinking

Based on his own research at Washington University in St. Louis and other scientific studies, psychology lecturer Bono offers the following tips forgetting and staying happier in your life.
36 Looking forward to an enjoyable experience can make it all that much sweeter. Wait a couple of days before seeing a new movie that just came out, plan your big vacation for later in the summer, and try to take time to enjoy each bite of dessert. On the opposite, get negative tasks out of the way as quickly as possible — any delay will only make them seem worse.
People who focus more on process than outcome tend to remain motivated in the face of setbacks. They’re better at sticking with major challenges and prefer them over the easy route. 37 Because it celebrates rewards that come from the work itself. Focusing only on the outcome can lead to premature burnout if things don’t go well.
38 Find an activity that allows you to get together with friends on a regular, ongoing basis. A weekly happy hour, poker night, or TV show ensures consistency and motivation in your social interactions. People with high-quality relationships are not only happier, but also healthier. 39
The next time you are attracted to use your phone to look through social media, look through your list of contacts instead. 40 The happiness you get from a real connection with another person will be far greater than any comments or likes you get on social media.
A. Anticipation (期望)itself is pleasurable.
B. Decrease unnecessary socializing.
C. Find someone to call or FaceTime(面对面的时间).
D. This “growth mindset” helps people stay energized.
E. Facebookand Instagram often overstate how much better off others are.

Alice was absolutely crazy about dancing. As long as she was free at home, she would turn on the TV, and follow the dance tutorials step by step. Over time, she had learned a great deal from those TV programs, mastering various dance moves that made her look like a professional dancer.
When the school put up a notice announcing the upcoming New Year's Eve party, which included a dance performance section, a strong desire welled up in Alice's chest. She imagined herself dancing to her favorite music on the bright stage, and receiving cheers from the audience. But the beautiful vision quickly faded when she thought about her family. The image of her sick father lying in bed, and her mother working day and night to earn money to support the family popped into her mind. She was quite sure her family couldn't afford the expensive performing dress. With a heavy sigh, she made up her mind to give up the chance.
One afternoon, Alice found a quiet corner in the classroom to call her mom. She took out her old, worn-out phone, her fingers hovering over the dial button for a moment before pressing it. When her mom's voice came through the phone, Alice's eyes immediately became wet. “Mom, I... I won't join the dance show at the New Year's Eve party,” she said, trying her best to make her voice sound calm. “It's not necessary. The dress needed for the performance is too costly…” She bit her lower lip to hold back the tears, not wanting her mom to worry.
Little did Alice know that her best friends, Anna and Estelle, had walked past the classroom and heard her words. They stopped in their tracks, looking at each other with heavy hearts. Anna's eyes were filled with sympathy, and Estelle gently bit her lip, feeling sorry for Alice. They knew how much Alice loved dancing, and it pained them to hear her give up her dream like that.
