Moby-Dick was, for me, one of those books classified of “things you should have read a long time ago”. And as I am a mathematician, despite my interest in literature, my intellectual priorities did not include a 400-page novel about whales. That all changed one day when I overheard a mathematician friend mention that Moby-Dick contains a reference to cycloids.
Cycloids are among the most beautiful mathematical curves in existence — the French mathematician Blaise Pascal found them so distractingly fascinating that he claimed merely thinking about them could relieve the pain of a bad toothache — but applications to whaling are not usually listed on their resume.
Curious, I finally read Moby-Dick, and was delighted to find that it is full of mathematical metaphors. I realized further it’s not just Herman Melville; Leo Tolstoy writes about calculus (微积分), James Joyce about geometry.
Regretfully, the connections between mathematics and literature have not received the attention they deserve. In fact, they are often considered to be against each other. I recall that at the end of my very last English class at school, in 1991, the teacher gave me a lovely handwritten note with a long list of books she thought I might like, saying, “Sorry to lose you to the lab.”
The idea that one would have to choose between mathematics and literature is, I think, something of a tragedy — not only because the two fields are fundamentally linked, but also because understanding these links can enhance your enjoyment of both.
The perceived boundary between math and literature is actually a very recent idea. For most of recorded history, mathematics was part of every educated person’s cultural awareness.
The 11th-century Persian scholar Omar Khayyam, to whom the poetry collection known as the Rubaiyat is credited, was also a mathematician, and created beautiful geometric solutions to mathematical problems. In the 14th century, Chaucer wrote both The Canterbury Tales and a paper on the astrolabe (星盘,用于测量天体的距离). There are innumerable such examples, not least that of Lewis Carroll, who, of course, was a mathematician first and an author second.
There is a deeper reason we find mathematics at the heart of literature. The universe is full of underlying structure, pattern and regularity, and mathematics is the best tool we have for understanding it. That’s why mathematics is often called the language of the universe, and why it is so vital to science. Since we humans are part of the universe, it is only natural that our forms of creative expression, literature among them, will also reveal a tendency for pattern and structure.
4. What inspired the author to read Moby-Dick?
A. The topic of the book. B. His friend’s recommendation.
C. His long-time interest in literature. D. There being some maths in the book.
5. The author’s English teacher’s words are mentioned in paragraph 4 in order to ________.
A. form a sharp contrast with the attainment he later made
B. imply that mathematics and literature haven’t received proper attention
C. protest against the unfair treatment he once received while young
D. show that maths and literature are regarded as distinctive subjects
6. What do Omar Khayyam, Chaucer and Lewis Carroll have in common?
A. All of them were famous novelists.
B. All of them were in favour of reading widely.
C. All of them were masters in both maths and literature.
D. All of them were aware of the boundary between maths and literature.
7. Which of the following statements is the author most likely to agree with?
A. Taking on maths and giving up literature was not a wise choice for him.
B. Both maths and literature are part of the pursuit to understand the universe.
C. There is enough research on the connections between maths and literature.
D. Mathematicians may find it hard to understand ideas embedded in literature.
【答案】4. D 5. D 6. C 7. B
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇夹叙夹议文。作者结合自己阅读文学名著《白鲸》的经历,探讨了数学与文学之间的深层联系,强调它们在理解宇宙方面的共同作用,并指出历史上许多人物都是数学和文学的双重大师。
【4题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中“And as I am a mathematician, despite my interest in literature, my intellectual priorities did not include a 400-page novel about whales. That all changed one day when I overheard a mathematician friend mention that Moby-Dick contains a reference to cycloids. (由于我是一名数学家,尽管我对文学很感兴趣,但我的智力优先考虑的不是一本关于鲸鱼的400页的小说。有一天,我无意中听到一位数学家朋友提到《白鲸》中提到了旋轮线,这一切都改变了)”可知,因为《白鲸》提到了数学中的旋轮线,所以作者最终决定阅读这本书。故选D项。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“Regretfully, the connections between mathematics and literature have not received the attention they deserve. In fact, they are often considered to be against each other. I recall that at the end of my very last English class at school, in 1991, the teacher gave me a lovely handwritten note with a long list of books she thought I might like, saying, “Sorry to lose you to the lab.”
根据倒数第二段“The 11th-century Persian scholar Omar Khayyam, to whom the poetry collection known as the Rubaiyat is credited, was also a mathematician, and created beautiful geometric solutions to mathematical problems. In the 14th century, Chaucer wrote both The Canterbury Tales and a paper on the astrolabe (星盘,用于测量天体的距离). There are innumerable such examples, not least that of Lewis Carroll, who, of course, was a mathematician first and an author second. (11世纪的波斯学者奥马尔·海亚姆也是一位数学家,他为数学问题创造了美丽的几何解,诗集《鲁拜集》的作者就是他。在14世纪,乔叟写了《坎特伯雷故事集》和一篇关于星盘的论文。这样的例子数不胜数,尤其是刘易斯·卡罗尔,他首先是一位数学家,其次才是一位作家)”可知,这些人都是数学和文学的双重大师。故选C项。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“The universe is full of underlying structure, pattern and regularity, and mathematics is the best tool we have for understanding it. That’s why mathematics is often called the language of the universe, and why it is so vital to science. Since we humans are part of the universe, it is only natural that our forms of creative expression, literature among them, will also reveal a tendency for pattern and structure.
C
Understanding a simple-looking sentence such as “I read this article yesterday” actually requires some conceptual computation (“read”) on an object (“article”) at a specific time (“yesterday”). But the human brain routinely does this work nearly instantly based on the language’s grammatical rules, says linguist Andrea E. Martin of the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics in the Netherlands. And Martin’s team has now found that the human brain accommodates fundamental grammatical differences across languages by adjusting how it processes each sentence.
For a recent study in PLOS Biology, the researchers observed variations in Dutch-speaking (说荷兰语) participants’ brain waves while they listened to a Dutch-language audiobook. To visualize these changes, the scientists used a metric (度量标准) quantifying how many new “predictions” the brain makes of words that could come next in a sentence.
Previous English-based studies with a similar setup concluded in favor of a linguistic model where listeners “wait and see” how each phrase in a sentence will end before interpreting it. But the Dutch speakers in Martin’s study demonstrated an inclination for a highly predictive model; participants tended to finish each phrase in their head ahead of time before it was complete.
In Dutch language structure, verbs sometimes come near the end of a sentence rather than immediately after the subject like they do in English, explains study lead author Cas W. Coopmans, a postdoctoral researcher at New York University’s department of psychology. For instance, “‘because I ate a cookie with chocolate’ in English would be ‘because I a cookie with chocolate ate’ in Dutch. You would have to wait a very long time for the verb to come,” Coopmans says. “And that’s probably unrealistically late, you’re probably much more predictive in processing the sentence.”
The findings support the need for scientists to include more diversity when developing linguistic models, says Jixing Li, a linguist at City University of Hong Kong. If such studies are done only on English-speaking adults, she says, crucial differences in processing will be missed. Li argues that this limitation defeats the purpose of the models, which are meant to provide a realistic picture of human language-based thinking.
8. What did Martin’s team find out about the human brain?
A. It adapts quickly to grammatical rules.
B. It predicts upcoming words in most languages.
C. It processes sound better than visual information.
D. It internalizes grammatical structures automatically.
9. What do the underlined words “demonstrated an inclination for” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Simplified. B. Proposed. C. Questioned. D. Preferred.
10. What is Coopmans’ purpose in citing the example?
A. To illustrate the efficiency of Dutch communication.
B. To stress the difficulty of translating Dutch into English.
C. To explain why Dutch speakers have a predictive model.
D. To highlight similarities between Dutch and English grammar.
11. How does Li look at current studies on language processing?
A. They should cover wider age groups. B. They need more variety in participants.
C. They rely too heavily on laboratory settings. D. They contribute to analyzing human thinking.
【答案】8. A 9. D 10. C 11. B
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。研究发现,人脑会通过调整句子处理方式适应不同语言语法。荷兰语使用者因语言结构更倾向提前预测,专家认为语言研究应包含更多样参与者。
【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“And Martin’s team has now found that the human brain accommodates fundamental grammatical differences across languages by adjusting how it processes each sentence. (而马丁的团队现已发现,人类大脑能够通过调整对每句话的处理方式,来适应不同语言中的基本语法差异。)”可知,马丁的团队发现人类大脑能迅速适应语法规则。故选A。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词后文“participants tended to finish each phrase in their head ahead of time before it was complete. (参与者往往会提前在脑海中完成每个短语的表述,而这个短语还未完全结束。)”可知,说荷兰语的参与者更倾向、偏好提前预测句子,故划线词意思是“偏好”。故选D。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“In Dutch language structure, verbs sometimes come near the end of a sentence rather than immediately after the subject like they do in English, explains study lead author Cas W. “And that’s probably unrealisticly late, you’re probably much more predictive in processing the sentence.” (纽约大学心理学系博士后、该研究第一作者卡斯・W・库普曼斯解释说,在荷兰语结构中,动词有时出现在句末,而不像英语那样紧跟在主语之后。例如,英语 “because I ate a cookie with chocolate”(因为我吃了一块巧克力饼干),在荷兰语中会说成 “because I a cookie with chocolate ate”。库普曼斯说:“你得等很久才能等到动词出现,这实在太晚了,因此你在处理句子时很可能会更多地进行预测。”)”可知,库普曼斯引用这个例子是为了解释为什么荷兰语使用者会拥有这种预测模型。故选C。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“The findings support the need for scientists to include more diversity when developing linguistic models, says Jixing Li, a linguist at City University of Hong Kong. (香港城市大学的语言学家李基兴表示,这些研究结果表明,科学家在开发语言模型时需要考虑更多的多样性因素。)”可知,李认为当前有关语言处理的研究需要在参与者方面有更多的多样性。故选B。
D
Scoring systems have become a defining feature of modern life. We rank wines, track daily steps, count online likes, and judge academic performance through numbers. In The Score, philosopher C. Thi Nguyen offers a careful examination of how such systems shape not only our decisions, but also our values.
Nguyen begins with the world of professional wine tasting. Critics often rely on numerical scales to judge wines under strictly controlled conditions, usually tasting without food to reduce variation. While this practice is understandable, Nguyen asks, “How could you score a ‘best’ wine if one is incredibly good with tomato sauces but kind of listless with anything else, and then rank it against a wine that is moderately good with every food?” To make scoring possible, variability is removed, but so is much of what gives wine its richness and pleasure.
More seriously, Nguyen argues that scoring systems do not simply describe reality; they reshape it. Because high scores increase sales, winemakers are encouraged to design wines that perform well within scoring frameworks. Over time, this leads to what Nguyen calls “fruit bombs” — wines that are bold and immediately impressive, but lack depth when paired with food. In this way, the scoring system gradually transforms the industry itself, favoring what is easily measurable over what is genuinely meaningful.
Nguyen uses this example to introduce a broader concept he calls “value capture.” This occurs when simplified metrics (衡量指标) fail to reflect what we originally cared about, yet slowly replace those values. Similar patterns appear across modern society. Fitness trackers promote fixed step counts regardless of individual health needs; Social media; Nguyen suggests, offers a particularly clear case. Platforms record likes, shares; and followers, but ignore qualities such as empathy or intellectual growth. He describes this mismatch as “the Gap”, referring to the distance between what is measured and what truly matters.
Such tensions are not limited to digital spaces. Drawn to philosophy by deep inquiry, he later found himself pushed toward narrowly defined outputs. The pressure to perform well on measurable indicators can quietly reshape priorities.
Despite his critique, Nguyen does not reject scoring systems entirely. As a passionate board and video gamer, he acknowledges that following external rules can be enjoyable. The danger arises when people mistake metrics for value itself. Scores should serve human purposes; not replace them. Ultimately, The Score calls for a more reflective attitude toward numbers. By remembering why we measure in the first place, Nguyen argues, we can resist allowing scores to decide what deserves attention, effort, and care.
12. Why does Nguyen introduce the example of wine tasting at the beginning of the passage?
A. To show that numerical evaluation can impact consumer decision-making.
B. To argue that professional critics misunderstand public preferences.
C. To demonstrate how scoring systems remove meaningful complexity.
D. To compare different cultural attitudes toward wine appreciation.
13. What does the underlined word “bold” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. strong B. daring C. rich D. plain
14. Which of the following best illustrates “the Gap” mentioned in the passage?
A. Student focusing on test scores rather than learning itself.
B. A critic adjusting ratings to reflect personal taste.
C. A company refusing to use data in decision-making.
D. A gamer ignoring rules to increase enjoyment.
15. What is Nguyen’s overall attitude toward scoring systems?
A. Dismissive. B. Cautious. C. Neutral. D. Hostile.
【答案】12. C 13. C 14. A 15. B
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。主要说明了评分系统是现代生活特征,它虽方便却会抹去事物的丰富意义,用简单指标替代真正价值。Nguyen批判其弊端,但不彻底否定,呼吁人们理性看待分数。
【12题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“To make scoring possible, variability is removed, but so is much of what gives wine its richness and pleasure.(为了实现评分的目的,多样性被消除了,但随之消失的还有赋予葡萄酒丰富口感和愉悦体验的诸多元素)”可知,Nguyen在文章开头引入了品酒的例子是为了说明评分系统是如何消除有意义的复杂性的。故选C。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词后文“immediately impressive (立即给人留下深刻印象)”可知,这些葡萄酒立即给人留下深刻印象,说明口感浓烈、强烈。故划线词意思是“浓烈、强烈”。故选C。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“He describes this mismatch as “the Gap”, referring to the distance between what is measured and what truly matters.(他将这种不匹配现象称为“差距”,指的是所测量的内容与真正重要之事之间的差距)”可知,学生只关注考试成绩而忽视了学习本身最能体现文中所提到的“差距”。故选A。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Despite his critique, Nguyen does not reject scoring systems entirely. As a passionate board and video gamer, he acknowledges that following external rules can be enjoyable. The danger arises when people mistake metrics for value itself.(尽管有上述批评,Nguyen并未完全否定评分系统。作为一位热衷于电子游戏和桌游的玩家,他承认遵循外部规则本身是令人愉悦的。但问题在于,人们往往会将衡量标准误认为是价值本身)”可知,Nguyen对于评分体系的总体态度是谨慎的。故选B。

You might be leaving some happiness on the table by doing your everyday activities all by yourself. A new study has found that almost any activity becomes more ____21____ when done with others. The ____22____ of another person makes life’s routines a little brighter.
Drawing on data from over 40,000 Americans, the study showed that participants consistently viewed experiences ____23____ social activities as more pleasant. Unsurprisingly, in this respect, the biggest boosts were linked to activities ____26____ by nature. Yet even individual hobbies such as reading saw an increase in happiness when ____27____. The lesson, researchers suggest, is to be ____29____. Schedule time with others. Even daily routines can become ____30____. Catch up with a friend on the phone — social contact doesn’t always need to be face-to-face; phone calls also ____31____. Or share a ride home. As Epley puts it: “Having a good life is about ____32____ positive experiences together until it becomes a habit.”
In short, happiness may not ____33____ what we do, but who we do it with — a ____34____ that our instinct (本能) for connection remains our most reliable source of ____35____.

According to Yue, ____39____ associate professor of translation at the University of Hong Kong, translating Chinese food names into English is “an impossible task.”
____40____ (answer) why translating the names of these foods is so tricky, one needs to look at China’s long culinary history. Fuchsia Dunlop, a British food writer who ____41____ (specialize) in Chinese cuisine for over two decades, says the problem stems from the fact ____42____ certain words don’t even exist in English. “China has an ____43____ (extraordinary) complex culinary culture with a highly specific vocabulary, and in many cases, we do not have equivalents (对等物) in English,” she says.
____44____ recent years have seen improvements in online translation tools, Dunlop still encounters amusing mistranslations in her travels around China.
Among her favorite examples is stir-fried cabbage, which she saw _____45_____ (translate) as “handbag food”. This is because the word for Chinese cabbage, baocai, is made up of two Chinese characters. Bao means “bag,” and cai mean “food/vegetables”. Smiling, Dunlop suggests clearing up some popular misunderstandings before visiting China.

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章探讨了中餐名翻译成英语的困难,指出由于中国饮食文化的独特性和词汇的复杂性,加上英语中缺乏对应表达,导致菜单常出现滑稽的误译,即使现代翻译工具也难以完全解决这一问题。
【36题详解】
考查介词。句意:随着国际旅行者因中国更友好的签证政策增多,外国人在品尝各种美味时,难免会遇到一些滑稽的菜单翻译。固定短语thanks to表示“由于,因为”。故填to。
故填are。
【39题详解】
考查冠词。句意:香港大学翻译学副教授Yue指出,中餐名英译是“不可能的任务”。空处表示泛指,意为“一名副教授”,应用不定冠词,且associate的发音以元音音素开头,应用an。故填an。
【40题详解】
考查非谓语动词。句意:为了解答这些食物名称的翻译难题,需回溯中国悠久的饮食史。空处句子已有谓语,空处是非谓语,作目的状语,表示“为了……”,应用answer“回答,解答”的不定式形式,句首单词的首字母需大写。故填To answer。
【41题详解】
考查动词时态和主谓一致。句意:专研中餐二十余年的英国作家Fuchsia Dunlop表示,问题根源在于英语中缺乏对应词汇。空处作who引导的定语从句的谓语,先行词writer在从句中作主语,结合“for over two decades”可知,时态应用现在完成时,表示过去的动作持续到现在,且主语是单数,助动词应用has。故填has specialized。
【42题详解】
考查同位语从句。句意:专研中餐二十余年的英国作家Fuchsia Dunlop表示,问题根源在于英语中缺乏对应词汇。空处引导名词性从句作fact的同位语,同位语从句的成分和语义均完整,应用连接词that作引导词。故填that。
故填While/Though/Although。
【45题详解】
考查非谓语动词。句意:她最爱的例子是炒包菜被译作“手提包食物”,因“包菜”由“包”(包,袋)和“菜”(食物/蔬菜)组成。空处作which引导的定语从句的宾语补足语,先行词stir-fried cabbage在从句中作宾语,translate“翻译”和stir-fried cabbage逻辑上是被动关系,因此用translate的过去分词形式。故填translated。

Nine-year-old Jaxx Robertson found the world outside his window both fascinating and intimidating(令人生畏的). Diagnosed with autism(自闭症), he often felt most comfortable in the quiet predictability of his own routines. Every Wednesday, however, a special event broke the stillness—— the arrival of the big green bin lorry(垃圾车) on his Greenock street.
From behind the safety of the glass, Jaxx would watch, utterly attracted. He knew the two binmen, Brian and David, by the sound of their laughter and the rhythm of their work. A secret wish grew in his heart— to walk up close to the big green lorry one day, and perhaps even climb aboard like a real binman and take a turn at the wheel. Yet for now, he would simply press his palm against the cool window as they passed, a silent observer of their world.
His mother noticed his quiet fascination. One particularly wet Wednesday, seeing the men working in the rain, she had an idea. “What if we made something warm for them, Jaxx?” she suggested gently. “Something to thank them for working in the rain for us.”
The idea sparked a light in Jaxx’s eyes. As the next Wednesday approached, a new routine was born. In the warmth of their kitchen, Jaxx and his mother prepared simple treats — hot rolls and packets of biscuits. The carefully wrapped little gifts were waiting on the kitchen table when the bin lorry’s familiar noise sounded in the street.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
With his mom’s encouragement, Jaxx walked outside. Clutching the wrapped treats tightly, he took small, tentative steps toward the green lorry. Brian and David paused their work, smiling warmly when they saw him. “These are for you,” Jaxx mumbled softly, handing over the gifts. The binmen’s eyes lit up—they thanked him repeatedly, patting his shoulder gently. When Jaxx shyly mentioned his wish to see the lorry up close, David opened the door and helped him climb aboard. Sitting in the driver’s seat, Jaxx’s face broke into a bright grin as he touched the steering wheel, his hands trembling slightly with joy.
Hearing their story, the local depot (环卫站) manager invited Jaxx for a visit. On the appointed day, Jaxx arrived with his mom, eyes wide with excitement. The manager showed him around: he got to operate the lorry’s lifting mechanism, wear a real binman’s uniform, and even meet the whole team. Everyone greeted him warmly, and Brian and David gave him a small model lorry as a gift. Jaxx, once a quiet observer behind the window, laughed and chatted with the workers, his shyness fading away. This special visit not only fulfilled his dream but also let him feel the warmth of friendship, making the world outside his window a little less intimidating.

A. Dismissive. B. Cautious. C. Neutral. D. Hostile.

But those who attempt to come up with English names for these dishes aren’t to blame for the often unusual and occasionally alarming results. Nor ____38____ (be) the translation apps.
