A
In today’s global trade, product safety is extremely important. Therefore, labels on products help consumers make informed choices.
The primary function of these marks is to ensure the safety of users and property. For instance, electrical equipment sold in the European Union must carry the “CE” mark. This sign proves that the product meets all relevant EU standards. Unlike an official approval, it is based on the company’s own evaluation. In contrast, the Chinese “CCC” mark requires testing by an official organization, and a certificate must be obtained. Products without the “CCC” mark cannot be sold in China.
Other marks are also important. The French “FR” sign instructs consumers to separate packaging for recycling. The “RoHS” mark shows a product limits harmful materials under EU rules, but as it is merely one part of the CE standard, it does not ensure full compliance (遵守). Codes like “SKC/SKU” are simply used by companies to manage their product storage. Most importantly, products must have clear safety warnings on their labels, or they will be banned from the market.
Below is a product label:
▲WARNING To avoid danger of choke, keep this plastic bag away from babies and children.
Do not use it in beds, carriages or playpens.
▲WARNING This product contains a button cell or coin battery.
A swallowed button cell or coin battery can cause Internal Chemical Burns.
Battery liquid is poisonous and can cause dizziness and other serious symptoms.
21. Which mark is required for a camera to be sold in Europe?
A. FR. B. SKC. C. RoHS. D. CE.
22. Which risk is least likely to occur for this product?
A. Burns. B. Poisoning. C. Cuts. D. Choking.
23. What can be learned about this product according to the label?
A. It restricts certain harmful substances. B. It can be opened by children alone.
C. Its packaging cannot be recycled. D. It is allowed to be sold in China.

The incident took place, believe it or not, on the playground. I was something of a football player, but I had never been a good player, far less a great one. I played for the mere physical joy that I got out of the game, but I played with a will, and put my whole heart into the game. The result was that, though I had plenty of energy and enthusiasm, I was never picked for my college team.
Let me confess frankly that this was only because there was another player in the same position who happened to be much better than me. I considered myself the better sportsman, but he was certainly the greater player. So I never grumbled or complained. I was content to wait and bide my time.
And at last my patience was rewarded. It was for me a very special day. Our team had shot up into the final and was meeting its rival Our star-player sent word at the last moment that he was ill and he could not take the field. Imagine the astonishment in the college camp! The thought was that the game was as good as lost, and so also, I confess, did I for this player was our trump card (王牌): That is what everybody always said. However, something had to be done, and that something had to be myself! The captain called me up almost apologetically for having failed to recognize my greatness before, and — there I was, on the playground, greeted by the cheers of my friends, and a few jeers from those who had little faith in my prowess.
I can tell you that I played like a demon I was here, there and everywhere — now leading the attack, now falling back to help the defense. It was indeed a thrilling moment in my life. For a time, I was the center of all attention, the object of universal applause, and “the observed of all observers”. And, believe it or not, it was I who put in the winning goal. It marked the top of a glorious day. Even now I look back on the episode with unmixed pleasure and satisfaction.

A. He received the captain’s sincere apology. B. He helped his school team to enter the final.
C. He was finally considered as the trump card. D. He became a replacement for the sick player.
26. Why did the author say it was a thrilling moment in his life?
A. He showed off his patience to the fullest. B. The audience applauded his performance.
C. The audience observed players attacking. D. He played attentively in the final match.
27. What can we learn from the author’s experience?
A. Patience is the best medicine. B. Care and diligence bring luck.

C
“Men are from Mars, women from Venus” has become a convenient shorthand for every household debate, from map-reading to loading the dishwasher. Yet beneath the jokes lies a serious question: are the two sexes born with fundamentally different wiring, or have we simply repeated the story until it feels true?
A high-profile set of scans appears to offer hard proof of a difference. British psychologist Stuart Ritchie reported in 2012 that male brains are, on average, roughly one-tenth heavier than female brains and contain more white-matter.
Lise Eliot, a neuroscientist at Chicago Medical School, believes such headlines are too dramatic. After re-analyzing thousands of images collected across six countries, she calls the brain “a unisex (不分性别的) organ”. The gap between group averages, she insists, is no wider than the difference between male and female kidneys, and the figures fail to predict how the organ actually processes algebra, empathy or parking instructions. Put simply, size decides nothing.
If body structure is not the real boss, what is? Social experience. A 1970 survey’ showed boys beating girls thirteen-to-one on the mathematics SAT, a figure once highlighted by former Harvard president Lawrence Summers as proof of natural male scientific talent. However, when later student groups offered girls equal laboratory hours, encouraged female teachers and rewrote textbooks to include more real-world problems, the ratio fell to three-to-one, suggesting that opportunity, not body part, writes most of the scoreboard.
Margaret McCarthy, a neuropharmacologist at the University of Maryland, applauds Eliot for “forcing the debate forward”. She also notes that wiping out every sex difference would sound an extreme note. Equal, she reminds us, is not identical; biology may still whisper where society shouts.
28. Why does the author present Ritchie’s finding?
A. To correct statistical errors in psychology. B. To stress the risk of repeating the same story.
C. To explain boys’ bad habits in reading maps. D. To present scan evidence of sex differences.
29. What is implied by Eliot’s re-analysis of brain volume?
A. Kidneys may decide brain sizes. B. Males do well in tackling complex tasks.
C. It can’t tell how a person thinks or acts. D. Brain size might influence sex rules.
30. What can we infer from the narrowed math score gap after 1970?
A. Equal chances play a big role. B. Boys are losing interest in STEM.
C. Standardized tests can’t be trusted. D. Biology favors girls in math.
31. What might be McCarthy’s attitude to erasing sex differences?
A. Favorable. B. Disapproving. C. Unclear. D. Indifferent.
D
Quick: what’s your best friend’s phone number? Don’t feel bad if you couldn’t answer off the top of your head. You have no reason to commit phone numbers to memory: it’s just there in your phone. Or perhaps you once had a phone book to store them. In either case, an object does the remembering for you.
“Prosthetic memory” (人工记忆) is nothing new. Writing itself has been a means of storing information. Yet the information revolution has generated more data than ever before. We are flooded with information. We’re creating more of it, and keeping more of it. The storage capacity of the human brain has since been eclipsed. No wonder, then, that we’re increasingly dependent on memory prostheses, from libraries to smartphones.
Not everyone thinks this trend in external memory is good. Historically, memory prostheses were expensive. As technologies such as printing and photography become more affordable, sharing experiences with others is easier than ever. So every breakfast, every sunset, every encounter with a cat finds its way on to social media. And here comes the worry. When we devote ourselves to capturing and sharing the world in this way, something immensely valuable is lost; when recording so much of our lives, we’re forgetting to actually live them, and so disconnect ourselves from experience.
But is our social media-driven transformation wholly bad? If we’re still creating and sharing memories like this, perhaps this is because we’ve not had sufficient time to learn how to do these things without thinking about what we’re doing. It is easy to ignore that the mass social media era is less than a decade old. That’s just a short blink (眨眼) in human history, yet it has totally changed how we live. I suspect we’re not far off from being directly faced with experience yet with the ability to share experience in ways less bounded by geography and time. After all, technology can protect all the moments of a life that would otherwise be lost.
32. What can be inferred from paragraph 1?
A. Technology weakens our brains. B. We are burdened with phone numbers.
C. We rely more on tools to memorize. D. Technology distances us from our friends.
33. What does the underlined word “eclipsed” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Improved. B. Undervalued. C. Restricted. D. Outperformed.
34. What negative effect does online sharing bring about?
A. An overflow of posts. B. High cost of digital devices.
C. Addiction to the virtual world. D. Disregard for authentic experience.
35. What does the author advise us to do in the last paragraph?
A. Have faith in human brains. B. Take time to adapt to digital age.
C. Quicken the pace of development. D. Make efforts to enhance memory.

The Oxford English Dictionary defines viral marketing as a method of marketing where consumers are encouraged to share information about a company’s goods or services via the Internet. 36 . For example, someone buys your product — if they like it, they tell their friends how good it is. Then the friends go and buy the same product and like it and tell their friends until you have reached a huge market without spending anything on advertising.
Viral marketing provides enormous potential for companies to promote their products with minimal spending. An excellent example of how successful viral marketing can be is the case of Hotmail.
Hotmail was originally launched in 1996 and it grew faster than any other company in the history of the world. Within the first 18 months of its launch it had already signed up over 12 million subscribers. 37 : How do they do it? Well, according to Dr Ralph Wilson there are a number of elements that contribute towards a successful campaign.
● 38 . This may not seem like sound business practice as there is no immediate profit from the action, but viral marketing campaigns rely on patience. Once you have your potential customers using your free product you have the opportunity to sell them other desirable things, not to mention the possibilities you have for generating revenue through advertising.
●You must scale your supply. You are able to scale the campaign from small to large very rapidly. If your campaign is to be successful you must ensure that you can meet rapidly growing demand for your product or service. 39 , instead of increasing your business, your viral campaigns will start to kill it.
●You identify and exploit common motivations and behaviours. Most people are driven by a desire to be loved or popular or even financially better off. 40 .
A. If demand exceeds your ability to supply them
B. You give away some form of free product or service
C. Basically, this isn’t much different from word of mouth
D. If it cannot put links on other people’s websites or supply content to others
E. Internet is a reliable source of your product
F. Many companies have since successfully used the power of the Internet to advertise
G. These desires are part of what generates the huge amount of Internet communication each day

On a cold winter day, Li Ming found an injured puppy on his way home from school. The puppy was curled (蜷缩) up beside a snow pile, shaking, with its hind leg seemingly hurt and its tiny body shaking from the cold. Li Ming bent down and gently touched the puppy’s head, noticing the fear and helplessness in its eyes. He felt a burst of sadness and knew he couldn’t leave the little creature there. Immediately, he took off his scarf (围巾), carefully covered the puppy, and held it in his arms.
“Don’t be afraid, I’ll help you,” Li Ming said softly, trying to comfort the shaking puppy. He decided to take the puppy home, even though he knew his parents might not agree to keep a pet. As he walked, he thought about how to convince his parents. “Maybe if I show them how much I care, they’ll understand,” he said to himself.
When he arrived home, Li Ming quietly carried the puppy to his room. He dried its body with a towel (毛巾), making sure to be extra gentle around the injured leg. Then, he found some old clothes and made a plain bed for the puppy in the corner of his room. The puppy seemed to relax a little, its shaking dying. Li Ming also gave it some water and a small piece of bread, which the puppy ate eagerly, wagging its tail (摇尾巴) weakly.
That night, Li Ming lay in bed, staring at the ceiling (天花板), filled with worry. He didn’t know how serious the puppy’s injury was or how his parents would react. He imagined different situations — some where his parents criticized him, others where they allowed him to keep the puppy. But no matter what, he knew he couldn’t give up this poor little life. As he dropped off to sleep, he dreamed of the puppy running happily in a sunny field, its tail wagging joyfully.

A
In today’s global trade, product safety is extremely important.
The “RoHS” mark shows a product limits harmful materials under EU rules, but as it is merely one part of the CE standard, it does not ensure full compliance (遵守) .
D 22. C 23. A
根据第二段“For instance, electrical equipment sold in the European Union must carry the “CE” mark. (例如,在欧盟销售的电气设备必须带有CE标识)”可知,相机作为电气设备,在欧洲销售必须带有CE标识。故选D。
22. 细节理解题。根据WARNING部分“To avoid danger of choke, keep this plastic bag away from babies and children. (为避免窒息风险,请将此塑料袋远离婴幼儿)”及“This product contains a button cell or coin battery. A swallowed button cell or coin battery can cause Internal Chemical Burns. Battery liquid is poisonous and can cause dizziness and other serious symptoms. (本产品含有纽扣电池。吞下纽扣电池可能导致体内化学灼伤。电池液有毒,可能引发头晕及其他严重症状)”可知,提到了窒息风险(Choking)、化学灼伤(Burns)和中毒(Poisoning),但没有提到割伤(Cuts)相关的风险。故选C。
23. 细节理解题。根据第三段“The “RoHS” mark shows a product limits harmful materials under EU rules (RoHS标识表明该产品按照欧盟法规限制了有害物质的使用)”及标签上的RoHS标识可知,该产品限制了某些有害物质的使用。故选A。
B
24. What can you learn about the author from the first two paragraphs?
A. He was chosen into the college team. B. He intended to be a professional player.
C. He performed better than any other player. D. He showed great interest in playing football.
25. What was the author’s patience rewarded?
C. Great hopes make a great man. D. Opportunity is for the prepared.
D 25. D 26. B 27. D
根据第一段中“I played for the mere physical joy that I got out of the game, but I played with a will, and put my whole heart into the game. The result was that, though I had plenty of energy and enthusiasm, I was never picked for my college team.(我踢球只是为了从比赛中获得身体上的快乐,但我踢球是有意志的,我把全部的心都投入到比赛中。结果是,尽管我精力充沛,充满热情,但我从来没有入选过大学队)”以及第二段中“I considered myself the better sportsman, but he was certainly the greater player. So I never grumbled or complained. I was content to wait and bide my time.(我认为自己是更好的运动员,但他肯定是更伟大的运动员。所以我从不抱怨。我满足于等待时机)”可知,从文章的前两段可以了解到作者对踢足球表现出极大的兴趣。故选D。
25. 细节理解题。根据第三段中“Our star-player sent word at the last moment that he was ill and he could not take the field.(我们的明星选手在最后一刻捎话说他病了,不能上场了)”和“The captain called me up almost apologetically for having failed to recognize my greatness before, and — there I was, on the playground, greeted by the cheers of my friends, and a few jeers from those who had little faith in my prowess.(队长打电话给我,几乎是在道歉,因为我之前没有意识到我的伟大,然后我就出现在操场上,我的朋友们欢呼着迎接我,而那些对我的能力不太有信心的人则嘲笑我)”可知,作者的耐心得到的回报是成为生病的球员的替补。故选D。
根据最后一段中“It was indeed a thrilling moment in my life. For a time, I was the center of all attention, the object of universal applause, and ‘the observed of all observers’. And, believe it or not, it was I who put in the winning goal.(那确实是我一生中激动人心的时刻。有一段时间,我是所有人关注的中心,是全世界掌声的对象,是‘所有观察者的观察对象’。不管你信不信,是我打进了制胜一球)”可知,作者说这是他一生中激动人心的时刻,是因为观众为他的表现鼓掌。故选B。
27. 推理判断题。根据文章大意以及第二段中“So I never grumbled or complained. I was content to wait and bide my time.(所以我从不抱怨。我满足于等待时机)”以及最后一段中“And, believe it or not, it was I who put in the winning goal. It marked the top of a glorious day. Even now I look back on the episode with unmixed pleasure and satisfaction.(信不信由你,是我打进了制胜球。这标志着辉煌的一天的开始。即使现在回想起这段经历,我仍感到无比的愉悦和满足)”可推知,从作者的经历中,我们明白了机会是留给有准备的人的这个道理。故选D。
D 29. C 30. A 31. B
根据第二段中的“A high-profile set of scans appears to offer hard proof of a difference. British psychologist Stuart Ritchie reported in 2012 that male brains are, on average, roughly one-tenth heavier than female brains and contain more white-matter.(一组备受关注的扫描似乎为这种差异提供了确凿的证据。英国心理学家斯图尔特·里奇2012年报告称,男性大脑平均比女性大脑重约十分之一,且含有更多的白质)”可知,作者呈现里奇的研究发现,是为了展示关于两性差异的扫描证据。故选D项。
29. 推理判断题。根据第三段中的“The gap between group averages, she insists, is no wider than the difference between male and female kidneys, and the figures fail to predict how the organ actually processes algebra, empathy or parking instructions. Put simply, size decides nothing.(她坚持认为,群体平均值之间的差距并不比男性和女性肾脏之间的差异更大,而且这些数据无法预测该器官(大脑)实际上是如何处理代数、同理心或停车指令的。简单来说,尺寸决定不了任何事情)”可推断,艾略特对大脑体积的重新分析表明,大脑体积无法说明一个人如何思考或行动。故选C项。
30. 推理判断题。根据第四段中的“However, when later student groups offered girls equal laboratory hours, encouraged female teachers and rewrote textbooks to include more real-world problems, the ratio fell to three-to-one, suggesting that opportunity, not body part, writes most of the scoreboard.(然而,当后来的学生群体为女孩提供平等的实验室时间、鼓励女教师任教并改写教科书以纳入更多现实世界的问题时,这一比例降至3:1,这表明,在成绩的构成中,机会而非身体部位(生理因素)占据了主导地位)”可推断,1970年后数学成绩差距缩小,说明平等的机会发挥了重要作用。故选A项。
根据最后一段中的“She also notes that wiping out every sex difference would sound an extreme note. Equal, she reminds us, is not identical; biology may still whisper where society shouts.(她还指出,消除所有性别差异听起来会是一种极端的说法。她提醒我们,平等并不等同于完全相同;在社会大声强调平等的地方,生理因素可能仍在悄悄发挥作用)”可推断,麦卡锡对消除性别差异的态度是不赞成的。故选B项。
C 33. D 34. D 35. B
根据第一段中“You have no reason to commit phone numbers to memory: it’s just there in your phone. Or perhaps you once had a phone book to store them. In either case, an object does the remembering for you. (你没有理由把电话号码记在记忆里:它就在你的手机里。或者你曾经有一个电话簿来存储它们。在任何一种情况下,一个物体为你做记忆。)”推知,我们更多地依赖工具进行记忆。故选C。
33. 词句猜测题。根据第二段中“The storage capacity of the human brain has since been eclipsed. No wonder, then, that we’re increasingly dependent on memory prostheses, from libraries to smartphones.(人类大脑的存储能力从此eclipsed。因此,从图书馆到智能手机,我们越来越依赖人工记忆也就不足为奇了。)”可知,我们越来越依靠人工记忆,其原因是我们大脑的储存能力已经被超越,人工记忆可以记得更多。由此猜测,划线词eclipsed意为“超越”的意思,与outperformed同义。故选D。
34. 细节理解题。根据第三段中“When we devote ourselves to capturing and sharing the world in this way, something immensely valuable is lost; when recording so much of our lives, we’re forgetting to actually live them, and so disconnect ourselves from experience.(当我们执着于以这种方式捕捉并分享世界时,某种极具价值的东西便会悄然流失;我们记录了生活中太多片段,却忘了真正去体验生活,也因此与当下的感受渐行渐远。)”
根据最后一段中“But is our social media-driven transformation wholly bad? If we’re still creating and sharing memories like this, perhaps this is because we’ve not had sufficient time to learn how to do these things without thinking about what we’re doing. It is easy to ignore that the mass social media era is less than a decade old.
G. These desires are part of what generates the huge amount of Internet communication each day
C 37. F 38. B 39. A 40. G
36. 根据上文“The Oxford English Dictionary defines viral marketing as a method of marketing where consumers are encouraged to share information about a company’s goods or services via the Internet.(《牛津英语词典》将病毒式营销定义为一种鼓励消费者通过互联网分享公司商品或服务信息的营销方法)”以及下文“For example, someone buys your product — if they like it, they tell their friends how good it is. Then the friends go and buy the same product and like it and tell their friends until you have reached a huge market without spending anything on advertising.(例如,有人买了你的产品——如果他们喜欢,就会告诉朋友产品有多好。然后朋友们去买同样的产品,喜欢上之后再告诉他们的朋友,直到你不用花任何广告费就拥有了一个巨大的市场)”可知,此处应衔接病毒式营销的定义与下文的例子,说明其本质与口碑传播相似,C选项“Basically, this isn’t much different from word of mouth(基本上,这与口碑传播没有太大区别)”中的this指代上文的病毒式营销,word of mouth与下文“告诉朋友”的例子相呼应,符合语境。故选C项。
37. 根据上文“Hotmail was originally launched in 1996 and it grew faster than any other company in the history of the world. Within the first 18 months of its launch it had already signed up over 12 million subscribers.(Hotmail最初于1996年推出,其发展速度比世界历史上任何其他公司都快。在推出后的前18个月内,它就已经拥有了超过1200万用户)”以及下文“How do they do it? Well, according to Dr Ralph Wilson there are a number of elements that contribute towards a successful campaign.(他们是怎么做到的?根据拉尔夫·威尔逊博士的说法,有许多因素有助于一场成功的营销活动)”可知,此处应体现其他公司也借鉴了这种互联网营销方式,F选项“Many companies have since successfully used the power of the Internet to advertise(从那以后,许多公司都成功地利用了互联网的力量进行广告宣传)”承接上文Hotmail的成功案例,引出下文对成功要素的探讨,符合语境。故选F项。
38. 根据下文“This may not seem like sound business practice as there is no immediate profit from the action, but viral marketing campaigns rely on patience. Once you have your potential customers using your free product you have the opportunity to sell them other desirable things, not to mention the possibilities you have for generating revenue through advertising.(这似乎不是明智的商业做法,因为这一行为没有即时利润,但病毒式营销活动依赖耐心。一旦你的潜在客户使用了你的免费产品,你就有机会向他们出售其他受欢迎的东西,更不用说通过广告产生收入的可能性了)”可知,此处应总述病毒式营销的一个要素——提供免费产品或服务,B选项“You give away some form of free product or service (你提供某种形式的免费产品或服务)”中的free product or service与下文的free product相呼应,总领该段内容,符合语境。故选B项。
39. 根据上文“If your campaign is to be successful you must ensure that you can meet rapidly growing demand for your product or service.(如果你的营销活动要取得成功,你必须确保能够满足对产品或服务快速增长的需求。)”以及下文“instead of increasing your business, your viral campaigns will start to kill it.(你的病毒式营销活动不会促进你的业务增长,反而会摧毁它)”可知,此处应假设需求超过供应能力的情况,A选项“If demand exceeds your ability to supply them(如果需求超过了你供应它们的能力)”承接上文的meet rapidly growing demand,与下文的负面结果形成对比,符合语境。故选A项。
40. 根据上文“You identify and exploit common motivations and behaviours. Most people are driven by a desire to be loved or popular or even financially better off.(你需要识别并利用常见的动机和行为。大多数人都被被爱的渴望、受欢迎的渴望甚至经济状况更好的渴望所驱使)”可知,此处应衔接这些渴望与互联网传播的关系,G选项“These desires are part of what generates the huge amount of Internet communication each day(这些渴望是每天产生大量互联网交流的部分原因)”中的These desires指代上文的a desire to be loved or popular or even financially better off,解释了这些渴望与病毒式营销的关联,符合语境。故选G项。

He said the toy did not require extra features 62 (generate) sounds or other effects. As is known to all, children’s Lego creations already do move and make noises through the power of their imaginations,” he told BBC.
The company’s chief product and 63 (market) officer, Julia Goldin, 64 (previous) told BBC it viewed digital technology as an opportunity to “expand physical play and physical building”.
“We don’t look at the digital world as 65 threat,” she said — adding that its smart range weaves (编入) interactivity “seamlessly” with its physical blocks.

One possible version:
A Campus Upgrade Tip
I would like to put forward a proposal for campus upgrading, namely the establishment of Book Corners in the school corridors.
Specifically, delicate bookshelves could be installed at the corners of each floor’s corridor. These shelves could be stocked with a diverse range of reading materials including storybooks, science magazines and classic novels. Students could drop by during breaks or after school, enjoying a quiet space to unwind from heavy studies. Not only will these corners encourage us to read regularly, but they will also add cultural charm to our campus, fostering a stronger reading atmosphere.
I am looking forward to seeing these reading corners come to life.
Another possible version:
A Campus Upgrade Tip
I would like to propose adding corner culture walls in the corridors.
We can place them at the L-shaped corners of corridors on each floor. As for design, one section can display students’ calligraphy, paintings and short essays about campus life; another can share quotes from famous scholars or essential knowledge points. Besides, a small interactive area can be designed, where students post notes sharing insights into personal growth or study tips. Such culture walls will not only refresh the corridor’s look but also let students experience the cultural charm of the campus in daily walks.
I truly believe these corner culture walls will bring fresh vitality to our campus.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Para 1. The next morning, Li Ming woke up to find the puppy missing from its bed.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Para 2. A few days later, the puppy’s condition gradually improved.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________【答案】
The next morning, Li Ming woke up to find the puppy missing from its bed. Panicked, he rushed out of his room, only to see his parents standing in the living room, their expressions unreadable. His heart sank as he noticed the puppy curled up on the couch, wrapped in a blanket. His father cleared his throat and said, “We found it this morning. Why didn’t you tell us?” Li Ming hesitated, then explained how he had found the puppy and couldn’t bear to leave it in the cold. To his surprise, his mother sighed and said, “We understand, but you should have told us sooner. We’ll take it to the vet today.” Relief washed over Li Ming as he realized his parents weren’t angry — they were concerned. Thanks to everyone’s care, the puppy began to regain its strength.
A few days later, the puppy’s condition gradually improved. Something unexpected happened that changed everything. The vet had confirmed the puppy’s leg was sprained but would heal with care. Li Ming’s parents, seeing how devoted he was to the little dog, started to warm up to the idea of keeping it. One evening, as the puppy playfully chased a ball in the living room, Li Ming’s father smiled and said, “Maybe having a pet isn’t such a bad idea after all.” From then on, the puppy became a beloved member of the family, bringing joy and laughter to their home. Li Ming couldn’t have been happier — his act of kindness had not only saved a life but also brought his family closer together.

W: I don’t like wearing all this safety equipment. It is heavy.
M: I don’t either, but it does protect our lungs from the poisonous gases.
W: You’re right. I just wish it were more comfortable.

M: I loved that Thai meal in that little relaxed place last night. It was delicious and great!
W: Hmmm ... Normally, I go for Indian, and the place I always go to is so lively! What did you order?
M: Green curry and mango rice.
W: Delicious! We should sample that beautiful new Chinese spot soon.

W: Sarah published her first book last weekend. Did you get a chance to congratulate her?
M: I’m planning to visit her this Friday.
W: Aren’t we supposed to attend a photography workshop that day?
M: Right. I’ll have to reschedule it for the following day, then.

W: Good afternoon, I’m here for Emma Kidman’s latest show. I wonder if the gallery offers any tours.
M: Yes, but the next available guided tour starts at 6 pm. Would you like me to book it for you?

M: Hello! How can I help you today?
W: Hi! I’m looking to rent an apartment with cooking facilities. It needs to be clean, bright, and away from a noisy main road. Also, I don’t want to share a bathroom.
M: Okay, let me check... I’m sorry, but right now, we only have places with shared bathrooms available. However, I can put you on a waiting list in case something else opens up.
W: Thanks for your help! Here’s my phone number. Give me a call if you find a place that works. Anyway, I’ve got to go. I’m meeting some friends in the cafeteria.
M: No problem. I’ll keep you updated.

W: I can’t decide whether to go to university or get a job. What do you think?
M: Well, if I were you, I would go on studying.
W: But I don’t even know what to study.
M: I advise you to major in economics.
W: That’s what my parents want me to do.
M: You should take their advice. They know what’s best for you. The more you learn, the better job you’ll get.
W: But my friends will have jobs and have a lot of fun while I spend all my time doing reading and writing.
M: But if you go to university, you will still have time for fun.
W: What you say makes sense. I’ll think it over. Thank you for the advice.

M: Let’s plan a trip for the summer break.
W: All right. I heard there are some little villages with beautiful scenery and interesting shops.
M: Oh no, we don’t have that much money to do some shopping.
W: You’re right. Anyway, I’d like to have a look. I just heard there are some really nice arts in the villages. The best place to find a good variety of local artworks, such as paintings and handmade jewelry, is Richmond. The only trouble is that there aren’t any places to eat. Luckily, there are some great restaurants and cafes in Rosemount, fifteen minutes by bike away from it. And Sun Valley, which is a ten minutes’ walk from Richmond, is also famous for its local foods.
M: Great. Are there any youth hostels around there?
W: Yes, there’s one in Richmond. But what about sleeping in a tent? We haven’t done that for ages, and we don’t have much money to stay in a hotel.
M: Sounds fun.

W: Did you have a good weekend? I heard you went on a sailing trip.
M: It was too expensive, so I just went fishing. What did you do, Emily?
W: I wanted to play basketball, but I couldn’t find anyone to play with, so I played tennis with my brother instead.
M: Why don’t you ask Jenny? She’s good at sports.
W: Oh no, that’s right. She was busy at the park. There was a badminton competition. I hope she won a prize.
M: Did you hear about Joe? He broke his leg when playing football.
W: Oh no, that will stop him going swimming with me next weekend. Are you going to the beach? I’ll come with you. I love it there.
M: Would you like to take me there?
W: Of course. The more people, the better. We can ask Andy as well. He watched a lot of films at home this weekend, but he says he wants to do something outside next weekend.
M: Great. I’ll ask him if he wants to come.
