White Fang sensed something terrible. He gave a low and sad howl (嚎叫) outside.
In fact, Scott was sad too. He was sad about the idea of leaving White Fang, but he knew the place like California wasn’t suitable for a dog. Five or six times he changed his mind. But in the end he decided firmly not to take him. He told himself, “He would hate living in a city, anyway.”
Then White Fang saw his love-master packing his things into a bag. His god was going away again, and, like last time, he wasn’t taking White Fang with him. That night he howled long, pointing his nose to the stars and telling them of his sadness.
The next day Scott called White Fang into the room. “You poor thing,” he said, rubbing his ears. “I’m starting the long trail, where you cannot follow. Now give me a last goodbye howl.” But White Fang didn’t howl. He put his head between his master’s arm and body. Then, at that moment from the Yukon River, the boat’s whistle sounded.
“You need to go now,” said Matt. The two men locked the doors and went outside. From inside they could hear White Fang howling more and more loudly. He was howling like dogs do when their master is dead.
Down by the river, everything was busy. The two men stood shaking hands, but Matt’s hand suddenly dropped as he saw White Fang sitting on the deck a few meters away. Scott saw him as well. When Scott patted the dog, he noticed blood on his nose and a fresh cut between his eyes. The boat’s whistle sounded again. Scott bent down to White Fang, “Howl for me now, you brave guy!” White Fang howled happily and knew he would stay with his god all the time.

Wolves don’t seem like climate heroes. But a new study has found that reintroducing (再次引进) them into the wild will help the climate.
Wolves encourage forests to grow, and bigger forests take in more carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas that traps the Sun’s heat around the Earth and causes climate change.
Today, there are no wild wolves in Scotland. They died out more than 250 years ago because humans hunted them. With no wolves left, the number of red deer has increased because there are now no natural predators (天敌) to kill them. Although this is good for the deer, it’s not so good for Scotland’s forests. Red deer like to eat young trees, which stops forests from growing. Only 4% of Scotland’s land is covered by forests.
A team of researchers (研究人员) uses AI to watch the effects of reintroducing wolves into the wild in Scotland. The team works out that around 167 wolves will be enough to bring down the number of red deer. Forests can get a chance to grow. What’s more, they can take in and store one million tons of extra carbon dioxide each year. So, reintroducing wolves to Scotland is good for its climate.
The researchers know their study will not be welcomed. Some people don’t want wolves to return into the wild. Farmers are worried that wolves will attack their animals. Lee Schofield, who works on the study, says the team wants to provide new information to help people understand the importance of reintroducing wolves into the wild.
58. What does the underlined word “greenhouse” mean in the second paragraph?
A. 绿屋 B. 温室 C. 草房 D. 环保室
59. What happened in Scotland without wolves left?
A. The number of red deer is increasing. B. It is easy for woodlands to grow well.
C. People hunted red deer instead of wolves. D. The weather in Scotland is becoming colder.
60. What does the writer mainly talk about in Paragraph 4?
A. Around 167 wolves were not enough.
B. AI helps people reintroduce wolves to Scotland.
C. The forests take in millions of tons of carbon dioxide.
D. Reintroducing wolves has positive effects on the climate.
61. What can we infer (推断) from the passage?
A. Some people don’t want wolves to return into the wild.
B. Farmers in Scotland welcome the idea of wolves returning.
C. Reintroducing wolves causes carbon dioxide to increase in the air.
D. The team will keep working on reintroducing wolves into the wild.

Meteorologists are scientists who study changes in the Earth’s weather and predict storms. Scientists say that there are about 16 million thunderstorms on Earth every year and at any moment, about 2,000 are happening in different places across the planet.
The word storm is used to describe lots of extreme weather conditions. These can include strong winds, heavy rain, snow, and thunder and lightning.
A sudden drop in the weight of the air can mean bad weather is on its way. Meteorologists use a barometer (气压计) to predict storms. Some animals seem able to sense these changes too. Scientists have noticed sharks swimming to deeper waters before storms and birds changing their direction of flight to avoid storms.
The idea became popular in the 1950s and organizations across the world now do the same. The Met Office, which studies the UK’s weather, started naming storms in 2015. It works with organizations. Every year they ask the public to suggest names for a new list.
The 2023—2024 storm season reached the letter L in the list — the furthest it has ever got. However, the season before only had two named storms. Storm Eowyn in January was the strongest to hit the UK in the last 10 years, with wind speeds over 100 miles per hour. It was almost as powerful as the Great Storm of 1987. Then, 15 million trees were blown down. The UK isn’t getting more storms but scientists think climate change has increased rainfall in storms, making them more intense.
To keep people safe, the Met Office gives the public weather warnings. For Storm Eowyn, the UK Government also sent emergency messages to people’s phones.
62. What is Meteorologists’ job according to the passage?
A. Sending messages to people’s phones. B. Inventing a barometer to predict storms.
C. Helping birds change their direction of flight. D. Studying changes in weather and predicting storms.
63. Which sentence should go in the empty box in Paragraph 4?
A. Studying climate change makes it easy to prevent storms.
B. Meteorologists and animals can predict storms in different ways.
C. Naming storms will make people more aware of possible dangers.
D. The Met Office gives some advice on how to keep safe in the storms.
64. The writer uses some numbers in Paragraph 5 to show ________.
A. Storm Eowyn happened in January B. Storm Eowyn was the strongest storm
C. Storm Eowyn was named after the public D. Storm Eowyn blew down millions of trees
65. What might be the best title of the article?

A23a is the world’s largest iceberg (冰山). It has started to move again after staying in the same place for more than 30 years. It is now slowly travelling across the Southern Ocean near Antarctica (南极洲).
A23a is huge. It is about 400 metres thick and covers an area nearly the size of the US state of Rhode Island. Its journey has been full of interesting and amazing stories. The iceberg first broke away from Antarctica in 1986. Soon after that, it stopped on the seafloor and couldn’t move at all.
So why is it moving again now? Scientists say the iceberg melted a little and became lighter. This helped it move away. They also say this is a natural condition and is not directly caused by climate change.
Scientists think A23a will move towards warmer waters. When it reaches those places, it will probably break into smaller pieces.
“It’s really exciting to see A23a on the move again after stopping for so long,” said Andrew Meijers, one of the scientists. Scientists are now watching A23a closely. They think studying the changes can help people understand how such giant icebergs influence sea animals and the environment along the way.
In a word, it is very important to pay attention to changes in nature. Changes in nature help to protect the environment.

阅读表达
