I've been into volunteer work since childhood. As a girl, I volunteered at animal shelters, played music at nursing homes, and helped with community cleanup. In college, I volunteered heavily at a large yearly conference (会议), where I first met and fell in love with my husband Tom, who was on my team of co-volunteers.
Volunteering has been a way of life for me and I wouldn't do it if I didn't enjoy it. Most of the time, you do feel that you're making a difference. Once I led a project that provided food to Syrian families. When it was nearing Ramadan, the biggest holiday season in Islam, I filled the food package with nuts, olive oil, sweets... We took the package and arrived just as a Syrian family was sitting on their floor for breakfast. They had nothing but some bread and a pot of tea. The mother cried when seeing us, saying she would never forget our kindness gratefully.
Another time, some friends and I volunteered to a church with only a few elderly residents. The churchyard needed attention. We spent the weekend in the home of one of these old ladies so we could clean and repair the churchyard. I'll never forget the new life in her eyes as she stayed with us. It broke my heart to remember this old lady with pleasure for such small efforts we made.
Volunteer work is satisfying not because you have done some work, but because your presence has an effect on people around. It makes me grateful for what I have and gives me a chance to serve people.

Growing up in a small village in southern Ghana, Osci Boateng watched many of his family members and neighbors struggle to access basic health care. In many regions of the country, it can take hours to get to the nearest hospital. Boateng said many people lost their lives due to preventable or treatable diseases. His grandmother and aunt were among them.
Feeling an urgent call to help, Boateng decided he would make it his life's mission to bring health care to remote communities in Ghana where education and preventative health care were lacking.
Boateng wanted to find a way to remove these barriers to health care access and education. He started his non-profit organization, OKB Hope Foundation. In 2021, he converted (转变) a van (面包车) into a mobile doctor's office and started bringing health care directly to those in need. A few times a week, the mobile clinic and medical team travel long distances to remote communities and provide free routine medical care.
On each trip, Boateng's team consists of a nurse, a physician assistant, a doctor, and an operation assistant. In the van, they can run basic labs like bloodwork and urinalysis (尿液分析) as well as provide medicine. “It's like a one-stop shop for people,” said Boateng, adding that most of the people they see have one health issue or another. Since its launch, the Hope Health Van has served more than 4,000 Ghanaians across more than 45 rural communities who otherwise don't have easily accessible medical care, according to Boateng.
Boateng has gone all in on his OKB Hope Foundation, recently quitting his job to dedicate his time to bringing health care to his home country. First-year college students are often expected or required to live in dormitories. In the rest years, it's usually up to those students to decide whether to live on or off campus.
But some schools don't provide an option and require four years of on-campus living for full-time students. Living on campus has been shown to increase retention (保留) and attendance rates among freshman and second-year students, according to a 2021 report. There are exceptions, however. At some colleges, students may be freed from the requirement if they are, for instance, commuters (通勤生), fifth-year seniors, at least 23 years of age or legally married.
Residential housing at colleges is not limited to shared rooms and bathrooms. Alternatives include flats, apartments, Greek houses or living-learning communities for students with shared interests. On-campus students also have access to services and resources such as residence life staff who can help if a housing issue arises. When students live in a community, they are forced to live with different people, learn more about themselves and about the others, and tell each other their stories.
On the other hand, off-campus living provides students with more independence, as they are not constrained by school housing policies. Off-campus students gain more real-world experience in areas like paying their own bills, finding renter's insurance, cooking their own meals and negotiating or reviewing contracts. If students are choosing to live off campus, they should really think it through and talk to someone that lived off campus. Do their homework and look at all the costs before they make that decision. Make sure, too, that they are choosing people that they can live with.
At first glance, off-campus housing can appear less expensive. But the additional expenses outside of rent-like utilities, groceries, Internet access, cable and furniture-are often overlooked. To reduce off-campus costs, some students choose to overpack houses or apartments, sometimes with four or five people in a two-bedroom house. Unlike off-campus housing, the total cost of living on campus is typically all-inclusive, covering rent, utilities, furniture, Wi-Fi and a meal plan.

32.Why do some colleges require all the students to live on campus?
A.To keep them stay longer on campus for classes.
B.To make sure all students can live in shared rooms.
C.To make as much profit as possible for the colleges.
D.To monitor all of their students as easily as possible.
答案:A
解析:细节理解题。根据第二段中的“But some schools don't provide ... according to a 2021 report.”可知,一份报告显示,学校要求学生在校内生活能提高大一和大二学生的留校率和出勤率。由此可知,有些大学要求所有的学生都住在校园里是为了让他们在校园的上课时间更长。故选A项。
33.What should students do before living off campus?
A.They should find someone to take care of them.
B.They should fully develop the ability to live alone.
C.They should learn all aspects of off-campus living.
D.They should seek accommodation through an agent.
答案:C
解析:细节理解题。根据第四段中的“Off-campus students gain more ... someone that lived off campus.”可知,住在校外,学生要考虑支付自己的账单,找保险、自己做饭、协商或者审查合同等方面;根据“Do their homework and look at all the costs before they make that decision. Make sure, too, that they are choosing people that they can live with.”可知,作者建议选择校外居住前要做足功课,考虑所有的成本以及确保选择了可以一起生活的人。由此可知,选择校外居住前需要考虑到方方面面的问题。故选C项。

People usually consider voluntary work as a completely selfless act, but voluntary work has its place in everyone's lives, and my personal experiences have confirmed my belief in this.
36 I once cleaned up flats where the poor lived in. The space was overcrowded and the items were covered in dust. I couldn't contain my judgment and was critical about them. However, after talking to the residents and hearing about their misfortunes, I regretted my hasty judgment. This allowed me to know more about the less fortunate who don't share my lifestyles. 37 Life is more complex than expected and I should sympathize with the disadvantaged.
Volunteer work has reminded me to cherish and appreciate little things in life. When I volunteered to teach life skills to students with cerebral palsy (脑瘫), I found that they were very grateful to the teachers and assistants by saying “thank you” and smiling. 38 Consequently, this has made me more mindful of my priorities in life, and more deliberate in not letting insignificant things bother me. Doing voluntary work has taught me to be happier and more grateful.
Doing voluntary work has given my life more meaning. 39 However, excessively pursuing them can often lead to increased discontent and can't give meaning to one's life. After doing voluntary work and learning the stories of others, I have a stronger sense of purpose in my life. Instead of just being absorbed in my own wants and needs, I make up my mind to try my best to help those in need. 40
A.I felt that they had taught me a lesson on gratitude.
B.It is easy to be obsessed with material wants in society.
C.I am now able to go through life with more love and compassion.
D.Volunteer work has provided me with opportunities to make friends.
E.With the determination, the decisions I make are now more meaningful.
F.Moreover, I realized they are often unreasonably judged by other people.
G.Voluntary work has helped me better understand the lives of the less fortunate.

Since the age of seven, I had always dreamed of being one of the student leaders who we looked up to. They took responsibility for us, gave instructions, organized school activities, and proudly wore their badges while carrying our school flag and walking on the playground. They represented us and gave speeches on school issues, becoming our role models.
As I grew older, I became qualified to participate in the school elections. I prepared my election speech and on the day of the speeches, everyone balloted(不记名投票).I was hopeful and prayed for a victory. However, the following morning when we gathered on the school grounds for the principal's declaration of the outcome, reality hit me hard. I realized that I had no chance of winning-I was neither well known nor too pretty. Like many preteens facing rejection, I became depressed and felt as though I had no friends supporting me.
Later that day, as I cried in my room, I took a deep breath and decided to change my mindset. I refused to see myself as a failure and made a determination to run for the school elections again the following year-this time, with a plan to win. I sat down at my study table and wrote down my thoughts.
Comparing myself with other competitors, I figured out that I had a lot to improve. With a whole year ahead, I began to play my election strategies.
To gain recognition and demonstrate my ability to represent my fellow students, I started making new friends and helping them in various ways at school. Additionally, I attended a public speaking course to learn how to deliver a great election speech. By the time the election came around, I was well-prepared, and I delivered a passionate speech on the stage.

参考范文:
The following day, I anxiously awaited for the results. I sat in the classroom, my heart pounding like a drum, each time someone passed by I would nervously look at them, hoping they would bring the news I was waiting for. Then, the principal took the stage and began to announce the election results. I gripped the pencil in my hand tightly, barely able to breathe. When I heard my name, I could hardly believe my ears. I had won! I had really won! I felt an immense joy and excitement.I had finally achieved my dream and I had become a student leader.
Later, I realized that I had achieved far more than what I had initially set out to do. Not only had I won the election and become a student leader, but more importantly, I had found myself. I learned how to face setbacks, how to stand up from failures, and how to strive for my goals. I also learned how to connect with others, how to help them and how to become a leader worthy of respect. All these experiences made me more determined, more mature, and more confident. I knew that no matter what difficulties I would face in the future, I had the ability to face and overcome them. Because I had proven that as long as there is determination and perseverance, I can achieve my dreams.
