Dear Joe,
I’m excited to hear you’ll come to China soon! Here are some suggestions for you.
To learn Chinese quickly, you can listen to more Chinese songs—it helps with pronunciation and is fun. Also, finding an online partner to practice speaking with is a great way to improve. As for a traditional art piece to bring back, I suggest paper cutting. It stands for good luck and best wishes, and it’s light and easy to carry.
I hope you find these ideas helpful!
Yours,
Li Hua

①Imagine walking through a quiet Australian grassland. Suddenly, you hear a tiny, strange “Ooom” sound. That sound might belong to one of the rarest birds in the world—the Plains-wanderer (领鹑)! Scientists in Australia have just used AI to locate these birds. This discovery will help protect the endangered birds.
②Plains-wanderers are tiny, only about 15 centimeters tall. When they feel frightened, they crouch down (蹲下) to hide or run instead of flying. “There is no bird like it in the world.” said a scientist. They are very picky about their habitats (栖息地). These tiny birds live in grasslands, but not just any grassland. There can’t be too much grass or too little. For this reason, scientists sometimes call them the “Goldilocks” of animals.
③Plains-wanderers used to be common in eastern Australia. But over the years, farms and cities have taken over their home. Now, there are only 250 to 1,000 birds left in the wild.
④To protect these rare birds, scientists first needed to know where they were. They worked together and decided to “listen” for the birds. Female Plains-wanderers make an unusual “Ooom” sound, and this was the key to locating them.
⑤The researchers set up 35 recording devices to catch these sounds. The devices collected tens of thousands of hours of recordings. Humans could not check all of it, so the team used AI to help. The AI detected (识别) calls from two locations, and scientists later confirmed (证实) the findings. One scientist said it felt like “finding gold.” It is the first time in over 30 years that the bird has been found west of Melbourne.
⑥Now, scientists will work with landowners to protect these birds and their grasslands. And they are still listening, hoping to find even more of these “Goldilocks” birds.
34.What do we know about Plains-wanderers from the passage?
A.They are big in size. B.They prefer to live in forests.
C.They are in danger now. D.They’ll fly away when scared.
35.Why are Plains-wanderers called the “Goldilocks” of animals?
A.Because they have golden-colored feathers.
B.Because they need habitats to be “just right”.
C.Because they always make a special sound.
36.Which of the following sentences has the same meaning as the word locate in paragraph 4?
A.The new library is located in the city center.
B.I plan to locate in a small village after retirement.
C.Can you locate the nearest hospital on your phone?
D.The company decided to locate its factory near the port.
37.To help protect Plains-wanderers, which action is most directly supported by the passage?
A.Using AI to find them, then protecting their habitats.
B.Planting large amounts of grass across Australia.
C.Using AI to find them, then keeping them in the zoo.

Years ago when I worked at a small local grocery store, I became familiar with an old lady. She was a regular customer, and we ended up getting in the habit of chatting whenever she came in.
One day, during one of our chats I mentioned that I was going to take a day off for my 20th birthday later that month. She told me, “Well, I’ll have to bake you some cookies for your birthday, then.” I’d told her a couple weeks before though, and so the moment had slipped my mind by the time my birthday came around.
Two days after my birthday, I was coming out of the restroom in the back when I heard someone calling my name. I walked back up to the front and saw her there. She came up to me, handed me a Ziploc bag with 5 cookies in it, and wished me a happy late birthday. It took all I had to hold back my tears in front of her. I’d even forgotten that she said she’d do that for me. She remembered to take the time out of her day to make the cookies for me when she didn’t even have to! And then she even had the humility to say, “They aren’t my best work, but I wanted to do something for you.”
After she left, I called my mom and boyfriend and cried while I told them each what happened. I just wish I knew when her birthday was so I could do something nice for her.
38.What did the writer and the old lady often do in the store?
A.They chatted a lot. B.They made cakes. C.They served customers.
39.What would the old lady do according to paragraph 2?
A.She would take a day off.
B.She would visit the writer’s mother.
C.She would bake cookies for the writer.
40.What does the underlined part “the moment had slipped my mind” mean?
A.The moment had worried me.
B.I had fallen down and got hurt.
C.I had forgotten about the moment.
41.What does the text mainly talk about?
A.What the writer did on her birthday.
B.How an old lady’s kindness moved the writer.
C.Why the writer called her mother and boyfriend.

Math isn’t just numbers in textbooks. It’s all around us, making our world more beautiful and convenient.
Math in Poems
In Chinese poems, the numbers give us the freedom to imagine. As Li Bai wrote, “I’ve sailed a thousand miles through Gorges in a day”, “My boat has left ten thousand mountains far away”, “The waterfall rushes down three thousand feet from high” — these numbers show what Li Bai saw and how he felt. When we read the lines, there are pictures in mind.
Math in Paintings
Art and math might seem different, but together they create wonderful works! Some studies show that when Leonardo da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa, he followed a special math rule called the “golden ratio” (黄金比例). The ratio was hidden in different parts of the painting, like the size of the canvas (画布), the face of the lady and the background behind her. This makes the painting beautiful and impressive (印象深刻的).
Math in Traffic
How do traffic lights “know” when to change? Traffic engineers use traffic flow models (交通流量模型), a kind of math model, to help cars move smoothly. They collect plenty of data like how many cars pass by, when people cross the street, busy times of day and special events in the city. With these models, engineers can do lots of math and run many tests to study how the traffic moves better. This allows them to find the best timing for each traffic light. It makes our city green, smart and livable!
Math makes our lives better and helps us understand the world in many surprising ways!
42.What does the numbers give us in Chinese poems?
43.According to the text, where was the “golden ratio” hidden?

B.Because they need habitats to be “just right”.
C.Because they always make a special sound.

A.The new library is located in the city center.
B.I plan to locate in a small village after retirement.
C.Can you locate the nearest hospital on your phone?

37.To help protect Plains-wanderers, which action is most directly supported by the passage?

【答案】34.C 35.B 36.C 37.A
根据第一段“This discovery will help protect the endangered birds.这个发现将有助于保护这种濒危鸟类。”和第三段“Now, there are only 250 to 1,000 birds left in the wild.如今,野生领鹑仅剩下250至1000只。”可知,领鹑如今正濒临灭绝,身处险境。故选C。
35.细节理解题。根据第二段“They are very picky about their habitats. These tiny birds live in grasslands, but not just any grassland. There can’t be too much grass or too little. For this reason, scientists sometimes call them the ‘Goldilocks’ of animals.它们对栖息地十分挑剔。这种小鸟生活在草原上,但并非随便哪种草原都可以,草的数量不能太多,也不能太少。正因如此,科学家有时称它们为动物界的‘金发姑娘’。”可知,领鹑被称作动物界的“金发姑娘”,是因为它们对栖息地的要求必须“恰到好处”。故选B。
36.词句猜测题。根据第四段“To protect these rare birds, scientists first needed to know where they were.为了保护这种珍稀鸟类,科学家首先需要知道它们在哪里。”可知,“locate”在此处意为“找到……的位置、定位”。C选项“你能在手机上找到最近的医院的位置吗?”中的“locate”也表示“找到……的位置”,与原文词义一致。故选C。
37.细节理解题。根据第一段“Scientists in Australia have just used AI to locate these birds. This discovery will help protect the endangered birds.澳大利亚的科学家刚刚利用人工智能定位到了这些鸟类。这一发现将有助于保护这种濒危鸟类。”和第六段“Now, scientists will work with landowners to protect these birds and their grasslands.如今,科学家将与土地所有者合作,保护这些鸟类及其赖以生存的草原。”可知,文章中支持的保护领鹑的直接做法是先用人工智能定位它们,再保护它们的栖息地,所以,A项“利用人工智能找到它们,然后保护它们的栖息地。”符合题意。故选A。

【答案】38.A 39.C 40.C 41.B

39.细节理解题。根据原文“She told me, ‘Well, I’ll have to bake you some cookies for your birthday, then’”可知,老妇人说要给作者烘焙生日饼干。故选C。
40.词句猜测题。结合后文“I’d even forgotten that she said she’d do that for me”可推知,“the moment had slipped my mind”意为“我忘记了那个事情(老妇人要做饼干的约定)”。故选C。
41.主旨大意题。文章核心是老妇人的善意(记住生日并做饼干)让作者深受感动,“How an old lady's kindness moved the writer”最贴合主题。故选B。
阅读短文,根据短文内容,完成下列各题
