The first week of September was a week that I had been expecting all summer. I didn’t want summer to end, but I was eager to go to high school for my first week.
When I got to school on the morning of the first day, I realized how large the school was and how many students went there. I ended up in the wrong classroom because of the size of the school. And then a kind senior showed up and guided me to my classroom before I was late. I was happy to see that in a class of unfamiliar faces, the only open seat was next to my good friend, Jimmy. My science teacher seemed like a good teacher.
After finishing four periods, I didn’t feel too bad. However, the fifth period changed everything. I didn’t feel ready after all. My literature teacher is Mr. Smith. The first week passed quickly. Although a lot of things were overwhelming (令人不知所措的): the size of the campus, the crowds and the seniors, having a totally different experience that I had never had before was really exciting.
Now, I’m really happy about high school. I have lots of friends in my classes, I really like my teachers and I’m meeting new people.

Do you speak a dialect (方言) in daily life? While many Chinese people speak Mandarin (普通话), some local dialects are in danger of disappearing. To save them, the Chinese government started the Chinese Language Resources Protection Project a few years ago.
This project looks at how people talk in 1,712 places. 54 It has helped China to build the largest language resource library in the world. There’s an online library where people can learn dialects from over 6 million audio clips (音频) and over 1 million videos.
55 According to British linguist Harold Palmer, dialects are a key to storing local cultures. Language truly shows the history, the beliefs and the biases of an area, he said.
Scholar Zhang Hongming talked about his worry over the disappearance of dialects. “For over 10 years, in the Wu dialect areas such as Shanghai and Suzhou, children aged 6 to 15 can understand but hardly speak the dialect. Meanwhile, young people above 15 years old can sometimes speak the dialect well, but not very well. 56 ” he said.
So how did China make this big library? “ 57 ” said Cao Zhiyun, chief expert on the project. Over five years, more than 350 universities and research groups joined in, along with over 4,500 experts and more than 6,000 dialect speakers.
58 This includes creating digital tools like apps and mobile dictionaries to help people learn dialects.
A.The project is now entering into its second part.

Xu Xiake was an explorer of the late Ming Dynasty who travelled huge mountains and deep valleys in China. He was one of the greatest explorers in Chinese history.
After his death, Xu left behind his famous book, Xu Xiake’s Travels, which provides meaningful materials to the Chinese geological research. It included a record of what he saw, heard and thought about during his travels and was a personal diary that was not published during his lifetime. It was said that Xu was a filial (孝顺的) son and the beginning purpose of his travel diary was to allow his mother to travel the world through his eyes at home. He followed the ancient teaching that says, “When one’s parents are alive, one must not travel to far places.” For this reason, when his mother was still alive, he mainly travelled the southeast half of the country and would not leave home for too long.
The most important part of his travels was his ten-thousand-mile journey to the southwest. He travelled from Zhejiang to Jiangxi, Hunan, Guangxi, then Guizhou, and Yunnan. This journey took him four years and he wrote about ten times more than he did in the past. In the morning, he would be climbing the mountains and crossing rivers. At night, he would lay out a piece of paper and record his daily experiences beside an oil lamp.
Xu lived his life travelling mountains and rivers all day long. He was an outstanding person in history. In fact, Xu who lived 400 years ago was more like today’s backpackers-very cool!

China is such a big country. Are the north and the south very different? The following are some opinions.
Thirteen-year-old Linda from Fujian thinks 74 biggest difference is the language. Each place in China has 75 own dialect (方言). For example, people in her hometown Xiamen speak the Minnan dialect. But visitors from the north can barely understand it! Luckily, China has spent much time 76 (teach) people Mandarin (普通话), especially older people. Her grandma didn’t speak Mandarin before. When she moved to the city five years ago, she began to learn it 77 community volunteers. Now she is 64 and can speak Mandarin 78 (good)!
Fifteen-year-old Andy from Tianjin believes the food is quite different. He grew up in Tianjin, a 79 (north) city. Tianjin is famous for baozi and jianbing. In 2012, his parents took him to travel in Hunan. He was 80 (surprise) by the rice there. It was not as sweet and glutinous as in the north. This is 81 of the difference in rain and heat conditions. 2026 is the Year of the Horse. In Chinese culture, horses are seen as a symbol of energy and progress. Here are two interesting stories about horses. Both can teach us 85 lessons about life.
The 86 story is called The Year of the Monkey and the Month of the Horse. Long ago in a forest, a little monkey was always in a hurry. If he 87 a tree today, he wanted fruit tomorrow; if he made a wish in the morning, he would ask 88 it hadn’t come true by noon. Old Horse smiled and said, “Little one, good things need time. Fruits ripen (成熟), and wishes come true, only in the ‘Year of the Monkey and Month of the Horse’”. “But when is that?” asked the monkey, scratching (挠) his head. “It arrives when you learn to wait with 89 ,” Old Horse replied. So the monkey began watering the tree every day. Before he knew it, the tree grew with sweet fruit, and his wishes seemed 90 like stars. He finally understood: true growth happens in the ordinary (平常的) days we spend with care and patience.
The second one is Looking at Flowers While Riding a Horse. Once, a man rode a strong horse quickly through a spring 91 . Flowers were everywhere, but the horse moved fast. Later, he told his friend 92 , “I saw so many flowers!” His friend asked, “What colors? What 93 ?” The man fell 94 .He couldn’t answer, because he had never truly stopped to look. This story reminds us: In our fast-paced lives, slowing down allows us to see clearly and appreciate real beauty. Life isn’t just about 95 ; it’s also about depth (深度) and attention. Like a horse, move ahead with both purpose and energy.

An Invention that is Changing the World
Smartphones are one of the greatest inventions in the world. They were first invented by IBM in New York, the US, in 1992.
In the past, people used phones only to talk. Now, with smartphones, we can do almost everything: chat with friends, take photos, shop online and even study. We can share our happy moments with others anytime. They make our life much easier and more colorful.
In my opinion, smartphones are really helpful, but we should use them in a right way. Don’t spend too much time on them, or they will be bad for our study and health.

It shows the city's history and people's love for horses.
Horses are also popular in Chinese art.Today, many people still like pictures of horses.Xu Beihong is a
famous Chinese painter, and he painted many horses. In his pictures, the horses look strong. Some run very fast.

Horses are very important in people’s daily life. On the Tea-Horse Road, horses carry tea and silk across mountains and rivers. The road is long and sometimes difficult, but horses keep going. Horses are also popular in Chinese art. Today, many people still like pictures of horses. Xu Beihong is a famous Chinese painter, and he painted many horses. In his pictures, the horses look strong. Some run very fast, and some are ready to run. When people look at his horse pictures, they can feel excited.

Smith. He told us that we would have to write 40 essays and read AP-level books such as The Odyssey this term. I love reading and writing, but come on, 40 ESSAYS? AP-level books? Now I was anxious.
The courses in high school seem like they’re going to get much harder, but they haven’t yet. Even though my classes look hard, they look really exciting too.

Last year, he visited Hunan again. The rice 82 the table was no different from that in his hometown. Why?
Because the restaurant owners have 83 (buy) rice from the northeast online since the e-commerce (商业) developed 84 (great) in recent years.

Zhang Zhongtao, who works at Beijing Friendship Hospital, said that obesity was causing big health and money problems around the world. It is now a serious public health problem in China. By the year of 2030, it is expected that China will spend about 22% of all its healthcare money on problems related to being overweight or obese.
At a meeting, Zhang asked people to pay more attention to obesity and how to manage weight. He believes that the government and society do not focus enough on this problem. “We hope to work with public charities to give help to obese patients who need to lose weight medically but can’t pay for it.” he said.
He also explained why people become overweight. It is mainly because they eat more energy than they run out of. In the north of China, people like to eat noodles, and in the south, they prefer rice. Both foods have carbohydrates (碳水化合物), but eating noodles can make you gain more weight. Climate (气候) also affects people in the north. Because it’s colder, they like to eat foods with more calories, like fried chicken and chocolate, to stay warm.

It included a record of what he saw, heard and thought about during his travels and was a personal diary that was not published during his lifetime.
