I realized my mistake. Staring at the silent chat history, my words echoed in my mind — “just noise,” “hurt my ears.” I had been disrespectful to what Tom loved deeply. My pride had blinded me. True friendship shouldn’t mean agreeing on everything, but respecting each other’s passions. Classical music’s complexity was my joy, just as rock’s raw energy was his. I decided to apologize, not just for the argument, but for dismissing his feelings. I needed him to know that our friendship was far more important than any difference in music taste.
With a nervous heart, I pressed the doorbell of Tom’s house. When he opened the door, his surprised expression made me more anxious. “Tom,” I began, my voice slightly trembling, “I’m really sorry. I was wrong to call your music ‘noise’. It was rude and I miss talking to you.” I handed him a USB stick. “I made you a playlist... it has some rock songs that I found online that I thought I might try to understand, and... one of my favorite concertos.” Tom looked at the USB, then at me, a small smile breaking through his frown. “I overreacted too,” he admitted, taking the stick. “Maybe you can help me find the ‘artistry’ in this rock music sometime.” We both laughed, the tension melting away. The argument hadn’t ended our friendship; it had taught us how to make it stronger.

Many travelers have toyed with the idea of visiting each national park, but the Goldsteins from Charlotte, North Carolina, made it a reality before their two kids, Luke and Winston, turned 18.They spent six years completing their journey. Dad Bill explained that every school break, they would try to visit parks. Along the way, the family made some sacrifices (牺牲): from eating bread out of a cooler the back of the car to staying in economical accommodations.
Bill credits his wife, Alisa, with managing the budget and keeping costs down. Her advice for others starting their own national park adventures is to begin with parks that are nearby and gradually explore farther. The Goldsteins often visited several parks on one trip, including 11 parks during the summer after their first visit to Yosemite.
The family didn’t need fancy equipment — just the basics like sun protection, first aid, and plenty of water. One of the most dangerous things they faced was dehydration. Luke remembered running out of water 10 miles from the end of a hike at Theodore Roosevelt National Park. They had to depend on patience, faith, and determination to make it back.
A key part of their experience was the Junior ranger Program, which is available at nearly every national park. Kids are invited to complete a list of educational activities to earn a junior ranger badge (徽章), which helps them connect with and understand the park.
Initially, Luke thought being without phone service and away from friends was the worst part. He often complained about tough hikes. But looking back, he realized how the journey shaped him, making him more responsible and appreciative of both his family and nature.
Today, the Goldsteins continue visiting national parks, which continues to teach them the value of determination, family connections, and appreciation of the natural world.
24.What is Alisa Goldstein’s advice for others who will start the national park adventures?
A.Only visiting a park with family at a time.
B.Finding a professional guide during each adventure.
C.Seeking expert financial advice before the adventures.
D.Starting with near parks and exploring farther gradually.
25.How can the kids get the junior ranger badge?
A.By finishing educational activities. B.By hiking 10 miles in the park.
C.By managing the travel budget. D.By visiting all national parks.
26.What is Luke’s attitude towards the trips now?
A.Opposed. B.Grateful. C.Doubtful. D.Unknown.
27.Where can you read the passage?
A.In a fashion magazine. B.In a science textbook.
C.In a travel magazine. D.In a sports newspaper.

(原创题)Everyone knows the feeling after a poor night’s sleep: focusing becomes hard, thoughts wander, and reactions slow down. New research reveals a surprising reason for this. When attention briefly fails due to lack of sleep, a fluid called cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) moves out of the brain. This cleaning process usually happens only during sleep to remove waste built up during the day.
When people are sleep-deprived, their bodies try to compensate by triggering these CSF waves while awake. However, this comes with a cost: attention drops sharply during these moments. Laura Lewis, a professor at MIT, explains that these fluid waves intrude into wakefulness, causing a trade-off where focus is lost exactly when the brain is cleaning itself.
To study this, researchers asked volunteers to perform tasks after both a normal night’s sleep and a night without sleep. While participants worked on visual and auditory tests inside a scanner, machines tracked their brain activity, heart rate, and pupil size. As expected, tired participants performed worse, reacting slower or missing signals entirely.
Interestingly, these attention lapses were linked to body-wide changes. Just before the CSF moved out, pupils became smaller, and heart rates slowed. This suggests a unified system controls both high-level thinking and basic bodily functions. The noradrenergic system, which regulates alertness, might be the key coordinator.
The findings show that the brain desperately tries to clean itself even when awake if sleep is missed. However, this necessary cleaning temporarily shuts down attention. This discovery helps explain why staying awake makes us feel mentally foggy and physically slow, highlighting the critical importance of sleep for both mind and body health.
28. What happens when the CSF waves occur during wakefulness?
A. The brain stores more energy for later use.
B. The heart rate increases to pump more blood.
C. Visual signals become clearer to the sleepy eyes.
D. Attention temporarily fails as the brain cleans itself.
29. What can be inferred about the relationship between pupil size and attention?
A. Larger pupils indicate a deeper state of sleep.
B. Pupil changes happen after attention has fully returned.
C. Smaller pupils may signal an upcoming lapse in focus.
D. Pupil size remains constant regardless of sleep levels.
30. Why did the researchers conduct tests after both rest and sleep loss?
A. To prove that scanners work better on tired people.
B. To teach volunteers how to improve their sleeping habits.
C. To measure the exact amount of waste in the human brain.
D. To compare how the brain and body react under different conditions.
31. What is the main function of the noradrenergic system mentioned in the text?
A. It produces the cerebrospinal fluid needed for cleaning.
B. It prevents the brain from entering a sleep-like state.
C. It likely coordinates alertness and physiological processes.
D. It controls the movement of muscles during physical exercise.

(原创题)Talking to yourself may seem like a strange human habit, but it can actually help machines learn better. Just as internal dialogue helps people organize thoughts and make decisions, new research shows that artificial intelligence (AI) can also improve by using a similar process. Scientists from the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology found that AI systems perform much better when trained to use "inner speech" along with short-term memory. This discovery suggests that learning depends not only on how an AI is built but also on how it interacts with itself during training.
To test this idea, researchers combined self-directed internal speech, described as quiet "mumbling," with a specialized working memory system. Working memory allows the AI to hold and use information temporarily, much like humans do when following instructions or solving math problems. The study showed that AI models using both inner speech and working memory could learn more efficiently, adapt to new situations, and handle multiple tasks at once. These models showed greater flexibility and higher performance compared to those relying on memory alone.
A key goal of this research is to help AI generalize skills, meaning applying learned rules to new situations rather than just memorizing examples. While humans easily switch tasks and solve unfamiliar problems, AI often struggles with these challenges. By blending knowledge from neuroscience, psychology, and machine learning, the team developed a system that encourages the AI to talk to itself a specific number of times. This approach led to significant improvements, especially in complex tasks requiring many steps or multitasking.
Another advantage of this combined system is its ability to work with sparse data, unlike traditional models that need huge datasets. This makes it a lightweight and practical alternative for real-world applications. The researchers now plan to test their AI in noisy, dynamic environments similar to everyday life. They believe that understanding inner speech can provide new insights into human biology and behavior while helping develop robots that can function effectively in our complex world.
Ultimately, this research bridges the gap between human learning and machine intelligence. By mimicking the way humans use internal dialogue to process information, AI can become smarter and more adaptable. As Dr. Jeffrey Queißer, the lead researcher, explains, exploring phenomena like inner speech helps us understand fundamental mechanisms of learning. This knowledge can be applied to create household or agricultural robots capable of handling real-life challenges, marking a significant step forward in the future of AI technology.
32.What is the main benefit of adding "inner speech" to AI systems according to the text?
A. It reduces the need for any memory structure.
B. It enables AI to mimic human emotions perfectly.
C. It improves efficiency and adaptability in tasks.
D. It allows AI to replace human workers completely.
33.Why do researchers combine neuroscience and psychology with machine learning?
A. To make AI systems look more like human beings.
B. To help AI solve unfamiliar problems more effectively.
C. To reduce the cost of building robot hardware.
D. To stop AI from making any mistakes in calculations.
34.What can be inferred about the new AI system compared to traditional models?
A. It requires larger datasets to achieve good results.
B. It performs worse in complex and noisy environments.
C. It relies solely on long-term memory for storage.
D. It can function well with limited amounts of data.
35.What is the researchers' ultimate goal for this technology?
A. To prove that machines can feel emotions like humans.
B. To create robots that can operate in real-world conditions.
C. To eliminate the need for human supervision in all fields.
D. To focus only on theoretical studies without practical use.
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Ever feel like there’s never enough time these days? Chased by deadlines and bombarded with (狂轰滥炸) social media content, we feel that each day is full. 36
The idea of “time poverty” is not new. First introduced in 1977, it has attracted much attention over the decades, according to Forbes. Cassie Holmes, a US social psychologist, tracked the time data of tens of thousands of people and found that when people have less than two hours of free time each day, their life satisfaction drops. 37
We live in a world that values productivity. People are expected to be efficient, take on different roles and deal with many tasks. This can lead to a lack of personal time, hurting the individual’s well-being. 38 A University of Chicago study found that over the past decade, people’s participation in community activities had dropped by 58 percent, and the chance of neighbors knowing each other had fallen from 75 percent in the 1980s to only 22 percent in 2022.
39 Holmes pointed out that when people have over five hours of free time a day, they may start to feel a loss of purpose and achievement. Those who have two to five hours of free time each day report the highest levels of happiness and satisfaction.
Time is a resource that is equally shared among all people. The key lies not in how much time we have, but in how we use it. 40 Exercising or volunteering can help you make the most of your time and give you a sense of achievement.
A.Make a strict schedule for everyday activities.
B.It can also cause a crisis in social relationships.
C.You should reduce workload and social arrangements.
D.They may even start to experience feelings such as anxiety and burnout.
E.However, when we stop to think about our day, we might feel a bit empty.
F.Despite these facts, more free time does not necessarily mean greater happiness.
G.If you ever feel short on time, try making small changes to find some “me time”.

However, when I got back from that job interview, I made the first step toward dealing with life with a disability — 46 . For the first time, I 48 my official diagnosis (诊断) — visual disability. To my surprise, I was filled with 49 .

Today, I’m much more confident than ever. Though my vision can’t be changed, I treat every 53 as a new challenge. I speak up when something isn’t 54 and ask for adjustments. If I feel shy about my vision, how will over two million people in Britain with sight loss 55 ? I’m not just speaking up for myself but for the millions like me.

I’ve been very fond of classical music since I was a kid. The soft piano melody or grand symphony always calms me after a stressful school week. My best friend Tom is totally different, he’s a big rock music fan, with loud electric guitars and heavy drums following him everywhere.
We’d never argued about music tastes before, but last Friday evening, things got heated. We sat on the neighborhood park lawn, passing headphones back and forth. After Tom listened to my favorite Chopin nocturne (肖邦夜曲), he shrugged: “It’s okay, but way too slow, where’s the energy?” I frowned, grabbing the headphones back. “Energy? Your rock music is just noise! Singers shout like they’re in pain, and instruments hurt my ears,” I said sharply. Tom’s eyes widened, leaning forward with a raised voice: “You don’t get it! Rock is passion, saying how you feel freely! You’re stuck in an old-fashioned circle, scared to try new things!”
Angry, my cheeks burned. “Old-fashioned? Classical music has real artistry, not just screaming and hitting”! I stood up, kicking a stone hard. Tom jumped up too, fists clenched: “How dare you respect what I love? You’re my best friend, I thought you’d understand”! Before I could reply, he turned and stormed off (愤然离开), backpack swinging. I yelled after him: “Fine! Don’t talk to me if you’re unreasonable”! But as he disappeared around the corner, a twinge of regret flashed. I quickly pushed it away, still angry.
For three days, we didn’t speak. We passed in the school hallway without a glance, and group chats went silent. I missed our jokes and after-school walks, but was unwilling to apologize. Deep down, I knew I’d gone too far.

D

67.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

For this year's science fair, I created a new project. My project focused on solar power and how it can be used in daily life, because I am very interested in finding ways to use clean and environmentally friendly power. To study that, I built a small solar-powered car and tested its performance compared to a regular battery-powered car. Then, I tested both cars in different weather conditions to see how well they worked. After several tests, I found that the solar car was able to run for longer periods when it was sunny, but the battery-powered car was more reliable on cloudy days. Through this project, I learned a lot about the importance of clean energy and got inspired to continue exploring clean energy solutions in the future.

【答案】24.D 25.A 26.B 27.C

根据第二段第二句“However, this comes with a cost: attention drops sharply during these moments.”以及第三段引用的Laura Lewis的话“attention fails during the moments that you have this wave of fluid flow”可知,当脑脊液波在清醒时出现,代价是注意力会急剧下降。选项B“Attention temporarily fails as the brain cleans itself”(当大脑自我清洗时,注意力暂时失效)符合文意。选项A、B、C均与文中描述的生理反应(心率减慢、注意力下降)不符。
29.推理判断题。根据第四段第二句“Pupil constriction began roughly 12 seconds before CSF moved out of the brain...”可知,瞳孔收缩发生在脑脊液流出(即注意力失效)之前约12秒。由此可推断,瞳孔变小可能是注意力即将涣散的一个信号。选项C“Smaller pupils may signal an upcoming lapse in focus”符合这一逻辑推理。选项A与文意相反;选项B时间顺序错误;选项D与文中描述的变化不符。
30.推理判断题。文章第三段提到研究人员让志愿者在“after a night of sleep deprivation”和“after being well-rested”两种情况下完成任务,并在第四段指出“As expected, sleep-deprived participants performed significantly worse than when they were well-rested.”。这种对比实验的目的是为了观察和比较在休息充足和睡眠不足两种不同条件下,大脑和身体的反应差异,从而得出脑脊液流动与注意力关系的结论。故选D。
31.细节理解题。根据文章最后一段“This system, which uses the neurotransmitter norepinephrine to regulate cognition and bodily functions...”以及倒数第二段提到的“a single control system may coordinate both attention and basic bodily functions”,可知去甲肾上腺素能系统(noradrenergic system)被怀疑是协调警觉性(attention/alertness)和生理过程(如脑脊液流动、心率等)的关键系统。选项C准确概括了这一功能。选项A、B、D在文中均未提及或表述错误。
D
根据第二段中 "The study showed that AI models using both inner speech and working memory could learn more efficiently, adapt to new situations, and handle multiple tasks at once."
根据第三段中 "While humans easily switch tasks and solve unfamiliar problems, AI often struggles with these challenges.

【参考范文】

To study that, I built a small solar powered car and tested its performance compared to a regular battery powered car. Then I tested both cars in different weather conditions to see how well they walked. After several tests, I found that the solar car was able to run for longer periods when I was Sunny, but the battery powered car was more reliable on cloudy days.
