阅读下面短文,用英语回答短文后的问题(每题回答字数不超过10个词)。
I am Black Beauty. Now I’m in my new home. And I’m happy with this. Everyone here is kind and everything is OK. I have a nice stable and the best of food. But I’m not happy—I miss my freedom (自由). For three and a half years, I am completely free. Now I have to stay in the stable most of the time, wearing straps, a bit, and blinkers. I’m not saying it is bad, but for a young horse like me, it is hard.
Sometimes, when I cannot keep quiet, I jump and dance in front of my groom (马夫) John, giving him a good shake. But John is always patient. “Calm down, boy,” he’d say. Then when we leave the village, he lets me run fast for a few miles. This helps me feel calm. Some other grooms get angry at this, but John knows I am just playing. He uses his voice to guide me. I can tell by his voice when he is serious. I listen to him because I like him.
We have a few hours of freedom. This usually happens on sunny Sundays when the master doesn’t need the carriage (马车). It is a good time to go to the field. The grass is cool and soft, the air is sweet and the feeling of freedom is wonderful. We can run fast, lie down, roll, or enjoy grass. It is also a good time to talk, as we stand together under a large chestnut tree.

Have you heard of Peter Pan? Peter Pan was a magic character. He first appeared in Wendy Darling’s room and searched for his lost shadow (影子). And Peter Pan has been very famous around the world ever since. The story was created by J. M. Barrie. Do you know how J. M. Barrie created it?
J. M. Barrie was born in Scotland in 1860. He moved to London and became a writer in 1885. Twelve years later, he became friends with Sylvia Davies and her five sons. He enjoyed telling the boys stories and made up the character of Peter Pan to bring them pleasure.
He said Peter Pan was based on all the boys, telling them, “That is all Peter is—the spark (创作灵感) I got from you.” A play about Peter Pan was written and shown in December 1904. It was a great success. In 1911, J. M. Barrie wrote a book, Peter and Wendy. The book has been popular since it was printed for the first time. J. M. Barrie invented the name “Wendy”, based on “Fwendy”, the name that he was given as a child. The name “Fwendy” was based on the word “friend”.
Wendy met Peter Pan on a special night. Peter Pan taught Wendy, John, and Michael Darling to fly and took them to Neverland. They had many adventures there. The adventures are exciting and full of fun. The most wonderful part is “The fight between Peter Pan and Captain Hook”. In this fight, children showed their courage, wisdom and many excellent qualities. But after a while, Wendy started to miss her home and parents. Finally, Peter helped the children return home safely, though he himself decides to stay in Neverland forever.

White Fang, the wolf cub (幼兽), was different from his brothers and sisters. They had reddish hair like their mother, the she-wolf, but he was grey like his father, One Eye.
When his eyes were still closed, the grey cub knew his family by touch, taste, and smell. He spent much time sleeping in most of his first month, but as he grew, he stayed awake longer and he knew his small world. His world was the dark cave and nothing else.
Soon he noticed one place was different—it was the mouth of the cave, where the light came in. The light attracted him. He always wanted to walk toward it, but his mother always hit him and drove him back. From this, the grey cub learned more about his mother. And he knew what hurt was.
As time went by, the grey cub knew hunger. His mother’s milk was gone. He and his brothers and sisters grew weak and had to sleep while their father and mother were trying their best to hunt. Finally, when the grey cub woke up again, he found only one sister left. Soon, she died too.
Later, after another time of hunger, his father stopped returning. The she-wolf followed his father’s path and saw signs of a great fight at the home of a lynx (猞猁). She knew One Eye lost there. After that, she stayed away from that area when hunting, for she knew the lynx also had babies and would fight hard to protect them.
But the wild is the wild, and a mother will do anything for her young. The time would come when the she-wolf would go near the lynx’s home for her grey cub again.

With the help of Mary, his own cousin, Tom Sawyer became a different person. It was the first time for Tom Sawyer to dress up.
Then, they went to the Sunday school. Tom Sawyer hated it because of the long school hours and church service. When the children came to the gate of the school, Tom Sawyer walked more slowly and asked another boy, “Bill, have you got a yellow ticket?” After they bargained (讨价还价) for a while, they reached a deal. Tom gave him a fishing hook and he got the yellow ticket from Bill. In the same way, he exchanged for some red tickets and some blue tickets.
In this school, the teacher had set a rule to encourage the children to recite (背诵) the Bible: if he could recite two verses, the teacher would give him one blue ticket; ten blue tickets were equal to one red ticket; ten red tickets could be exchanged for a yellow ticket; if anyone could get ten yellow tickets, the teacher would give him or her a new Bible—the greatest honor for the children. So many children were busy reciting every day. So he thought of an easy way. He exchanged his small things for tickets in other children’s hands.
In class, Tom Sawyer was playing with the boys around and the children began to talk noisily and even began to fight. Suddenly, the room turned silent because an old man—somebody important came into the room. Then it was the time to give prize to those children who had gotten ten yellow tickets.
Nobody had enough tickets. When hope was dead, Tom Sawyer stood up with nine yellow tickets, nine red ones and ten blue ones. All the children looked at him with eagerness (渴望). Tom, Huck and Joe decided to run away from the town and become pirates (海盗), never to return. They left at midnight on a raft (筏) and finally landed on an island five kilometers south of their town. They took the old sail from the raft and made a tent. Then they let the raft go down the river.
They built a fire and cooked some stolen food to eat, talking about the life of pirates.
Slowly, they felt sleepy. Huck slept easily. Tom and Joe had more difficulty getting to sleep. Their consciences (良心) started to work. They began to fear that it was wrong to run away and worried that it was bad to steal.
After they woke up the next morning, they played in the shallow, clear water. Then they caught some small fish and cooked these for breakfast.
Later they went to explore the woods. When they got hungry, they went back to their camp, ate lots of cold ham, and then lay down in the shade to talk. They thought the new life was free and interesting.
Suddenly, the boys heard a strange noise in the distance. Soon this sound became louder.
“What is it?” asked Joe.
“It isn’t thunder,” said Huck. “Let’s go and see.”
They hurried to the shore (岸). A little ferry (渡船) full of people was about a kilometer below the village. There were lots of rowing boats moving around near the ferry. The boys couldn’t understand what they were doing. Some white steam (蒸汽) came from the ferry’s side and they heard that same sound again.
“I know,” cried Tom. “Someone’s drowned (溺死)! They are searching for the dead body.”
“That’s it,” said Huck. “They did this last summer when Bill Turner drowned. They send out some white steam over the water and that makes the body come to the top.”

Another rich man in Venice was Shylock. He became rich by lending money to others and making them pay interest (利息). While Antonio thought it wrong to make people pay interest. He said the rich should help the poor. Shylock was very angry about this because many people went to borrow money from Antonio instead of borrowing from him. This meant that Shylock earned less money.
When Bassanio visited Shylock, he asked Shylock to lend him three thousand gold coins and said he would pay it back in three months. “How do I know you can pay it back?” asked Shylock. “My friend Antonio will help me. If I do not pay you in three months, he will do it for me,” Bassanio said. Shylock turned to smile. Perhaps this would be a chance.
So Shylock went to visit Antonio at once. When seeing him, Shylock couldn’t help thinking how much he hated him. However, he did not show his hatred. He tried to be friendly. “It’s three thousand gold coins for three months, isn’t it?” Antonio and Bassanio agreed. “What interest will you pay?” Shylock asked. Before long, Antonio and Shylock were arguing about interest. Antonio called Shylock some bad names. Bassanio was worried and stopped Antonio.
Antonio said sorry to Shylock. “If you lend us this money,” pleaded Antonio, “I will not call you bad names.”
Shylock pretended to be surprised. “Come with me to the judge,” said Shylock, “so that he can write the contract. I will lend you the money for three months. You will pay no interest. Just for fun, however, let’s agree that if you do not pay me on time, you will give me one pound of your flesh from wherever I choose to take it!”

Cassy made a plan for her and Emmeline to escape. Their master Legree’s house had an attic (阁楼). The slaves as well as Legree believed there were ghosts in the attic, so they were all afraid to go there. Cassy’s room was under the attic. One day she moved out of her room.
When Legree asked why, she replied, “I can’t sleep.”
“Why not?”
“Oh nothing! Just the noises in the attic, from midnight until morning.”
“Noises?” said Legree, apprehensive, “Who is up there?”
“I don’t know.” Cassy said and went away.
Then she put things in the attic that made strange noises when the wind blew. The slaves heard and started talking about ghosts, daring not to get close to the attic.
Then one night Cassy and Emmeline ran away. To avoid Legree’s dogs, they first stayed near the house and waited. When Legree took the dogs to find the two women, Cassy and Emmeline hid in the attic.
Legree was very angry when he returned. Legree was sure Tom knew where Cassy and Emmeline were. But when Tom arrived, he refused to tell Legree what he knew. Legree hit and kicked Tom again and again until he thought Tom was dead. Then he left.
But Tom was not dead. Legree’s helpers Sambo and Quimbo felt sorry and tried to help him.
Cassy and Emmeline stayed in the attic for days. Then one night they escaped again without being followed. They were free!
Two days later, Tom’s first master, Mr. Shelby came and finally met Tom. He told Tom when he received the letter from Miss Ophelia, who was Tom’s last master and wanted George to send money to buy Tom back, he kept looking for Tom. But it took him a long time.

The winter is very cold and wet. The cab (马车) drivers try to keep warm with hot soup.
Little Dolly likes to bring soup to Jerry. One cold day, a customer arrives. Jerry gives his soup to Polly.
“Where to?” Jerry asks the man.
“Finish your soup first, driver,” the man says, “You are cold and need something warm inside you.”
Jerry says, “Thank you, sir.” Then he says to Dolly, “Here is a good man. He does not think only of himself.”
Most customers do not care about the health of the carters (马车夫) or horses. But this nice customer cares. His name is Mr. Grant.
One day, Mr. Grant and his friend are in our cab. He sees a carter whipping his horse. He shouts at the carter to stop. The name of the carter’s employer is on the side of the cart. Jerry writes down the name of the carter’s employer.
Mr. Grant’s friend says, “This is none of our business. Why worry about other men’s horses?”
“Do you know why there are so many problems in the world?” Mr. Grant asks his friend.
His friend does not answer.
“It’s because too many people look after only their own business,” Mr. Grant says.

Then, the children understood that they were all cheated by Tom Sawyer. The teacher didn’t believe Tom Sawyer could get so many tickets, but the number of tickets was exact.

“I wonder who drowned,” said Huck.
“It is us,” said Tom.

Just for fun, however, let’s agree that if you do not pay me on time, you will give me one pound of your flesh from wherever I choose to take it!”
