On a hot summer afternoon, Mike heard Jim and Jack said they were going for a swim in the river. After school, Mike chatted with them at a neighborhood shop, and knew that they didn’t know how to swim but they wanted to have a try. Then he followed them down to the river and asked them not to go in. But they didn’t listen to him and jumped into the river. Soon the water took them away.
Without thinking twice, Mike jumped into a nearby boat and then paddled (划) with his own hands to reach the two boys. First, Mike got Jim with one hand and left him lying on the boat. Then, he paddled to Jack and jumped into the water to take him back. He said, “It was hard, but go his arms on one side of the boat just like teachers taught us at school.”
When the policeman got to the river, Mike just took the two boys to the ground. The policeman thanked him and asked, “Why did you want to save them alone? Its dangerous for a child like you to do so.” Mike said, “To become a lifeguard (救生员) is my dream. But my parents dissent from me. They think I am not strong enough for the job, and it is dangerous to work as a lifeguard.”
At last, the policeman said, “You are a young hero! It’s nice of a child to have a big dream. But it is also important to know that one should protect himself first. News is all around us. People get news from almost everywhere. According to a recent study, 60% of people read news on their smartphones, while 30% watch news on TV. 40% of them read news at least once an hour, and 20% read newspapers every morning. Young people like to share and talk about news on social media (社交媒体). It’s normal to feel a little upset when you see stories that seem worrying. There are things you can do to help with your feelings.
It’s fun to learn about good stories, but bad news happens too. For example, reports about climate change (气候变化) can make you feel upset. “Bad news isn’t nice to hear,” says Dr Aaron Balick. “It is normal to feel worried about these things.” Studies also show that we remember bad news stories more easily and clearly. This is called “negative bias” and scientists say people have it because it’s a very old way to keep us safe and away from danger.
If you’re worried about a story you’ve seen on social media, for example, ask your parents or teachers to help you find out if it’s true. Another way to deal with bad news is to put your worry into action. If you find stories about climate change upset, believe that you can help. Everyone can do something to make our world a better place. Also, “don’t keep your feelings to yourself”, says Balick. Talk to someone you trust, because this may help you understand where your feelings come from and why you feel this way.
( )1. How does the writer lead into the topic in paragraph 1?
A. By telling a story. B. By asking a question.
C. By using numbers. D. By giving an example.
( )2. Why do people have “negative bias” according to scientists?
A. Because bad news happens more often. B. Because bad news reports keep us upset.
C. Because people always want to keep safe. D. Because people like to read good news.
( )3. What can you do when you are worried about some news according to the text?
A. Keep feelings to yourself. B. Ask your parents for help.
C. Write to the newspaper. D. Listen to good stories only.
( )4. Which is the best title for the text?
A. How to help with climate change. B. How to deal with bad news.
C. What to read to young children. D. Where to find useful news.

When you are busy with schoolwork and making friends, do you want to be babies again?Maybe you think they don't care about anyone or anything, but a study says this may not be true.
Two-year-old babies care about the ways others see them. They even try to make themselves look good when others are around them, found by the scientists (科学家) from Emory University in the US.
Scientists did tests(测试) on 144 babies between 14 and 24 months old. They showed the babies a robot with two toys in its hands. When the babies reached the toys in different hands, the scientists gave them different replies(回复). If the babies tried to reach the toy in the left hand, the scientists would act (行动) happily and smile at them. But if the babies picked the toy in the right hand, the scientists would be unhappy and even cry.
They found that when there were no adults (成人) around, children would reach the toy in the right hand more often. But when adults were watching, they would try to reach the toy in the left hand.
Older children and adults show the same kind of action(行为). When others are watching, they would like to make themselves act well. "When no one is paying attention (关注),they act badly", Sara Valencia Botto, one of the scientists from the study, told the Telegraph.
All the studies before found that children started to care about what others thought of them around 4 years old. But this new study shows that the age is earlier. "It shows that 2-year-old children will change their actions to get a better reply", Botto said.
