I was walking home when a well-dressed man politely stopped me. “Could you tell me which way to Bloor and…” He struggled to get the next word out with a pained look, but I knew better than to finish his sentence for him. “… Bathurst?” he said after several seconds of trying. When I answered, he told me that he didn’t actually need to know. He was practising stuttering (口吃) openly, he explained, hoping to become more confident doing so around strangers.
“Are you doing that because it’s National Stuttering Awareness Day?” I asked with excitement, eager to connect with other stutterers. When he asked how I knew that, I said I grew up with a stutter. He nodded, asking hopefully: “So your stutter has magically disappeared?” I paused. I understood why he assumed this — I sounded quite fluent. But even as we spoke, my stutter had influenced my speech, and that’s why I’d misnamed International as National to avoid the tricky front sound that I continue to struggle with.
Data shows four percent of all children stutter, while only one percent of them stutter into adulthood — a 75 percent drop. But are the supposed ex-stutters completely free of their stuttering past? Actually, though the severity of my stutter has decreased with age, it has shaped my identity and affected my life tremendously, informing the way that I speak, interact and move around in the world.
Some define stutter as a disability because it is as constant and out of control as blindness or other disabilities. There’s no pill, no surgery, no way to get rid of it, no “recovering” from it. But there is recovering from the shame and self-hatred that result from it. Some researchers have begun to argue that treatment for stutter shouldn’t be centered around removing a person’s stutter, but rather on reducing one’s negative thoughts and behaviors surrounding it.
As for me, I’d say that my stutter has not “magically disappeared” because I’ve simply found ways to conceal (隐藏) it. But I have a better therapy now — I will grow alongside it, an identity inseparable from the way that I speak. In George Orwell’s novel 1984, “Newspeak” was a simplified language designed to limit citizens’ critical thinking. In today’s digital reality, a linguistic phenomenon known as “algospeak” is growing widespread across the internet. It’s an attempt to bypass social media platforms’ language restrictions.
According to linguist Adam Aleksic, users are increasingly coining new terms to prevent their content from being marked or removed for containing harmful, offensive or inappropriate language. For example, in many online videos, it’s common to say “unalived” instead of “killed.” Guns are often referred to as “pew pews.”
The term “algospeak” rose to prominence in 2022. It now serves as the title of Aleksic’s new book, Algospeak: How Social Media Is Transforming the Future of Language. In it, he explores the power of algorithms (算法) to increase a word’s use or remove it completely. “The fact that the algorithm censors (审查) the word ‘ kill’ forces users to invent new language,” Aleksic explained.
He pointed out that social media is changing language in other ways as well — much like how abbreviations (缩略词) such as “lol” (laugh out loud) originated in texting but are now spoken aloud. Today, young people frequently adopt phrases from memes (网络梗) and integrate them into everyday conversation.
“I think language always reflexively (条件反射地) adapts to each medium.” Aleksic said. “I felt my own language reroute around the algorithm. However, the more I looked into it, the more I realized this is an infrastructure (基础结构) underlying all language change happening right now. It’s changing where words come from, how words get popular, and how quickly those words spread.”
In a recent article for The Washington Post, Aleksic wrote about the migration of sports metaphors (隐喻) into gaming culture. Terms like “home run” and “strike out,” borrowed from baseball, are commonly used by gamers.
“America’s pastime once provided an important shared experience from which we could abstract our metaphors. Now America has a new pastime,” he remarked.
As examples, Aleksic described young people labeling themselves as the “main characters,” compared with strangers as “NPCs” (non-playable characters). A “side quest” refers to an activity that is not part of a plan.
Despite the constant flow of new slang (俚语), Aleksic noted that not all of it endures. Terms like “bae” and “on fleek”, popularized on the now-defunct (停业的) platform Vine, have largely gone out of use.

Technology is supposed to simplify our lives. Smartphones provide a palm-sized window on the world, enabling us to do almost anything with a mere tap. Smart homes manage themselves, and virtual meetings mean that commuting (通勤) is a thing of the past for many. So, we should have more time to sleep, relax, or simply enjoy a moment of doing nothing, right?
If this idea strikes you as a bit of a paradox, you are not alone. Growing evidence suggests that while digital technology indeed helps us save some time, we often end up using that time to do more things.
We recently conducted interviews across Europe to understand how people use digital devices in their daily lives. Whether it was waiting for a bus, waking up in the morning, or lying in bed at night, our respondents reported that time that would have previously been “empty” was now filled with tech-driven tasks.
The growth in digital tasks is partly due to how technology is changing our perception of free time. For many, it is no longer enough to simply eat a meal, watch TV, or take an exercise class. Instead, in an attempt to avoid “wasting” time, they often do these activities while browsing the Web in search of the ingredients for a perfect life and a sense of achievement.
These changes are also thought to be intensifying work. Home and hybrid working enabled by video conferencing technology, have blurred the boundaries between work time and personal time. With the office now just a room away, it is tempting to think, “I’ll just finish this up after putting the kids to bed.”
Digital technologies are speeding up the pace of life. However, poorly designed technology can also force us to do more work because of the inefficiencies it creates. We have all encountered the frustration of entering data into system A only to find that it does not integrate with system B, forcing us to re-enter the same information in both.
By adding more tasks to our plates, we may end up achieving less and feeling worse. Reclaiming the time “saved” by technology requires a shift in how we use our time. To break free of the habit of filling time with more and more tasks, we need to first accept that sometimes it is okay to do less or nothing at all.
In the work environment employers and employees alike need to create an environment in which disconnection is acceptable. This means setting realistic expectations about what can be achieved in a typical workday.
Moreover, technology itself may hold the key to reclaiming our time. Imagine if, instead of telling you to stand up and move around for another task, your smartwatch reminded you to stop working because you had reached your contracted work hours. Perhaps when technology starts to tell us to do less, we will finally be able to regain control of our time.

An intern (实习生) for a German company in Beijing, Ye is among thousands of youth interested in city adventures, what they call “urban exploration” — “urbex” for short.
The aim of this trending hobby is to explore man-made structures — usually abandoned ruins or hidden areas. Urban explorers are interested in these sites because they can understand cities from a different angle. Ye, for example, said he enjoyed the contrast between Beijing’s two sides.
“Widely known scenic spots and historical sites can only reflect the bright side of the city, or what the city wants you to see,” Ye said. “But abandoned places show you the past that is hidden deep in people’s memories.”
Alex, who is in his early 30s and works in Canada, once explored a sealed 1920s theater. With careful planning, he entered through a basement window. Inside, time stood still: a grand piano sat on stage and old posters still hung on walls. He spent hours photographing, careful not to disturb anything. For urbexers, there is a very important rule that you can’t remove any souvenirs from a site.
While urban exploration can get people to extraordinary places that few have visited, it’s sometimes dangerous. Climbing up tall buildings and tip-toeing through abandoned structures can sometimes be a life-threatening affair. Injuries and even death are not unheard of within the urbex community.
“In the beginning, I was pretty audacious and believed the riskier the places you go, the better photos you get,” said Du Tianyu, 22. “But that is not necessarily the case. After doing my calculations, I learned to stop when I reach the limit.”
At its best urbex is a bridge between the past and present. It captures the beauty of forgotten places while preserving them for others to discover.
