Eighteen miles into the walk, both of my legs screamed. I was a few months into training for a 30-mile walking challenge to celebrate the final year of my Ph. D., and now my carefully laid plans seemed on shaky ground. The setback came on top of bad news on another front: my job hunt. I applied to positions broadly, confident I would land something soon. But the rejections started to roll in. In both cases I would soon have to make a choice: Should I stay the course, or adjust my plans?
Looking for a way to take my mind off the stresses of finishing my Ph. D. and the job search, I decided to organize a 30-mile walking challenge. I’d ease the burden of long hours working on thesis chapters and job applications by being out in the countryside, among the members of the walking group I had joined a year ago. Soon, though, I was finding I had less time to train. I pushed myself harder than I should have, setting the stage for my leg injury.
My professional prospects weren’t looking any better. And my injury only worsened my mood. For months I stuck doggedly to my previously laid plans — but maybe it was time to try a new path.
I previously considered government jobs but had been discouraged by the complicated application process, very different from that at private companies. But the employment policies seemed friendly toward those undertaking career transitions, and the work seemed in line with my career goals. I decided to give it a try, learning new vocabulary s to explain how my academic experience qualified me for the jobs — and was excited to get interviews, and eventually offers, for two different positions. The weight I had felt for months finally lifted.
At the same time, I was still struggling with my walk plans. With the stress of my job search behind me, I learned I could find satisfaction by revising my goal: a shortened walk of 14 miles, a distance I could manage comfortably.
One month later, I successfully defended my thesis and started my new job.

Climate change leads to rising temperatures, increased sea levels, and drought (干旱). However, its effects don’t end there — it can also change the taste of food.
In southwest Spain, black Iberian pigs look for food under centuries-old oak trees, a process key for the unique taste of the Jamon Iberico, a special cured ham (腌制火腿) made from these pigs. However, according to National Geographic, more heat waves and a five-year drought have reduced the number of the trees’ acorns (橡子) as well as the grass around them. Without these natural food sources, the pigs require extra feed, which changes the ham’s unique taste.
Drought also affects the taste of fruits. Watermelons, for example, show significant flavor changes during drought conditions. According to researchers at the Agrifood Research and Technology Center of Aragon in Spain, compounds (化合物) such as sugars build up during drought, changing the taste of food, either for better or for worse.
Beyond drought, rising temperatures and sea levels also influence food flavors. Warm days and cool nights help fruits develop the best flavor by increasing their sugar content and acidity (酸度). However, global warming is changing this. For example, Japanese apples are becoming less acidic, softer, and drier because they bloom early and grow in higher temperatures. Oysters, which do best in a mix of salt and freshwater, are losing their unique taste because rising sea levels are making their environment too salty.
While the food we eat is affected by climate change, our food choices also impact the climate. Meat and milk products, especially from cows, contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. Raising animals for food makes up about 14.5 percent of the world’s total greenhouse gas emissions, similar to the emissions from all vehicles combined. Producing animal protein (蛋白质) uses more land, energy and water than plant protein.
While this seems like a bad cycle, it can be broken. For example, The Good Food Institute, a US-based think tank, believes people will choose alternative proteins if they are as tasty and affordable as meat. Meanwhile, more farmers are practicing “greener” farming, and when people buy local, in-season produce, the impact on the environment is reduced.
8. What has caused the change in the flavor of Jamon Iberico?
A. The change in pig feeding methods due to new technology.
B. The introduction of new curing techniques.
C. The lack of natural feed for the pigs.
D. The use of other meat sources.
9. What does paragraph 5 mainly talk about?
A. The choices we make about food influence the environment.
B. The comparison between plant and animal proteins.
C. The rising carbon footprint of food production.
D. The effects of farming on global warming.
10. What action can consumers take to fight climate change?
A. Eating less processed food. B. Buying local and in-season food.
C. Supporting traditional farming practices. D. Choosing animal protein over plant protein.
11. What’s the best title for this passage?
A. Shifts in Sea Levels B. Changes on Your Plate
C. Droughts and Agriculture D. Greenhouse Gas Emissions
D
Toys on children’s holiday wish lists may contain more surprises than usual this year as children open presents that can talk with their owners. Toymakers have declared 2025 the year of artificial intelligence (AI) and are producing robots and teddies that can teach, play and tell stories.
AI is reshaping childhood. Children can listen to songs composed about themselves, read stories in which they star, play video games that adapt to their skill level and have a chatbot friend cheering them on.
Being brought up by robots has advantages. Tech firms are already showing how AI can make learning more effective, especially where teachers and materials are rare. The ability to read and write and language-learning have been boosted in early trials. The dream is that, with an AI tutor, children can be freed from classes designed for the average level, in which bright pupils are bored and dim ones are lost. If you want a version (版本)of this leader for an eight-year-old Hindi-speaker, AI can rewrite it; if they would prefer it as a cartoon book or a song, no problem.
However, it is obviously risky to let children use this developing technology as they like. AI tutors may give wrong answers. Toys can go off the rails (轨道). Children can easily misuse AI, to cheat at homework. Besides, one-sided relationships with chatbots also present a risk. AI companions that never criticize, nor share feelings of their own, are a poor preparation for dealing with imperfect humans. A third of American teenagers say they find chatting with an AI companion at least as satisfying as talking to a friend, and easier than talking to their parents. Yes-bots threaten to create children not used to taking turns, who grow up into colleagues unable to compromise (妥协)or partner with others. This is the long-term challenge.
Some basic counter-measures are urgent. Parents should think twice before entrusting their child to a machine. Chatbots should have clear age rules that are properly carried out; governments should not give AI firms more freedom. They should redouble efforts to teach things that a robot can’t: to debate, to disagree and to get along with others — perhaps even to appreciate life.
12. What surprise may be found in 2025?
A. An interactive toy. B. A funny video game.
C. A well-composed song. D. A story-writing machine.
13. What does the underlined word “dim” probably mean in paragraph 3?
A. Lacking in flexibility. B. Slow in learning.
C. Depressed in mood. D. Interested in cartoons.
14. What is the long-term challenge that AI brings according to the text?
A. AI tutors give wrong answers. B. Children cheat with AI’s help.
C. Toys go off the rails easily. D. Children lose interpersonal skills.
15. What is the author’s attitude toward AI chatbots?
A. Opposed. B. Supportive. C. Objective. D. Indifferent.

Many people think that positive thinking is mostly about keeping one's head in the sand and ignoring daily problems, trying to look optimistic. In reality it has more to do with the way an individual talks to himself. Self-talk is a constant stream of thoughts of a person, who is often unaware and uncertain of some events, phenomena, people, or even the person himself.____16____Meanwhile, positive thinking can help to stop negative self-talks and start to form a positive view on an issue. People who regularly practise positive thinking tend to solve problems more effectively. They are less exposed to stress caused by external factors. They tend to believe in themselves and in what they do.
____17____People who think positively demonstrate increased life spans, lower rates of depression and anxiety, better physical and psychological health, reduced risks of death from heart problems. Positive thinking also contributes to one's ability to deal with problems and hardships.____18____For example, researchers have found that in the case of a crisis accompanied by strong emotions, such as a natural disaster, positive thinking can provide a sort of buffer against depression and anxiety. Resilient people who think positively tend to treat every problem as a challenge, a chance for improvement of any kind, or as an opportunity for personal growth. Pessimists, on the contrary, tend to perceive problems as a source of additional stress.____19____
In conclusion, positive thinking is a powerful and effective tool for dealing with hard times and improving the quality of one's life. It doesn't have anything to do with ignorant optimism when an individual refuses to notice a problem.____20____
Thinking in a positive, self-encouraging way brings about many benefits to one's physical and mental health.
A. It doesn't cause any severe emotional discomfort, either.
B. Negative self-talk damages self-confidence and decreases self-respect.
C. It helps one to remain clear-headed and confident in difficult situations.
D. Positive thinking has several beneficial effects on the body and the mind.
E. As thinking changes, an individual's behaviour and habits change as well.
F. They often offer a real alternative to the common and regular way of thinking.
G. They often feel discouraged long before trying to solve the problem, even if small.
