I was eating bhindi roti, my favorite Indian snack, which my mom had packed for me. But feeling embarrassed for having a “smelly” lunch and wanting to fit in, I quietly shut my lunchbox. That day, I went hungry. Most days after that, lunchtime at school felt like a battle. If I wasn’t trying to hide my lunch or sneak quick bites when no one was looking, I’d insist on bringing in the same peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwich as the other kids. My mom, who didn’t grow up eating American food, tried her best, but the sandwiches never looked, or tasted, as good as the food I devoured (吃) at home. I didn’t know that I wasn’t alone. Many kids with immigrant parents encounter (遭遇) what’s known as “the lunchbox moment” at school: The experience of being judged for bringing in food considered culturally different and so being made to feel like an outsider. For this article, I talked with kids who could relate. But they also surprised me: They dealt with “the lunchbox moment” differently than I did. For example, Satya Singh, 6, who takes her mom’s Indian cooking to lunch most days, told me that one day a classmate said that her aloo, or potatoes, looked like poop. Another time, someone said that the dal, or lentils, looked like “throw up”. The next day, Satya brought enough dal to share with her entire class — and they loved it. From then on, she says, “My teacher at school made a rule: Don’t yuck someone’s yum.” Looking back, I wish I’d had the wisdom of Satya and offered my friend a bite of my lunch, or just told her it was delicious — especially because now, as an adult, I see that Indian food is universally loved by my friends. Some even try to cook Indian lentils or chickpeas at home! And when I’m hungry, guess what? I miss my mom’s bhindi roti and her care in making it for me. Food is an expression of culture, tradition, family and love. And that’s something to celebrate, not hide. 4 Why did the author feel like experiencing a battle during lunchtime at school? A. Her lunch was so popular. B. Her mom’s cooking was not delicious. C. She had to hide her Indian food. D. She was always hungry. 5. What can be inferred about the author’s mother? A. She tried hard to meet the author’s need. B. She didn’t understand the author’s feelings. C. She grew up in an American environment. D. She was good at making American food. 6. How did Satya change her classmates’ attitude towards her food? A By asking her teacher for help. B. By showing her anger to them. C. By letting them taste her food. D. By hiding her food from them. 7. What does the author mainly aim to convey? A. Food represents more than itself. B. Kids should bring food from home. C. Indian food is popular among adults. D. Schools should offer more food options. C One person’s rubbish is another person’s literary treasure. In Ankara, Turkey, a group of rubbish collectors couldn’t help but notice a pattern — they kept finding books in the rubbish that they picked up around the city. Sad to see resources that could easily benefit others being thrown away, they came up with an idea. The workers created a library with the books they rescued from being sent to a landfill The rubbish collectors began organizing the books in an underground brick factory. The place, which had long been deserted, was part of government buildings. Thanks to its aged brick front and long hallways, the space turned out to be perfect for a library. Once they sorted the books by type, the workers visited the library before and after their shifts (换班). Then, they began lending out books to their friends and families. As the library became more popular, the rubbish collectors finally opened things up to the public in 2017, and books began to be donated instead of being thrown out. With a collection of over 6,000 books, the library features Turkish literature and story books. It also has a popular kid’s section with comic books and an entire section for scientific research. Ankara has books for people who speak another language, like English and French. Lately, they added a place to relax for readers and chess boards for visitors. The effort has reached beyond Ankara. Not only do the rubbish collectors take pride in the library — something many didn’t have the chance to use when they were young — but village school teachers from all over Turkey are asking for books from this project. 8. What did the rubbish collectors first notice about the books they found in the rubbish? A. They were rare first editions. B. They were all damaged beyond repair. C. They were mostly educational textbooks. D. They could be a valuable resource for others. 9. Where was the library set up? A. In a small village. B. In a deserted school. C. In an underground brick factory. D. In the rubbish collectors’ homes. 10. How do the rubbish collectors feel about their library project? A. Proud. B. Expectant. C. Embarrassed. D. Worried. 11. What’s the purpose of writing the text? A. To emphasize the power of recycling waste. B. To advertise a unique library in Turkey. C. To state some rubbish collectors’ dream to build a library. D. To introduce a library’s birth by changing rubbish into treasure. D France has banned smartphone use in primary and secondary schools since 2018, arguing that it helps children focus, limits social-media use, and reduces cyberbullying. The Netherlands followed in January 2024, and Hungary soon after. Britain is now considering a similar ban. But will such measures improve students’ mental health? The problem is evident. A 2021 report from America’s surgeon general found that between 2009 and 2019, persistent hopelessness among high-school students increased by 40%, while the number considering suicide rose by 36%. Nearly half of mental-health disorders that emerge in adolescence persist into adulthood. Smartphones, often seen as the cause, provide easy access to social media, where comparison, cyberbullying, and addiction are almost everywhere. Yet proving a direct link between smartphone use and declining mental health is tricky. The challenge lies in nuance A smartphone is a tool, used for everything from educational games to doomscrolling (刷负面新闻) on social media. Its effects on well-being depend not only on content but also on the age and developmental stage of the user. Research by Amy Orben at Cambridge suggests that social-media use is particularly harmful during puberty’s (青春期) critical developmental windows — ages 11-13 for girls, and 14-15 for boys. Banning smartphones in schools, however, may not be the solution some expect. A recent Lancet study by Victoria Goodyear found no significant difference in mental well-being between students in schools with strict phone bans and those with relaxed policies. The real issue, researchers argue, is overall screen time, not just school use. To make matters worse, social-media firms refuse to share detailed user data, forcing researchers to rely on simple measures like screen time. Until a clearer picture emerges, policymakers risk presenting solutions without fully identifying the problem. 12. Why is it difficult to prove a link between smartphones and mental health? A. The effects of smartphones vary among users. B. Most students refuse to participate in studies. C. The use of smartphones is not content-based. D. Schools do not track phone usage accurately. 13. Why might banning phones in schools fail to improve mental health? A. Parents would oppose the new regulations. B. Students would switch to using tablets instead. C. Social media use extends beyond school hours. D. Cyberbullying occurs only outside of school. 14. What is the author’s attitude towards the policymakers? A Critical. B. Indifferent. C. Supportive. D. Annoyed. 15. What is the best title of the passage? A. Should Schools Ban Smartphones to Improve Focus and Learning? B. Will Banning Smartphones in Schools Improve Students’ Mental Health? C. Does Too Much Screen Time Harm Students’ Emotional Well-being? D. Are Social Media Platforms the Main Cause of Student Anxiety? Founded in 1965, the Mountain Bothy (小屋) Association (MBA) is a registered charity that maintains “simple shelters in remote country for the use of all who love wild and lonely places”. The rolling green hills, the old-fashioned houses, and the friendly community painted a picture of peaceful beauty. Here, everyone knew each other, and life was simple and sweet. One day, a strange, tall and thin dog appeared in the town. With no collar or signs of ownership, he seemed to have appeared out of nowhere. The dog was friendly and quickly became a lovable nuisance (讨厌鬼), wandering about the town without a care. The townspeople named him Max, and he soon became an unofficial town mascot (吉祥物). He had a trick of showing up in the most unexpected places, causing both amusement and annoyance among the townspeople. Emily, a kind-hearted woman, developed a particular fondness for Max. Despite his disorderly behavior, she couldn’t help but be attracted by the dog’s naughty and funny actions and happy-go-lucky nature. As time passed, an unspoken relationship grew between Emily and Max. The stray dog would often appear at Emily’s doorstep, wagging his tail in greeting. Emily found herself looking forward to these visits, and Max became a treasured part of her daily life. She would share her snacks with him, take him for a walk around the town, and talk to him about her day, as if he could understand every word. One stormy evening, Max didn’t show up at Emily’s house. The weather was severe, and Emily couldn’t help but worry about the stray dog. She decided to brave the storm and look for him. Emily searched high and low, her heart pounding with worry. The streets were deserted, and the storm showed no signs of stopping. Just when she was about to lose hope, she heard a weak whining sound. Following the sound, Emily found Max trapped under a fallen tree. She could see the fear in his eyes, but there was no way she could move the tree by herself. She needed help. Emily rushed back to the town and managed to bring some people together. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ One day, a man claiming to be Max’s owner arrived in the town. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 2024~2025学年春季学期高一年级半期考试英语 注意事项: 1. 1 What will Peter do first? 4. Why did the author feel like experiencing a battle during lunchtime at school? A. Her lunch was so popular. B. Her mom’s cooking was not delicious. C. She had to hide her Indian food. D. She was always hungry. 5. What can be inferred about the author’s mother? A. She tried hard to meet the author’s need. B She didn’t understand the author’s feelings. C. She grew up in an American environment. D. She was good at making American food. 6. How did Satya change her classmates’ attitude towards her food? A. By asking her teacher for help. B. By showing her anger to them. C. By letting them taste her food. D. By hiding her food from them. 7. What does the author mainly aim to convey? A. Food represents more than itself. B. Kids should bring food from home. C. Indian food is popular among adults. D. Schools should offer more food options. C 5. A 6. C 7. 根据第三段“If I wasn’t trying to hide my lunch or sneak quick bites when no one was looking, I’d insist on bringing in the same peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwich as the other kids.(如果我不是在努力藏起午餐,或是趁没人看见时快速吃几口,我就会坚持带和其他孩子一样的花生酱果酱三明治)”可知,作者在午餐时间必须藏起自己的印度食物,所以感觉像在经历一场战斗。 根据第三段“My mom, who didn’t grow up eating American food, tried her best, but the sandwiches never looked, or tasted, as good as the food I devoured (吃) at home.(我妈妈从小没有吃美国食物长大,但她尽了最大努力,只是三明治的外观和味道从来都比不上我在家吃的食物)”可知,作者的妈妈努力满足作者的需求。故选A项。 根据第五段“The next day, Satya brought enough dal to share with her entire class — and they loved it.(第二天,Satya带了足够的小扁豆汤和全班同学分享,他们都很喜欢)”可知,Satya通过让同学们品尝她的食物改变了他们的态度。 根据最后一段“Food is an expression of culture, tradition, family and love. And that’s something to celebrate, not hide.(食物是文化、传统、家庭和爱的表达。这是值得庆祝的,而不是隐藏的)”以及上文内容可知,作者主要想传达食物本身代表着更多意义。故选A项。 C One person’s rubbish is another person’s literary treasure. C In an underground brick factory. 8. D 9. C 10. A 11. Banning smartphones in schools however, may not be the solution some expect. A. Critical. A 13. C 14. A 15. 根据文章第三段中“The challenge lies in nuance (微妙之处). A smartphone is a tool, used for everything from educational games to doomscrolling (刷负面新闻) on social media. Its effects on well-being depend not only on content but also on the age and developmental stage of the user.(挑战在于细微差别。智能手机是一种工具,从教育游戏到社交媒体上的末日卷轴,它被用来做任何事情。它对幸福感的影响不仅取决于内容,还取决于用户的年龄和发展阶段)”可知,智能手机是一种工具,其对健康的影响不仅取决于内容,还取决于用户的年龄和发展阶段,即智能手机的影响因用户而异,所以很难证明智能手机和心理健康之间的联系。故选A项。 根据文章第四段中“A recent Lancet study by Victoria Goodyear found no significant difference in mental well-being between students in schools with strict phone bans and those with relaxed policies. The real issue, researchers argue, is overall screen time, not just school use.( 维多利亚·古德伊尔(Victoria Goodyear)最近在《柳叶刀》上发表的一项研究发现,在严格禁止使用手机的学校和政策宽松的学校,学生的心理健康状况没有显著差异。 故选A项。 根据文章大意以及第一段“France has banned smartphone use in primary and secondary schools since 2018, arguing that it helps children focus, limits social-media use, and reduces cyberbullying. The Netherlands followed in January 2024, and Hungary soon after. Britain is now considering a similar ban. 注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Emily rushed back to the town and managed to bring some people together. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ One day, a man claiming to be Max’s owner arrived in the town. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】参考范文 Emily rushed back to the town and managed to bring some people together. Armed with chainsaws and sheer determination, they braved the storm and headed towards Max. The rescue mission was tense, the outcome uncertain. With a tremendous team effort, they managed to free Max. The dog was scared but thankfully unharmed. As Emily held Max in her arms, relief washing over her, she knew then that Max was no longer just a stray dog. From that day onwards, Max officially became Emily’s dog. He was still the town’s mascot, still a lovable nuisance, but he had found a home, a place where he was loved and cared for. One day, a man claiming to be Max’s owner arrived in the town. He said he had lost Max during a trip and had been searching for him ever since. The town was in uproar, Emily’s heart filled with dread. Emily was torn. She loved Max dearly but knew it was right to return him to his original owner. In a surprising turn of events, the man, seeing Emily and Max’s bond, decided to let Max stay. Emily’s story with Max is a testament to the powerful bond between humans and animals. 词汇激活 行为类 ①席卷:wash over/flood over ②看见:see/catch sight of ③决定:decide to/determine to 情绪类 ①紧张的:tense/stressful ②可爱的:lovable/adorable 【点睛】[高分句型1] As Emily held Max in her arms, relief washing over her, she knew then that Max was no longer just a stray dog.(运用了as引导时间状语从句和that引导宾语从句) [高分句型2] Armed with chainsaws and sheer determination, they braved the storm and headed towards Max.(运用了过去分词作状语) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
