It was my first day of classes at my senior high school. I felt like an ant at that huge school. I found my schedule and placed it next to the map. I had a biology class at 9:30 am in the BISIC building. I looked at my watch. It was 9:05 am, which gave me plenty of time, or so I thought. After walking around for 15 minutes, unable to find my way, I began to get very anxious. Just then a middle-aged woman in a bright purple dress approached (走近) me and asked me if I needed help. “Yes,” I said. “I am looking for the BISIC building.” A smile appeared on the lady’s face. “Oh, don’t worry, that is nearby!” She offered to direct me to my class, and I made it to my first class on time. The strange faces around me brought a sense of loneliness. I didn’t know one person in that great big class. When my last class came to a close, the nervousness of the day finally disappeared. It was finally time to go home. Along my walk, I recollected my classes and activities of the day and the new friends I had made. The comfort of arriving home was the best feeling that day. The day had so many things. All in all, I felt very thankful to have the chance to study in such a great high school. 4. What impressed the author most that morning? A. The online map. B. The friendly teacher. C. The large campus. D. The new classmates. 5. What happened to the author before his biology class? A. He chose the wrong seat in the classroom. B. An interest in biology. C. Complete boredom. D. Great comfort. 7. Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. Learning: a time of happiness. B. Education: the key to success. C. My first day of high school. D. My love of campus life. C In January, an Arizona desert community found itself in a terrible situation: The water was cut off. Rio Verde Foothills is made up of about 2,000 homes. For years, many in the community have depended on water trucked in from the nearby city of Scottsdale, which gets its water from the Colorado River. But the river is drying up. Now some people in Rio Verde Foothills must look after themselves. Arizona has increasingly pumped (用泵抽吸) water from underground, but that provides less than half of what the state needs. Some experts say the solution is to import water from outside of the state. One idea is to build a $5.5 billion desalination (海水淡化) factory on Mexico’s Sea of Cortez. Supporters say this could solve the problem for many years. However, some people see a different future. Imported water could damage the environment. Margaret Wilder is a professor at the University of Arizona, in Tucson. She warns that big projects like this one could be used to support or excuse “much more unsustainable (不可持续的) development in the desert in the future”. Environmentalists say the desalination project would harm the planet in several ways. Some of the salt taken out of the Sea of Cortez might end up back in the ocean, harming wildlife. The pipeline would damage land where people and animals live. And the desalination process would consume lots of energy. This would create greenhouse gases. As more water problems like the one in Rio Verde Foothills crop up, Wilder says she's hopeful that Arizona will understand the risks of never- ending expansion (扩大) into the desert. People in Tucson, Arizona, have found a solution to the city’s water shortage: rainwater. Thousands of households are collecting it and using it for cooking, for drinking, and in their gardens. Government leaders have taken notice. The city now requires publicly built roads to collect stormwater. Tucson also helps residents pay for equipment that collects rainwater for home use. 8. What is the main cause of the water shortage in the Rio Verde Foothills community? A People have been using too much water during their daily life. B. Water from the river that provides it is running low. C. Arizona has stopped pumping underground water. D. The nearby city has cut off its water supply. 9. What’s the Wilder’s attitude to the desalination factory? A. Doubtful. B. Thankful. C. Confident. D. Uninterested. 10. What does the underlined word “consume” in paragraph 3 mean? A. Use. B. Produce. C. Waste. D. Store. 11. What is the government of Tucson doing to solve its problem? A. Inventing new equipment to reuse water. B. Limiting the number of homes that can be built. C. Encouraging people to collect and use rainwater. D. Increasing the amount of water pumped from underground. D The beginning of the 20th century saw more than 100, 000 tigers living in the wild, a number that experienced a huge reduction of about 97% due to factors like illegal hunting and trading habitat (栖息地) loss, shortage of food, human-tiger conflict (冲突) and lack of will to address these factors. Protecting and improving tiger habitats can lead to the protection of thousands of other species as-well as important ecosystem services that benefit (使受益)nations and the people who live in and close to these habitats. Forests in tiger landscapes store almost 3. 5 times more carbon than other forests and offer, protection against floods and other natural disasters. They also attract ecotourism (生态旅游业) and support agriculture by providing fresh water, safeguarding soil and regulating local weather. In 2010, the governments of 13 tiger range countries finally committed to doubling the number or tigers in the wild and have made great efforts since. In 2022, India reported an increase of 619 tigers since 2018, making it the second nation — after Nepal — to double its wild tiger population compared to the 2010 baseline. On July29, 2023, the world celebrated International Tiger Day with good news from Bhutan. Its latest tiger population survey reported 131 more tigers living in the wild, a 27% increase from its first systematic survey in 2015. Bhutan’s achievement is reason to celebrate. But people in Bhutan and other tiger range countries may not necessarily be enthusiastic (热衷的) about the growth in tiger populations. After all, there are challenges ahead such as the possibility of more human-tiger conflicts and reduced Willingness to live alongside large predators Preventing conflict from happening in the first place is an essential first step. Governments and protection organizations can invest (投资) in early warning systems, structures for protection against predators and other measures to prevent human-tiger conflicts. When conflicts do occur, measures to reduce their impacts, like insurance projects, are important: Finally, the most important part of human-tiger coexistence (共存) is an fair and inclusive way to protection. Local communities should have a voice in developing and carrying out protection strategies. 12. What is paragraph 2 mainly about? A. The benefit of ecotourism. B. The importance of saving tigers. C. The necessity of planting forests. D. The influence of tigers on agriculture. 13. How is paragraph 3 mainly developed? A. By giving examples. B. By showing differences. C. By describing a course. D. By providing research results. 14. Why are people not enthusiastic about increasing tiger populations? A. The increased illegal hunting. B. The investment required. C. The previous failure. D. The possible danger. 15. What is the best title for the text? A. Strategies for Preventing Human-Tiger Conflicts. B. Protecting Tiger Habitats and Ecosystem Services. C Challenges and Chances in Human-Tiger Coexistence. D. The Role of Local Communities in Tiger-Protection Efforts. 第二节(共5小题:每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中的两项为多余选项。 When you find a way to enjoy what you’ re studying, you’ll be more motivated (激发) to do well in school — and might even have fun doing it! ___16___ If you can find the things you like learning about, this can help you become more interested in school in general. He went downstairs in a hurry and started to have his breakfast as quickly as possible. “Why are you in such a hurry, early bird?” Mum asked him. “We will have an English spelling test today, Mum,” Peter said. “Mr. White promised to offer prizes to those who get 100 scores. I've been studying the word list since last week. Although the words are difficult, I am well prepared for them.” Peter reviewed the spelling of each word once more carefully when Dad drove him to school. At last, it was time for the students to have a test. “Responsibility,” Mr. White started. Peter wrote it on his test paper quickly and confidently. “The second word: contribution,” Mr. White said. “So easy,” Peter thought. He quickly wrote the word down. Thirty words later, the test papers were collected by Mr. White. “I am to mark your papers now,” he told the class. After marking the test papers, Mr. White said, “three of you won a prize today for excellent test scores. Peter, David and Mary got 100 percent on the spelling test!” Mr. White praised them. Meanwhile, he gave the three students each a dictionary. Peter's was an English-Chinese dictionary —the one he liked best. Peter was so excited that he held it high when his classmates cheered. “This is my happiest moment.” Peter thought. After Mr. White gave the test paper back, Peter had a look at the words, feeling proud of his spelling. All of a sudden, the word “contribution” confused him. It didn't seem right. Peter began to compare them after taking out the word list. “C-o-n-t-r-i-b-u-s-i-o-n,” he whispered. He had spelled it wrong.
