[素能提升] Ⅰ.阅读理解 A The number of weather-related disasters has increased by five times over the past 50 years, the latest report by the World Meteorological (气象) Organization (WMO) said on September. However, thanks to improved early warning systems and disaster management, the number of death from these hazards (危险) has been almost three times less. According to the WMO,from 1970 to 2019,weather,climate and water hazards accounted for 50 percent of all disasters. Among the top 10 hazards that led to the largest loss of human life during this period were droughts, storms, floods and extreme temperatures. However, deaths fell from over 50,000 in the 1970s to less than 20,000 in the 2010s. “Weather, climate and water extremes are increasing and will become more frequent and severe in many parts of the world as a result of climate change,” says WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas. “That means more heat waves, drought and forest fires such as those we have observed recently in Europe and North America. We have more water vapor in the atmosphere, which is worsening extreme rainfall and deadly flooding. The warming of the oceans has affected the frequency and area of existence of the most intense tropical storms.” “Economic losses are increasing as exposure increases. But behind the statistics lies a message of hope. Improved multi-hazard early warning systems have led to a significant reduction in deaths. Quite simply,we are better than ever before at saving lives,” Taalas said. 语篇解读 本文是一篇新闻报道。文章主要报道了极端天气和与此相关的灾难会越来越多,但是人类可以通过早期预警系统拯救更多的生命。 1.What do we know from the first paragraph? We have been fortunate, however,to have suffered no bodily harm or property damage. There is a website that lists all Californian earthquakes recorded from 1769 to the present. The site lists the dates and time as well as the magnitude (震级) and the exact location of any earthquake that measured more than 6.0.There are only a few earthquakes that stand out in my memory and, luckily, none is shown in the website. So,my personal experience with earthquakes might be considered insignificant. There are three earthquakes that are difficult to forget. The first one was in 1955 and our oldest daughter was walking with me in our backyard in Redwood City in California. As the shaking became stronger,I held her to me with one arm as I held on to one of our fruit trees with the other. All three of us (my daughter,I and the tree) shook for two or three minutes that to us felt like hours. The second one was in 1963.Our entire family was visiting Disneyland in Southern California. The earth started to shake just as we were beginning to walk from our hotel towards the famous landmark. My third experience with an earthquake was a lonely one in California. It was in my sixties and I was alone in an old church. As the building started to shake,I quickly headed for the door to go outside. I remember I said a few prayers—something like “Help me get out of here in time, dear Heavenly Father.” Minutes later,I was safe outside. 语篇解读 本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了作者在加州所经历的三次地震的情况。 5.The author writes the passage mainly to tell us about ________. Keeping calm and proper reaction can sometimes save your life. To ride out an earthquake, remember the phrase “drop, cover, and hold on.” 1 1.Move away from buildings, street lights, power lines, and bridges. 2 As soon as the ground begins shaking, try to get as far away as possible from any nearby structures. Do not seek shelter under a bridge or overpass. 2.Crouch down low in a wide open area until the shaking stops. Once you’ve made your way away from nearby structures, get on your hands and knees and cover your head. See if there are any objects nearby to use as a shield (遮蔽物),such as a trash can lid. 3 3. 4 As you go out after the earthquake,be careful of broken glass, rubble, downed power lines, fallen trees, and any other potential danger. Check yourself and anyone nearby for injuries. If necessary, perform first aid and call emergency services. 4.Get to higher ground if you’re on the shore or near a dam.
