Parents usually teach their children how to cross the street safely,by looking both ways for cars. But do they also teach them to put away their cellphones?
The city of Honolulu,Hawaii wants everyone to learn that lesson. Texting while crossing the street will soon be stopped in the city. Beginning on October 24th,you could be fined from $15 to $99 if you step onto a Honolulu street while looking at your phone. Honolulu is the first major US city to stop what is called “distracted walking”.It recently passed a law in a seven-to-two vote. The law says: “No pedestrian (行人) shall cross a street or highway while viewing a mobile electronic device.” In other words,do not look at a screen when you cross the street or you could befined.
The law’s creators hope it will lower the number of people hit and killed by cars in the city. Mayor Kirk Caldwell told Reuters news agency,“We hold the unfortunate distinction (特点) of being a major city with more pedestrians being hit in crosswalks, particularly our seniors, than that of almost any other cities in the country.”
The law includes all electronic devices with screens: cellphones, tablets, gaming devices, digital cameras and laptop computers. The law does permit an exception. Pedestrians may use such devices in the street to call emergency services and rescue workers, such as firefighters and police officers.
Pedestrian deaths have been increasing as the use of cellphones rises. The Governors Highway Safety Association,or GHSA,says pedestrian deaths in the United States increased by 25 percent between 2010 and 2015.That trend continued in 2016 with the number of pedestrian deaths rising to almost
6,000,11% higher than that in 2015.
Other US cities may follow Honolulu. The State of Washington was the first to outlaw distracted driving back in 2007.Now,46 other states as well as D.C.,Puerto Rico,Guam and the US Virgin Islands, also have laws against texting while driving.
语篇解读 本文是一篇新闻报道。文章主要报道了由于在过马路过程中使用手机等电子设备造成了行人死亡率的增长,夏威夷的檀香山市立法禁止过马路时玩手机。

Smartphones, tablets and smart watches are banned (禁止) at school for all children under 15 in France. Under the ban students are not able to use their phones at all during school hours, including meal breaks.
“I think it’s a good thing. School is not about being on your phone,” Paris mum Marie Caroline Madeleine told AFP.“It’s hard with kids. You can’t control what they see and that’s one of the things that worry me as a parent.”
There is no law like this in Australia, but some Australian schools have banned phones.
McKinnon Secondary School in Victoria introduced a total ban in February and Principal Pitsa Binnion said this has been a success.
McKinnon students still have a Chromebook to use in every class for day-to-day learning but they’re not allowed to use social media. Ms Binnion said at first “teachers cheered and students moaned (抱怨)”, but now they’re seeing the advantages.“They come to school and they’re not allowed to use phones at all during the school day, including lunch breaks,” she said.
“It’s been wonderful in terms of students communicating with each other at lunchtime and not looking at their screens,” she said.
Ms Binnion also leads by example and doesn’t use her mobile phone in school.“I think anyone can do it if we’ve done it.”
Not everyone agrees with the ban. Western Sydney University technology researcher Dr Joanne Orlando wrote in online magazine The Conversation earlier this year that Australia should not ban phones in schools because it’s important to educate kids to live in the age they are raised in.
“A good education for students today is knowing how to use technology to learn, communicate and work with ideas,” she wrote.“Banning students from using smartphones is a 1950s response to a modern state-of-play.”

Bad news sells. If it bleeds,it leads. No news is good news, and good news is no news. Those are the classic rules for the evening broadcasts and the morning papers. But now that information is being spread and monitored (监控) in different ways, researchers are discovering new rules. By tracking people’s e-mails and online posts, scientists have found that good news can spread faster and farther than disasters and sob stories.
“The‘if it bleeds’ rule works for mass media,” says Jonah Berger,a scholar at the University of Pennsylvania.“They want your eyeballs and don’t care how you’re feeling. But when you share a story with your friends, you care a lot more how they react. You don’t want them to think of you as a Debbie Downer.”
Researchers analyzing word-of-mouth communication —e-mails,Web posts and reviews,face-to-face conversations—found that it tended to be more positive than negative (消极的),but that didn’t necessarily mean people preferred positive news. Was positive news shared more often simply because people experienced more good things than bad things? To test for that possibility,Dr. Berger looked at how people spread a particular set of news stories: thousands of articles on The New York Times’ website. He and a Penn colleague analyzed the “most e-mailed” list for six months. One of his first findings was that articles in the science section were much more likely to make the list than non-science articles. He found that science amazed Times’ readers and made them want to share this positive feeling with others.
Readers also tended to share articles that were exciting or funny,or that inspired negative feelings like anger or anxiety, but not articles that left them merely sad. They needed to be aroused (激发) one way or the other, and they preferred good news to bad. The more positive an article, the more likely it was to be shared,as Dr. Berger explains in his new book,“Contagious: Why Things Catch On.”

How To Be A Civilized Netizen
Today I’d blog about how to be a civilized netizen.
First of all, keep away from the harmful information on the Internet. If you see or read something that makes you uncomfortable, leave the site immediately. Second,we should make good use of our time for study instead of becoming addicted to the Internet. Third, express our ideas online politely. Don’t post comments that are mean to others. The more polite we are,the more likely it is we will be respected.
Do you have any good advice for being a civilized netizen? Your ideas are welcome below!
第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Back in the early 1980s,the idea of home computers was catching on. I wasn’t keen on getting one. Somehow,I evolved and have owned several computers over the years. Some days,I loved my computer, but more often than not,I hated it. I didn’t grow up with them, and they were a challenge to my mental health. Dealing with modern technology was my introduction to stress, and I know who to blame: my children.
They weren’t satisfied that their dad and I finally bought a computer and learned to send e-mails. We were quite happy with that, but next came a cellphone. Then just talking on the phone was not acceptable;they insisted we learn to text as well. We couldn’t get a break.
I remember well the night that Facebook became a household word around here. Those kids of ours were determined to set up a joint account for us. It took some convincing. We felt no guilt for grating on (激怒) their nerves considering the drama they’d sometimes created for us during their teenage years. A little payback wouldn’t hurt those two.
More recently,my husband and I were forced into getting rid of our flip phones and getting smartphones. I will admit that I progressed into appreciating mine. I liked speaking to Siri and finding out what I needed to know in an instant. I enjoyed having Internet access everywhere I went. I felt a sense of accomplishment;my husband—not so much. To this day,he would happily take back his flip phone.
Last year, our children surprised us with yet another popular form of technology-Alexa. The girls took our smartphones in hand and got us programmed. Before we fully understood what was happening,we could tell Alexa to turn our lamp on or off,and she would. To be honest,we were a bit annoyed at having to learn how to use yet another device, but we decided to keep it. We mastered turning the lamp on and off,and once again I got the hang of it sooner than my husband did. I became his Alexa coach.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
Paragraph 1:
One night,Alexa did not turn on the lamp when I gave the command. ________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________
I tried to say “Turn on the light” to it countless times, but Alexa didn’t work.“New technologies are always unreliable,” my husband complained. I searched the Internet and immediately found the reason why Alex couldn’t work. I just needed to tell Alexa to set the light color to white or whatever color I wanted, and then it would turn on the light. Then Alexa turned on the light itself.
Paragraph 2:
We should thank our children and grandchildren. ___________________ ________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________
It was our children and grandchildren that taught us to use technology so that I could find a solution on the Internet by myself. Without them, our life is always invariable and boring. Our children and grandchildren “force” us to accept and use technology, which seems to put us under pressure. However, the fact is that our children and grandchildren let us really accept and use technology to make our life more convenient.
