Throughout the past year, we followed some interesting new inventions in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). Here is a look back at some notable AI developments in 2022.
Meta’s speech-to-speech translation
Facebook’s parent Meta said it had built a technology tool to directly translate between English and the Hokkien language, a spoken language without a widely used written form. Meta said it trained its AI models on written text examples from Mandarin Chinese. In addition, developers used an encoding (编码) tool designed to compare spoken Hokkien to similar English text.
Method to identify Parkinson’s disease
Researchers announced a new AI method to identify Parkinson’s disease. The system works by measuring a person’s breathing patterns during sleep. With just one night of sleep, the Al system was able to correctly identify Parkinson’s up to 86 percent of the time. With 12 nights of data, the rate went up to 95 percent.
Tool to interpret pig emotions
Researchers announced they had created a technology tool that uses pig sounds to interpret different emotions. The tool is based on thousands of recordings collected from more than 400 pigs throughout their lives. The scientists developed an AI-driven algorithm (算法) to identify a series of emotions pigs could be experiencing. It is expected to lead to further systems farmers can use to improve the productivity and well-being of their animals.
Tool to fill in missing words in ancient writings
Researchers-led by Alphabet’s AI company DeepMind-said they developed an AI system to help fill in missing words in ancient writings. The tool, called Ithaca, is designed to help historians repair the writings and identify when and where they were written. The team said that when historians work on their own, the success rate for repairing damaged writings is about 25 percent. But when humans teamed up with Ithaca to assist in their work, the success rate jumped to 72 percent.

I’d finally got some alone time as a new mom. I put on my running shoes and I found my rhythm as my feet hit the ground. My adrenaline (肾上腺素) kicked in as I told myself, “This is my comeback.” Prior to giving birth to a baby, I had been a runner since my 20s. Running made me feel free and it brought me a sense of peace I couldn’t find anywhere else. The harder my feet worked, the more I relaxed.
Now, as a new mom in my late 30s, I was picking running back up to prove to myself I was still the old me. However, it was not easy. My legs were weak as I shuffled (拖着脚走) down the track. I felt defeated. The old me had never felt so far away. Running felt like a burden, and the joy was far away from me. Even worse, I felt like a living dead at home. My son wasn’t sleeping through the night, which was exhausting all my extra energy.
However, I kept going. I went out for a run again and again. A few times a week, I pulled on my shoes and slowly, my one mile route turned into a 5kilometer. Gone were the debates in my head over whether I was a good mom and whether my house would ever be clean again. Running just let me be.
I had signed up for the half marathon I ran annually before my son was born as a motivation. When I began running, the marathon route felt so long, but then suddenly, it was over. When I crossed the finish line, I felt like a champion wearing my participant’s medal. My finish time was just a number; what mattered more to me was the journey.
Through my running experience, I have realized that nothing is impossible to a willing heart, not only running, but also anything else.
4. Why did the author run in her twenties?
A. To enjoy some alone time. B. To maintain a good figure.
C. To keep physical health. D. To pursue inner peace.

A. Proud. B. Determined. C. Outgoing. D. Modest.
6. What can be inferred from the fourth paragraph?
A. The author occasionally joined in the marathon before.
B. Half marathon seemed longer than expected all the way.
C. What is worth doing well is to achieve high scores.
D. What the author can gain during the process matters most.
7. What message does the article convey to readers?
A. Where there is a will, there is a way. B. A good beginning is half success.
C. Actions speak louder than words. D. Time lost cannot be regained.
【答案】4. D 5. B 6. D 7. A
【解析】

In Western culture, there is a saying, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Similarly, in Chinese culture, there is a saying, “Drink a bowl of Laba Porridge and enjoy a year of health without worries.” Today, let’s make Laba Porridge to have a healthy year.
As the name suggests, Laba Porridge contains eight ingredients (成分), such as dried longan (龙眼), dried lotus seeds, goji berries, pine nuts, and sometimes traditional Chinese medicine. While the porridge can be served plain, it tastes best when sweetened. In some parts of China, people add ingredients like preserved pork sausage (腊肠) and mushrooms to make the porridge tasty.
Before cooking, soak the beans and tough seeds like lotus seeds overnight. This helps them soften and cook faster. The soaking time depends on whether you have a high-pressure pot. If you only have a regular pot, you will need to soak them for an additional 2 hours. Don’t forget to wash all the ingredients at the very beginning, even if you buy them fresh from the supermarket. Then, mix the grains, beans, and nuts with cold water.
After the ingredients are ready, pour in the water into a pot or a high-pressure pot. You can add more water if you prefer a thinner porridge. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat. Once it starts boiling, reduce the heat to low and let it simmer (炖) for about 1.5 to 2 hours. Stir occasionally to prevent the rice from sticking to the bottom of the pot. Add the dried fruits 30 minutes before you turn off the heat, as they are easy to cook. Let the porridge cool slightly before serving. You can enjoy it warm, which is perfect for cold winter days.
Sounds easy, right? Actually, making Laba Porridge itself is a great way to celebrate the Laba Festival. It is not only tasty but also symbolizes health and good luck for the coming year. Enjoy it!
8. How does the writer introduce the topic?
A. By explaining the advantages of Laba Porridge.
B. By comparing a Western saying with a Chinese saying
C. By describing the ingredients used in Laba Porridge
D. By sharing a personal story about making Laba Porridge.
9. What is the main idea of paragraph 2?
A. The history of the Laba Festival.
B. The ingredients of Laba Porridge.
C. The preparation for cooking Laba Porridge.
D. The differences in flavors in northern and southern China.
10. What does the word “soak” mean in paragraph 3?
A. To boil the ingredients. B. To dry the ingredients.
C. To immerse the ingredients in water. D. To mix the ingredients thoroughly.
11. Which of the following is the right order to cook Laba Porridge?
①cooking the beans ②buying the beans ③mixing the beans ④adding dried fruits ⑤washing the beans
⑥soaking the beans ⑦serving the beans
A. ①⑤③②④⑥⑦ B. ⑦①③④⑤②⑥ C. ②⑤⑥③①④⑦ D. ①⑦②④⑤③⑥
【答案】8. B 9. B 10. C 11. C
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍腊八粥的食材、做法及节日意义。
【8题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“In Western culture, there is a saying, ‘An apple a day keeps the doctor away.’ Similarly, in Chinese culture, there is a saying, ‘Drink a bowl of Laba Porridge and enjoy a year of health without worries.’ Today, let’s make Laba Porridge to have a healthy year. (在西方文化中有句谚语:‘一天一苹果,医生远离我。’同样,在中国文化中也有这样的说法:‘喝碗腊八粥,健康无忧一整年。’今天,就让我们一起来熬制腊八粥,迎接健康的一年。)”可知,作者通过对比中外谚语引入话题。故选B。
【9题详解】
主旨大意题。第二段中“As the name suggests, Laba Porridge contains eight ingredients (成分), such as dried longan (龙眼), dried lotus seeds, goji berries, pine nuts, and sometimes traditional Chinese medicine. (顾名思义,腊八粥包含八种食材,如龙眼干、莲子干、枸杞、松子,有时还会加入中药材。)”可知,本段主要介绍腊八粥的食材。故选B。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中“Before cooking, soak the beans and tough seeds like lotus seeds overnight. This helps them soften and cook faster. (煮之前,把豆类和莲子这类较硬的食材soak一夜。这样能让它们变软,更快煮熟。)”可知,在烹饪前对豆子和像莲子这样坚硬的种子进行某种操作,能让它们变软且烹饪得更快。结合常识,将豆子和种子浸泡在水中可以使它们变软,所以soak意为把食材浸泡在水里。故选C。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Don’t forget to wash all the ingredients at the very beginning, even if you buy them fresh from the supermarket. (一开始别忘了把所有食材洗净,即使是从超市新买的也一样。)”、“Before cooking, soak the beans and tough seeds like lotus seeds overnight. (煮之前,把豆类和莲子这类较硬的食材浸泡一夜。)”、“Then, mix the grains, beans, and nuts with cold water. (然后,把谷物、豆类和坚果用冷水混合。)”和第四段中“Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat. (用中火将混合物煮沸。)”、“Add the dried fruits 30 minutes before you turn off the heat, as they are easy to cook. (关火前30分钟再放入干果,因为它们很容易熟。)”可知,制作腊八粥的正确顺序应该是:首先②“buying the beans (买豆子)”;然后⑤“washing the beans (洗豆子)”;接着⑥“soaking the beans (浸泡豆子)”;之后③“mixing the beans (混合豆子)”;再①“cooking the beans (煮豆子)”;然后④“adding dried fruits (加入干果)”;最后⑦“serving the beans (上菜)”。所以正确的顺序是②⑤⑥③①④⑦,故选C。
D
The world’s population will reach 9.5 billion by 2050, and we need more land to grow food. However, today’s farming uses 70% of the world’s fresh water, makes water dirty with chemicals, and needs a lot of fossil fuels. What’s worse, there is no new usable land left for farming.
A good solution is vertical (垂直的) farms — growing crops indoors in tall buildings in cities. These farms use much less water than traditional farming, avoid droughts and floods, and produce food all year round. They also cut the cost of moving food and reduce food going bad, as food is sold near where it is grown.
Some tested technologies make vertical farms possible. Drip irrigation (滴灌) sends water rich in nutrients straight to plant roots, saving a lot of water. Aeroponics (气培法) lets plants grow in air with wet air and nutrients (no soil needed), and hydroponics (水培法) grows plants in water with nutrients. All these methods work well indoors.
Cities have good spaces for vertical farms, such as empty land, old buildings or rooftops. These farms can reuse city wastewater to water crops and burn plant waste to make electricity. Experts say no new technologies are needed to build good vertical farms.
Vertical farms can make cities more sustainable: using resources without wasting them and keeping nature balanced. They create new jobs, offer fresh food, and do less harm to the planet. The only question is — when will we start building them?
12. What is a big problem for farming today?
A. Enough land for farming.
B. Little fresh water in farming.
C. No population growth.
D. No new usable farmland.
13. What can we infer about vertical farms?
A. Vertical farms make more food go bad easily.
B. Vertical farms need more fossil fuels to run.
C. Vertical farms can cut down on farming pollution.
D. Vertical farms take up more land than traditional farms.
14. What is the best title for the text?
A. Vertical Farms:A Smart Solution for Future Farming.
B. Population Growth:A Big Problem for Food Supply.
C. Traditional Farming:Its High Costs and Wastes.
D. New Irrigation Methods:Saving Water for Crops.
15. What is the author’s attitude towards vertical farms?
A. Negative. B. Uncaring. C. Positive. D. Doubtful.
【答案】12. D 13. C 14. A 15. C

One afternoon after school, Mary and her brother, Keith, were eating at a cafe near their home.
They had to share their table with another person, who was a young lady in her twenties. After eating, the lady went to the restroom. Without realizing, she had left her cellphone on the table. Five minutes later, she came out and walked out of the cafe without looking back.
Mary saw the cellphone on the table. She quickly told Keith, “Keith, the lady left behind her cellphone.” Keith looked at the cellphone. It took his breath away. It was one of the latest models on the market. Keith had always wanted a cellphone. But his parents had told him, “You don’t need one. You can always use the house phone.” He stared at it for some minutes. Then, he said slowly, pausing one every word, “I want to take the cellphone.” Mary could not believe her ears. She only stared at her brother, “You can’t! What if the owner comes to look for it?”
After making the decision, Keith quickly got the cellphone and put it in his schoolbag. Then, he took Mary’s hand and led her out of the cafe quickly.
Once back home, Keith locked his room door with trembling hands. Inside his room, he took out that phone. Oh, he liked it so much, now, he had his own cellphone! Soon, he was polishing it happily. But Mary told him, “Keith, you cannot keep the cellphone. What will you tell our father about this? He will ask you how you got the cellphone.” Keith said quickly, “I will say a friend lent it to me.” Mary said, “Now you are lying too. Oh dear! When had Keith turned so dishonest?”
Then, Mary saw a house phone number on the cover of the cellphone. “This must be the lady’s phone number. Why don’t we just call her? We will talk to her and ask her to come and take back her cellphone,” she was trying to talk some sense into him, but Keith just kept silent.

【答案】
That night, Keith turned over in bed from time to time. With mixed feelings, he had difficulty sleeping, uncertain about what he should do. Of course, he liked the new cellphone which had been his dream, but he couldn’t help feeling sorry for the owner. As soon as he thought how sad the young lady would be at the loss of her cellphone, he would be full of guilt and shame. Therefore, after a long and restless night, he was determined to return the cellphone to the lady. After school, he told Mary, “I am going to phone the owner.”
Mary was very happy to hear that. Back home, they phoned the owner’s house phone and a lady’s voice was heard. Keith asked, “Are you the owner of the cellphone? I’m Keith, can you come and get it?” The lady replied “Yes” in an excited voice, expressing her thanks repeatedly. Then they decided to meet at the cafe where she lost the phone. Ten minutes later, the lady appeared to take the phone. Overwhelmed by gratitude, she warmly hugged Mary and Keith and took a photo with them. Whenever Keith saw the smiling faces in the picture, he felt it’s a reminder that honesty was indeed the best policy.

C. What is worth doing well is to achieve high scores.
D. What the author can gain during the process matters most.
7. What message does the article convey to readers?
A. Where there is a will, there is a way. B. A good beginning is half success.

10 What does the word “soak” mean in paragraph 3?
A. ①⑤③②④⑥⑦ B. ⑦①③④⑤②⑥ C. ②⑤⑥③①④⑦ D. ①⑦②④⑤③⑥
