When young Immanuel Patton was five years old, he told his mother that they would graduate together. His mother, Carolyn Patton, just wanted her son to graduate and wasn’t thinking about her own degree. Picture this: Your computer could sense your emotions as you worked — feeling your joy at completing a task, your boredom during repetitive data entry, or your frustration when an error message keeps emerging. This might sound like science fiction, but researchers are bringing this vision closer to reality by developing advanced computational models that can predict human emotions during computer interactions. At the forefront of this effort is a team of Finnish scientists who have created a model. The model essentially puts itself in the user’s shoes, simulating (模拟) the series of actions, outcomes, and cognitive appraisals (认知评估) that ultimately give rise to emotions like happiness, boredom, or frustration. To test their model, the researchers designed a series of interactive computer tasks meant to cause specific emotions. In the “happiness” task, users answered a series of questions and received positive feedback for correct responses. The “boredom” task involved a series of repetitive questions. In the “frustration” task, the system was intentionally programmed to display error messages and ultimately fail, regardless of the user’s answers. As study participants worked through these tasks, the emotional reactions predicted by the model closely matched the emotions reported by the users themselves. The model was even able to discover small changes, such as a steady increase in frustration over the course of the error-ridden task. The researchers believe their emotion-predicting model could pave the way for a new generation of emotionally intelligent computers that can tailor their behavior to the user’s psychological state. An effective system might offer a stressed user comforting words of encouragement, liven up a boring task with humor, or provide emotional assistance when frustration mounts. “By creating interactions that are more emotionally attuned, designers could boost user engagement, productivity, and overall well-being,” they add. However, the model is still in progress and needs to be extended to recognize a wider range of emotions across more complex, real-world computer interactions. The researchers also emphasize the importance of gathering more diverse training data to ensure the model can accurately predict emotions for users of all backgrounds. 35. How does the author introduce the topic of the text? A By making a comparison. B. By creating an imaginary scene. C. By telling a real life story. D. By sharing a popular book. 36. What were computer users asked to do in the study? A. Comfort each other. B. Report their feelings. C. Get rid of boredom. D. Stay disconnected online. 37. What is paragraph 5 mainly about? A. Great improvements on the model. B. Characteristics of future computer users. C. Researchers’ expectation of their model. D. Computer users’ responses to the model. 38. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Smart Computers May Replace Humans B. Interactions with Computers Are Enjoyable C Computers Might Understand Our Emotions D. An Emotion-predicting Model Meets Challenges A paper published by professors and students from 14 Chinese universities aimed at restoring Chinese citizens reputation for honesty has triggered hot discussion on social media platforms. More than 100 professors and students from the universities, along with a professor from Old Dominion University in the United States, conducted experiments at 500 different locations in China. Through data analysis, they invalided a paper published in the journal Science, which found that Chinese citizens ranked the lowest in terms of civil honesty. The Chinese paper, titled “Unlocking controversies (争议) over civil honesty measurement: An extended field replication (复制) in China”, was published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, or PNAS, in the US in July. It challenged the findings of a study conducted by four behavioral economists, including Alain Cohn from the University of Michigan, in 2019. Cohn’s study involved a transnational experiment in which foreign research assistants handed in lost wallets to employees at public institutions such as hotels and banks, and measured civil honesty based on the response rate to email announcements about the wallets being found. The paper found that China ranked lowest among 40 countries. Yang Qian, a professor at Zhejiang University’s School of Public Health, said the conclusions reached by Cohn’s study caused significant doubt within the academic community due to limited criteria and failure to consider cultural differences between countries. As the first and corresponding author of the paper “Unlocking controversies over civil honesty measurement”, Yang added, “It is thought that Cohn did not conduct extensive pilot experiments. In Western thinking, email is considered the standard method of communication.” Another experiment conducted by group replication researchers found that although only 27. 4 percent of wallet owners were contacted by email, 77, 8 percent of the lost wallets were successfully returned. The important indicator of “wallet recovery rate” proved that Chinese citizens have a high level of integrity. The experiment found a significant negative relationship between the “email response rate” and the “national collectivism index”. 39. What does the underlined word in paragraph 2 probably mean? A. Approved of. B. Argued against. C. Accounted for. D. Answered for. 40. Why does the author mention the paper published in Science? A. To seek support. B. To raise a hot discussion. C. To clarify a phenomenon. D. To reveal false information. 41. What did Cohn’s study ignore? A. The limited participation in the experiment. B. The various personalities of Chinese citizens. C. The negative relationships between countries. D. The different cultural backgrounds between countries. 42. What can we learn from the last paragraph? A. “Email response rate” shows the accurate level of integrity. B. “Wallet recovery rate” has a significant negative relationship between people. C. “Wallet recovery rate” indicates Chinese citizens ranking high in terms of honesty. D. “Email response rate” and “national collectivism index” are irrelevant to each other Do’s and Don’ts in Whale(鲸) Watching The Department of Fisheries and Oceans has developed guidelines for whale watching in Johnstone Strait, where killer whales are found on a daily basis each summer. It is strongly recommended that vessel(船只) operators follow these guidelines for all kinds of whales. Approach whales from the side, not from the front or the back. Approach no closer than 100 meters, then stop the boat but keep the engine on. Keep noise levels down—no horns, whistles or racing of engines. Start your boat only after the whales are more than 100 meters from your vessel. Leave the area slowly, gradually moving faster when you are more than 300 meters from the whales. Approach and leave slowly, avoiding sudden changes in speed or direction. Avoid disturbing groups of resting whales. Keep at low speeds and remain in the same direction if travelling side by side with whales. When whales are travelling close to shore, avoid crowding them near the shore or coming between the whales and the shore. Limit the time spent with any group of whales to less than 30 minutes at a time when within 100 to 200 meters of whales. If there is more than one vessel at the same observation spot, be sure to avoid any boat position that would result in surrounding the whales. Work together by communicating with other vessels, and make sure that all operators are aware of the whale watching guidelines. 43. For whom is this text written? A. Tour guides. B. Whale watchers. C. Vessel operators. D. Government officials. 44. When leaving the observation areas, the vessel should _____. A. move close to the beach B. increase speed gradually C. keep its engine running slowly D. remain at the back of the whales 45. When going side by side with whales, the vessel should . A. keep moving in the same direction B. surround the whales with other boats C. travel closer and closer to the shore D. take a good viewing position 46. What is the shortest safe distance from the whales? A. 400 meters. B. 300 meters. C. 200 meters. D. 100 meters. 第二节 (共4小题,满分10分) 阅读下面短文,根据题目要求用英文回答问题。 It’s strange that a man born on Labor Day has had to work so hard to succeed in life. Jacob seems like a normal person. He likes music, art and photography. His parents both got college degrees. He used to go to a beach house in Portland every summer. He is a big fan of Mexican food. Reading these facts about him may lead to the opinion that he had a great childhood. However, behind all of these is a past that would be terrible for many kids growing up. It started when he was only two years old. His parents divorced and then remarried. Going through elementary school and middle school, he was frightened a lot. This may have led to the worst thing that could have happened to a young man. He developed deep depression. Doing the smart thing, he talked to his parents about his problem. His parents decided that this issue was very serious and Jacob was admitted to West Hills Hospital. He stayed there for two weeks and had his depression diagnosed. Serious insomnia caused the problem. The solution was daily medication. The medication took care of Jacob’s depression problem. However, it contained a substance with lithium (锂). The side effect he suffered from lithium was that he got spoonfuls of sugar and ate it with anything else that was on his plate. This led to a weight gain of 25 pounds while he was on medication. So he decided he had to lose some weight and stop the medication. Now he has lost a big part of the weight and he has managed to solve his problem he had in high school. Now he is a happy human being. Many people would have had a very hard time coming back from depression. Many people probably would have given up their dreams. But Jacob is not like this. He took what was a mess of his life and turned it around to become a great man and a person with a very bright future. 47. How did Jacob gain the weight of 25 pounds while on medication?(No more than 5 words) _________________________________________________________________________________ 50. How to Make a Good Video Resumé (简历)? Video resumés have been around for a long time. With a well-made video resumé, you can present yourself creatively and allow a hiring manager to assess your personality, thus giving you an opportunity for interview. But how to make a good video resumé? First, start by introducing yourself and addressing the company you are applying to. For example, “Hello InVideo, I’m John Doe”. Not only does this get their attention but it makes them feel prioritized. The next thing is to address what profession you’re in or desire to be in. If you’re a filmmaker, you can simply state that or be creative with words and say you’re a visual storyteller. Then, talk about your passion for what you do and support it by referring to your past experiences and work. For example, building on the filmmaker’s introduction, you could talk about how meeting people from around the world and sharing their stories deeply motivates you, and then you can share an experience that supports it. You can also focus on life experiences that have led you to cultivate skills-like taking a year off to travel abroad, volunteering at a shelter, or a hobby that you actively pursue. You can also speak about your special achievements and awards that will add value to your profile or you can get someone to speak on behalf of you as social proof. At the end of the video, leave the ball in their court. However, you also need to give them a reason to call you for an interview. For example, you could end the video with this — “I have a lot more to me than I could fit in this short video and I hope you give me a chance to tell you about it over an interview”. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第二节 书面表达(共1题,满分25分) 52. The Internet has long been regarded as a wonderful tool that allows students to gain insight to useful resources and information. A. By making a comparison. Interactions with Computers Are Enjoyable C. Computers Might Understand Our Emotions D. D. “Email response rate” and “national collectivism index” are irrelevant to each other 【答案】39. B 40. D 41. A. keep moving in the same direction B. surround the whales with other boats C. travel closer and closer to the shore D. take a good viewing position 46. What is the shortest safe distance from the whales? A. 400 meters. B. 300 meters. C. 200 meters. D. 100 meters. 【答案】43. C 44. B 45. A 46. It is strongly recommended that vessel(船只) operators follow these guidelines for all kinds of whales.可知,这些对各种各样的鲸都必须遵守的操作规则被强烈地推荐给船只操作员。由此判断出文章是写给船只操作员的。故选C项。 【44题详解】 细节理解题。从操作规则第四、五条“Start your boat only after the whales are more than 100 meters from your vessel.Leave the area slowly, gradually moving faster when you are more than 300 meters from the whales”可知:在一百米之外,才能启动船只;三百米之外,才逐渐加速。所以离开观测区域时,应逐渐加快航速。故选B项。 【45题详解】 细节理解题。根据操作规则第八条Keep at low speeds and remain in the same direction if travelling side by side with whales.可知:当船只和鲸并排前进时,保持低速且应同一个方向前进。故选A项。 【46题详解】 细节理解题。根据从操作规则第二条Approach no closer than 100 meters, then stop the boat but keep the engine on.可知:靠近鲸不能低于一百米,然后停止,但要让发动机开着。所以最近的安全观察距离应是100米。故选D项。 第二节 (共4小题,满分10分) 阅读下面短文,根据题目要求用英文回答问题。 It’s strange that a man born on Labor Day has had to work so hard to succeed in life. 47. Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 Video resumés offer a creative way to show personality and skills. Begin your video resumé by introducing yourself, addressing the company, and stating your profession or desired role. Then discuss your passion and back it with past experiences, life skills, achievements or recommendations. Conclude by inviting an interview, emphasizing there’s more to share.(53 words) 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。 要点摘录 ①With a well-made video resumé, you can present yourself creatively and allow a hiring manager to assess your personality, thus giving you an opportunity for interview. ②First, start by introducing yourself and addressing the company you are applying to. ③The next thing is to address what profession you’re in or desire to be in. ④Then, talk about your passion for what you do and support it by referring to your past experiences and work. ⑤However, you also need to give them a reason to call you for an interview. However, this is not always the case. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】The Internet has long been regarded as a wonderful tool that allows students to gain insight to useful resources and information. However, this is not always the case. As is vividly shown in the picture, a boy is happy with the fact that he can depend on the Internet to finish tasks without any difficulty. It mirrors that students tend to make use of the Internet to gain information nowadays. There are some reasons accounting for it. First, students find it convenient to surf the Internet for useful information. Second, the pressure to succeed also causes students to turn to computers for accurate answers. Consequently, it’s likely that students will lose interest in studying, which is not beneficial to their overall development. In my opinion, it is vital that students gain confidence in themselves and their abilities while doing tasks. Besides, teachers and parents should encourage students to be creative. Finally, doing tasks independently is of great significance. 词汇积累 高兴的:happy→delighted 导致:cause→lead to 结果:consequently→as a result 在我看来:in my opinion→as far as I’m concerned 2.句式拓展 简单句变强调句 原句:Besides, teachers and parents should encourage students to be creative. 拓展句:Besides, it is teachers and parents who should encourage students to be creative. 【点睛】[高分句型1] As is vividly shown in the picture, a boy is happy with the fact that he can depend on the Internet to finish tasks without any difficulty.(运用了as引导非限制性定语从句,that引导同位语从句) [高分句型2] In my opinion, it is vital that students gain confidence in themselves and their abilities while doing tasks.(运用了that引导主语从句和状语从句的省略) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
