We all know that honesty is an important value and that lying is wrong, but who can honestly say that theyʼve never told a lie⑧? [3]Perhaps we comfort⑨ ourselves with the knowledge that most of the lies we tell are “white lies⑩”: little lies that we tell to protect others from⑪ the truth. [4]
knowledge 后面是that 引导的同位语从句;we tell是省略了关系代词that或which的定语从句;little lies后是that 引导的定语从句;to protect others from the truth为动词不定式短语表示目的。

One of the main reasons for telling a white lie is to try to make others feel better. However, when we lie and say that someoneʼs haircut looks good,or when we say that we love a meal that we secretly hate, are we really hoping to improve the situation for someone else? [8] Perhaps we are in fact lying to protect ourselves from the disappointment⑱and anger of others.

Stop for a moment and consider that perhaps your friend wants some frank㉑ comments㉒ from you so that they can improve. [10] Or perhaps, they need to know that they should look for a different hobby.

A
Friends are gifts and treasures. When asked to point out one or two things that are most important to themselves, many put friends ahead of homes, jobs, clothes and cars.
A true friendship carries a long history of experience that determines who we are and keeps us connected. It is a treasure we should protect. Unfortunately, the better friends you are, the more probably youʼll have disagreements. And the result can be what you donʼt want—an end to the relationship.
The good news is that most troubled friendships can be mended. First, donʼt let your pride get in your way. Most of us can forgive each other when differences are brought out in the open. Second, apologize when youʼre wrong—even if youʼve been wronged. Over the course of a friendship, even the best people make mistakes. Sometimes, it may be best if the wronged person takes the lead and apologizes. When you apologize, give your friend a chance to admit that he has been wrong. Third, see things from your friendʼs point of view. And finally, accept that friendships change as our needs and lifestyles change. Making friends can sometimes seem easy. The hard part is keeping the connections strong during the natural ups and downs that have an effect on all relationships. My suggestion: Consider friendship an honor and a gift, and worth the effort to treasure and nurture.

I met a beautiful soul yesterday. I went to work with my computer to a local café so that I could have dinner there. It was raining a bit this time and also I was among people. Sometimes when you work from home all day this is in itself a treat. And the magic of the connection sometimes happens—a smile, someone offering you the newspaper, a short conversation with the staff, a peace dove flying past and lots of possibilities for love and kindness.
Well, magic did happen. I heard a man who was speaking with difficulty and very loud. I noticed he could not speak so clearly and he had some kind of impairment(损伤). As often happens, people looked at him or avoided doing so, and then—as if embarrassed or afraid—looked down. In these cases I try to do the opposite. I imagined a person in these circumstances would want to feel included.
So I decided to deliberately look at him and smile. It was an instant! He looked at me, smiled and immediately said hello. With a combination of spoken and body language he asked if he could approach me. I agreed. He introduced me to his friend who taught sign language online and explained that they were both deaf, after which he even told me about his wife and how he loved teaching. I apologised for not knowing sign language and hoped Iʼd learnt. We still managed to have a beautiful “conversation” which made us all very happy. “Iʼm sure weʼll meet again to experience the magic of being and being with others.”

However, since many colleges randomly assign your first roommate, you also run the risk of being matched with someone you find challenging. Either way, hereʼs some good advice.

Having a college roommate is most peopleʼs first experience living with someone who is not related to them. It comes with both benefits and challenges. _______________________________________________________________ You get an instant friend, someone to confide in(透露秘密) and keep you company during your first time away from home. However, since many colleges randomly assign your first roommate, you also run the risk of being matched with someone you find challenging. Either way, hereʼs some good advice.
G.Getting along with your roommate can enhance your college experience.
由上文中的“It comes with both benefits and challenges.”可知,拥有大学室友既有好处,又有挑战,下文“you also run the risk of being matched with someone you find challenging”表示随机分配室友,你也会面临挑战,因此,该空可能会说明拥有大学室友的好处,故G项符合语境。
Establish some rules
_________________________________________ In this way, you and your roommate are clear on what to do to avoid conflicts. Establish rules like what space is whose, when you need quiet time to study, which items you can share, when you go to bed, if you like to sleep in on weekends and whoʼs allowed to eat what in the refrigerator.
A.Make your preferences known from the start.
Practice direct communication
Practicing direct communication will help you in good times and bad. Dorm rooms are close quarters, so even if you get along with your roommate, there is bound to be a disagreement or two. ____________________________ ___________________ You canʼt expect your roommate to be a mind reader, so if you get upset or frustrated, communicate it to your roommate right away.
C.Handle such conflicts with
open communication.
下文中的“if you get upset... right away”也是提示,故C项切题,且该选项中的“such conflicts”呼应上文中的“a disagreement or two”。
________________________________________________ Youʼll find such way gets better reception and ultimately a better response than if you just attack or criticize.
E.Use a respectful tone and choose your words carefully.
根据上文中的“communicate it to your roommate right away”和下文中的“Youʼll find such way... better response”可知,E项顺承上文提出的“沟通”,表明应该用尊重的语气正确沟通,良好的沟通方式能得到更好的回应,故选E项。
Compromise sometimes
When it comes to doing chores around the room, listening to certain kinds of music, watching different TV shows and requesting privacy, compromise is the key. If you give a little, your roommate will give a little, too. Compromising does not refer to giving in to all of someoneʼs requests. ___________________ _________________________ So, utilize(使用) positive communication, and talk through the things you and your roommate differ on until you can reach a compromise.
B.Instead, it means
coming to a mutual agreement.
根据空前的“Compromising does not refer to giving in to all of someoneʼs requests.”
