Fifty years ago, the well-loved musician Bob Dylan played at the Newport Folk Festival and was widely booed (嘘声). The audience may have been unhappy but Dylan's performance helped change the direction of music and culture in the United States.
The mid-1960s were a time of great change. One such place of change was the world of folk music. Bob Dylan became a symbol of change when he moved from acoustic (原声的) to electric guitar.
Rock music historian Elijah Wald has written a new book about the change. It is called “Dylan Goes Electric”.
“There was a moment in the early 1960s when you could look at the Billboard charts and seven of the top 10 albums were folk records. And Joan Baez, Peter Paul and Mary, the Kingston Trio, all had huge, huge, huge number-one records.”
And then this happened: The “British Invasion” introduced the world to the Beatles and grew a huge fan base for rock music. “That worried many folk musicians,” says Elijah Wald.
They hoped that Bob Dylan would come to the rescue. However, a new Dylan sound came from the stage.
Bob Dylan had gone electric, and the followers of folk music were not pleased.
“When Dylan went electric, I think one of the issues was the feeling that — wait a minute, he's gone over to the enemy.”
Folk lovers had looked to Bob Dylan to save their movement from rock and roll. But, author Wald says Dylan felt differently about the music.
“Dylan had always liked rock and roll and Dylan didn't think of rock and roll as stupid music.” In fact, Dylan was a Beatles fan. He later said that from the first time he heard the Beatles he knew “they were pointing to the direction where music had to go”.
Beyond the music, Dylan's performance that night also marked a turn in American culture.

What did people do for fun before smartphones and computers were invented? After conducting research, I learned that Cantonese Opera (粤剧) was the top form of entertainment in China for centuries. With singing and spoken lines delivered in the Cantonese Dialect, Cantonese Opera is one of several operatic types born in Guangdong Province.
To learn more about the art form, I spoke with Lui Hung-kwong, program director of the Cantonese Opera Academy of Hong Kong. He's also a well-known performer. Here is something from our conversation.
From the 19th century through the early 20th century, opera troupes (剧团) would perform along the Pearl River Delta in southern China. They lived on boats that were painted red and transported them to various temple festivals during the performance season.A troupe typically stayed in a city for a few days, performing different plays each day.By the 1930s, the major performing places for Cantonese opera had moved to big cities, and more convenient forms of transportation began to be used.As a result, the red boats began to disappear.
In each opera production, the story is told through the “four basic skills” of singing, acting, delivery of spoken lines and martial arts. These are improved by stage makeup, costumes, props and the beats on gongs and drums. The performance is a mix of literature, drama, ballad singing, dance and martial arts.
Cantonese Opera is supposed to mirror real life.Older generations read the old stories, and listened to them on the radio. It was like pop culture to them. But our lives today differ greatly from the stories told in the opera. So Cantonese Opera begins to tell some themes that will interest kids today. For example, a fairy fails an exam and is forced to come to the earth, where she must learn from human children.

An international design competition was held in 1955 for an art center to be built. There were 233 entries received from many countries.Danish architect Jorn Utzon won the competition with his unique design of shells that looked like sails on a boat.
The construction began on March 2, 1959 and was expected to be accomplished within 4 years. However, they quickly ran into trouble. The ground was not suitable to hold the weight of the building and huge concrete foundations (混凝土地基) had to be built.Mr Utzon had also made mistakes about how many columns (柱) would be needed to support the roof, thus making the concrete shells at the risk of falling down.
Mr Utzon figured out a new way to disperse the weight of the concrete by making each shell out of a part of a perfect globe. The 14 shells look like a single piece of concrete, but they are actually built across frames (框架) of concrete to hold them in place. They weigh as much as 15 tons each. The highest roof point of the building is 67 m above sea level — the same as a 22-storey high building.
This major correction saved the project but added one decade to the building time. The building consists mainly of two main halls, a number of smaller theaters, performance halls and other additional facilities. Both main halls are housed in relatively large sail-shaped structures, and the smaller performance halls are housed at the ground floor. In particular, the grand organ (风琴) in the concert hall is one of the world's largest organs containing over 10,000 pipes.
The Sydney Opera House is a great success in the history of architecture. It is not only a world-famous performing arts center and the landmark of Sydney, but also recognized as one of the seven wonders of the world of the 20th century. In 2007, the Sydney Opera House was added to UNESCO's World Heritage List.

A.Put on. B.Spread out.

Emily White was born seventeen years ago.She was born with many physical issues affecting her tiny body. Some of her organs, bones and muscles were out of shape. No one expected her to survive. She did make it, but she had a strange figure that everyone could recognize, even from a distance.
In Emily's hometown, there was a yearly outdoor performance in the school auditorium (观众席) at Christmas. It had been performed for so many years that it had become one of the most important events of the Christmas season for many of the townsfolk. Each year, many people tried out for the show, but most were turned away.Only the best performers were invited to take part.
Emily had a beautiful singing voice.Last year, she asked Mrs.Owens, her music teacher, if she could join in the performance.Without letting her sing, Mrs.Owens took a look at Emily's body and said, “Child, you just don't fit.Everyone would stare at you and that would make you uncomfortable. It would make them uncomfortable too.”
Mrs.Owens sent Emily back through the door of the choral (合唱队的) room without even hearing her sing a single note.Hurt and upset, Emily decided never to try out again. But then Mrs.Owens retired, and the following school year, a new music teacher arrived, named Mr.Butler.
He had heard about Emily and suggested that she give it a try.
Emily didn't want to be refused again, so she was a little hesitant to say yes.As Emily struggled with her decision, the door was pushed open and Mr.Butler said, “Emily, you're next.” Although she was nervous, Emily did as Mr.Butler told her to do.Mr.Butler sat by the piano to accompany Emily. When Emily finished her test performance, she thanked Mr.Butler and knew the result would be posted on the door of the choral room the next day.
Emily couldn't sleep that night. She was worried that she would never fit in.By the next morning, the stress was too much to bear and she started to feel sick.

She would sing alone in the performance.Emily couldn't believe her eyes. There must be some mistake. But Mr.Butler said to her with determined eyes, “Emily, I choose you because you should perform the part — your voice is unusual.Believe in yourself.” Greatly encouraged, Emily practiced really hard.
Finally, the day of performance came.Standing in front of the line, Emily felt her throat tight and her palms sweating. When the curtain opened up, the eyes of the whole audience fell upon Emily.“Emily White!” Someone whispered. Then, along with the first note of music, Emily began to sing her heart out.Her voice was like a nightingale ringing in the auditorium.Applause! Emily felt so happy and comfortable. She was shining on the stage.Emily White, with so many birth problems in her body, was an angel.
