A mother goat is able to pick out her own
baby from its voice alone by the time the kid is
just five days old.
Researchers from University of London played
kids'bleats to female goats and studied their re-
sponses. They were surprised to find that the ani-
mals were able to pick out their own kids'voices.
"A mother and the kid rely a lot on smell to
recognize one another and,in the wild, during the
first week of their lives, the animals hide in grass
and don't call much. It's a strategy they use to
avoid enemies,"Dr Elodie Briefer, who led the
research,explained to BBC News."The mother
calls to the kids when she wants them to come
and feed,so we expected that kids would recog-
nize the mothers'voices."In fact, this was the
case for deer, which also use this hiding strategy,
although they do not belong to the same family of
species as goats.
She and her team recorded and played back
young kids'calls to the female goats and recorded
their responses.She explained,"Even when the
·6
calls came from kids that are five to six days old,
we could see the mothers responding more to the
voices of their own babies."Hearing the voices of
their own kids, the females would look towards
the speaker that the sound was coming from,
moving around and calling in response.
The scientists say that understanding how
goats behave and communicate is very important.
"This helps us understand just how smart these
animals are,"said Dr Briefer."Farmers might be
able to change their way to raise goats consider-
ing this natural behaviour.

Once an old man used to go out to jog every
morning. One day he was running around a track
that circled the high school football field while
the football team was conducting their practice.
When the players began running their races up
and down the field, the man said to himself de-
terminedly,"I'll just keep running if they don't
stop.So they ran and he ran. They kept on run-
ning and he kept on running.
Finally,totally exhausted,the old man had
to stop. When he stopped,an equally exhausted
football player walked over to him and said,
"Sir,I'm glad you finally stopped. Our coach has
told us that we have to keep running as long as
you are jogging!”
It seems to me that we can sometimes find
ourselves in a similar kind of situation when it
comes to contradictions-that is when we have
different opinions about something with someone
and get into an argument with him or her,our
voices get raised.Neither side wants to be the
first to give in,to stop speaking in anger.Every-
one has the attitude,"I'll just keep on till he
.6
gives in.So the other party stays mad.So we
stay mad.And on we go,finally finding our-
selves emotionally and even physically exhausted
by the continuing animosity(敌意).
Let me challenge you to do something very
difficult. The next time you get into an argu-
ment,be the first to give in.Be the first to stop
the shouting and the name-calling.Be the first to
say,“I'm sorry.”It's the quickest way to stop
that.As a saying goes,"A soft answer turns
away extreme anger,but a harsh(严厉的)word
stirs up anger.”
28.What happened to the old man that day?
A.He guided the students to practise run-
ning.
B.He joined the football team to play a game.
C.He decided to compete with the football
players.
D.He asked the players to take care of the
football field.
29.Why did the football player come to the old
man?
A.To show respect for his great courage.
B.To praise him for his good performance.
C.To complain to him about his keeping run-
ning.
D.To express satisfaction with his stopping
running.
30.What does the underlined word "contradic-
tions"in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Disagreements.B.Misunderstandings.
C.Misfortunes.
D.Disappointments.
31.What's the purpose of the last paragraph?
A.To provide the effective way to make an
apology.
B.To show it is hard for us to take up the
challenge.
C.To warn us to control our bad emotion
properly.
D.To advise us to take active action when we
disagree with others.

If you visit the
new Mummies(木乃
伊)show at the Amer-
ican Museum of Natu-
ral History (AMNH),in New York City, don't
miss the Gilded Lady.Scientists say she probably
died of lung disease when she was in her 40s-
about 2,000 years ago-in Egypt.They even
have a model of her skull.Based on that,an art-
ist was sure how she may have looked when she
was alive.And yet,the mummy's coffin(棺材)
has never been opened.Instead, scientists used a
machine called a CT scanner(扫描仪)to look in
side.
CT scanners were developed to help doctors
examine patients. But the machines turned out to
be perfect for studying mummies,too.
6
"A hundred years ago, scientists would usu-
ally open mummies'coffins. This did a great deal
of harm to those mummies, says AMNH presi-
dent Ellen V.Futter."We just don't do that an-
ymore. We can do so much better.By using CT
scanners, scientists can know about an ancient
person's diet from some of a mummy's hair.
Pieces of bone can show who was related to
whom.”
Some mummies in Peru were buried with a
skull hanging from their neck.Scientists thought
these mummies wore the skull of an enemy. But
DNA evidence showed that the mummies were
buried with the skull of an ancestor.
The 19 mummies in the show are from Egypt
and Peru. They had completely different reasons
for mummifying the dead. The ancient Egyptians
believed that mummification allowed an ancestor
to live on in the next world. The people who pre-
pared the Gilded Lady thought she would contin-
ue to see,hear,and smell.In ancient Peru,peo-
ple practiced mummification to stay connected
with their ancestors. Some families kept mum-
mies in their home.
Futter calls the mummies in the show "mes-
sengers from another time."With the help of
technology,scientists will continue to uncover
mummies'secrets so we can understand it.
32.What did scientists find about the Gilded La-
dy?
A.She was a great artist.
B.She died a natural death.
C.She lived in ancient Egypt.
D.She had an amazingly long life.
33.What do Futter's words suggest?
A.Pieces of bone show a person's diet.
B.CT scanners do great harm to mummies.
C.Mummies usually wore the skull of an ene-
my.
D.Technology plays an important role in
mummy studies.
34.Why did the ancient Peruvians make mum-
mies?
A.To do traditional medical research.
B.To keep close ties with their relatives.
C.To help their families live a better life
D.To let their ancestors live in another
world.
35.What does the underlined word "it"in the last
paragraph refer to?
A.The technology.
B.Their message.
C.Their family
D.The show.
