From Agatha Christie to Ian Fleming to Jane Austen, here are four famous author homes-turned hotels where bookworms can stay closer to their favorites.
Ian Fleming’s beachside villa
Oracabessa Bay Jamaica
The entire property remains its private charm that defined the British writer’s life and work. This ultra-private two-bedroom villa comes with two additional guest cottages, a private servant and cook, its own beach and swimming pool, and, most notably, Fleming’s original writing desk from which 007 was born.
Agatha Christie’s holiday home
Devon, England
Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot’s followers can get closer to the heart of Christie’s works by staying at her former holiday home in Devon, England. While the guest apartment has modern services and furniture. the rest of Greenway is styled like Christie would have had it in the 1950s, making it seem as though she and her family had just stepped out.
An Austen family townhouse
London, England
Peaceful English country homes, with art-filled walls and names worthy of their place in history, exist almost as characters themselves in Jane Austen’s novels. A few of these temporary homes are now places where Austen fans can stay themselves. Opened in 2020 following an extensive repair to bring the townhouse back to its former glory, the hotel’s rooms are named for Austen family members who stayed or lived here. Add in the period antiques, a collection of Austen first editions, as well as original letters from Jane to her brother at this address.
Tennessee Williams’s permanent hotel suite
New York City, US
For the last chapters of his life, the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tennessee Williams made the fashionable Midtown Manhattan Hotel Elysée his home base. Today hotel guests can book a stay in what was part of Williams’s unconventional accommodation. Known as the Sunset Suite in his day, the space has been renamed the Tennessee Williams Suite and is decorated with photographs and handwritten notes from the playwright’s life and career.

From a young age, I collected role models. In school, as a teenager, I tried to channel Whitney Houston. In the working world, I paid close attention to our female senior managers. By watching and imitating others-especially women of color who looked or sounded like me-I gained confidence in my own abilities.
But when I started my own company, my pool of role models became smaller. Only 2.1% of risk investment goes to women-founded companies. “Who can I look up to?” I wondered. “Who can I learn from?” I decided to create an inspiration wall in my office, with photos of the role models I could see-women like Oprah, Michelle Obama, and Vicky, co-founder of a skincare brand. I never thought I’d meet these women, but their success gave me hope.
Then one day, a couple of years ago, I surprised myself with a thought: what if I did reach out to one of my role models? I feared rejection, but my desire for connection was stronger. I chose Vicky, whose journey had long inspired me. I didn’t have her email address. So I tried a cold Instagram message, and she responded the next day!
That was in 2022. We’ve spoken numerous times since, and the conversations have been invaluable. They’re rare chances to gain guidance from a successful woman. But here’s the most valuable lesson I gained: when Vicky first replied to me, I wasn’t the only one excited. Vicky was excited too-because she’s always looking for ways to support other women. All my life, I’d thought of role models as a one-way relationship: I’d gain strength from someone stronger. But the situation is more than that.
I once sent Vicky a care package from my sunglasses company. She wrote me a thank-you note, and texted a selfie of her and her daughter wearing my products. Today, I keep that letter on my desk next to my keyboard—a reminder that just as I believe in her, she believes in me. We’re all here to help each other grow.
24. How did the author build up her confidence?
A. By cooperating with women of color. B. By observing and copying her models.
C. By making friends with persons like her. D. By starting her own sunglasses company.
25. What is the author’s intention of creating an inspiration wall in her office?
A. To inspire her employees’ creativity. B. To make her workplace more attractive.
C. To encourage herself to achieve success. D. To improve her employees’ work efficiency.
26. Why did the author choose to reach out to Vicky?
A. She was afraid of being rejected. B. She only had Vicky’s email address.
C. Vicky’s story had always motivated her. D. Vicky liked giving guidance to other women.
27. What can be concluded according to the text?
A. Practice makes perfect. B. Strength flows both ways.
C. A good beginning is half done. D. Actions speak louder than words.

Imagine hopping on a school bus and being transported to an immersive (沉浸式的) educational tour of the inside of the human body — and no, not on a fictional episode of The Magic School Bus. This is the kind of experience that Meta hopes to enable for students, digitally, through its Quest virtual reality (VR) headsets.
Bring VR into more classrooms could enable new kinds of learning opportunities. For example, it may allow drama students to feel like they’re having an immersive, real-time experience watching Shakespeare’s work performed at the Globe Theatre in the 17 century. New Mexico University is using the headsets to teach criminal justice students to investigate virtual crime scenes, and Morehouse College has developed a “digital twin campus” to teach students a range of subjects through VR, both through a partner program with Meta to test educational applications of the technology.
But VR also creates concerns about digital safety and the potential harm to humans who are having more digital interactions and fewer in-person ones. Moreover, the cost of involving VR headsets in the classroom could be an obstacle to adoption for the many schools already struggling with limited resources. While cheaper than some other headsets on the market, Meta’s Quest 3 devices still start at $499 each. Most importantly, it remains unclear just how useful virtual reality is in helping students learn better.
“I think that VR is one area where additional research is necessary,” said Vincent Quan, an education researcher and co-executive director of the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab. “With technology, sure, it can have a lot of promise, but at the same time, there can also be a lot of hype (夸张的宣传), and I think it’s important to carefully evaluate these types of technologies. Sometimes you don’t know if it’s just innovative and cool versus actually impactful.”
28. Why is The Magic School Bus mentioned in the first paragraph?
A. To introduce the topic of VR. B. To promote immersive education.
C. To recommend a popular TV series D. To advertise a new means of transport.
29. How can VR benefit students according to Paragraph 2?
A. By increasing their in-person interactions. B. By satisfying diverse learning requirements.
C. By assisting them in understanding concepts. D. By enabling learning beyond time limitations.
30. What can be inferred from the price of VR devices?
A. The price will affect that of similar products in the market.
B. The price is quite acceptable to both teachers and students.
C. VR devices are more cost-effective than other learning tools.
D. The price can be a heavy burden for financially troubled school.
31. What does Vincent Quan suggest about VR in education?
A. Technology will make it useful and cheap. B. Teachers can depend on it in the classroom.
C. It can benefit all students around the world. D. More research is needed to evaluate its impact

The US government just hired a researcher who thinks we can beat aging with fresh cloned bodies and brain updates. Jean Hébert, a new hire with the US Advanced Projects Agency for Health, is expected to lead a major new initiative around “functional brain tissue replacement”, the idea of adding youthful tissue to people’s brains.
The brain renewal concept could have applications such as treating stroke (中风) victims, who lose areas of brain function. But Hébert, a biologist at the Albert Einstein school of medicine, has most often proposed total brain replacement, along with replacing other parts of our body, as the only reasonable means of avoiding death from old age.
The idea sounds practical since there are already organ transplants. The trickiest part is your brain. That ages, too, shrinking dramatically in old age. But you don’t want to replace it with another—because it is you.
And that’s where Hébert’s research comes in. He’s been exploring ways to “progressively” replace a brain by adding bits of youthful tissue made in a lab. The process would have to be done slowly enough. in steps, that your brain could adapt, relocating memories and your self-identity.
Hébert has been carrying out initial experiments with mice, removing small sections of their brains and injecting slurries of embryonic cells (胚胎细胞). It’s a step toward proving whether such youthful tissue can survive and take over important functions.
To be sure, the strategy is not widely accepted, even among researchers in the aging field. “On the surface it sounds completely crazy, but I was surprised how good a case he could make for it,” says Matthew Scholz, CEO of aging research company Oisin Biotechnologies, who met with Hébert this year. Scholz is still doubtful though. “A new brain is not going to be a popular item,” he says. “The surgical element of it is going to be very severe, no matter how you slice it” Now, though, Hébert’s ideas appear to have gotten support from the US government.
32. What function does brain replacement perform according to Hébert?
A. Brain replacement helps people fight against death.
B. Brain replacement stops brain shrinking in old age.
C. Brain replacement makes old people much smarter.
D. Brain replacement cures patients suffering a stroke.
33. What does the underlined word “progressively” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Hardly. B. Completely. C. Gradually. D. Immediately.
34. What is the author’s attitude towards Hébert’s ideas?
A. Supportive. B. Objective. C. Critical. D. Doubtful.
35. What can be the suitable title for the text?
A. Replacing Your Brain Little by Little B. Slowing Down Aging in Your Real Life
C. A Biologist Treating Your Brain Disease D. A Researcher Hired by the US Government

Undoubtedly, Mother Nature is always attractive to kids. In our childhood, how often did we turn a deaf ear to our parents’ advice? Very often! Thus, we landed ourselves in a situation where we greatly regretted our act of not having listened to the advice of the wise.
Such an unforgettable experience I had at the age of 7 gave me an invaluable lesson, after which I deeply understood why my gentle mother was repeating the boring suggestions and I would try to take her suggestions seriously.
In my childhood, I was so crazy about nature that even playing among the colorful flowers in our garden could make my day. Our house was next to the woods which had always stirred up(激起) great curiosity in me in wanting to find out what was within. Every time I saw fascinating butterflies dancing from the woods, my curiosity grew.
But my mother didn’t like me wandering off on my own and always ensured that I was within her sight. Even if she allowed me to explore the surrounding area on my own, it was only to be somewhere near the house. Being as curious as the cat, I always desired to explore the woods. It seemed as if my mother had understood my desire, so she had warmed me on lots of occasions never to enter the woods alone.
“Mom, can I go out and play in the garden?” I asked.
“Sure,” she would reply each time. “Kate, you can play in the garden but you must promise me one thing—only when I’m with you can you go into the woods. There are no cases of animal attacks on humans, but it’s still dangerous for a little kid like you. It’s too easy to get lost in the woods.”
“Sure, you’ve said that many times!” I answered without patience at her repeated reminders.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
However, curiosity got the better of me one morning.

Today hotel guests can book a stay in what was part of Williams’s unconventional accommodation.
【答案】24. B 25. C 26. C 27. B

【答案】28. A 29. B 30. D 31. D
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要讲述了将虚拟现实技术应用到课堂的现象,并指出了其中的一些问题。
【28题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“Imagine hopping on a school bus and being transported to an immersive (沉浸式的) educational tour of the inside of the human body—and no, not on a fictional episode of The Magic School Bus. This is the kind of experience that Meta hopes to enable for students, digitally, through its Quest virtual reality (VR) headsets.(想象一下,跳上校车,被带到人体内部的沉浸式教育之旅中——不,不是在《魔法校车》的虚构情节中。这是Meta希望通过其Quest虚拟现实(VR)耳机为学生提供的一种数字体验。)”可知,第一段描述了坐校车参与人体内部的沉浸式教育之旅的奇妙场景,并指出这并不是《魔法校车》的虚构情节,而是Quest虚拟现实(VR)耳机为学生提供的一种数字体验,由此可推测出,作者提到《魔法校车》是为了引出虚拟现实(VR)这个话题。故选A。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“Bring VR into more classrooms could enable new kinds of learning opportunities. For example, it may allow drama students to feel like they’re having an immersive, real-time experience watching Shakespeare’s work performed at the Globe Theatre in the 17 century. 【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“Moreover, the cost of involving VR headsets in the classroom could be an obstacle to adoption for the many schools already struggling with limited resources.(此外,对于许多已经在资源有限的情况下苦苦挣扎的学校来说,在课堂上使用VR耳机的成本可能会成为采用的障碍。)”可知,VR设备的价格高,对财政困难的学校来说是一个沉重的负担。故选D。
【31题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中的““I think that VR is one area where additional research is necessary,” said Vincent Quan, an education researcher and co-executive director of the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab.(Abdul Latif Jameel贫困行动实验室的教育研究员兼联合执行主任Vincent Quan说:“我认为VR是一个需要进一步研究的领域。”)”可知,Vincent Quan建议有必要对VR设备在教育中的运用进行进一步研究。故选D。

【答案】32. A 33. C 34. B 35. A
根据第二段的“But Hébert, a biologist at the Albert Einstein school of medicine, has most often proposed total brain replacement, along with replacing other parts of our body, as the only reasonable means of avoiding death from old age.(但是,作为Albert Einstein医学院的生物学家,Hébert最常提出的建议是,完全替代大脑,以及替换身体的其他部分,这是避免老年死亡的唯一合理方法。)”可知,根据Hébert的说法,大脑替换可以帮助人们对抗死亡。故选A。
【33题详解】
词句猜测题。根据文章第四段“The process would have to be done slowly enough. in steps, that your brain could adapt, relocating memories and your self-identity.(这个过程必须进行得足够缓慢。你的大脑可以逐步适应,重新定位记忆和自我认同。)”可知,这个过程必须足够缓慢,分步骤进行,这样大脑才能适应,重新定位记忆和自我认同,因此“progressively”意为“逐渐地”,和gradually意思相近,故选C。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段的“Scholz is still doubtful though. “A new brain is not going to be a popular item,” he says. “The surgical element of it is going to be very severe, no matter how you slice it” Now, though, Hébert’s ideas appear to have gotten support from the US government.(但Scholz仍持怀疑态度。“一个新的大脑不会是一个受欢迎的东西,”他说。“不管你怎么切,它的外科手术因素将是非常严重的。”不过,现在Hébert的想法似乎得到了美国政府的支持。)”可知,尽管Hébert的想法得到了美国政府的支持,但其他人仍然持怀疑态度,因此作者对于Hébert的想法是客观的,既提到了支持也提到了怀疑,故选B。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第二段“But Hébert, a biologist at the Albert Einstein school of medicine, has most often proposed total brain replacement, along with replacing other parts of our body, as the only reasonable means of avoiding death from old age.(但是,作为Albert Einstein医学院的生物学家,Hébert最常提出的建议是,完全替代大脑,以及替换身体的其他部分,这是避免老年死亡的唯一合理方法。)”和第四段“The process would have to be done slowly enough. in steps, that your brain could adapt, relocating memories and your self-identity.(这个过程必须进行得足够缓慢。你的大脑可以逐步适应,重新定位记忆和自我认同。)”可知,文章主要讲述了Hébert计划通过“功能性脑组织替换”来抗击衰老,即在人们的大脑中添加年轻的组织,并介绍了这项计划的具体实施方法和可能遇到的问题,因此选项A“Replacing Your Brain Little by Little(一点一点地替换你的大脑)”可以概括文章主旨,适合做标题,故选A。

Some are in favor, thinking that intelligent technology, such as smart assistants and online payment, has greatly simplified our daily routines. 67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
However, curiosity got the better of me one morning.

“Kate?” Behind the trees covered by the rays of the setting sun came my mother’s voice.

【答案】参考范文 1
However, curiosity got the better of me one morning. Ignoring my mother’s reminder, I slid into the forbidden world. How fascinating! Among various colorful flowers danced butterflies. With excitement, I chased after the graceful creatures, running deeper into the woods. Suddenly they flew over trees and disappeared. What’s worse, I got lost! I rushed around, crying for help, frightened and helpless, but in vain. I repeated the useless efforts until sunset. “If only I followed Mom’s reminder!” I curled up under a tree, in bitter regret and cried again.
“Kate?” Behind the trees covered by the rays of the setting sun came my mother’s voice. “Mom! I’m here!” Wild with joy, I rushed towards where the voice came from. Behind a tree appeared my mother. She dashed up, hugged me tight and checked whether I got hurt. “I’m so sorry! I should have appreciated your suggestion!” I burst into tears. Wiping tears from my muddy face, she repeated the reminders, which weren’t boring any more, but wise and affectionate, and were implanted in my life forever.
参考范文 2
However, curiosity got the better of me one morning. I summoned up my courage and decided to take a chance. Hardly had I entered the woods when I was totally attracted by the sight. The wandering clouds, the blooming flowers and the vigorous trees all kept me spellbound. At the sight of a beautiful butterfly, I tiptoed along the path, bent over, cupped my hands gently and danced with it down the track. Time flew and before I knew it, I was deep in the woods, unable to find the way out. With a feeling of horror totally holding me in its power, I squatted down under a tree, tears rolling down my cheeks.
“Kate?” Behind the trees covered by the rays of the setting sun came my mother’s voice. Hearing my mom’s voice, I yelled in a quivering tone, rushed towards her direction and threw my arms around her. Noticing my misty eyes, she patted me on the shoulders and checked whether I got hurt. Choked with emotion, I whispered, “I am OK, Mom. I will never go into the woods without your company and permission.” Shooting me an approving look, she added, “Next time you want to come, keep me informed!” In the setting sun, we headed back and this time, I held my mom’s hand tightly.
