Respect often means different things to different people. There are several aspects that many peo-
ple can agree on,though. For example,at its most basic level, respect means being kind and consider-
ate to others.
Respect can take many forms.Don't make fun of others.Put yourself in other people's shoes and
think about how they feel.Remember the Golden Rule:treat others the same way you'd want to be
treated.
如
Respect is important because it sets the proper stage for all our human interactions.Friendship,
love, and even basic communication must all start with respect.
Every one wants to be respected. To get respect, though, you must also show respect to others.
It's always a two-way street. You can't be impolite to others and expect respect in return.
的
It's easy to show respect.Be polite.Look for the best in people rather than concentrating on their
mistakes.Show compassion to others and try to put their interests before your own.Make others com-
fortable when they're uneasy.Help out whenever you can. When you pay it forward, amazing things
can happen.
And be respectful to everyone. The world is an unbelievably huge place filled with billions of peo-
ple, each one of which is unique and special. And they all deserve (your respect
Be careful, though. Not everyone will show you respect all the time.In fact, you'll probably see
examples of impolite behavior each and every day.How you respond to impolite behavior, though, can
make a huge difference.
If you choose to respond to impolite behavior by acting rudely yourself, you've gained nothing.
You've only continued the pattern of impolite behavior and set a bad example.Instead, act respectfully
and set a good example.Consistently acting respectfully might just help others learn from your exam-
ple!

their course selection.
Scholastic Assessment Test(SAT):
It is the most widely administered standardized college entrance exam.SAT test dates are scheduled

Who needs friends?According to most psychologists(心理学家)we all do,especially nowadays
when so many other aspects (of modern life are changing. It seems that having friends keeps us
both healthy and happy.
The number of TV series about groups of friends shows just how important friendship is to us.
Psychologist Dorothy Rowe says that many of us now turn to our friends, instead of our families, for
·18·
advice and comfort. One woman named Rebecca she interviewed even told her that if she had got to
choose between her husband and her friend, she would choose her friend.
Since our friends mean so much to us,it is not surprising that the happiest marriages are also
friendships."Once the romantic stage of a relationship has passed,it is friendship that holds people to-
gether,"says Rowe.If the couple do not make some changes, they will either get tired of each other
and break up or stay together and seek friendship with others.
But is friendship equally important to women and men?According to author Rhonda Pritchard,
women are more likely than men to have close friends."You tell a friend things that you'd never tell a
partner,"says one woman she interviewed. For men, friendship is usually based on doing things to-
gether rather than the private conversations that are typical(有代表性的)of women friends..Men share
time and activities like building a fence or a business, running, riding a bike, fishing or watching foot-
ball, but they don't often share their feelings.
Although many women find their relationships with a husband or boyfriend is not enough, many
men say that their partner is their best friend.Even women who are very happily married are likely to
become very unhappy without a close friend and can even find the breakup of a close friendship as pain-
ful as the end of a marriage.
Lasting friendships can provide a lot of the same support that families provided in the past, but the
perfect situation is to have your family there for you as well.Friendships and family relationships can
both change, but a friend will not consider you when making really important decisions in the same way
that a family member will.
8.What did Rebecca think about friendship?
A.All of us need friendship.
B.Friends are as important as families.
C.One need not have too many friends.
D.Her friend means more to her than her husband.
9.Why do married men or women look for friendship?
A.They are encouraged by their partners.
B.They are not fairly treated by their partners.
C.They do not get what they need from their partners.
D.They think their friends are more romantic.
10.What is the main difference between men's and women's friendship?
A.Women often do things together with friends.
B.Men seldom talk to their friends about their feelings.
C.Women often talk about business with friends.
D.Men often talk to their friends about work and family.
11.What might women do when a close friendship ends?
A.They feel as upset as when a marriage ends.
B.They share feelings with their partners
C.They treat their partners as friends.
D.They turn to their husbands for comfort.

used to give them gifts to thank them, until the pair decided to do something nice for charity."We got
some really great Miami Heat tickets,a nice watch, and many kitchen machines,"said Lanster."But
we wanted to make this something positive for people other than us."
Lanster and Moran focused on Common Threads,a charity(慈善机构)that helps to teach kids in
poor neighborhoods to cook and make healthy eating choices. The young cooks ask their guests to give
however much they want as payment for their meals. It all goes to Common Threads because Lanster's

charity. Now,they're taking their show out of the kitchen and on the road.Lanster and Moran have
started to organize private dinner parties in a similar way:the host pays for the ingredients(),and
the guests make a donation to a charity.
Outside the kitchen, the two are busy preparing their college applications.Neither of them is sure
what they will do in the future, but they've promised their parents that they'll leave cooking alone until

Be a Green Child
What does it mean to be green?"Green"is more than just a color.16 Why green?Plants
are green, and without them the Earth wouldn't be such a lovely home for us human beings.Every
day, people make choices that affect the amount of rubbish and pollution that gets produced in our
world. What can we do?Here's a four-step guide to being green:
·20·
Reduce It!
17 For instance,a shorter shower means you use less water and less fuel since your house
uses fuel to run the water heater that warms up the water.
Reuse It!
Sometimes people call ours a "throwaway society".That means that we're a little too willing to
throw away old stuff (and buy new stuff.18 For instance,if your baby brother outgrows
his plastic basketball hoop ()why not give it to another family who has a little kid?
Recycle It!
Recycling has never been easier. Many communities will pick it up right in front of your house and
some towns even require it.Recycled goods go to a recycling center, where they can be turned into new
cans,bottles,and paper.
Enjoy It!
It's true that rubbish and pollution are problems, but the Earth remains a huge and beautiful place
that's ready for you to explore.19 Go for a hike, visit local nature centers and gardens, and
climb up mountains.
But before you travel the globe, take a look at your own backyard. Is there a spot where you could
plant a tree or put in a little fruit or vegetable garden?20
A.If so,get out there and get your hands dirty.
B.Turn off the water when you're brushing your teeth.
C.It also means taking special steps to protect the environment.
D.When you use less of something, you do a good thing for the Earth.
E.You can start locally by visiting the naturally beautiful spots in your city.
F.Many times, even if you no longer need something, someone else just might.
G.You can watch with pride as your tree takes root and your garden plants grow.

As is known to all,the traffic is very poor and too heavy in India. The bus or the train is really too
crowded.Every time I go home from my company or leave home for my company,I have to accept such
a hard experience, though I have been used to it.
On a cold December morning in 2009,I boarded a bus with my four bags which were large at my
work location ()Luckily,there were two empty seats left.About one hour later,a well-dressed
young man got in and took the seat next to mine.I was cautious().I would often come across
men who were eager to talk to a girl travelling on her own.So I was not surprised when he spoke up.
“Where are you going?”he asked..

"Rampur Bushahr,"I replied briefly and put on my earphones to enjoy some music or to avoid talk-

It started to rain and cold water was dropping through the roof right on to my lap.Seeing that, the
man emptied a plastic shopping bag full of clothes, which he pushed into his travel bag.He then handed
me the plastic bag..I accepted it with a sheepish(困窘的)“thanks'”before spreading it on my lap.
Minutes later, the bus broke down! The conductor(售票员)announced we would have to move to

Reflections on Charles Gary's generous donation
Charles Gary,a professor in an American universi-
ty,donated his long-term savings of about a million
dollars to charity to help the poor survive hunger and
cold. Now he is living in a school dormitory, yet he feels
very happy.
Personally, many people who only care about their
own fortune lack love and kindness, which does no good
to people in the world.Good deeds like what Charles
Gary did which only result from kind people will help
produce more kind hearts. And only if there are more
kind actions from more generous people can a more har-
monious society come true.
To conclude,Charles Gary's good deeds deserve
learning from!
第二节
Paragraph 1:
When the bus finally arrived,it had many passen-
gers already. All the passengers of our own bus moved
hurriedly to get in but I was pushed aside.I was there
worried when I saw a hand waving to me from the en-
答案
trance of the bus.It was the same young man.He stood
just beside the doorway.I passed my four bags to him
and he placed them inside one by one,as if we were fam-
ily travelling together. He then gently helped me in.I
soon got pushed to the middle of the bus.
Paragraph 2:
As the bus left for my hometown,I looked around
for the man.I badly wanted to express my thanks to
him.I knew that he had been right in front but I failed.
He must have got off at an earlier stop without letting
me know.Realizing that he had done a lot for me,I was
very sorry for failing to apologize to him.And I even
forgot to return the plastic bag to him.
