I teach at a university. One of the “problems” is that as the years pass, I get older, but my students remain the same age —18 to 22. Early on, when I was in my 20s and 30s, this wasn’t an issue, as we were close enough in age to speak the same language. But lately I have become well aware that a language ship seems to have sailed (启航),and I am not on board (上船).
Let me make it clear by using an example: Recently, when I walked into my class, my students were chatting happily with each other. One of their comments caught my ear: “Venmo it to me.” I had no idea what “Venmo” meant, so I asked. The good-natured students were happy to explain it to me, and in return I nodded with an embarrassed expression, as if I should have known better.
I went home that evening, absorbed in that moment of incomprehension (不理解). I am not against change, but I am uncomfortable with the language change when it changes fast. If I were to awake from a five-year nap, I’d have no idea what people were talking about. I just wouldn’t understand the language.
Their willingness to explain their words to me is a great comfort, and I congratulate myself on at least having interest in what they’re talking about, as well as on my ability — for the most part — to understand their explanations.
But what will happen if my interest wanes and the language ship finally disappears over the horizon?
24. What did the author probably meet with?
A. Hearing loss. B. Culture shock. C. A language barrier. D. A teaching problem.
25. What makes the author fall behind (落后,掉队) in language?
A. Learning needs. B. Teaching tasks. C. Age difference. D. Language abuse.
26. What does the author think of language change?
A. It is completely avoidable. B. It is really small.
C. It is very beneficial. D. It changes fast.
27. What does the underlined word “wanes” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Reduces. B. Grows. C. Happens. D. Focuses.

During the winter of 2014, I relocated back to Boston. Having experienced trouble in a neighboring state, I left there quickly and contacted some friends. They invited me to go and stay with them as long as I needed. The shelter (庇护所) they provided was the end of an 18-month suffering.
That winter, we had a bad snowstorm. There were two feet of snow and ice on top of my car. When I started to shovel (铲) it, my snow shovel broke. I would use my ice scraper (刮刀) to clear the snow off the car before returning to my friends’ apartment and borrowing a shovel.
Suddenly, a young man ran out of a neighboring house with a shovel. Smiling, I thanked him and reached for it. He smiled back and said, “I’ll do it for you, ma’ am.” Then he did the heavy shoveling while I cleaned the snow off my car. Together, we got my car out of the snow bank.
He was just happy to help me out, which made my day, especially after my bad experience. I think I had unknowingly given up on people after my heartache. After his random act of kindness, my world was brighter, and I could smile more.
I am doing much better now. I no longer live in Boston, but have a strong bond with it. In some respects, I was reborn there. Because of the difficulties I went through, I don’t think I can live a normal life again. But when I get down or things get hard, I think about what that young man and that group of friends did for me. It reminds me that there are many wonderful and selfless people on this planet. A few minutes of shoveling helped me connect again to the possibility of innocent acts of kindness.
28. How did the author feel before returning to Boston?
A. Surprised. B. Bored. C. Heartbroken. D. Satisfied.
29. What did the young man do to help the author?
A. He gave her a shelter. B. He lent a scraper to her.
C. He started the car for her. D. He shoveled the snow off.
30. What happened to the author after the young man’s help?
A. She suffered heartache. B. She got her hope back.
C. She remembered her past. D. She put kindness into practice.
31. What do the young man and the friends mean to the author?
A. The pain in Boston. B. The source of wealth.
C. Her spiritual support. D. Her former memories.

Millions of Englishmen have stopped saying “thank you” and now say “cheers”. Although the average person will say “thank you” nearly 5,000 times a year, one in three tends to say “cheers” or “ta” instead. They think “thank you” is not in fashion. One in 20 now says “nice one”, while the younger generation are more likely to use “cool”. “Merci”, “fab” and even “gracias” were also listed as common expressions of appreciation.
Nick Thorogood, Professional Managing Director of Food Network UK, said: “When it comes to saying ‘thank you’, people will always find the best way to express thanks that fits them best. It’s actually quite interesting to see what ‘thank you’ means to different people. Also, a quarter of us show thanks through delicious food—which shows that taking time and making an effort to say ‘thank you’ still has a positive effect on us.”
However, it seems that sometimes displays of good manners are just surface-level. A huge 70 percent of those questioned admit they will say “thank you” to a person’s face without really meaning it. Half of the people questioned admit it is unnecessary to thank those closest to them, because they assume their family already recognize their thanks.
People choose SMS (short message service) to express thanks. A thank-you e-mail is also popular, while a quarter turn to social media to express thanks. A quarter of Englishmen say “thank you” with food, with 23 percent cooking a meal to show their appreciation to someone. Another 15 percent bake a cake. A third will still send a handwritten thank-you note—but 45 percent admit it’s been more than six months since they bothered to send one.
32. Why do many Englishmen stop using “thank you”?
A. They are afraid of causing panic. B. They think it is not in fashion.
C. They think it unnecessary. D. They don’t think it can impress others.
33. What can we learn from Nick Thorogood’s words?
A. People in Britain don’t say “thank you” anymore now.
B. Most people in Britain say “thank you” only at meal time.
C. Half of Englishmen say “cheers” through food.
D. It’s positive to express thanks to others.
34. Which of the following is the main way people choose to express thanks?
A. Sending handwritten notes. B. Using social media.
C. Sending text messages. D. Cooking a special meal.
35. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The younger generation in the UK prefers to use “cool” to express thanks.
B. It introduces the various ways English people express thanks.
C. The decline of traditional phrases of saying thanks.
D. People like to show thanks through delicious food with a positive effect.

W: As a child, I was given a boy’s name, Te-Ping Chen. My parents wanted to honor their grandfather, so they named me after him. Growing up in California. I learned to hate self-introduction, because so few people could ever pronounce my name. They’d say Tee-ping or Tuh-ping. My face would burn, and I’d feel uncomfortable. For years, my name has made me feel embarrassed. In Chinese, the name sounds gently pleasant. The Te means virtue. Ping means peace. But in English, the letters looked awkward and off-balance to me. But my parents were proud of the name, proud of what it stood for. They were Americans, but they hadn’t thrown away their tradition. Why would they choose that name instead of a Jessica or a Molly? I understand now. We name ourselves to honor our ancestor who brought us to America. It’s a name that has made me think hard about identity. In that way, it has helped make me who I am. I had a kid recently, and we also gave him a Chinese name. His name means joy. There’s strength in saying that, you’re here and we’re here. This is where we come from, and these are our names. So we should be proud of our names.

A. Reduces. B. Grows. C. Happens. D. Focuses.
C 25. C 26. D 27. A

根据第一段中的“One of the “problems” is that as the years pass, I get older, but my students remain the same age —18 to 22. Early on, when I was in my 20s and 30s, this wasn’t an issue, as we were close enough in age to speak the same language. But lately I have become well aware that a language ship seems to have sailed (启航),and I am not on board (上船).(其中一个“问题”是:随着岁月流逝,我在变老,但我的学生年龄却始终不变——18到22岁。 早些年,我二三十岁的时候,这还不是问题,因为我们年龄相近,能聊到一块儿去。 但最近我清楚地意识到,一艘语言之船似乎已经开走了,而我没能上船)”可知,是年龄差异导致作者在语言上落后。故选C项。

B 33. D 34. C 35. B
They think “thank you” is not in fashion.(他们认为“thank you”已经不流行了)可知,许多英国人不再使用“thank you”是因为觉得它过时了。
根据第二段中的“Also, a quarter of us show thanks through delicious food—which shows that taking time and making an effort to say ‘thank you’ still has a positive effect on us.(此外,四分之一的人通过美味的食物来表达感谢——这表明花时间、用心说‘谢谢’仍然会对我们产生积极的影响)”可知,Nick Thorogood的话表明向他人表达感谢是积极的。
“Merci”, “fab” and even “gracias” were also listed as common expressions of appreciation.(数百万英国人不再说“谢谢”,如今都改口说“干杯”了。

根据上文“Lifelong learning is the idea that learning keeps going through our daily experiences throughout our lives. It can be quite useful to us. However, to form a habit of lifelong learning is not easy. We need to train our brain to develop lifelong learning.(终身学习是指学习贯穿于我们的日常生活中。它对我们很有用。然而,养成终身学习的习惯并不容易。我们需要训练我们的大脑来发展终身学习)”可知,终身学习很有用,因此接下来要介绍一些可以帮助养成终身学习的习惯的方法。故F项“这里有一些简单的方法可以帮助你”能够承上启下,符合语境。故选F。
【37题详解】
根据上文“That may sound funny.(这听起来有点滑稽)”以及下文“For example, maybe your aim is to reduce your stress levels or find different ways to relax. Having an aim not only makes the learning beneficial but gives it a purpose.(例如,也许你的目标是减少你的压力水平或找到不同的放松方式。有一个目标不仅使学习有益,而且给它一个目的)”可知,本段的建议是为学习创设一个目标,本句与上文构成转折,指出有目标的作用。故C项“但是心中有一个目标确实很有帮助”符合语境。故选C。
【38题详解】
空处为段落小标题。根据下文“After you have made that small habit into place, you can then add to it.(当你养成了这个小习惯之后,你就可以添加它了)”可知,本段主要讲述要从小事开始坚持终身学习。 故选A。
根据下文“For example, instead of struggling to read 100 pages in a book very day, why not start with 15 minutes, two or three time a week? After you have made that small habit into place, you can then add to it.(例如,与其每天努力读100页书,为什么不从每周读两三次,每次15分钟开始呢?当你养成了这个小习惯之后,你就可以添加它了)”可知,空处表达观点是要把学习分解成小块。故G项“把学习分解成小块会有帮助”符合语境。故选G。
【40题详解】
根据段落小标题“Make it fun.(使它有趣)”以及后文“ the act of doing it obviously decreases. Have some fun with your learning. For example, for every new learning opportunity you take, give yourself some reward. Give yourself a gold star. Make learning a game. Whatever is going to make learning fun for you, make sure that you experience the fun!(这样做的行为明显减少。

A man on a rafting (竹筏漂流) trip in Saskatchewan saved a coyote pup (郊狼幼仔) from drowning (淹死) and nursed (照顾) it back to health during his 10-day outdoor trip.
While he was fishing, he heard something in the water crying out and he saw some kind of animal swimming in the river! It was a coyote pup! When Justin brought the animal back to his raft, the little coyote pup didn’t seem to be breathing, with its eyes closed. The pup was lucky yet again as Justin had first-aid knowledge and was able to do a Heimlich (海姆立克急救法) treatment by pushing on its stomach. After a few pushes, water came out of the coyote’s nose and he was breathing again! They made an effort to reach land (上岸) again where Justin made a fire and tried to warm the little guy up.
注意:1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
Para 1:
Justin shortened the trip (缩短行程) in order to take care of the pup well.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Para 2:
Finally, Justin was able to find a place where he could get service and call experts for advice.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 Para 1: Justin shortened the trip (缩短行程) in order to take care of the pup well. He kept the coyote with him and cared for him the whole time! The little pup would eat with Justin, stay in his jacket, and sleep in his backpack while they were rafting down the river. Justin ended up naming the little guy YipYip and took really good care of him during the trip.
Para 2: Finally, Justin was able to find a place where he could get service and call experts for advice. At first, he emailed the local zoo. A staff there helped him connect with the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. One of the medical care workers, Melanie got in touch with Justin and took YipYip back to the center for further treatment. YipYip will be taken care of in the center until he is old enough to be returned to the wild! One month later Justin went to the center to see YipYip. The little coyote ran to him the moment he saw Justin. He was so happy to meet Justin and maybe he did know how lucky he was! If it hadn’t been for the caring Justin, little YipYip would have drowned in the river.
