The pace of today's working life blurs (the line between personal time and
work time, and it increasingly mixes personal lifestyle and work style. And as companies are
trying hard to attract and keep young people for their technical skills and enthusiasm for
change, office culture is becoming an extension of youth culture. This may not be a bad
thing. For most of human history the middle-aged have ruled, but in the future, they will
have to share power with fresh-faced youths.
There have been a number of reasons for this change and the most dramatic of these is
technology.Children have always been more expert than their parents at something, but
usually a game or a fashion, not the century's most important business tool. The Internet
has started the first industrial revolution in history to be led by the young.Though there
have been youth revolutions before, none of them made a big change the way the Internet
has.Throughout the 20th century,if a young person wanted to enter an American company
they needed to leave their youth behind. They got a haircut, and probably a suit or at least a
tie.Now the same hair, same clothes, even nearly the same hours apply to office and home.
If it had not been for the Internet, this change could not have happened. However,it
did not happen because of the Internet only;the corporate restructurings(公司重组)of the
l980sand90 s broke down traditional hierarchies(等级制度).In many companies,seniori-
ty-based(基于资历的)hierarchies have been replaced by hierarchies based on perform
ance. The abilities to please your superiors are no longer the most valued skills.Today's
employees stay with companies only as long as they feel challenged and rewarded;moving
from a job to another job is now a sign of ambition.
The rise of the young is a good thing, because it gives them more opportunity to put
their ideas and energy into practice at their most creative stage in life.Nowadays youth and
youth qualities seem to dominate, but the experience and maturity of older employees
should be put to good use, too.
4.In the 20th century,to enter an American company,a young person needed to
A.work in the office and at home
B.have an eye-catching hairstyle
C.dress in the business style
D.leave the business tool behind

7.What can be inferred from the passage?
A.Young people will lead in fashion.
B.Young people will have more power.
C.Older people will step off the historical stage.
D.Older people will continue to be the main force.
C
The elderly residents (in care homes in London are being given hens to look af-
ter to stop them feeling lonely.
The project was dreamed up by a local charity(慈善组织)to reduce loneliness and im
prove elderly people's wellbeing. It is also being used to help patients suffering dementia,a
serious illness of the mind.Staff in care homes have reported a reduction in the use of med-
icine where hens are in use.
Among those taking part in the project is 80-year-old Ruth Xavier. She said:"I used
to keep hens when I was younger and had to prepare their breakfast each morning before I
went to school..”
"I like the project a lot.I am down there in my wheelchair in the morning letting the
hens out and down there again at night to see they've gone to bed."
"It's good to have a different focus.People have been bringing their children in to see
the hens and residents come and sit outside to watch them.I'm enjoying the creative activi-
ties, and it feels great to have done something useful."
There are now 700 elderly people looking after hens in 20 care homes in the North
East, and the charity has been given financial support to roll it out countrywide.
Wendy Wilson, extra care manager at 60 Penfold Street, one of the first to embark on
the project, said:"Residents really welcome the idea of the project and the creative ses-
sions. We are looking forward to the benefits and fun the project can bring to people here.
Lynn Lewis, director of Notting Hill Pathways, said:"We are happy to be taking part
in the project. It will really help connect our residents through a shared interest and crea-
tive activities..”

Concrete is the world's most consumed material after water.Because it already sur-
rounds us in the built environment, researchers have been exploring the idea of using con-
crete to store electricity-turning buildings into giant batteries. The idea has been gaining
ground as we have come to increasingly rely on renewable energy from the wind and sun:
rechargeable batteries are necessary when the breeze dies down or darkness falls.
Experimental concrete batteries have only managed to hold a small part of what a tra-
ditional battery does. But one team now reports in Buildings that it has developed a re-
chargeable original model that could represent a more than 900 percent increase in stored
charge,compared with earlier attempts.
A live-in concrete battery might sound unlikely.Still,"you can make a battery out of a
potato,"notes Aimee Byrne. In a future where sustainability is key,she likes the idea of
buildings that avoid waste by providing shelter and powering electronics.
Although the new design stores more than 10 times as much power as earlier at-
tempts,it still has a long way to go:200 square metres of it"can provide about 8 percent of
the daily electricity consumption"of a typical U.S.home,Zhang says.
This is not enough to compete with today's rechargeable devices."We're getting milli-
amps(毫安)out of concrete batteries-we're not getting amps(安培),”Byrne says..
"We're getting hours as opposed to days of charge."But she adds that "concrete batteries
are completely in their childhood, compared to other battery designs."The earliest batter-
ies were simple and bulky.Researchers experimented with new materials and designs for
more than a century to develop today's small devices.Byrne suggests concrete-based energy
storage could undergo a similar evolution."The whole idea is that we're looking far into the
future,”she says.“We're playing the long game with it.”
12.What can we learn about the concrete batteries?
A.They become increasingly renewable.
B.They are the most consumed batteries.
C.They are being developed by researchers.
D.They will replace energy from the wind and sun.
UNIT12·B卷第4页(共8页)

B.To argue it is possible to develop concrete batteries.

Fitness Magazine recently ran an article titled "Five Reasons to Thank Your Workout
Partner."One reason was:"You'll actually show up if you know someone is waiting for you at the
gym,"while another read:"16 "With a workout partner, you will increase your training effort
as there is a subtle(微妙)competition.
So,how do you find a workout partner?
First of all, decide what you want from that person.17 Or do you just want to be
physically fit, able to move with strength and flexibility?Think about the exercises you
would like to do with your workout partner.
You might think about posting what you are looking for on social media, but it proba-
bly won't result in a useful response.18 If you plan on working out in a gym, that
person must belong to the same gym.
My partner posted her request on the notice board of a local park. Her notice included
what kind of training she wanted to do,how many days a week and how many hours she
wanted to spend on each session, and her age.It also listed her favorite sports and activi-
ties,and provided her phone number.19
You and your partner will probably have different skills.20 Over time, both of you
will benefit-your partner will be able to lift more weights and you will become more physi-
cally fit.The core()of your relationship is that you will always be there to help each
other.
A.Your first meeting may be a little awkward.
B.A workout partner usually needs to live close by.
C.You'll work harder if you train with someone else.
D.Do you want to be a better athlete in your favorite sport?
E.How can you write a good "seeking training partner"notice?
F.Just accept your differences and learn to work with each other.
G.Any notice for a training partner should include such information.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My husband and I went to McDonald's for a hamburger. As we went in,there was a
woman begging at the door with a young boy about two years old.I sat and watched him
from inside McDonald's.He was only about two feet tall and of very fine build, with a head
that seemed perfectly round, with short black hair. His face was dirty, but his smile shone
brightly.
The more I watched the little boy,the more I was drawn to him.He was playing with a
stick (almost as long as he was tall)on the front step.As people left McDonald's,if he was not
too enraptured (in playing with his stick,he would flash a smile and hold his hand
out for money. You could tell he did not care if he got it or not-he was just trying to help
his mother out,who was doing the real begging.
I became interested in watching him.He was simply the epitome (of freedom,
joy and childhood innocence.I decided that I wanted to do something for him,but I was
努
not sure what to do.It was then that I focused on his toy,the tiny dirty stick. In the imag-
ination of a child,at one moment it was a sword,then a cane,then a pointer,and then a
donkey.Suddenly,it occurred to me that McDonald's always had toys for children! That
would be the gift that I would get for him,a McHappy meal with a toy.So I went to get a
McHappy meal and made my way to the door, almost feeling guilty as I interrupted his pla-
ying with his stick.I handed him the food, which he was hesitant to take, but I smiled and
he beamed(眉开眼笑)his smile at me(frankly, this smile alone made it worthwhile).
些
Then I handed him the toy, which he really did not think could have been for him.He
grabbed the bag excitedly and ran across the step to his mother,"Mama,Mama,Mama!"
注意:1.续写的词数应为150左右。
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
I went back inside and finished my meal.
As my husband and I left McDonals's,I saw the boy near the corner of the step.
