There are times in life when we don’t have the energy to get through our problems or the strength to push ahead. That’s when our friends carry us. They remind us that we are not alone — they stand with and comfort us. Even when some friends don’t always know how best to help, they want to be there for us.
Author Parker J. Palmer in his book, Let Your Life Speak, shares about the time he was battling depression (抑郁). He recalls that some people who visited him tried to cheer him up. “It’s a beautiful day. Why don’t you go out and soak up some sunshine and look at the flowers?” Although he understood their purpose, it made him more depressed. Others reminded him that he was a teacher and writer who had helped so many people. “Try to remember all the good you’ve done and surely you’ll feel better.” That advice, too, left him depressed.
Then there were those who had the courage to stand with him in simple and healing ways. One was a guy named Bill who asked Parker’s permission to visit him in the afternoons. Bill would sit Parker in the chair, kneel in front of him, remove his shoes and socks and for half an hour, massage (按摩) his feet. Bill had found the only place in Parker’s body where he could still experience feelings and reconnect with the human race. Bill would simply do this and say very little. When he talked, he would not give advice but mirror Parker’s feelings. This simple act of care was what carried Parker through his dark time.
We are thankful for the friends who sit with us in easy and healing ways. And we are thankful for the opportunity to be that friend, to offer our presence to those who are hurting, sick, battling depression, suffering great pain and more. May the pathways of love, patience and kindness lead us to friends who are suffering. And once there, even if we are unsure of what to do, we can simply be present.
4. According to paragraph 2, how did Parker find his friends’ ways to cheer him up?
A. Nice but unhelpful. B. Warm but old-fashioned.
C. Simple but creative. D. Kind but unimaginative.
5. What effect did Bill’s massage have on Parker?
A. It reduced his physical pain. B. It encouraged him to take advice.
C. It helped him reconnect with the world. D. It gave him professional medical care.
6. What does the author suggest we do to help our friends?
A. Be thankful to them. B. Keep them company.
C. Be quick to respond. D. Offer practical advice.
7. Which of the following is the most suitable title for the text?
A. How to Win over People and Make Friends
B. The Benefit of Friendships in Battling Depression
C. The Great Power of Simply Being Present for a Friend
D. Why Friends can Carry You Through Your Darkest Times
C
The number of pandas, which once were an endangered species, has grown continuously in recent years, partly thanks to the introduction of the special pandas born in captivity (圈养) but trained from birth to return to nature.
The first stage of the training begins in the first year of life in an area of around 2,000 square meters. This allows experts to monitor them more easily and minimize the damage they may suffer. During this period, the baby pandas learn to find water sources, something necessary for their survival. In the second stage, once they turn one year old, their diet changes and in addition to mother’s milk they need bamboo. They will learn to find bamboo, how to stay away from their natural enemies and how to seek shelter to avoid danger. In this second stage, the area in which they move enlarges to over 20 thousand square meters, a surface similar to that of the habitat in which they find themselves when they live in the wild.
After those training and final physical examinations, captive pandas are well-prepared to explore the wild world. When they go back to the wild, they wear collars (颈圈) to provide a helpful tracking sign to inform the wildlife protection experts. Mu Shijie is one of these experts who is backed by a giant panda monitoring “dream team”, whose daily duty is to monitor the wild giant pandas in the nature reserve as well as the captive giant pandas after being set free.
The World Wide Fund for Nature said in a statement that there was a “promising trend” in the wild population of pandas and that rewilding could help deal with the risk of inbreeding (近亲繁殖). “After decades of work, it is clear that the future of pandas and their forest home depends on more effective measures, especially with the increasing effect of climate change.” a spokesperson said.
8. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A. The benefits of training.
B. The process of training.
C. The challenges of training.
D. The importance of training.
9. Why do the captive pandas wear collars when they go back to the wild?
A. To aid experts in following the pandas’ trace.
B. To help pandas adapt to the wild world easily.
C. To enable pandas to recognize each other quickly.
D. To protect pandas from hunters and natural enemies.
10. What does the underlined word “backed” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Observed. B. Supported.
C. Affected. D. Promoted.
11. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Greater efforts should be made to protect pandas.
B. The population of the captive giant pandas is mounting.
C. The risk of inbreeding can be totally avoided by rewilding.
D. A World Wide Fund for Nature will be established to preserve pandas.
D
A team of scientists is studying the sound of the forest in Ecuador to learn how artificial intelligence (AI) could follow animal life in recovering environments.
When scientists want to measure new forest growth, they can study large areas of land with tools like satellites. But understanding how fast and in what number wildlife is returning to an area is more difficult. Sometimes it requires an expert to listen through sound recordings and pick out animal calls.
Jorg Muller, an expert on birds, wondered if there was a different way. So, he turned to bioacoustics (生物声学), which uses sound to learn more about animal life and their living environments. Muller and his team recorded wildlife sounds in Ecuador. They first had experts listen to the recordings and list the sounds of different animals. Then, they examined the sound quality to measure the environment. Finally, they ran two weeks of recordings through an AI computer program trained to understand 75 different bird calls.
The program was able to pick out the calls on which it was trained. However, scientists wondered if the program could correctly identify the number of different kinds of plants and animals in each environment. To see if the program could do that, the team used two different controls. One was from the experts who listened to the recordings, and the second was based on examples from each environment, which can be used to understand biodiversity (生物多样性).
Since the number of sounds that are found to be used to train is limited, the AI program could only identify one-fourth of the bird calls experts could. But it was still able to correctly measure biodiversity levels in each environment, the study said. It also said the results show the AI program is a powerful tool to measure the recovery of animal societies in some forests. The study showed that biodiversity found from recordings can be measured in a cost-effective and complete way and measure environments.
There are still areas for improvement, including the lack of animal sounds on which to train AI models. And the method can only catch animals that use sound to communicate.
12. What does the study focus on?
A. Studying plant growth. B. Observing birds’ behavior.
C. Understanding AI’s effect on wildlife. D. Measuring wildlife recovery.
13. What method did the team use to learn wildlife sounds in Eduador?
A. Bioacoustics. B. Satellite recording.
C. Sound recording by AI. D. Direct observation by experts.
14. What did the AI program prove to be useful for?
A. Identifying plant species. B. Tracking weather change.
C. Measuring biodiversity levels. D. Identifying all the bird calls.
15. What did the study suggest for improvements?
A. Measuring more bird environments.
B. Catching animals that use sound to communicate.
C. Training the program on a wider variety of sounds.
D. Having experts study more and understand bird calls.

【56题答案】
【答案】Dear fellow students,
To make our ten-minute break more colorful and meaningful, the Students’ Union is launching the “Active Ten-Minute Break” activity. We strongly recommend you to take a short walk during the break.
A short walk is easy and safe. It can relax our eyes and brains after long-time study. Besides it helps us keep energetic and focused in the next class. It also builds up our body little by little.
We hope everyone can take up this simple sport and enjoy a healthier and more lively school life.

【答案】
The viewing party finally came, and Alex was eager to meet his online friend. As the sky darkened, he nervously scanned the crowd, hoping to spot someone familiar. Suddenly, a voice called out, “Hi, Alex!” It was StarGazer123, who turned out to be his classmate, Lisa, a girl he had barely spoken to before. Alex was shocked but delighted. Lisa explained that she had always admired his astronomy knowledge, which was why she had reached out online. She added that she believed they could be great friends, which made Alex feel warm inside.
