M: On Weibo? No thanks. I prefer the old-fashioned TV news.
W: Really? Why?
M: I just think it’s more balanced. It’s all too easy to get into an “information cocoon” online.

M: Exactly. Social media programs present you with information they think you’ll like. In terms of the news, that means you won’t often see stories that disagree with what you already believe.
W: Right, I see. And that’s why it’s called a “cocoon”, because it’s like hiding yourself away in a soft, comfortable place.
M: Exactly!
W: I see. That’s a good point!

W: Wow That’s so much longer than I’ve known you guys. So, you’ve been friends for 25 years?
M: Yeah! We left home together and even went to the same college. He has always been there for me. But ever since he was laid off from his previous job three months ago, he has become so negative. It seems he has lost all his passion for things he ever loved.
W: Hmm… That’s terrible.
M: It’s really getting me down. My sister, Clara, says I should start avoiding him, but I’d feel awful about doing that.
W: No, you can’t do that. It’s hard to be around someone who is negative. But he’s your friend. You could take him into nature to help him get rid of his negative feelings. And you can hang around with other friends who make you happy sometimes.
M: Like you! Thanks, Jenny.

It’s a funny, heartwarming story of a group of theater-loving women who decide to perform an all-female version of William Shakespeare’s play, while all the men are away fighting in World War II. We’ll be looking for six girls to play the female parts, ranging from young women to old ladies. There are also a couple of male parts: Alexander Ford, the young stage manager, and Mr. White, the old theater owner who constantly makes trouble for our heroines on purpose! The original play was set in the U.S. , but our writers decided to move the action to Australia, so we could use our own accents. There are passages of Shakespeare throughout the play, for which we’ll use British accents. Tryouts are on Friday. You’ll be asked to read a scene from the play, as well as perform a short Shakespeare speech. You won’t need to sing at the tryouts, but please be aware that there is a small amount of singing required in the show. I hope to see you all there!

My father, then an income tax officer, began studying law in the last decade of his service. It was extremely difficult for him to manage work, take care of his family and study for law — a three-year course — for which he would attend college in the evenings and take regular exams, at the same time. His colleagues would discourage him with the logic,“Why do you need this? As a government employee, you will receive a life-long pension (退休金).” Others would say,“If you make it, you know there’s no advantage; but if you fail, you become the laughing stock in the department.” Unswerving (坚定的), he kept at it.
And so, the law exams posed no challenge for him. Neither did the bar exam that followed. After retiring, he immediately took up work at a law firm specializing in income tax. From here, he retired after 25 years of distinguished service at the age of 84. In this second career, he held a unique record of not having lost a single case there.
His contribution hit me only a couple of years ago when I’d accompanied him to an ex-colleague’s son’s wedding. All his past clients were there. They crowded around my 85-year-old father as though he was a film star! They were pleading with him to return or at least to take up their cases part-time from home. This was the perfect example of “brand aura(气质)” that Harvard professors would theorize about in their lectures.
That is the power of knowledge. And there’s no age limit to acquiring it. All you need is to be devoted and sincere in your pursuit of it. I’m sharing this so that each one of you can feel as inspired as I have been. Gather the courage to learn and keep growing. It will always give you the best returns over time.

C
We want to be happy and satisfied forever and we want to be able to live our lives without worries. This search for harmony, inner peace, and self-realization is practically the same in all the different methods of representing human needs.
From our experience, we know that wherever we are or whatever we do certain rules exist. On the roads there are traffic rules, in football there are the rules of the game, and in nature there are the natural laws. For those who respect these rules, the corresponding (相应的) activities or deeds are easier to accomplish.
We have got to know the most important rule on the earth which all the earth’s inhabitants must follow. This rule says: Every being has an equal right to live here, to develop here and to carry out his tasks here. Because of its importance for everything on the earth, we call this rule the basic rights of existence. Based on several examples and comparisons from our everyday life, we have seen that harmony and peace can only come into our lives if we respect this foundation of existence.
The more single-mindedly a person follows this rule in all his decision-making, the closer he gets to his goal of inner peace and harmony. From this point of view, our life is nothing other than a training camp for the acquisition of the missing characteristics and abilities which we require for continuously respecting the basic rights of existence.
Our subconscious (潜意识) helps us with subjective perception: the activation (激活) of our goals, and additional mechanisms permit us to interpret things so that we can efficiently train for the goals mentioned previously. We develop our awareness and accept the full responsibility for our life. This is our personal path to harmony and inner peace.
For most human beings, respecting the basic rights of existence can cause a far-reaching change in their system of personal values. It encourages each individual who searches for the meaning of life to translate these ideas into action.
28. Who does the author think can reach their destination more easily?
A. Busy drivers. B. Traffic-rule makers.
C. Hurrying cyclists. D. Traffic-law observers.
29. What does the underlined word “single-mindedly” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. Unwillingly. B. Hesitantly. C. Determinedly. D. Liberatedly.
30. What is paragraph 5 mainly about?
A. How to accept responsibilities fully.
B. How to achieve our goals properly.
C. How to train ourselves efficiently.
D. How to interpret things subjectively.
31. What is the meaning of life based on?
A. The basic rights of existence.
B. The ignorance of natural laws.
C. The translation of human ideas.
D. The change of our personal path.
【答案】28. D 29. C 30. B 31. A

This is our personal path to harmony and inner peace.(我们的潜意识通过主观感知帮助我们:激活我们的目标,而额外的机制允许我们解读事物,以便我们能够有效地为前面提到的目标进行训练。我们提升自己的意识,并为自己的生活承担全部责任。这是我们通往和谐与内心平静的个人途径。)”可知,第五段主要围绕“如何正确实现我们的目标”展开,讲述了实现目标、通往内心和谐的具体方式。故选B。

Nature has long been good for us. But most of environmental psychologists’ work has focused on green space — parks, forests, and the like. Now, a more recent wave of researchers is turning their attention to far bluer places.
In 2010, Mat White, an environmental psychologist, and his colleagues discovered that people tended to rate photos of natural and urban environments as being more restorative when they had some sort of water element. This study, since cited over thousands of times, helped kick off the blue space research movement of today. So, what actually happens in your body and brain when you spend time at the beach?
White and his colleagues analyzed data from 4,255 respondents in England to see which natural environments is more mentally relaxing. The coast rated slightly higher than woodlands and mountainous landscapes.
What makes beaches particularly good for resting the overworked mind? Catherine Kelly, a cold-water swimming enthusiast, suspects it has to do with their scale: their expansive views that seem never to end. “When we visit the coast, we’ll feel a sense of awe (敬畏), where we get perspective on our problems and feel part of something bigger than ourselves,” she said. The emotion is known to reduce stress, engage a sense of purpose, and push us to act more selflessly.
Besides, there is evidence that looking at waves lapping on a beach is associated with changes in our own brain waves, promoting alpha frequencies (频率) that indicate relaxation.
Another research suggests that people tend to exercise for longer when sweating in the so-called“blue gym” than in green spaces — potentially because they perceive time as being more expansive when they’ re by the water. This prolonged physical activity may go on to improve sleep.
The ongoing researches into the sea can be used to advocate for protecting coastal landscapes around the world. “That reciprocity (相互性) is really important,” Kelly says. “If we have a place that makes us feel well, then surely it’s our job to make sure it feels well too. ”
32. What can we learn about the 2010 research?
A. It launched the space exploration.
B. It advocated protecting the ocean.
C. It offered a quite new perspective.
D. It analysed the effect of beach sport.
33. Which aspect of the sea relaxes our mind according to Catherine Kelly?
A. Its wilderness. B. Its vast expanse.
C. Its fresh air. D. Its pain-easing power.
34. How does the ocean influence the visitors?
A. It sharpens their sense of sight.
B. It transforms their brain waves.
C. It adjusts their biological clock.
D. It reminds them of time passing.
35. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The coast is a place of healing
B. The ocean protection matters
C. Exercise is beneficial to health
D. Nature can restore itself fully
【答案】32. C 33. B 34. B 35. A

Family Love
“What are you writing?”
Sighing, I shut my notebook. My sister Bethany is always poking her nose into my business. “Nothing,” I replied. I didn’t tell her I was entering a writing competition in case I didn’t win. Bethany is always winning at her dancing competitions, Mum has lots of bowling trophies (奖杯), and Dad is the top player at his golf club. I started ballet lessons when I was younger, but I was always facing the wrong way and bumping into everyone. I’m even worse at sport.
But I do love English at school, especially writing stories. Miss Mackinnon is my favorite teacher and she suggested I enter this competition. I felt a warm glow when she said she thought my stories were excellent.
“Is it your secret diary?”Bethany yawned, opening the fridge. Mum arrived, loaded with shopping bags. “Who’s keeping a secret diary?” “Nobody. I’m keeping a notebook as I want to be a writer,” I said, annoyed.
Bethany snorted (哼), “Now she thinks she’s going to be the next Agatha Christie.” “Our Maisie will be a famous writer. All her teachers praise her composition,” Mum defended me.
“Miss Mackinnon says I should write about what I know, so you’d better watch out,” It old Bethany darkly. Bethany took a yoghurt from the fridge and went upstairs and yelled, “I don’t want to be in your stupid story!” “Ignore her,” Mum said. “Keep going with your story.”
Weeks passed, and the memory of the competition slowly faded beneath the busy everyday life. Then one afternoon, as I was lazily scrolling through my e-mails, a notification (通知) from the competition organizers suddenly appeared.

【答案】范文
I clicked the email with trembling fingers, my heart racing. Taking a deep breath, I moved down the page. When the words “Congratulations! You’ve won the first prize” popped up, I gasped, excitement surging through my chest and tears blurring my eyes — all the late nights, the self-doubt disappeared in an instant. Instead, Miss Mackinnon’s encouraging smile flashed in my mind, pride welling up inside me. I realized my love for writing had finally paid off. Immersed in my delight, suddenly I heard Bethany’s footsteps echoing on the stairs.
Before I could fully process the news, Bethany patted me gently from behind. She leaned closer, her voice softer than usual: “You won, didn’t you?” Bethany, who never missed a chance to laugh at me, was nodding to me with something like admiration. “Yes, I won the writing competition,” I said proudly. Then, to my surprise, a genuine smile spread across her face. At dinner, Bethany whispered, “Maybe you could write about a dancer sister someday.” We both laughed, the old tension melting away in the presence of family love.

A. Promising firmly. B. Inviting sincerely.
C. Allowing politely. D. Reminding gently.
27. What lesson can we learn from the text?
A. A“brand aura” helps gain popularity and trust.
B. People should never be satisfied with stable jobs.
C. Old-age career change is possible for tax officers.
D. Knowledge has power and learning has no age limit.

28 Who does the author think can reach their destination more easily?
A. Busy drivers. B. Traffic-rule makers.
C. Hurrying cyclists. D. Traffic-law observers.
29. What does the underlined word “single-mindedly” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. Unwillingly. B. Hesitantly. C. Determinedly. D. Liberatedly.
30. What is paragraph 5 mainly about?
A. How to accept responsibilities fully.
B. How to achieve our goals properly.
C. How to train ourselves efficiently.
D. How to interpret things subjectively.
31. What is the meaning of life based on?
A. The basic rights of existence.
B. The ignorance of natural laws.
C. The translation of human ideas.
D. The change of our personal path.

B The ocean protection matters
C. Exercise is beneficial to health
D. Nature can restore itself fully
