Beyond a pile of hay bales (干草捆) , past the site of Indiana’s first ground-testing competition, high school students in this eastern town walk down a grassy hill to reach their newest classroom: a fenced-in (围栏围住的) field of cattle. Starting next school year, the animals, with names like Ground Round and Honey Bear, will be fed by students taking an agricultural (农业的) science class. When they are fat enough, they will be fed back to their caretakers — as beef burgers on lunchroom plates.
Hagerstown, population 1, 769, is among rural communities facing population drop and the weakening of agricultural ties. Schools are turning to hands-on agricultural classes that supply cheaper, healthier lunchroom food.
Hagerstown schools have lost enough students since 2010 to cause a big drop in per-pupil funding. School officials say the cattle program — informally “Where’s the Beef? ”— will save at least $2, 000 each year and offer more job training.
Even here, Wayne County lost 89 farms between 2007 and 2012. “Most of our students come from town,” said senior Macy Felton. “They can point out that’s a cow, but they wouldn’t know what to do with them.”
Agricultural mechanics teacher Nathan Williamson proposed the cattle class: students would learn farming skills and animal health science while replacing 5, 000 pounds of bought hamburger beef. “Right now, beef prices are going through the roof,” he said. Students put up a fence around 10 acres for the herd (畜群) , with community donations. Extra support will fund future farm animals. Some students, like Garrett Blevins, now hope to pursue animal science jobs. Others aren’t too worried that pupils might grow too attached to the animals.
4. Where is the students’ newest classroom?
A. A busy downtown. B. A field of cattle.
C. A campus lab. D. A school lunchroom.
5. What benefits does the cattle program bring?
A. Restoring farms across the county. B. Raising more young local farmers.
C. Serving chicken raised by students. D. Reducing costs and offering training.
6. What can we infer about the students’ knowledge of cows?
A. They often work on farms after school. B. They can name cows like Ground Round.
C. They know little about how to raise them. D. They understand farming techniques well.
7. According to the last paragraph, the cattle class is mainly ________.
A. Short-sighted. B. Money-wasted.
C. Interest-raising. D. Skill-enhancing.
B 5. D 6. C 7. D

根据第一段“Beyond a pile of hay bales (干草捆) , past the site of Indiana’s first ground-testing competition, high school students in this eastern town walk down a grassy hill to reach their newest classroom: a fenced-in (围栏围住的) field of cattle. (在一堆干草捆的另一边,穿过印第安纳州首届地面测试比赛的场地,这座东部小镇的高中生们走下长满青草的山坡,来到他们最新的教室 —— 一片用围栏围起来的养牛场。)”可知,学生最新的教室是养牛场。故选B项。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“School officials say the cattle program — informally “Where’s the Beef? ”— will save at least $2, 000 each year and offer more job training.(学校管理人员表示,这个养牛项目 —— 非正式名称为“牛肉在哪儿?”—— 每年至少能节省2000美元,并提供更多职业技能培训。)”
根据第四段““Most of our students come from town,” said senior Macy Felton. “They can point out that’s a cow, but they wouldn’t know what to do with them.”(高三学生梅西・费尔顿说:“我们大多数学生都来自城镇,他们能认出那是牛,但却不知道该怎么照料它们。”)”
根据最后一段 “Agricultural mechanics teacher Nathan Williamson proposed the cattle class: students would learn farming skills and animal health science while replacing 5, 000 pounds of bought hamburger beef. “Right now, beef prices are going through the roof,” he said. Students put up a fence around 10 acres for the herd (畜群) , with community donations. Extra support will fund future farm animals. Some students, like Garrett Blevins, now hope to pursue animal science jobs.(农业机械老师内森・威廉姆森提议开设这门养牛课:学生们将学习农耕技能和动物健康科学,同时替代掉原本需要采购的5000磅汉堡牛肉。“眼下,牛肉价格一路飞涨。”他说。学生们靠着社区捐赠,为这群牛在10英亩的土地上围起了围栏。额外的资助将用于未来饲养更多农场动物。像加勒特・布莱文斯这样的部分学生,如今也希望未来从事动物科学相关的工作。)”可知,这门课主要是提升技能的。故选D项。

Australia is known for its koalas, small hairy animals that live mainly in eucalyptus trees (桉树) and feed on eucalyptus leaves. Without these trees, koalas cannot survive.
In recent years, koalas have faced serious threats. They are hunted by other animals, suffer from diseases, and are often hit by cars. Wildfires have destroyed large areas of forest, and humans continue to cut down eucalyptus trees for wood. As a result, koala numbers have fallen sharply. In the Australian state of New South Wales (NSW) , koalas are now considered endangered, meaning they are at risk of disappearing forever. The Australian government has warned that if no action is taken, this could happen by 2050.
However, there is some good news. The Australian government has announced the creation of a new national park designed to protect koalas. The Great Koala National Park (GKNP) will cover 4, 760 square kilometres, making it one of the largest parks in NSW. The park will connect with existing national parks to create a much larger protected area.
For many years, people have worked to protect koalas, mainly by protecting eucalyptus trees that provide food and shelter. Their efforts led to the idea of creating a national park dedicated to the koala.
The plan became a greater need after wildfires killed thousands of koalas in 2019 and 2020. In February 2022, koalas were officially listed as endangered.
In September 2025, the government said that $146 million would be set aside to create the park and that tree-cutting in the area should stop. This move is expected to protect about one-fifth of the remaining koalas in NSW. Wildlife groups welcomed the decision but pointed out that habitat destruction remains the main threat. The new park is seen as only a first step toward protecting these endangered and well-known animals and ensuring their future survival.
8. What situation about koalas is described in the first two paragraphs?
A. Growing risks to their survival. B. Reduced threats to their survival.
C. Stable numbers in their population. D. Improved conditions in their forests.
9. The underlined phrase “dedicated to” in paragraph 4 is closest in meaning to ________.
A. far from B. harmful to C. crowded with D. designed for
10. What do wildlife groups probably think about the new park?
A. It is just a first step. B. It is mostly for show.
C. It is too small to matter. D. It is a complete solution.
11. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the passage?
A. To address environmental problems. B. To discuss koala threats and solutions.
C. To explain why koalas are endangered. D. To describe the history of national parks.
A 9. D 10. A 11. B

根据第二段“In recent years, koalas have faced serious threats. They are hunted by other animals, suffer from diseases, and are often hit by cars. Wildfires have destroyed large areas of forest, and humans continue to cut down eucalyptus trees for wood. As a result, koala numbers have fallen sharply. (近年来,考拉面临着严重的威胁。它们被其他动物猎杀,饱受疾病折磨,还经常被汽车撞到。野火摧毁了大片森林,人类继续砍伐桉树作为木材。结果,考拉的数量急剧下降。)”可知,前两段描述了考拉生存面临越来越多的风险。故选A项。
根据第四段“For many years, people have worked to protect koalas, mainly by protecting eucalyptus trees that provide food and shelter. Their efforts led to the idea of creating a national park dedicated to the koala. (多年来,人们一直在努力保护考拉,主要是通过保护提供食物和庇护所的桉树。他们的努力催生了建立一个为考拉_____的国家公园的想法。)”可知,人们努力保护考拉,所以建立国家公园是为了保护考拉,由此可推知,划线短语“dedicated to”意为“为……而设计的”,与“designed for”意思相近。故选D项。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“Wildlife groups welcomed the decision but pointed out that habitat destruction remains the main threat. The new park is seen as only a first step toward protecting these endangered and well-known animals and ensuring their future survival. (野生动物团体对这一决定表示欢迎,但指出栖息地破坏仍然是主要威胁。这个新公园被视为保护这些濒危且知名的动物并确保它们未来生存的第一步。)”可知,野生动物团体认为新公园只是保护考拉的第一步。故选A项。
根据第二段“In recent years, koalas have faced serious threats. (近年来,考拉面临着严重的威胁。)”以及第三段“However, there is some good news. The Australian government has announced the creation of a new national park designed to protect koalas. (然而,也有一些好消息。澳大利亚政府宣布将建立一个新的国家公园来保护考拉。)”和全文内容可知,文章主要讲述了澳大利亚考拉面临生存威胁的现状,以及政府为保护考拉所采取的措施,包括建立国家公园等,同时也提到了野生动物团体对此的看法,所以作者写这篇文章的主要目的是讨论考拉面临的威胁和解决方案。故选B项。

Mali is a country in West Africa, where many people speak Bambara. For a long time, Bambara was seldom written down. French was the official language until 2023, when Malians chose to replace it with Bambara and 12 other local languages.
This decision created a new challenge: how to provide reading materials in languages that had few written texts. To solve this, the government partnered with RobotsMali, a startup using artificial intelligence (AI) to create children’s books in Bambara. Since 2023, more than 140 books have been produced. The AI system first writes stories in English, which are then translated into Bambara with the help of Google Translate. Experts review and correct the translations, and AI is also used to create pictures and reading tests.
Ten-year-old Soko Coulibaly, who had never been to school, joined the program. At first, she felt nervous, but soon found it easy to read because she was familiar (熟悉的) with the words spoken at home. She now enjoys reading in Bambara and shares the books with her mother, who cannot read.
AI has made the book production process much faster. However, many African languages, including Bambara, are not well supported by AI systems. Google Translate added Bambara in2022, but its translations are not always correct. Despite these challenges, AI has made it possible to produce books much more quickly, taking only days rather than weeks or months.
The main goal is to build a stronger written tradition for Bambara. Although funding ran out in April 2024, the program has helped many children, including Soko, learn to read. Soko hopes the program will continue, as it has shown her how technology can support education while preserving local languages. The use of AI allows for the rapid creation of materials that can help preserve local culture and languages, while also supporting educational development.
12. What is the primary issue discussed in the first two paragraphs?
A. The lack of written Bambara texts. B. The shift from Bambara to French.
C. The difficulty of Bambara spelling. D. The influence of French in education.
13. What role does AI mainly play in the book making process?
A. A text checker. B. A reading coach.
C. A story maker. D. A book printer.
14. What limitation of AI is highlighted in the passage?
A. Slow work in making books. B. High cost of using AI systems.
C. Strong need for internet access. D. Weak support for local languages.
15. What is the author’s attitude toward the use of AI in this program?
A. Cautious. B. Doubtful. C. Supportive. D. Unconcerned.
A 13. C 14. D 15. C

根据第二段“The AI system first writes stories in English, which are then translated into Bambara with the help of Google Translate.(该人工智能系统首先用英语撰写故事,然后借助谷歌翻译将其翻译成班巴拉语)”可知AI在制书流程中的首要作用是“先写故事”,即负责生成故事内容。
根据第四段的“However, many African languages, including Bambara, are not well supported by AI systems. Google Translate added Bambara in 2022, but its translations are not always correct.(然而,许多非洲语言,包括班巴拉语,尚未得到人工智能系统的充分支持。谷歌翻译在2022年加入了班巴拉语这一选项,但其翻译结果并非总是准确的)”可知,人工智能的局限性是对包括 Bambara在内的当地语言支持不足、翻译质量不稳定。故选D。
【15题详解】

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
A sudden and strong fire broke out in Wang Fuk Court, Tai Po, Hong Kong. Starting on the lower floors, it spread rapidly like a monster, destroying walls and furniture. Thick black smoke went up the building, darkening the sky and making it hard for nearby residents to breathe. People’s screams filled the air, creating a frightening scene.
At that moment, 28-year-old Filipino home helper Rhodora was alone on the 23rd floor, patting her employer’s (雇主) three-month-old baby to sleep. Suddenly, bright orange flames flashed outside the window, and the smell of burning plastic mixed with thick smoke came in. Her heart raced and hands shook, but the baby’s peaceful face reminded her to stay strong. She rushed to the bathroom, made a thick blanket wet, and put it closely around the baby — leaving only the nose and mouth out and holding the little one close to her.
When she tried opening the front door, thick smoke rushed in, making her cough badly. As the hallway was hard to see through, Rhodora locked herself and the baby in the bedroom, the only room with clean air as she’d closed its window earlier. She pushed a wet towel under the door, trying to block the smoke.
Panic welled up, and tears clouded her eyes, but the baby’s soft cries forced her to calm down. Shaking, she sent a message to her elder sister in the Philippines: “Sis, big fire on 23rd floor with the baby! Smoke everywhere, help us! I’m so scared!” Frightened, her sister posted a tearful video on social media, begging firefighters: “Save my sister and the baby in Wang Fuk Court, Tai Po! Time is running out!” She shared details, hoping rescuers would see it. Rhodora held the baby tightly, whispering comforting words as she waited anxiously for help.

Paragraph 1
As time passed, the smoke filled the room, and Rhodora could hardly breathe. Her throat burned, and dizziness surged, but she clung tightly to the baby, pressing the wet blanket firmer around the tiny body. The baby whimpered, and she tried a weak, hoarse lullaby. Acrid smoke seared her lungs, blurring her vision, yet she shielded the baby with her own body. Just as consciousness faded, the door crashed open — firefighters, guided by the social media appeal, found them! Rhodora was unconscious, but the baby was safe in her arms. After a quick check, rescuers carried them downstairs, and soon Rhodora and the baby were sent to the hospital by ambulance.
Paragraph 2
Rhodora’s employer rushed to the hospital, deeply thankful to Rhodora. Rushing to the ward, she saw the baby sleeping peacefully and Rhodora regaining consciousness. Tears of relief streamed down her cheeks as she held Rhodora’s hand, repeating gratitude. The doctor explained Rhodora’s selfless protection kept the baby safe, and she had just fainted from smoke inhalation. Impressed by her courage, the employer regarded her as family, promising better care. Rhodora smiled faintly, eyes warm — this life-saving bond would last forever.
