Growing up in Norway (挪威), I had heard a lot about polar exploration. As a child, I spent a lot of time outdoors building bonfires (篝火), camping and skiing in the mountains.
Aged 14, seven years before my South Pole expedition (远征), I set my sights on becoming the youngest woman to ski across Greenland (格陵兰岛). At that age, several guiding companies were unwilling to take me on because I was so young. Then I met Lars Ebbesen, an experienced polar guide. Straight away, I felt he respected my ambitions. But I had to go on an expedition to Finnmark first—a county in northern Norway—to prove I was capable. It was dark and cold but I fell in love with the challenge. That experience prepared me for Greenland, where the crossing took 28 days due to terrible weather.
It was on my 15th birthday that I decided to go to Antarctica (南极洲). I didn’t tell my mum about my plans at first. I just told my dad, who is like me, a big dreamer. My mum is more pragmatic. My dad and I contacted Lars to work out the details of the trip. When I told my mum, she realized I had already made up my mind and agreed.
When I began the expedition last November, I was 21. On the expedition, I was surprised that there was so much snowfall. On the hardest days, I was in fresh snow up to my knees and could only go 9.5km in 10 hours. Towards the end, my lungs were painful, and I struggled to breathe.
When I crossed Greenland, Lars nicknamed me “the polar egg”. The idea was that one day I would hatch (破壳) and do a bigger expedition on my own. When I reached the South Pole I sent him an emoji (表情符号) of a chick breaking out of an egg. Though with everything I’ve experienced, I feel much older than that.
4. Why did the author go on the Finnmark journey?
A. To show her abilities. B. To escape her everyday life.
C. To explore a remote area. D. To meet an experienced team.
5. What does the underlined word “pragmatic” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Flexible. B. Realistic. C. Athletic. D. Accessible.
6. What can we infer about the author during her South Pole expedition?
A. She braved the physical challenges. B. She enjoyed the landscape most.
C. She gained several survival skills. D. She adapted to the environment soon.
7. What did the author intend to communicate by sending Lars the emoji?
A. She was ready for a new task. B. She made his expectations come true.
C. She was worthy of what she achieved. D. She did more than he believed possible.
【答案】4. A 5. B 6. A 7. B

A Washington State University study showed that being exposed to even small amounts of available green and blue space may improve older adults’ mental and physical health.
Published in the journal Health & Place, the study is based on health survey data from more than 42,000 people aged 65 and older living in urban areas of Washington State between 2011 and 2019. Participants completed the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey (BRFSS), which asked about their general health, mental health, and levels of psychological distress (困扰). Lead author Adithya Vegaraju and his coworker, Solmaz Amiri, then analyzed the responses. Nearly 2% of respondents showed signs of serious psychological distress, and 19% reported being in fair or poor general health.
The researchers presented initial findings for this study at an American Academy of Neurology Annual Meeting in April 2023. Those findings looked only at the relationship between serious psychological distress and distance to the closest green and blue space. In the final published version (版本) of their study, the researchers looked at the amount of green space, forest area and open space in people’s neighborhoods. They also studied how these were linked to people’s self-rated health and took into account differences such as race and education level. They found that a 10% increase in green and blue space lowered the chance that older people would report their general health as poor or fair.
Although other studies have looked at how being close to nature might affect health, Vegaraju said this is one of the first to focus on older adults in America. Older people are more likely to have mental health problems, which can raise the risk of memory loss and dementia (痴呆). They are also less likely to receive treatment to manage their mental health conditions, which concerns researchers much.
“If exposure to green or blue space could help prevent, slow down or even treat poor mental health in older adults, we need to look at that more closely as a way to improve mental health outcomes in this population,” Vegaraju said. One potential solution could involve nature prescriptions (处方), a growing practice that involves healthcare providers giving patients written recommendations to spend time outdoors.
8. What can we learn from the BRFSS data about older people?
A. They preferred indoor activities.
B. They disliked urban water bodies.
C. Around one-fifth of them had health problems.
D. Half of them showed psychological distress.
9. How did the final version of the study differ from the initial one?
A. It considered more factors. B. It ignored self-assessment.
C. It used fewer respondents. D. It focused on emotional problems.
10. What is one reason that senior’ mental health issues are worrying?
A. They hardly recover after treatment. B. They seldom seek professional help.
C. They often avoid nature prescriptions. D. They always have trouble thinking.
11. Which of the following might Vegaraju advise older adults to do?
A. See doctors soon after they are ill. B. Gather many resources from nature.
C. Follow diverse popular health practices. D. Increase outdoor time for better health.
【答案】8. C 9. A 10. B 11. D

【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中的“They are also less likely to receive treatment to manage their mental health conditions, which concerns researchers much.(他们也不太可能接受治疗来管理自己的心理健康状况,这让研究人员非常担忧)”可知,老年人心理健康问题令人担忧的一个原因是他们很少寻求专业的帮助。故选B项。

Reading, for children, is similar to adventure. The idea of inspiring children’s playful nature dates back to the publication of Lewis Carroll’ s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (爱丽丝梦游仙境) in 1865. Alice’s playful exploration of Wonderland drives the story. There are no clear moral values taught in the book, making it a playground for children to engage with their wildest imagination. This book is often recognized as the one that marked the end of the era (时代) of moralism in children’s literature, bringing in a new era where authors began producing entertaining children’s books.
The idea of “reading as play” doesn’t need text and illustrations to perfectly match; in fact, when the pictures only mirror what the text narrates, the experience is less intense than when there are gaps between those two elements. British illustrator and writer Pat Hutchins’s Rosie’s Walk from 1968, for example, presents two different stories. While the text describes a simple walk taken by Rosie the hen, the illustrations tell the additional story of a fox’s failed attempts to catch Rosie throughout her walk. This parallel (平行的) storytelling is hard to achieve with words alone. Similarly, in Where the Wild Things Are by American author and illustrator Maurice Sendak, the text slowly disappears as the images continue expanding, offering a playful space for the readers to explore the main character’s emotional journey. The lack of directing words allows the young readers to create their own engagement with the characters.
Wordless picture books are a relatively new style in children’s literature. The removal of words makes it easier to convey (表达) difficult, unspeakable things. In Yellow Butterfly, a wordless picture book by Ukrainian illustrator Oleksandr Shatokhin, war is seen through the eyes of a young girl who finds hope in the symbolism of yellow butterflies (蝴蝶). Without words, children can interpret and connect with the story in their own way. The language gap is also broken, allowing kids from anywhere to understand and own the story.
12. What is Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland known for in children’s literature?
A. Using images in storytelling.
B. Pioneering the theme of adventure.
C. Shifting from moral lessons to fun stories.
D. Centering on realism and personal growth.
13. What is the author’s attitude toward the idea of “reading as play”?
A. Curious. B. Doubtful. C. Uncaring. D. Supportive.
14. What is an advantage of wordless picture books?
A. They allow children to read faster. B. They present complex topics more easily.
C They save the author from writing text. D. They help improve children’s drawing skills.
15. What might be a suitable title for the text?
A. The secrets of wordless books
B. An exploration of literary texts
C. A playground between words and images
D. The power of entertainment in children’s literature
【答案】12. C 13. D 14. B 15. C
根据第一段中的“This book is often recognized as the one that marked the end of the era (时代) of moralism in children’s literature, bringing in a new era where authors began producing entertaining children’s books.(这本书常被视作标志着儿童文学道德主义时代终结的作品,开启了一个新的时代,在这个时代作家们开始创作充满趣味的儿童书籍)”可知,《爱丽丝梦游仙境》在儿童文学领域以从道德说教向有趣故事的转变而闻名。故选C项。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中的“The idea of “reading as play” doesn’t need text and illustrations to perfectly match; in fact, when the pictures only mirror what the text narrates, the experience is less intense than when there are gaps between those two elements.(“阅读即玩耍”这一理念并不要求文字与插图完美匹配;事实上,当图片仅仅反映文字所叙述的内容时,其阅读体验不如二者存在差异时那般强烈)”以及作者通过列举《罗西的散步》和《野兽国》这两个例子,进一步说明该理念能为读者提供有趣的探索空间,作者对此持支持态度。
所以C选项“A playground between words and images (文字与图像间的游乐场)”最适合作为文章标题。故选C项。
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填人空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
You sit on your sofa, looking through your newsfeed, when suddenly hunger hits. Rather than checking your fridge, you open a food delivery app and order a meal. ___16___
Cooking at home is much healthier than eating out or ordering food online. When you cook for yourself, you have better control over the ingredients, which can lead to greater benefits like boosted energy levels and improved sleep. ___17___ The problem with the American diet is that people are depending more on store-bought food, which is usually higher in calories and lower in nutritional value.
Some argue that ordering food saves time, and that time is money, so buying a takeout is saving money, right? However, that is far from the case. ___18___ For example, a takeout pepperoni pizza (意大利香肠披萨) costs $15.49 on average, S24.25 for delivery, but only $9.90 to make at home. Additionally, many recipes for homemade pepperoni pizzas take only 20 minutes to make with the right preparations, offering a more cost-effective and more enjoyable meal.
As food delivery has become increasingly accessible, many are less drawn to taking time out of their busy days to cook a proper meal. ___19___ Cooking has been proven to have mental health benefits. Research shows that cooking improves mental health, boosting confidence and leading to less anxiety.
___20___ A fundamental part of being an adult is having the ability to take care of yourself, whether physically or mentally: Cooking is a great remedy (方法) for both.
A. This is a change people should start making now.
B. The first step is to go out and get your hands dirty.
C. Cooking at home is significantly cheaper than ordering a takeout.
D. Additionally, you can track the nutritional value of your meals more effectively.
E. Cooking food, however, is actually a great way to relax after a long day of working.
F. While this has become common, people should try to take time to cook a quality meal.
G. Learning how to cook is a vital life skill for high school students to transition into adulthood.
【答案】16. F 17. D 18. C 19. E 20. G

I’m sorry to hear that you’ve run out of good books to read lately. I’d like to recommend my favorite book, The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. It’s a touching story about friendship and seeing the world through a child’s eyes. What I love most is its beautiful meaning — it reminds us what truly matters in life.
Reading regularly has greatly influenced me. It not only improves my language skills but also helps me relax and think more deeply. Whenever I feel stressed, a good book always brings me peace.

Best wishes,

Host family accommodation, or living with host families, remains popular among language travel students for its unique advantages. These days, host families are trying to offer more in terms of quality, for they have something to worry about.
Host family accommodation is often seen as the number-one choice for its advantages in language study, cultural communication and the cost of living. Staying alongside host families enables students to get enough practice for the time of their studying so that they can learn the local language very quickly. You don’t know a lot of words and their real meanings until you use them with local people. Living in host families also has the advantage for students of being able to spend a lot of time communicating with their “host parents”, and get to know the local way of life, people and culture. Another advantage is that host family accommodation can sometimes be the least expensive. It attracts students, for it ensures them a family of living at a low cost.
The advantages, however, have not prevented host families from worrying. On the one hand, some host families are losing their unique selling point. The problem is that the majority of hosts in big cities, now generally single and young, have less time available for students, but the selling point for host family accommodation is communication practice. On the other hand, students’ expectations have risen. They are becoming more demanding and asking for more than ever from their accommodation, as they come mainly from high socio-economic groups in their own countries.
To get out of the difficult situation, host families are now making efforts to improve the quality of service. They are trying to make living conditions better, including broadband Internet service, private bathrooms, and access to plenty of hot water for long showers. They are also providing students with structured family activities. It is believed that host family accommodation will keep the popularity for language travel students.

【答案】Host family accommodation appeals to language travel students but worries host families. It offers language practice, cultural experience and lower costs. Yet it is losing appeal due to less communication and higher service demands. Host families are improving services to keep students.

“If exposure to green or blue space could help prevent slow down or even treat poor mental health in older adults, we need to look at that more closely as a way to improve mental health outcomes in this population,” Vegaraju said.
D
