He’s two years younger than me so I’ve always felt really protective towards him. Well, that was until a few weeks ago. The problem is that he now goes to the same high school as me but he doesn’t seem to get that school is different from home. He and his friends seem to think it’s funny to follow me around and play jokes on me. At first, my friends thought it was quite funny, but now he’s really starting to get on their nerves. They’ve kind of shut me out. I’ve spoken to my parents and they had a word with him, but it’s made no difference. If anything, it’s made things worse. Honestly, I don’t know what to do next and I’m afraid I’ll say something to him that I might regret. What should I do? Just ignore him—that’s the key. Clearly, you’d like him to stop, but I suppose the more he sees his behaviour gets to you, the more he’ll do it on purpose. Don’t pay any attention to him! Then he’ll get bored and realize it’s much more fun to hang out with people in his own year than to stick to his older brother. Turn the tables on him. Follow him around and see how he likes it. Surely you know enough foolish things about him. If he still never changes, you could warn him you would share these secrets with others to make his life grey! Have another chat with him. Explain to him why it upsets you and ask him how he’d feel if you did the same to him. Hopefully, he’s able to understand. 4 What is Darren93’s problem? A. His parents don’t love him. B. His brother jokes with him. C. His friends often lie to him. D. He goes to a bad high school. 5. How do Darren93’s friends react (反应) to his brother’s behavior now? A. They think it is quite funny. B. They don’t care about it a lot. C. They talk to their parents about it. D. They don’t want to be with Darren93. 6. What does “Turn the tables on him.” mean in Cheeseman’s reply? A. Keep him safe from danger. B. Have a serious talk with him. C. Pay him back in the same way. D. Solve difficult problems for him. 7. According to Sandybob, how should Darren93 deal with his problem? I’m writing to you from my hotel in Cairo, the capital of Egypt. I’m having a wonderful time here. ②I saw pyramids, the most famous of all the sights in Egypt! They are huge stone buildings that are over 4,000 years old. Standing in front of the Great Pyramid, about 133 meters in height, I felt as small as an ant. I also rode a camel in the desert and saw the Great Sphinx, which has the body of a lion and the head of a man. Another day, I visited temples (庙宇) that were built thousands of years ago. The stories on the walls, which show ancient life, are like a history book. ③Egyptians eat rice, bread, fish, lamb, chicken, turkey, and stuffed vegetables. I tried koshari, which is a mix of rice, pasta, and lentils. I also ate a kind of snack called shawarma. It looks like shouzhuabing. I really love the taste of this food. Egyptian bread is inexpensive and eaten with every meal. In Egypt, people often leave a little food on the plate to show they have enough. ④Egyptians are warm-hearted and I was even invited to a local family. In the evenings, local people love to meet friends at the market or drink tea together. On the streets, I saw many women wearing traditional clothes that covered their hair, shoulders and knees. ⑤People here speak Arabic. For example, when they say “ahlan wa sahlan” and “shukran”, they mean “welcome” and “thank you”. In tourist areas, English is also widely used. ⑥Tomorrow morning, I am flying back. Zheng was born in Hirado, Japan to a Japanese mother and a Chinese father. His father was given an official position by the Ming Dynasty, so he moved to Fujian Province at seven. Zheng was given a Confucian education in Nanjing in 1644. The next year, the Ming Dynasty gave way to the Qing Dynasty. When Qing Dynasty forces entered Fujian, his father surrendered (投降). But Zheng, being against his father’s orders, made up his mind to rebuild the Ming Dynasty and began to build up land and naval forces (海军). Over the next 12 years, Zheng had built a strong position on the Fujian coast, centered on the islands of Xiamen and Jinmen. In 1659, Zheng carried out one of his most important actions. With a force of more than 100,000 up the Yangtze River, he succeeded. There, however, wrong decisions led to a terrible loss. Facing increasing pressure, he hit upon the plan of taking Taiwan from the Dutch (荷兰人). In 1661, he landed on Taiwan and fought for nine months. At last, the Dutch surrendered and left Tainan. Zheng then set up a governing system, settled the island with his soldiers and families from Fujian and spread Chinese culture. His larger goals were cut short by his death in 1662. At last, Zheng’s plans failed, but he became amazingly popular all over the world. In Japan, the famous play, The Battles of Koxinga (1715), made Zheng as well known to Japanese. In Europe, Zheng was famous for driving the Dutch away. In China, he soon became a popular spirit and cultural hero to the early Chinese in Taiwan. On the official level, in 1875 the Qing government recognized him as a symbol of loyalty (忠诚) and built a temple to honor him on Taiwan. Today, Zheng Chenggong is still remembered as a national hero in Chinese history. 12. What is Zheng Chenggong best known for? A. Fighting against the Qing Dynasty. B. Even more concerning, much of it is wasted daily—a reality that alarms us all, Initially, we can start with small steps. At home, limit your shower time. Also, collect and reuse water whenever possible, like using leftover water to clean floors. In public places, do some volunteer work to help people understand how wasting water hits our planet hard, just as a dry well hits a thirsty village. Every contribution counts. Together, our efforts merge like streams into a mighty river of change. Remember: Every drop you save is a future you secure. The Student Union of No. 11 Middle School February 7th, 2026 Friends and neighbors, Water is valuable, but we’re facing a shortage of fresh water. What’s worse, a number of people waste water unconsciously. The solution lies in these actions. At home, we can limit the shower time and turn off the tap while brushing teeth. Once we find the tap is leaking, we ought to have it fixed. When noticing a tap left running in public, we should turn it off. Additionally, try calling on neighbors and local factories not to pour dirty water into rivers. If everyone develops good habits, much water can be saved! Let’s act now for our future and for our planet. The Student Union of No. 11 Middle School February 7th, 2026 Friends and neighbors, Water is valuable, but there isn’t enough fresh water on Earth. Therefore, it’s high time to take action. At home, never let the tap keep running while brushing teeth. What’s more, reuse water from washing fruit or vegetables—for example, to water plants. In public places, whenever you see a dripping tap, make sure to turn it off. Besides, share short videos or give community talks to drive home the message about the importance of saving water. D Zheng Chenggong (1624-1662), also known as Koxinga, is best known for setting up Chinese control over Taiwan. B.
