Natalie Worley, 7, doesn’t want anyone to miss the fun.
Every week, Manor Elementary School holds Fun Food Friday.
For $1, students can buy a different snack at lunchtime. Last week’s choices were chocolate and candy. “Foods offered are cookies, ring pops, popcorn and chips,” said Mary Owen, Natalie’s second-grade teacher. “The proceeds (收入) will go toward helping cover the cost of the sixth-grade camp.”
But, Natalie learned, one of her 27 classmates can’t afford the $1 activity.
“That broke her heart,” said Grandmother Cheryl VanEeckhoutte. “She decided she wanted to help that student. But, she thought about it more and thought, if there’s one student who couldn’t afford the $1, there may be more. She then decided to start her Fun Food project. She wanted to raise more money so every second-grader in her class could participate and not feel left out.”
Natalie set out to collect $100. Then, her grandmother shared the idea on Facebook. Soon, another $140 was collected. “She is so excited about achieving her goal,” said VanEeckhoutte. “Her goal now is to make sure every second-grader (in the school) can participate all year. She has a good heart and wants to save the world. I’ll always back her up.”
On Friday about 13 students bought a treat with money raised by Natalie, said Owen.
“I was surprised to hear how much money the family was able to raise in such a short time,” said Owen. “Natalie’s seeing first-hand how she can help others in her community.”
“Natalie has a big heart,” said her teacher. “She is always thinking of others. You can always find Natalie helping her classmates. I imagine that she will only do more amazing things in the future.”

My favorite activity is playing, watching, reading, and really anything to do with basketball. A basketball court (球场) is where I feel most at home.
As I see it, it’s wildly popular in the US and its athletes are extremely recognizable, because it’s the one sport where an athlete’s face is not covered up by a football helmet (头盔) or baseball hat. My favorite time and place is anywhere and anytime. I prefer indoors, although it can be played outdoors. Many people often play in a driveway at home, but the best is always against someone on a court.
I started playing basketball because of my favorite player, Shaquille O’Neal. He was a huge, unstoppable player. When I was 11 years old, I decided to go outside to the family basketball hoop (球框) and take a shot (投球). This was my first time ever shooting a basketball. I will never forget the first shot I ever took. It was perfect. It felt amazing! And I’ve been in love with this sport ever since!
I learned a long time ago that very few people are going to have the love of this game that I do. I’ve always understood that in this area, for the most part, I am alone. Especially coming from the state of Texas, where football is king.
I’m not the best of players. When I do good things on court, I know it’s because I can make up for my lack (缺乏) of athleticism by being a student of the game. I’ve never missed a training day. I don’t worry about school, family, or problems. I think about what’s in front of me, and how I can get the basketball in the hoop.
Playing, watching, and reading about basketball fills me with a sense of enjoyment that I truly do feel that very few people can match.
8 What does the author think of basketball?
A. It should be played indoors. B. It has won popularity in the US.
C. It is more dangerous than other sports. D. It has become a game for huge people.
9. How did the author feel after his first shot?
A. Very nervous. B. Truly tired. C. Really excited. D. Quite free.
10. What do we know about the author as a basketball player?
A. He is happy to improve himself through hard work.
B. He really enjoys playing basketball alone.
C. He would rather be a football player.
D. He is on Shaquille O’Neal’s team.
11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Life lessons from playing basketball B. My road to being a basketball player
C. Changes in my basketball dream D. My great love of basketball

Spring is an exciting time in the southern Appalachian Mountains. Temperatures are rising, wildflowers are blooming (绽放), and—for many reasons—wildlife is on the move. But humans are also on the go, and roadkill is a reality here, as in many places across the world. Roadkill has reached a tipping point in North Carolina and Tennessee, where some 1,900 black bears now move back and forth across the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, looking for mates and food. To do so, they often face difficult decisions: where, when and how to cross Interstate 40 in Pigeon River Gorge.
“Perhaps the single most important thing drivers can do to help wildlife, no matter where they are, is to notice the speed limit,” says Ben Prater, Southeast program director for Defenders of Wildlife. “That’s because driving at slower speeds gives you more time to brake (刹车) safely if an animal runs out into the road in front of you. It’s a very simple solution that can keep wildlife and people safe.”
Tim Gestwicki, CEO of North Carolina Wildlife Federation says, “Spring is a time when all kinds of wildlife are moving along roads and can rush out unexpectedly. Before you know it, an animal can be right in front of your car. It’s a time to be watchful and wary.”
Perhaps one of the most important things we all can do for wildlife is to share their difficulties and educate others about how best to protect them. “National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA) is working with middle school students in Tennessee and North Carolina to teach them how to avoid roadkill,” says Jeff Hunter, senior program manager for NPCA. “These young are our future drivers, leaders, highway engineers, wildlife scientists, park managers, and writers who will need to protect America’s national parks and the wildlife both inside and outside parks.”
12. What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A. Spring wildflowers are hard to find in Pigeon River Gorge.
B. Roadkill is a serious problem in North Carolina and Tennessee in spring.
C. The temperature this spring is extremely high in the Appalachian Mountains.
D. Black bears are very short of food in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
13. What is Ben Prater’s suggestion for drivers?
A. Driving on the highway. B. Practicing braking safely.
C. Lowering the driving speed. D. Keeping the car in good condition.
14. What does the underlined word “wary” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Patient. B. Active. C. Strict. D. Careful.
15. How does NPCA help to protect wildlife?
A. By training drivers and highway engineers. B. By sharing animal health information.
C. By supporting more national parks. D. By educating local students.

A heavy snowstorm was blowing. By the side of the roadway sat a poor old woman. She was very hungry, for she had tasted no food that day.
Perhaps, she thought, some traveler might come that way who would lend a helping hand. The day drew in, and still she sat and waited.
At last a traveler approached.
“Poor woman,” the traveler cried. Then he passed her, without giving her anything; his conscience (良心) told him that he should do something for her, but he did not want to take off his thick glove in the cold, and without doing this he could not have found a coin.
The poor woman was naturally disappointed (失望的).
By and by another traveler appeared. This one was riding in a carriage (四轮马车). With one hand he let down the carriage window and let his coachman stop, and with the other felt in his pocket.
“How terribly cold it is!” said the rich man, and as he took his hand from his pocket and held out a coin to her, he noticed that instead of silver he was about to give her a piece of gold.
“Dear me! That is far too much,” he cried, but before he could return it to his pocket, the coin fell in the snow.
It was so cold and the man pulled up the window in a great hurry. “It certainly was too much,” he said, “but then I am very rich and can afford to do something good now and then.”
Back home, he thought once more of the poor old woman. “It is not nearly as cold as I thought,” he said. “I certainly gave that old woman too much.”
Meanwhile the first traveler had also reached his journey’s end — a hotel; he was haunted (难以忘却) by the remembrance of that poor lady in the snowy wasteland, and felt very sad for not having stopped to help her. At last he could bear it no longer.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;

C He would rather be a football player.

【答案】12. B 13. C 14. D 15. D

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【答案】One possible version:
“Bring another plate,” he said, calling the waiter to him. “There will be two to dine instead of one. I shall be back soon.” Saying this, he hurried through the darkness to the place where he had left the old woman; she was still there, searching amongst the snow. “What are you looking for?” he asked. “I am trying to find a piece of gold, which a gentleman threw me from his carriage window,” she told him.
“I am afraid you will never find the coin now,” the first traveler said. “But come with me,” he added. “I will take you to my hotel, where there is a bright fire and a good dinner waiting for both of us. You shall be my guest, and I will see that you have a comfortable night’s sleep.” The poor old woman could hardly believe her good luck, as she shyly prepared to follow her new friend. Noticing that she had difficulty in walking, he took her arm, and with slow and patient steps led her to the hotel.
