In the years of my growing up, Dad was strict with me. He made sure I made my bed and did my homework. He would call in advance to make sure there was no alcohol at the party. I got so angry with him for laying down the law. I would scream, “I hate you!” Dad would yell back, “Good! I don’t care!” Deep down I knew he did.
One time at a party, I drank too much alcohol and got so sick. I said, “Call my dad.” Next thing, Dad was carrying me to the car. I woke up the next morning, thinking I would definitely be criticised. As expected, I got a roasting, but I now understand why I need discipline.
Dad was 29 when he got his big roles in films. I had an early start at the age of nine with a role in a 1990s TV series, but it wasn’t until I finished film studies that I pursued my career as an actress. Like those early days for Dad, I faced lots of rejections. Working in such a competitive industry, I’ve sometimes thought, “I can’t do this any more.”
Once, after a trip to Hollywood, I returned to Australia so depressed (沮丧的) and spent months in my bedroom painting, listening to Eckhart Tolle’s music and trying to find myself again. Dad sat me down and said, “Alice, I know it’s hard, but it’s all about persistence (坚持不懈).”
Now I get to work with Dad a lot, which I love. We are both passionate about acting, which comes from us being so interested in people. If it weren’t for Dad, I wouldn’t be where I am today. He’s my biggest fan, and when you have that in your life you can go a long way.
4. What rules did Alice’s father set for her when she was growing up?
A. She has to do housework on weekends.
B. She is required to return home on time each day.
C. She must take acting classes every day to improve her skills.
D. She should make her bed, do her homework and drink no alcohol.
5 What did Alice’s father do when she felt depressed?
A. He laughed at her.
B. He encouraged and comforted her.
C. He forced her to work harder.
D. He told her that she should change her hobby.
6. What do Alice and her father have in common?
A. They got their big roles in their 20s.
B. They are all developing their careers in Australia.
C. They are very famous in the film and television industry.
D. They share a great passion for acting.
7. Which of the following can best describe Alice’s father?
A. Strict but caring. B. Kind and humorous.
C. Wise but tiresome. D. Mature and well-mannered.
Like many of my friends in China and across the world, I was excited to view the masterpiece Ne Zha 2 recently and I must say I thoroughly enjoyed it! What amazed me most was the high-quality animation (动画)and vivid imagery used to retell this classic Chinese epic in a truly compelling way for the new age. Indeed, the film serves as an important medium to transport audiences from reality to the mystical (as in Ne Zha), to places far removed from our own neighbourhoods, and to hear stories from our shared human experience.
Some of the first images that I had of China as a child were from Hong Kong kung fu films that were extremely popular in Trinidad and Tobago in the 1980s and 1990s. Besides, names of martial arts stars such as Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan and Jet Li were known in every household, giving many their first look into a world across the seas and a culture, language and way of life that, while present in my own home as a member of the small but longstanding local Chinese community, remained a mystery to the majority.
Later on, popular films such as Walt Disney’s Mulan and the Oscar-winning Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon further made my generation enamoured with the stories of China, allowing us to eagerly catch up with what domestic audiences here had long enjoyed — a dynamic Chinese film industry telling authentic stories from their own view.
In today’s world where there seems to be more division than consensus (共识), and where we seem to judge first and ask questions later, film remains a powerful medium and channel for promoting more empathy (共情), mutual understanding and bridging divides across regions despite differences in language and cultural affinities-leading to a greater appreciation of the complexities, richness, and diversity of the human experience. Coming from a place of common understanding, only then can we have a more impactful dialogue on the global ambitions that we collectively vision.
8. What aspects of Ne Zha 2 impressed the author most?
A. Its touching Chinese-style music.
B. Its personal heroism plot and grand fight scenes.
C. Its characters’ complex personality.
D. Its high-quality animation and vivid imagery.
9. What formed the author’s first impressions of China when he was a child?
A. His teachers’ influence.
B. His friends loving Bruce Lee.
C. Hong Kong kung fu films and martial arts stars.
D. The big and long-standing local Chinese community.
10. What does the underlined phrase “enamored with” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Interested in. B. Capable of. C. Satisfied with. D. Responsible for.
11. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. A good movie requires high-tech support.
B. Film promotes empathy and cross-regional understanding.
C. Division makes global dialogue impossible now.
D. Culture differences stop human experience sharing.
Postmates, an American delivery company, has built a robot, called Serve, which was designed to make short-distance deliveries in cities.
To know what’s going on, Serve has a laser radar (激光雷达)sensor on top, in which spinning lasers let it detect objects around it and know how far away they are. Also, behind each artificial eye is a camera, with six more imaging devices spread around the robot. Inside it is another sensor that allows Postmates to know if there is a package in there.
“One of our key decisions early on was to rely heavily on the robot’s ability to see the environment,” says Ali Kashani, the vice president for robotics at Postmates. Since the sidewalk is “a very chaotic environment”, he points out, the robot needs to be able to take it all in and figure out what to do. This robot, and many like it, also must be able to signal their intentions to the pedestrians (行人). For that, it has a number of approaches. One is using its eyes; another is a colourful light ring that goes around the top. “When it wants to make way for a pedestrian, it will use its eyes and look down,” he explains. It can also use the lights on the top as a turn signal, which is obvious, and also look left and right when it’s turning left and right.
“Using eye movements and other silent signals is a good idea,” says Aaron Steinfeld, a professor of human-robot interaction. Serve is intended for sidewalks and Steinfeld says that environment is challenging. People usually walk fast while staring at a smartphone. For a robot, that’s a lot. “We have active research on robot moving socially around walking people,” he says. “And it’s really tricky to do this well.”
Postmates plans to use Serve in Los Angeles at first, and that its intended task is to move small objects over short distances. The robot can travel 30 miles on one charge and is able to carry 50 pounds.
12. What is the function of Serve’s laser radar?
A. To detect surrounding objects and their distances.
B. To take photos of objects in the city.
C. To check if there is a package inside.
D. To help find short-distance delivery places.
13. How does Serve signal to pedestrians?
A. By using its legs. B. By making loud sounds.
C. By eye movements. D. By playing music.
14. What does Aaron Steinfeld think of making robot moving socially around pedestrians?
A. Amusing. B. Impractical. C. Boring. D. Difficult.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Serve: City Long-Distance Robot.
B. Postmates’ Robot Serve for Delivery.
C. How Does Robot Serve Work?
D. Postmates’ New Delivery Tool.

Don’t approach poetry like it’s school. ____17____, which keeps us from developing personal relationships with poetry. So rest easy when reading a poem, due to no quiz at the end!

____19____. “Poetry was an oral art form before anything else” says Choi. “And much information can be gained from reading poems loud.” As an exercise, try reading a poem aloud in different ways: like tasting every word and every syllable; like explaining something tough to someone else. It may help further your knowledge of the poem.
Visualize the poem. A poem might offer visual imagery. If not, go ahead and fill them in with your imagination. “Think of the poem like a movie and you’re the director,” says Mullen, “What colors would you use? ____20____?” These brain pictures will illuminate whatever it is you seem to be getting out of the poem.

Cold December wind blew through Chicago as Lila stood outside an old church, carrying snowflakes that stuck to Lila’ s woolen scarf like frozen (结冰的) tears. Three weeks ago, she and her college friends decided to turn this empty building into a soup kitchen before Christmas. Many homeless people lived near their school, and the students wanted to help. They borrowed two large cooking machines and collected canned food, but everything felt uncertain.
On the first day Lila wiped her sweaty hands on her apron. Only four helpers came instead of twelve — others were busy with exams. Marco, her friend who liked cooking, looked worried. “We need to make 100 meals with just six chickens,” he complained, holding a knife. Through the boarded-up windows, they heard the shuffle of boots outside — people already lining up hours early, their breath fogging the icy air.
At 5:45 pm, one cooking machine stopped working. Lila felt her heart beat fast. She counted their food: 18 cans left for 73 hungry people. Mrs. Donovan, a silver-haired woman who often helped, touched Lila’s arm. “Honey, my hands hurt,” she said. “I can’t peel more potatoes.”
Then a thin man in a green shirt threw his plate on the table. “This isn’t food — it’s dishwater with noodles!” he shouted loudly and angrily. Lila’s vision blurred (模糊) as she scooped more food into his bowl, her “I’m so sorry” drowned by the kitchen’s chaos. That night, she found Marco weeping over a burnt pot, his apron splattered with failed attempts at cream sauce.
The next day, the team had a meeting. Lila, who was good at math, showed them numbers on paper. “We need 25 pounds of meat and 40 pounds of vegetables every day,” she said. “But we only have one-third of that.” The atmosphere seemed frozen, with everyone hanging their heads.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
After a while, Lila raised her head and said with a smile, “We all could turn to others for help.”

D 9. C 10. A 11. B

根据第二段中的“Some of the first images that I had of China as a child were from Hong Kong kung fu films that were extremely popular in Trinidad and Tobago in the 1980s and 1990s. Besides, names of martial arts stars such as Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan and Jet Li were known in every household.(我小时候对中国的最初印象,部分来自于上世纪80年代和90年代在特立尼达和多巴哥广受欢迎的香港功夫片。此外,李小龙、成龙、李连杰等武打明星的名字家喻户晓)”可知,作者儿时对中国的最初印象由香港功夫片和武打明星构成。故选C项。

【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段中的“In today’s world where there seems to be more division than consensus (共识), and where we seem to judge first and ask questions later, film remains a powerful medium and channel for promoting more empathy (共情), mutual understanding and bridging divides across regions despite differences in language and cultural affinities-leading to a greater appreciation of the complexities, richness, and diversity of the human experience.

To Read Poetry Like a Poet
A great poem can be there for you. It can help you process sadness, anger or fear. Or make you feel happy or excited. Franny Choi, an educator, says some poems make her “get out of my chair and shout it from the rooftops”. ____16____
Don’t approach poetry like it’s school. ____17____, which keeps us from developing personal relationships with poetry. So rest easy when reading a poem, due to no quiz at the end!
Don’t worry about “getting it”. People often pressure themselves to interpret a poem, or figure out what the poet conveyed. Don’t do it, says Mullen, a poet and professor. Instead, ask about your opinion of the poem: What overall impression do you get? What ideas float around in mind? “____18____,” says Mullen.
____19____. “Poetry was an oral art form before anything else,” says Choi.
A. Read it out loud
B. What kind of setting is there
C. When was the poem published
D. Poetry always loses something in translation
E. Those overall impressions, I think most of us do get
F. Here are tips to help you meaningfully connect to a poem
G. The way to engage with a poem taught in school is by trying to understand it, master it and take an exam
F 17. G 18. E 19. A 20. B
由上文“A great poem can be there for you. It can help you process sadness, anger or fear. Or make you feel happy or excited. Franny Choi, an educator, says some poems make her “get out of my chair and shout it from the rooftops”.(一首好诗可以陪伴你。
由上文“Don’t approach poetry like it’s school. (不要像在学校里那样对待诗歌)”可知,本空应说明学校里对待诗歌的方式。G 选项“The way to engage with a poem taught in school is by trying to understand it, master it and take an exam (学校里教的理解诗歌的方法是努力理解它、掌握它并参加考试)”与上文衔接紧密,且其中的“in school”与空前的“school”相对应。同时,下文“which keeps us from developing personal relationships with poetry. So rest easy when reading a poem, due to no quiz at the end!(这阻碍了我们与诗歌建立个人联系。所以读诗的时候可以放松,因为最后没有测验!)”进一步说明了学校这种对待诗歌方式的弊端。故选G。
【18题详解】
由上文“Don’t worry about ‘getting it’. People often pressure themselves to interpret a poem, or figure out what the poet conveyed. Don’t do it, says Mullen, a poet and professor. Instead, ask about your opinion of the poem: What overall impression do you get? What ideas float around in mind?(不要担心“理解它”。
由下文““Poetry was an oral art form before anything else,” says Choi. “And much information can be gained from reading poems loud.” As an exercise, try reading a poem aloud in different ways: like tasting every word and every syllable; like explaining something tough to someone else. It may help further your knowledge of the poem.(崔说:“诗歌在成为其他形式之前首先是一种口头艺术形式。大声朗读诗歌可以获得很多信息。”作为一种练习,尝试用不同的方式大声朗读一首诗:比如品味每一个单词和每一个音节;比如向别人解释一些难懂的东西。这可能有助于你进一步了解这首诗)”可知,下文主要强调大声朗读诗歌能获取信息以及有助于了解诗歌。A选项“Read it out loud(大声朗读它)”,直接概括了下文的核心内容,即要大声朗读诗歌。故选A。
由上文““Think of the poem like a movie and you’re the director,” says Mullen, “What colors would you use?”(穆伦说:“把这首诗想象成一部电影,而你是导演,你会用什么颜色?”)”

On the first day, Lila wiped her sweaty hands on her apron.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
After a while, Lila raised her head and said with a smile, “We all could turn to others for help.”

On Christmas Eve, the soup kitchen reopened.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
After a while, Lila raised her head and said with a smile, “We all could turn to others for help.” Her voice was calm and hopeful. “We can reach out to local businesses, community centers, and even use social media to ask for donations and volunteers,” she suggested. Her friends nodded in agreement, inspired by her determination. Marco volunteered to contact his family and friends, while Mrs. Donovan promised to rally support from her church community. They also posted on social media, sharing their story and needs. To their surprise, donations of food and supplies began pouring in, and more volunteers signed up. The atmosphere in the kitchen gradually shifted from despair to hope as they worked together to prepare for the next day.
On Christmas Eve, the soup kitchen reopened. The old church was filled with warmth and light, and the smell of freshly cooked meals filled the air. Tables were set up, and the volunteers moved with purpose, serving hot meals to the long line of people waiting outside. Lila watched as smiles replaced the worried looks on people’s faces. She saw Marco laughing as he dished out portions of chicken stew, and Mrs. Donovan chatting with the guests. Even the man in the green shirt, who had been so angry a couple of day before, was now eating quietly with a look of gratitude, saying cheerfully, “This… this is good.” Lila felt a sense of pride and accomplishment as she realized that their efforts had made a difference.
