Sports are not a modern invention. People around the world have enjoyed exciting and meaningful sports since ancient times. Here are some examples of ancient sports from different cultures.
Egyptian Pharaohs’ Running Race
In ancient Egypt, kings demonstrated their physical strength by running during the Sed Festival. This special event took place after a king had ruled for 30 years. For example, Pharaoh Djoser ran around the temple for a long time to prove he was still healthy and strong.
Minoan Bull-Leaping
The Minoan people created a very dangerous sport called bull-leaping. In this event, athletes would run directly at a charging bull, grab its horns (角) and leap over its back. Wall paintings from the Palace of Knossos show these exciting scenes.
Mesopotamian Wrestling
Ancient Mesopotamians practiced wrestling and boxing. Stone carvings show strong fighters wearing skirts during matches. These matches were intense, with fighters wrestling like wild animals.
Ancient Chinese Archery (射箭)
In the Zhou Dynasty’s royal education, archery was a required skill for men. Competitions, called “sheyi”, were held with strict rules and ceremonies. To win, a person needed both physical skill and qualities such as grace, self-control and respect. These contests often took place in temples and served to promote moral values and social order.
Although ancient sports varied widely in form and intent, they universally highlighted the value of skill. Beyond mere competition, these activities were deeply integrated into their societies, reflecting cultural beliefs and shaping a sense of community.

B
I’m an 18-year-old pre-medical student, tall and good-looking, with two short story books and quite a number of essays to my credit. Why am I singing such praises of myself? Just to explain that the attainment of self-pride comes from a great deal of self-love, and to attain it, one must first learn to accept oneself as one is. That was where my struggle began.
Born and raised in Africa, I had always taken my African origin as burden. My self-dislike was further fueled when my family had to relocate to Norway, where I attended a high school. Compared to all the white girls around me, with their golden hair and delicate lips, I, a black girl, had curly hair and full, red lips. My nose often had a thin sheet of sweat on it, whatever the weather was. I just wanted to bury myself in my shell crying “I’m so different!”
What also contributed to my self-dislike was my occasional stuttering (口吃), which had weakened my self-confidence. It always stood between me and any fine opportunity. I’d taken it as an excuse to avoid any public speaking sessions, and unknowingly let it rule over me.
Fortunately, as I grew older, there came a turning point. One day a white girl caught my eye on the school bus when she suddenly turned back. To my astonishment, she had a thin sheet of sweat on her nose too, and it was in November! “Wow,” I whispered to myself, “this isn’t a genetic disorder after all. It’s perfectly normal.” Days later, my life took another twist. Searching the Internet for stuttering cures, I accidentally learned that such famous people as Isaac Newton and Winston Churchill also stuttered. I felt a weight lift off my shoulders, then an idea suddenly hit me — if I’m smart, I shouldn’t allow my stuttering to stand between me and my success.
Another boost to my self-confidence came days later as I was watching the news about Oprah Winfrey, the famous talk show host and writer — she’s black too! Whenever I think of her story and my former dislike of my color, I’m practically filled with shame.
Today, I’ve grown to accept what I am with pride; it simply gives me feeling of uniqueness. The idea of self-love has taken on a whole new meaning for me: there’s always something fantastic about us, and what we need to do is learn to appreciate it.
24. What affected the author’s adjustment to her school life in Norway?
A. Social discrimination. B. Her appearance.
C. Her changing emotions. D. The climate in Norway.
25. How did the author feel on noticing the similarity between her and the girl on the bus?
A. Shocked and ashamed. B. Confused and terrified.
C. Blessed and proud. D. Amazed and relieved.
26. What lesson did the author learn from the cases of Newton and Churchill?
A. Great minds speak alike. B. Celebrities can’t live with their flaws.
C. Stuttering is no barrier to success. D. Wisdom counts more than hard work.
27. What can we learn from this passage?
A. Pride comes before a fall. B. Comparison is the thief of joy.
C. Every cloud has a silver lining. D. Love and acceptance is the ultimate gift.
C
Have you ever joyously stepped out to your backyard garden, freshly brewed coffee in hand, only to find your cared-for plants and herbs wilted (枯萎的) and dying? Was the soil too dry? Did pests find their way in? During times like these, some frustrated gardeners may wish their fickle ficus (榕树) would just tell them what it needs. A new Microsoft-partnered project in the UK is trying to see if that concept can be demonstrated in the real-world.
Next year, the Royal Horticultural Society in England will show off an “intelligent garden” that uses an AI model to monitor the garden’s environment and inform gardeners when it needs care. Visitors can ask the AI-powered garden questions. The model could then respond with phrases like “I need a bit more water,” or “I could use a haircut” depending on data captured in the soil.
The technical components of the garden are the product of a partnership between AIstart-up Avande and Microsoft. The garden relies on a network of sensors nestled throughout the garden measuring environmental factors like soil moisture, alkalinity (碱度), and nutrient levels as well as wind and projected rainfall. All of that data is then sent to a specially designed AI model at the back of the garden. The model, powered by Microsoft’s Azure Open AI Service, can then analyze those factors and inform gardeners on best feeding, watering, or trimming.
In theory, insights provided by models like this one could help gardeners allocate resources efficiently and avoid over-watering plants before rainfall, both of which can aid in sustainability efforts. Those tools could be a welcome convenience for casual growers or businesses looking to reduce costs. It’s unclear, however, whether even the best models can account for something abnormal and individual plant tendencies with the same level of care as experienced gardeners.
Several currently available apps also use AI to help gardeners identify unknown plants by comparing a photo of them against a large online database. But as past reporting has shown, simply trusting an AI to tell you whether a plant or fungi of unknown origin is safe to eat isn’t wise, and could have dangerous results.
28. What will AI be used to do in gardening according to the text?
A. Look after the plants in place of gardeners.
B. Help the gardeners interact with the plants.
C. Improve the condition of soil in the garden.
D. Design the environmentally-friendly gardens.
29. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. How the intelligent garden works.
B. Why the intelligent garden is popular.
C. How the intelligent garden was invented.
D. What advantages the intelligent garden has.
30. What does the underlined word insights mean in paragraph 4?
A. Experience. B. Data. C. Methods. D. Tests.
31. What is the author’s attitude toward AI’s use in gardening?
A. Unclear. B. Approving. C. Objective. D. Negative.
D
A new study has revealed the vast majority of Australians worry about what might happen to the Great Barrier Reef, the country’s largest natural wonder. Environmental groups warn authorities that bold action is needed now to secure its future.
The report, commissioned by the Great Barrier Reef Foundation (GBRF), shows that the Reef is still one of the world’s most valuable ecosystems, but its survival cannot be guaranteed without major investment and strong climate action. The Reef brings about 9 billion Australian dollars to the economy each year and supports around 77,000 jobs. Economists estimate that, with urgent climate efforts, it could bring another 124 billion dollars in benefits over the next 50 years. But without action, experts warn, it may not survive at all.
Public support for saving the Reef is also strong. A national survey found that 98% of Australians believe losing the Reef would be a “national tragedy,” and nearly three-quarters see it as “irreplaceable.” Nine in ten are worried about climate change, and 78% say protecting the Reef for future generations is very important. “The Reef is too precious to lose,” said GBRF director Anna Marsden, adding that saving it is vital not just for the environment, but also for the millions of people who depend on it.
Scientists report that the Reef has suffered record coral losses in recent years due to warming seas and pollution. Since 2016, five mass bleaching (白化) events have damaged large parts of the Reef, including two in 2024 and 2025. Run-off from farms continues to reduce water quality, making recovery harder.
To save the Reef, the Australian and Queensland governments have launched the “Reef 2050 Plan,” a long-term program to improve water quality and expand protected areas. However, debate continues after Queensland decided to extend coal use beyond 2050. Supporters say the plan is practical, while others warn that continued fossil fuel use puts the Reef’s future at serious risk.
32. What does the GBRF report mainly warn about?
A. The Great Barrier Reef brings less money each year.
B. The Great Barrier Reef is losing its global importance.
C. The Great Barrier Reef’s survival needs urgent action.
D. The Great Barrier Reef will be replaced by new tourist attractions.
33. What is one major threat to the Great Barrier Reef?
A. Overfishing. B. Sea warming. C. Tourism growth. D. Invasive species.
34. Why is the Queensland Government criticized?
A. It wants to use coal for longer. B. It plans to close the Reef to tourists.
C. It ignores the Reef’s economic value. D. It has refused to support the “Reef 2050 Plan”.
35. What is the best title for this text?
A. A Natural Wonder in Danger B. The Future of Coral Farming
C How Tourism Shapes Australia D. Climate Change and Its Harms

After 20 years of teaching, I thought I’d heard every excuse from students trying to get a better grade. But recently I heard a new complaint: “My grade doesn’t reflect the effort I put into this course.” ___36___ In the past, students understood it and they knew “A” required great work. Yet today, Generation Z expect to be rewarded for the quantity of their effort rather than the quality of their knowledge. In surveys, two-thirds of college students say that “trying hard” should be a factor in their grades.
___37___ It’s the result of a misunderstanding about one popular educational theories. Psychologists have long found that rewarding effort helps form a strong work ethic and reinforces learning. ___38___ We’ve gone from praising effort to treating it as an end in itself. We’ve failed to remind them that working hard doesn’t guarantee doing a good job. There’s a reason we award Olympic medals to the athletes who swim the fastest, not the ones who train the hardest. What counts is not mere effort but the progress and result.
The ideal response to a disappointing grade is not to complain that your diligence wasn’t rewarded. ___39___ Trying harder isn’t always the answer. Sometimes it’s working smarter, and other times, it’s working on something else altogether. Devotion is just one of the many contributing factors to achievement. Ability, opportunity and luck count, too.
Now in my classes, students are assessed on the quality of their written essays, class participation, group presentations and final papers or exams. I make it clear that “A” is not granted for effort itself; it is earned through mastery of knowledge. The true measure of learning is not the time and energy you put in. ___40___
A. Teachers are to blame.
B. It is to ask how to improve.
C. This isn’t Generation Z’s fault.
D. “B” may not fully reflect your dedication.
E. It’s the knowledge and skills you acquire.
F. High marks are for excellence, not perseverance.
G. But we’ve taken the practice of celebrating diligence too far.

Last year, when I was walking down the sidewalk on my usual route, I noticed a baby squirrel (松鼠) . Just as soon as the tiny creature started exploring his surroundings, I saw him trying to eat a dead leaf. Obviously, he was hungry, so I told him, “Stay right here, and I’ll be RIGHT back.”
When I returned, the spot was completely empty—no squirrel in sight. But as I spread some sunflower seeds, the baby squirrel reappeared. More amazingly, after enjoying the seeds, he tried to get into my bag and nested in my scarf. “Is he expecting me to take him home? Where is his mother?” I thought.
After several hours of observation by the roadside, I confirmed that this baby squirrel was indeed alone, with no family members around. Finally, I took him home. I spent the next two days basically acting as his mother, helping him eat, drink, and sleep. Despite my best efforts, this baby squirrel still nearly choked to death on a bite of banana.
When I saw the poor squirrel barely clinging to life, my heart almost stopped. In a panic, I rushed to the nearest animal hospital. I was worried all the way, positioning him upside down as I’d seen in pet first-aid videos, but he still showed no reaction. As we arrived at the hospital, the vet (兽医) quickly cleared his throat with a professional thin tube. “Tiny patients crash fast! Fortunately, he is saved!” When I heard her words, my anxious heart finally settled.
After a short break, I felt it okay to take him home. As we walked out of the room, something suddenly caught my squirrel’s attention. Before I could react, he slipped from my scarf, with his eyes fixed on something across the room. There, in a cage, lay an injured adult squirrel. The vet told me that the adult squirrel had been hit by a car and was receiving treatment. Seeing my baby squirrel staring at the adult one carefully, I asked if they might be related. The vet thought it unlikely, but out of curiosity, we decided to find out.

I carefully placed the baby squirrel near the injured adult’s cage.

Anyway, they said I had to do a year’s business course first after high school. I didn’t like it at the time, but later, it made a big difference to me. And the other thing I did during that year was to get a part-time job in the office of a small factory making good quality clothes. Then I did two years at the local art college. I wanted to go to London straight away, but my parents insisted. So I stayed at home until I won a prize for a design which actually gave me a place at a London college for nine months. I went on to spend three wonderful years in Milan. Then I got the job in New York for a year, which was really exciting, but unbelievably stressful. I think it is probably because I was too far away from my family and missed them very much. So, I ended up in London, starting my own company.

以及“The model, powered by Microsoft’s Azure Open AI Service, can then analyze those factors and inform gardeners on best feeding, watering, or trimming.(该模型由微软的Azure开放人工智能服务提供支持,然后可以分析这些因素,并告知园丁最好的喂养、浇水或修剪。)” 故选A项。
根据第三段中“The garden relies on a network of sensors nestled throughout the garden measuring environmental factors like soil moisture, alkalinity (碱度), and nutrient levels as well as wind and projected rainfall. All of that data is then sent to a specially designed AI model at the back of the garden. (花园依靠遍布花园的传感器网络来测量环境因素,如土壤湿度、碱度、营养水平以及风和预计降雨量。然后,所有这些数据被发送到花园后面一个特别设计的人工智能模型。)”以及根据画线词后的内容“…provided by models like this one could help gardeners allocate resources efficiently and avoid over-watering plants before rainfall, both of which can aid in sustainability efforts(像这样的模型提供的……
根据文章倒数第二段“In theory, insights provided by models like this one could help gardeners allocate resources efficiently and avoid over-watering plants before rainfall, both of which can aid in sustainability efforts. Those tools could be a welcome convenience for casual growers or businesses looking to reduce costs. It’s unclear, however, whether even the best models can account for something abnormal and individual plant tendencies with the same level of care as experienced gardeners(从理论上讲,像这样的模型提供的见解可以帮助园丁有效地分配资源,避免在降雨前过度浇水,这两者都有助于可持续发展。

C 33. B 34. A 35. A

A Teachers are to blame.
F 37. C 38. G 39. B 40. E

根据空前“But recently I heard a new complaint: “My grade doesn’t reflect the effort I put into this course.” (但最近我听到了一个新的抱怨:“我的成绩没有体现出我在这门课上付出的努力。”)”以及空后“In the past, students understood it and they knew “A” required great work. Yet today, Generation Z expect to be rewarded for the quantity of their effort rather than the quality of their knowledge.
根据空后“It’s the result of a misunderstanding about one popular educational theories. (这是对一种流行的教育理论产生误解所导致的结果)”可知,此空应表明Z世代的这种想法并非其自身的过错,C选项“This isn’t Generation Z’s fault. (这并不是Z世代的错)”引出后文对该现象成因的分析,符合语境。故选C项。
【38题详解】

(心理学家早就发现,奖励努力有助于培养强烈的职业道德,还能强化学习效果)”以及空后“We’ve gone from praising effort to treating it as an end in itself. We’ve failed to remind them that working hard doesn’t guarantee doing a good job. 我们没能提醒他们,努力并不一定能保证把事情做好)”可知,此空应形成转折,指出如今人们对赞扬努力这件事做得过了头,G选项“But we’ve taken the practice of celebrating diligence too far.
根据空前“The ideal response to a disappointing grade is not to complain that your diligence wasn’t rewarded. (面对不理想的成绩,理想的反应不是抱怨自己的勤奋没有得到回报)”以及空后“Trying harder isn’t always the answer. Sometimes it’s working smarter, and other times, it’s working on something else altogether. (更努力地尝试并不总是解决问题的办法。有时候需要更聪明地学习,还有些时候则需要彻底转向其他方向)”可知,此空应说明面对不理想成绩的正确做法是寻求改进方法,B选项“It is to ask how to improve. (而是应该思考如何改进)”与前文的错误做法形成对比,且引出后文的具体建议,符合语境。故选B项。
【40题详解】
根据空前“The true measure of learning is not the time and energy you put in. (衡量学习的真正标准,不是你投入了多少时间和精力)”可知,此空应点明衡量学习的真正标准是学到的知识和技能,E选项“It’s the knowledge and skills you acquire. (而是你所掌握的知识和技能)”与前文形成“不是……而是……”的逻辑关系,符合语境。故选E项。

第四部分 写作(满分15分)
86. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It warmed my heart to see my baby squirrel reunite with his mother!
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I carefully placed the baby squirrel near the injured adult’s cage. The tiny creature let out a soft, high-pitched chirp immediately. To everyone’s surprise, the adult squirrel, who had been lying quietly with its eyes closed, suddenly lifted its head and fixed its gaze on the baby. It twitched its nose rapidly and responded with a low, gentle sound. The baby squirrel scrambled closer to the cage, pressing its tiny paws against the wire mesh. The vet and I exchanged astonished looks — this was no random reaction. A quick DNA test later confirmed our guess: they were mother and son.
It warmed my heart to see my baby squirrel reunite with his mother! I decided to leave the baby squirrel at the animal hospital so he could stay with his mother during her recovery. Every few days, I visited them with a bag of sunflower seeds, watching as the mother groomed her baby’s fur and the little one snuggled up to her side. A month later, the vet called to tell me the mother squirrel had fully recovered and that they could be released back into the wild. On the release day, I watched them dart into the trees together. As I waved goodbye, I knew I had given them the best gift — a second chance at being a family.
