Arne Murke is crediting his blue jeans with saving his life. The 30-year-old German was thrown off a sailboat in rough seas near New Zealand. Murke says he turned his jeans into a life jacket that kept him afloat for over three hours. He was later rescued by a coast guard crew.
The German was sailing with his brother, who was on his first sailing trip, in Tolaga Bay, on the east coast of New Zealand’s north island. They reportedly had agreed to take the sailboat to Brazil. The trip was uneventful until the sailboat’s boom (帆桁) turned suddenly, hitting Arne Murke and knocking him into the water.
“Luckily, I knew the trick with the jeans,” he told The New Zealand Herald newspaper. “Without the jeans I wouldn’t be here today. They were really the thing that saved me,” Murke added that he took the sailboat delivery job in order to raise money for his 10-month old daughter who lives with her mother in the Philippines. “While I was in the water I was just thinking, I can’t leave my daughter behind without a father. That was the biggest motivation,” he said.
Murke said he tied knots (结) at the end of the legs and pulled them over water to get air inside. He then forced his jeans under water to trap air and create a life jacket. A rescue helicopter found the German about 3 and a half hours after he fell from the sailboat.
Chris Henshaw, the Senior Search and Rescue Coordinator for Rescue Coordination Center New Zealand, said in a statement that the sailboat had communications devices, including radio and emergency beacons (指向标) activated by Murke’s brother, which helped alert rescuers. “Without these devices,” Henshaw noted, “it may have turned out differently”.
4. What’s the most important measure he took to save himself?
A. He turned to his brother for help. B. He made a life jacket to stay afloat.
C. He signaled to the coast guard crew. D. He swam to the shore in three hours.
5. Why did Murke take the trip?
A. To transport jeans to New Zealand. B. To test the boat in rough conditions.
C. To meet his wife in the Philippines. D. To make money for his small daughter.
6. What can we infer from Chris Henshaw’s words?
A. Sailboats at sea should be equipped with alert systems.
B. Emergency beacons are used to guide the victims at sea.
C. Communication devices played a key role in the rescue.
D. The coast guard crew found Murke through his radio call.
7. What does the author want to convey in the text?
A. It’s never too late to correct mistakes. B. God helps those who help themselves.
C. Love between family members never fades. D. Being cautious is better than being sorry.

Sick young ants release a smell to tell worker ants to destroy them to protect the colony (群体) from infection, scientists said Tuesday, adding that queens don’t seem to commit this act of self-sacrifice.
Many animals conceal illness for social reasons. For example, sick humans are known to risk infecting others so they can still go to the office or the clubs. Ant colonies, however, act as one whole group which works to ensure the survival of all. Ant nests are a “perfect place for a disease outbreak to occur because there are thousands of ants moving about over each other,” said Erika Dawson, a behavioral ecologist at the Institute of Science and Technology Austria.
When adult worker ants get an illness that could spread through the colony, they leave the nest to die alone. Young ants, known as pupae, in contrast are still trapped inside a cocoon (茧), making this kind of social distancing impossible.
Scientists had already figured out that when these pupae are seriously ill, there is a chemical change that produces a particular smell. Adult worker ants then gather around, remove the cocoon, bite holes in the pupae and insert (注入) poison, killing both the colony-threatening virus and the pupae.
For the new research, the scientists wanted to figure out whether the pupae were actively saying, “Come and kill me.” First, the scientists collected the smell from the sick pupae. When they applied the smell to healthy pupae in the lab, the workers still destroyed them. Then, the team conducted an experiment showing that the sick pupae only produce the smell when worker ants are nearby, proving it is an intentional signal for destruction.
“While it is a sacrifice, it’s also in their own interest, because it means that their genes are going to survive and be passed on to the next generation,” Dawson said.
8. What does the underlined word “conceal” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Hide. B. Treat. C. Spread. D. Develop.
9. How do adult worker ants deal with seriously sick pupae?
A. They move the pupae out of the cocoons. B. They put poison into the pupae’s body.
C. They produce chemicals to cure the pupae D. They leave the pupae to die themselves.
10. What can we learn from paragraph 5?
A. Worker ants are misled to kill the fit pupae.
B. Worker ants can find faraway sick pupae.
C. The smells of ants differ from one another.
D. Sick pupae produce the smell continuously.
11. What is the text mainly about?
A. Division of labor of ant colonies. B. Ants’ way to choose their genes.
C. Self-sacrifice to save ant colonies. D. Methods to cure sick young ants.
D
Artificial intelligence is fundamentally changing the way modern industries operate, from finance to cybersecurity (网络安全). This transformation is driven by its great potential to increase efficiency and encourage innovation. However, as a powerful technology, it also brings important risks that must be carefully managed while people seek its benefits.
One of the most convincing advantages of AI is improving operational efficiency. By automating (自动化) repetitive and time-consuming (消耗) tasks, AI enhances human productivity, allowing employees to focus on higher-level strategic work. It simplifies workflows, from creating documents to analyzing complex data. This ability to quickly process huge amounts of information allows for faster, data-based decisions while greatly lowering the chance of human error, delivering significant value and freeing up resources.
In the field of cybersecurity, AI provides a more active defense system. It can detect unusual patterns in network traffic more accurately than traditional methods, enabling faster and more precise responses to threats. Furthermore, by examining past data, AI can predict possible attack patterns, helping organizations take preventive steps before threats fully develop. This practical approach is key to identifying and stopping cyberattacks before they cause major damage.
On the other hand, using AI also involves considerable risks, especially regarding data privacy. As AI systems handle enormous amounts of data, they often work with sensitive information, raising important rule-following issues. Without proper management, AI could expose personal data, leading to serious leakage. The lack of complete AI rules in many areas makes this challenge even harder. Moreover, AI itself creates new weaknesses that can be taken advantage of. The disadvantages in cybersecurity often concern its harmful use by cybercriminals. Additionally, when AI systems deal with regulated data, they can face complicated rule-following issues, causing legal and security risks.
In conclusion, AI presents a mix of important rewards and serious risks. While the possible dangers require serious attention, organizations can strategically use AI’s power to increase productivity, improve security, and support growth through strong policies and careful management, thus successfully managing its complexities.
12. How does AI improve operational efficiency according to the text?
A. By boosting innovation and managing risks.
B. By handling finance and cybersecurity work.
C. By providing direct help to do strategic work.
D. By automating tasks and cutting human errors.
13. What is the main function of AI in cybersecurity?
A. It processes complicated data faster.
B. It detects and attacks unusual patterns.
C. It defends against threat in an active way.
D. It helps make strong policies and regulations.
14. Which statement would the author most likely agree with?
A. AI needs to be strictly limited in its use.
B. AI will soon replace most of human jobs.
C. AI values benefits over manageable risks.
D. AI gives rise to actual risks to data privacy.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Impact of AI on Cybersecurity
B. The Balance of AI’s Benefits and Risks
C. The Hidden Dangers of AI Technology
D. The Bright Future of Artificial Intelligence

The afternoon sun shone through the school dining hall windows, casting warm bands of light on the worn tables. Richa, Laira and the other three girls sat close together, their laughter filling the air as they shared a simple treat. Seeing a picture of a beautiful iced cake on a wall-mounted TV, Richa pushed Laira gently, “Look!” The image woke a common desire in them. Soon, they planned to visit the famous Prince Charles Cake Shop that Sunday, pooling (凑) their pocket money — five dollars each — for a special slice.
On Sunday, they met at Gayatri’s house, their coins and paper money gathered into a small, hopeful pile. The walk to the shop was full of lively talk, but when they turned the corner, they saw a crowd spreading onto the path. The shop was full of busy movement, filled with the sweet smell of sugar and butter and the whisper of customers. After placing their small order, the girls found it too crowded and went outside to wait, leaving Richa alone to collect it.
Inside, Richa waited, her fingers drawing lines on the counter. Suddenly, the hurried shop owner gave her a large, nicely wrapped box and the change — 50 dollars. Her breath caught; her heart beat fast. This isn’t correct, she thought, but a louder voice cried, “Good fortune!” She pushed the money deep into her jeans pocket and holding the very big box tightly, she almost ran out of the shop.
Outside she gathered her friends, eyes wide and face red. “Look what happened!” she whispered, showing the money, her voice mixing with guilt and excitement. The others moved closer together, whispering excitedly. Only Laira stayed silent. She took the big box, her fingers discovering the price label: 50 dollars. A heavy feeling formed in her stomach.
“This does not belong to us, Richa,” she stated, her voice quiet but strong, breaking through the happy whispers. “This cake, and this change, is another person’s property. They are likely waiting for it at this moment.” She looked directly into Richa’s challenging stare. Richa objected, arms crossed. “It’s just chance! Why ruin it?” The others became uneasy.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 开头已给出。
Laira stood firm, “If we keep this, I can’t enjoy it with you.”

【答案】8. A 9. B 10. A 11. C

【答案】A Trip to the Countryside: Experiencing Rural Vitality
Last weekend, I took part in a study trip named “Celebrating the Beauty of Harmonious Villages” organized by the Student Union. We visited local villages, enjoyed the beautiful scenery, and learned about traditional culture and new rural development.
This activity was really meaningful. We not only experienced the great changes in the countryside but also gained a better understanding of traditional culture. It broadened our horizons and inspired us to study harder to build our country in the future.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Outside, she gathered her friends, eyes wide and face red.

【答案】
Laira stood firm, “If we keep this, I can’t enjoy it with you.” She looked at each friend, her eyes full of sincerity. “We planned to buy a small slice with our own money, and that’s enough. Keeping what isn’t ours will only bring guilt, not happiness.” Richa bit her lip, clutching the money tightly as guilt slowly replaced excitement. The other girls nodded, realizing Laira was right — they couldn’t let a mistake ruin their friendship or their integrity.
With deep breaths and lowered eyes, the girls agreed to go back to the shop. Richa led the way, her steps hesitant but firm. She explained the mistake to the busy shop owner, who looked relieved and thanked them warmly. They returned the extra change and the big cake, then bought their planned small slices with their own money. Sitting on a bench outside, eating the sweet cake, they laughed — this slice tasted far better, for it was earned with honesty and kept their hearts light.
