The 97-year-old botanist, Margaret Bradshaw, is the chief caretaker of Teesdale’s rarest flowers. “Everything about Teesdale is unique,” says Bradshaw with pride — and the authority of someone who has just written a 288-page book on the subject. Bradshaw has been recording rare plants here since the early 1950s and has witnessed great decreases. Her data was the first to prove that — and the need to do something about it.
The main reason for the decrease of these plants is an unusual one. The number of sheep in Teesdale had been reduced by half by 2000, as the uplands were generally believed there were too many sheep. Bradshaw says while sheep are hunted in some upland areas, reducing herding in Teesdale has been destructive. Longer grass overshadows the delicate (娇嫩) flowers, taking away the light they need to grow. As a result of her findings and her work with farmers who herd the land — as well as Natural England, which manages it — sheep numbers are increasing and the timing of herding is being carefully managed. This has led to the partial recovery of some plants.
At 93, she set up Teesdale Special Flora Research and Conservation Trust to record rare plants. A keen horse rider, at 95, she did a 55-mile horse journey across Teesdale, raising almost $ 10,000 for the Trust. When asked about the secret to longevity, “Just keep going,” she says.
“Keep at it. Don’t sit down and just watch TV.”
“I recognise I’m getting older and I’ve been trying to get more people to take over and do the records. They don’t believe I won’t be here forever,” Bradshaw says. Despite Bradshaw’s guardianship of this land, and the love and energy she has put into saving it, the future here is unknown. The last words of her book speak to this endless loss. “This is our heritage, this unique plant species, mine and yours,” she writes. “In spite of trying, I have failed to prevent its decrease, now it is up to you.”
4. What is Margaret Bradshaw’s main work with the rare plants?
A. Writing a book. B. Preventing their decrease.
C. Collecting their data. D. Directing farmers to grow plants.
5. What contributed to the reduction of rare plants in Teesdale?
A. Not enough sheep. B. Lack of fund.
C. Poor management. D. Too many sheep.
6. What can we learn from Bradshaw’s words in the last paragraph?
A. Unity brings strength. B. Many hands make light work.
C. Youthful at heart, regardless of age. D. Advance what the forerunners began.
7. Which might be a suitable title for the text?
A. Teesdale: Home to Rare Plants B. Battling for Teesdale’s Wildflowers
C. Bradshaw: A 97-Year-Old Gardener D. Exploring Teesdale’s Unique Plants
C
Whether you’re happy with your size or not, the basic fact of life is that we all have to eat. How you choose to raise yourself can make a big difference in how you feel, not only in your body, but about yourself and the world around you.
“I had this babysitter who was a dieter,” said Dr Linda Shiue, an internal medicine physician and trained chef. “She would eat colourless, smell-less food and she was sad all the time.” That isn’t Shiue’s style. She is the first director of culinary (烹饪的) medicine at Kaiser Permanente San Francisco, where she founded Thrive Kitchen, a teaching kitchen inspired by the babysitter. Her classes show people how to use spices (香料) and herbs to flavour seasonal cuisine while following an eating pattern that supports health.
“As a physician who has seen the negative effects of long-term dieting, I encourage people to reconsider their relationship to food as a source of pleasure. This can be a very arduous task considering the diet-supporting messaging that surrounds us,” Shiue said in an email.
What can you do to enjoy your food?” Many of us have experienced shame or guilt around food, and a lot of that is a product of our culture and what the fashion and whole dieting industries have created,” Shiue said. “I think that most people at some point feel like, ‘Oh, I shouldn’t eat that. That’s bad for me.’ Actually, there’s no need to feel bad about food choices. Everything has to be in moderation, and that means there’s room for the occasional indulgence (放纵).”
Restrictive (限制的) diets are having the opposite effect. “Research shows that the best eating plan is the one any given individual can stick with — a sustainable (可持续的) lifestyle change,” Shiue said.
In Shiue’s opinion, food is more than a way to simply stay alive. “Nutrition is only one small part of food,” she said. “Food is also an expression of love and care. So enjoy your food!”
8. What inspired Dr Linda Shiue to found Thrive Kitchen?
A. Her training as a chef.
B. Her own eating habits and lifestyle.
C. Her work as an internal medicine physician.
D. Her experience with a babysitter who was a dieter.
9. What does the underlined word “arduous” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Meaningful. B. Difficult. C. Abstract. D. Promising.
10. According to Shiue, what should people do to enjoy their food?
A. Always eat what you like.
B. Follow fashion and dieting trends.
C. Stop judging food as good or bad.
D. Completely avoid restrictive diets.
11. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. People should eat healthy food to stay alive.
B. People should reconsider the role of nutrition.
C. How and what people eat affects their well-being.
D. Long-term dieting has negative effects on people’s health.
D
The feeling of magic around Christmas is something many of us remember from childhood and spend the rest of our lives trying to recreate. Warm childhood memories of writing letters to Santa Claus still lie in our heart. There’s something about the “Christmas feeling” that everyone recognizes. But why is it so hard to experience it as an adult? Has Christmas changed? Is it really a Christmas feeling, or just a feeling of missing the past?
Katie Carhart, a clinical psychologist, said, “As adults, they feel different, because instead of just enjoying the joy, they’re making it. They’re responsible for making the magic and continuing the traditions — from cooking for hours, shopping to wrapping gifts until late at night, which comes with pressure, high expectations and stress.” She also explained, “Adults are not always missing Christmas itself as much as they’re missing how it felt when life was simpler and they weren’t responsible for making it happen.”
A recent survey from major U.S. mental health provider, LifeStance Health, found that 75 percent of respondents (调查对象) think some planned holiday gatherings feel like duties rather than something they want to attend. It also found that 69 percent of respondents feel at least some pressure to appear happier than they actually are during the holidays, with 34 percent of millennials (千禧一代) and 35 percent of Gen Z reporting a high degree of pressure.
However, Marcum, a psychologist at AMFM Healthcare, encourages adults to do things to make the time feel more magical and less stressful. Consider the things that mean the most and attach primary importance to them. He also advises people to set boundaries and not to feel the need to attend every social event, hit every holiday item on the bucket list. Setting boundaries helps to reduce burnout.
12. Why does the author mention childhood memories of Christmas?
A. To explain why people try to recreate the magic.
B. To contrast past warmth with present difficulty.
C. To show Christmas is the most important festival.
D. To prove children enjoy Christmas more than adults.
13. What do adults actually miss according to Katie Carhart?
A. The simplicity of childhood life.
B. Making delicious holiday meals.
C. The changed Christmas traditions.
D. Buying presents for family members.
14. Why does the author list the numbers in paragraph 3?
A. To show gatherings are popular.
B. To prove holiday stress is common.
C. To explain avoidance of social events.
D. To compare different age-group pressures.
15. What is Marcum’s advice to avoid holiday burnout?
A. Stick to traditions firmly.
B. Prepare holiday items early.
C. Solve key things and set limits.
D. Attend as many events as possible.

【答案】4. C 5. A 6. D 7. B

根据第一段中“Bradshaw has been recording rare plants here since the early 1950s and has witnessed great decreases. Her data was the first to prove that —and the need to do something about it.”(布拉德肖从20世纪50年代初就开始记录这里的珍稀植物,并见证了它们的大幅减少。她的数据是第一个证明这一点的人,也证明了对此采取措施的必要性。)可知,布拉德肖在珍稀植物方面的主要工作是收集它们的数据。故选C项。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“The main reason for the decrease of these plants is an unusual one. The number of sheep in Teesdale had been reduced by half by 2000,as the uplands were generally believed there were too many sheep. Bradshaw says while sheep are hunted in some upland areas, reducing herding in Teesdale has been destructive. Longer grass overshadows the delicate(娇嫩)flowers, taking away the light they need to grow.”(这些植物减少的主要原因是一个不寻常的原因。 故选A项。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段““This is our heritage, this unique plant species, mine and yours, “she writes. “In spite of trying, I have failed to prevent its decrease, now it is up to you.””(“这是我们的遗产,这种独特的植物物种,我的和你的,”她写道。“尽管我努力了,但还是没能阻止它的减少,现在就看你的了。”)可推知,从最后一段布拉德肖的话中我们能了解到,她希望推进先行者开创这个事业。故选D项。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章大意以及最后一段““I recognise I’m getting older and I’ve been trying to get more people to take over and do the records. “In spite of trying, I have failed to prevent its decrease, now it is up to you.””(“我意识到我年纪越来越大了,我一直在努力让更多的人接手并做记录。
【答案】8. D 9. B 10. C 11. C

C To show Christmas is the most important festival.
【答案】12. B 13. A 14. B 15. C

【答案】
What Makes a Life Truly Successful?
How should we define a successful life? The words of Albert Einstein provide a timeless perspective. He urged us to “become a person of value” rather than merely one of success. I believe true success lies not in external recognition, but in the lasting value we create for others.
Consider Tu Youyou. Her success wasn’t defined by fame, but by decades of persistent research aimed at saving lives. The value of her work — the countless lives saved by artemisinin — is what makes her achievement profound and enduring.
This teaches me that the most meaningful path is to focus on contributions. I hope to build my future on this principle.

The summer after sixth grade, Charley and Tad were swimming happily at a neighbor’s pool. But when Charley dove into the water from the edge, he hit the concrete bottom of the swimming pool and was badly hurt. Soon he was rushed away in the screaming ambulance. The doctor said he had seriously broken his leg and would stay at hospital for several weeks. When Tad went to visit him in the hospital, Charley was in a low mood, unwilling to talk to others.
When Charley got out of the hospital, Tad visited him a few times, chatting and playing video games with him, but things just were not the same. Charley was still in low spirits. Meanwhile, Tad made friends at school, boys who enjoyed the things he and Charley used to do. Still, he felt sad and guilty for not spending more time with Charley. He wanted to help Charley and be the same good friend like before, but it was hard.
Charley came back to middle school in the fall but he had a tough time. Tad helped him get to class on time by pushing his wheelchair, but sometimes, Charley had to find someone else if Tad was at ball practice, or he would be late.
One day Charley dropped his book. As he tried to lean (倾斜) down and pick it up, he fell out of his wheelchair. Tad and one of his classmates helped him back into his chair. Charley wasn’t hurt, but he was so embarrassed that he didn’t speak to anyone the rest of the day. Another time, Charley tried to get through the gym door, but it closed on him. He was trapped between the door and the wall until someone helped him. With each passing day, Charley became sadder and sadder.

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Tad realized that he couldn’t be by Charley’s side every single second. Out of his worry about Charley, Tad felt it was urgent to talk to their classmates. That afternoon, Tad called a meeting and shared Charley’s difficulties and his own feelings of guilt. He suggested that everyone take turns to help Charley with small tasks, like opening doors or carrying books. To his relief, the whole class agreed immediately. The next day, when Charley arrived at school, he was surprised to find a group of classmates waiting for him with warm smiles. They formed a “buddy system” to ensure he never felt alone or embarrassed again.
With the joint efforts of his classmates, Tad sensed something had changed. Charley’s eyes, once filled with sadness, now held a light of hope. He began to join conversations during breaks and even laughed at the boys’ jokes. Little by little, Charley stopped seeing himself as “the boy in the wheelchair” and started seeing himself as part of the group again. Even better, Charley no longer hesitated to ask for help, and he was no longer embarrassed by his situation. Tad finally understood that true friendship isn’t about constant presence, but about lifting someone up by building a supportive circle. Their bond, forged in hardship, became a lifelong lesson in kindness.
