Do your family members often share conversations with each other during dinner? Or do you use phones at the table? If it’s the latter, you’re not alone. A new study by The Week Junior magazine has found that these conversations are not happening very often. This is mainly because people spend more time on screens, and families are also very busy.
The study carried out a survey of 2,000 families in the UK with children between 8 and 16 years old. Although many families say they sit down to enjoy a family meal every day, 77% of the parents also say they use phones at the dinner table. Just over half of children use their devices (设备) while they’re eating, and many say they like eating while watching TV. Children aren’t the only ones on their devices, though. The results found that 40% of the children have to ask their parents to put their phones down at the table.
Most of the children taking part in the survey want to have more conversations at the table. Lots of them enjoy discussing different topics, including what’s in the news and what’s happening on the school playground. Also,83% of the children say they prefer having these conversations with their parents face-to-face instead of over the phone.
Talking with family members is very important for children. ▲ . Dr Elizabeth Kilbey, a psychologist (心理学家) says family conversations during mealtimes strengthen relationships and build children’s confidence and communication skills.
Vanessa Harris, editor (编辑) of The Week Junior, agrees that conversations at the dinner table are really important for the whole family. “That’s why we have our ‘Something worth talking about’ activity,” she says. “We want to encourage all families to take time to talk.”

A new study by The Week Junior magazine has found that these conversations are not happening very often. This is mainly because people spend more time on screens, and families are also very busy.
The study carried out a survey of 2,000 families in the UK with children between 8 and 16 years old. Although many families say they sit down to enjoy a family meal every day, 77% of the parents also say they use phones at the dinner table. Just over half of children use their devices (设备) while they’re eating, and many say they like eating while watching TV. Children aren’t the only ones on their devices, though. The results found that 40% of the children have to ask their parents to put their phones down at the table.
Most of the children taking part in the survey want to have more conversations at the table. Lots of them enjoy discussing different topics, including what’s in the news and what’s happening on the school playground. Also,83% of the children say they prefer having these conversations with their parents face-to-face instead of over the phone.
