It’s not that I’m addicted to it, or have important calls, but I need the alarm to wake me up every morning. W: Yeah, but that’s where the risk is. Today, we’ve invited Dr. Caspar Melville, a lecturer from the University of London. Dr. Melville started out as a music journalist for a black music magazine called Blues and Soul. In 1992, he moved to San Francisco, and founded a jazz magazine named On the One with some friends. They did a really good job, though there was not a lot of money in it. In 1997, he moved back to London and started teaching, and made the decision to find another way to write about music. He grew up in London. He feels that the music in London clubs has formed him, but unfortunately, it has been seriously undervalued by the academic world. In black music studies, jazz has received great attention, but dance music has been largely ignored. His book, It’s a London Thing, is meant to change that situation. So let’s welcome Dr. Melville to share with us his ideas in the book. A Hollywood Bus Tours: Experience Los Angeles with Your Local Sightseeing Experts! 根据Private L.A. Tours标题下“Our private tours are great for small, medium, and large groups that come together for personal or professional experiences. 根据标题“Hollywood Bus Tours: Experience Los Angeles with Your Local Sightseeing Experts! 故选A项。 B I first felt it when my ottoman (箱式凳) broke. It’s one of those classic college storage ottomans and I guess the wear and tear from not properly putting back the cover finally caused the seat to cave in. I was annoyed. My ottoman was broken. And my next thought was, “Well, it’s not worth buying a new one since I’ll be leaving soon anyway.” And there it was. Suddenly, I crossed the threshold (门槛): I was so close to the expiration date that it wasn’t worth replacing broken things. With this date approaching, there is an urge to make the most of things while you can. Pre-graduation must-do lists spring from nowhere. Mistakes are admitted. Risks are taken. What was once a foreign, formless concept is suddenly staring you in the face: graduation is here. It’s a frightening thing, but a beautiful one. It’s a reminder to live life to the fullest and not to leave regrets behind. The logical knowledge that all things end is no match for the natural human capacity for adaptation. But there is a wonderful, brief period of time when the feeling finally sinks in, and suddenly the here and now is real, limited, and special. Small things become big to us seniors now: walking to class on a nice day, a kind professor, a joke with friends. I’ve only been able to find this feeling a few times in my life, every time on the edge between something old and something just beginning. But each time, I hold onto it as a reminder that with every ending, no matter how bitter or how sweet, there are some things worth holding onto and others worth letting go. It’s a reminder that these moments that I’m suddenly grateful for or these opportunities that I’m suddenly ready to seize were here for much longer than I was able to appreciate them, and that in my next phase of life, it’s worth slowing down to make the most of what I have. 24. What does the broken ottoman remind the author of? A. His attachment to it. B. The coming graduation. C. His memory of college. D. The regular use of it. 25. What does the underlined word “expiration” mean in paragraph 2? A. Extension. B. Exam. C. Expectation. D. End. 26. Why do small things become huge to those seniors? A. They feel time is running out. B. They hope to graduate on time. C. They have found a new hobby. D. They regret wasting their days. 27. What does the author call on people to do? A. Try to adapt to new environments. B. Value and experience the present. C. Avoid feeling bitter about changes. D. Get ready for the future in advance. B 25. D 26. A 27. 根据第二段“What was once a foreign, formless concept is suddenly staring you in the face: graduation is here.(曾经那个陌生且模糊的概念,此刻竟赫然呈现在你眼前:毕业时刻到了)”可知,这把损坏的脚凳让作者意识到毕业临近了。 根据第一段“Well, it’s not worth buying a new one since I’ll be leaving soon anyway. 根据第三段“But there is a wonderful, brief period of time when the feeling finally sinks in, and suddenly the here and now is real, limited, and special. Small things become big to us seniors now: walking to class on a nice day, a kind professor, a joke with friends.(但会有一段短暂而美妙的时光,此时那种感觉终于在我们心中深深扎根,突然间,此时此刻变得真实、有限且特别起来。 故选A。 根据最后一段“It’s a reminder that these moments that I’m suddenly grateful for or these opportunities that I’m suddenly ready to seize were here for much longer than I was able to appreciate them, and that in my next phase of life, it’s worth slowing down to make the most of what I have.(这提醒我们,那些让我突然心怀感激的时刻,或者那些我突然准备好要抓住的机会,其实一直存在的时间比我能够充分领略它们的美好所要长得多。 B。 C Imagine dining at your favorite restaurant, seated at the best table — next to a window with great views. It is nice and quiet, but the joy experienced during the first hour fades over time. The reason?Habituation. That’s our brain’s tendency to respond less and less to things that are constant, that don’t change. Briefly moving to a noisier area can bring about dishabituation, making the luxury of your window seat feel fresh and more appreciated when you return. For another example, consider vacations. A few years ago, Tali, an employee in a travel company, went on a work trip to a sunny resort in the Dominican Republic. She wondered if people had a better time at the start of their trips. She interviewed people worldwide and asked them to rate their feelings throughout their holidays in the survey. The data revealed that joy peaked 43 hours in. At the end of day two was when they were happiest. Thereafter it was all downhill. Even when they returned home, many still benefited from a warm holiday afterglow (回味). But within a week, they adjusted to normal life, making it hard to detect any vacation effect on their mood. This evidence suggests that you might benefit most from several small trips spread through the year, rather than one long escape. That way, you will experience the pleasure more often. What about unpleasant experiences? Should you divide those up too? Most people want to bear the unpleasantness bit by bit. When researchers asked people whether they would like a break from a bad smell or just bear it all at once and be done with it, 90 people said,“Breaks, please!”. The vast majority — 82 out of 119 — also said they wanted a break from an annoying noise. However, this is incorrect.Breaks interrupted their natural habituation to the unwelcome stimulus. For unpleasant tasks, it’s wiser not to chop them up. Otherwise, when you return, things seem worse. The results of psychological experiments are clear, however, and being mindful of habituation’s powerful effect could help us all experience a bit less pain and a little more pleasure. 28. How does the author introduce the concept of habituation? A. By giving a vivid example. B. By listing specific numbers. C. By illustrating cause and effect. D. By providing a theoretical model. 29. What does Tali’s survey show? A. The ratings of vacation. B. The influence of vacation. C. The reasons for happiness. D. The peak time of happiness. 30. Which of the following will the author probably agree with? A. Fresh weekend trips. B. A regular walking route. C. Breaks from cleaning the toilet. D. Frequent tasting of a delicious dish. 31. What is the main purpose of the passage? A. To explain how to avoid habituation in daily life. B. To introduce the concept of habituation and its influences. C. To compare people’s reactions to pleasant and unpleasant things. D. To present research findings on holiday and work experience. A 29. D 30. A 31. 根据第一段中“Imagine dining at your favorite restaurant, seated at the best table — next to a window with great views. It is nice and quiet, but the joy experienced during the first hour fades over time. The reason? 故选A。 根据第二段中“She interviewed people worldwide and asked them to rate their feelings throughout their holidays in the survey. The data revealed that joy peaked 43 hours in. At the end of day two was when they were happiest.(她采访了世界各地的人,并让他们在调查中对自己整个假期的感觉进行评分。 根据第三段中“This evidence suggests that you might benefit most from several small trips spread through the year, rather than one long escape. That way, you will experience the pleasure more often.(这些证据表明,一年中分散进行几次小旅行可能比一次长时间的逃避更有益。 故选A。 通读全文,尤其是根据第一段中“That’s our brain’s tendency to respond less and less to things that are constant, that don’t change. Briefly moving to a noisier area can bring about dishabituation, making the luxury of your window seat feel fresh and more appreciated when you return.(这是我们大脑对恒定不变的事物反应越来越少的倾向。 B。 D The dawn chorus of birds has inspired poets and nature lovers for thousands of years, but the reason why birds start the day this way is a lasting mystery. Now, a series of experiments in zebra finches (斑胸草雀) suggests that while darkness prevents singing, birds build up a stronger motivation to sing in the night that causes them to burst into song at dawn. Anil Kamath and his team members studied laboratory-raised zebra finches in carefully controlled lighting conditions to control the timing of light and dark cycles. The team first pushed back the time at which the finches were exposed to sudden bright light to 3 hours later than the actual dawn. The birds were awake but stayed silent in the artificial darkness, and when the lights eventually did come on, the birds sang more intensely than usual. When the lights came on 3 hours earlier than the actual dawn, the birds still broke into a chorus, but without the same intensity as when they were forced to wait. “In other words, the longer the period of time between when the birds wake up and when the light begins is, the more intense the chorus becomes,” Kamath says. The team also analysed the birds’ songs to see how these changed over the course of the day. They found there were rapid shifts in the structure of the songs in the first hour after dawn, compared with the second hour. “Due to the absence of singing during the night, the vocal motor system and song-acoustic structure may slightly become worse, and the dawn chorus serves to quickly restore them,” says Kamath. While this study only looks at one species, similar drivers may apply to other bird species. But Kamath urges caution. “There are many differences between species in how and when they sing in the dawn chorus,” he says, “and this explains why 11 different theories have been proposed to understand the phenomenon.” Kamath advises broadening the range of species to be studied in the future. 32. How did the researchers conduct the experiment? A. By adjusting light exposure time. B. By recording birds across seasons. C. By training the birds to sing on time. D. By changing the birds’ living space. 33. What does Kamath’s team find about zebra finches? A. Their songs are relatively stable. B. Darkness holds back their singing desire. C. Their waking time affects chorus intensity. D. Night singing is good for their vocal system. 34. What is Kamath’s suggestion about? A. Choice of new research methods. B. Possible direction for further study. C. Need to involve more researchers. D. Potential application of the findings. 35. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. How Light Affects Birds’ Routine B. Theories about the Dawn Chorus C Zebra Finches: A Model for Bird Studies D. Why Birds Burst into Song at Dawn 【答案】32. A 33. C 34. B 35. 根据第二段中“Anil Kamath and his team members studied laboratory-raised zebra finches in carefully controlled lighting conditions to control the timing of light and dark cycles. The team first pushed back the time at which the finches were exposed to sudden bright light to 3 hours later than the actual dawn. 和“When the lights came on 3 hours earlier than the actual dawn, the birds still broke into a chorus, but without the same intensity as when they were forced to wait. 故选A项。 根据第二段中Kamath所说的话“In other words, the longer the period of time between when the birds wake up and when the light begins is, the more intense the chorus becomes (换句话说,鸟儿醒来与光线开始之间的时间间隔越长,合唱就越强烈。)” 根据最后一段中“Kamath advises broadening the range of species to be studied in the future. 通读全文,尤其是第一段中“The dawn chorus of birds has inspired poets and nature lovers for thousands of years, but the reason why birds start the day this way is a lasting mystery. Understanding Risk Awareness Risk awareness is an interesting aspect of human mind, influencing decisions from daily activities to major life choices. Individuals often judge wrongly risks, either overstating or understating them. ____36____ For instance, flying is in terms of statistics safer than driving, yet many are more worried about flying. This difference is largely due to what experts in mind study refer to as the availability mental trick, a type of mental shortcut in which events easy to remember, such as incidents involving planes, control our thoughts. ____37____ Some societies accept risk-taking by valuing adventure and new ideas, while others put safety first and act with caution. These attitudes are shaped by historical experiences, economic steadiness, and societal rules. ____38____ In countries with high economic unfairness, people may take more risks because they have fewer resources, fewer opportunities, and feel they have little to lose. In contrast, rich societies might avoid risks to maintain their present situation and protect property. Moreover, media coverage greatly alters risks as they are seen. ____39____ Shocking stories about rare but very destructive events create a twisted image of reality. Public campaigns and education fight against this by providing balanced information, helping individuals make wise decisions. ____40____Understanding the mind behind risk awareness allows people making policies to design better plans for public safety and health. A. Economic conditions also play a part in shaping risk attitudes. B. In fact, we make judgments about various risks every single day. C. This is why it's important to get information from reliable sources. D. People in different societies have completely opposite views on risk. E. Cultural backgrounds deeply influence how people view and react to risks. F. Media tends to focus on dramatic events, ignoring ordinary but safe situations. G. This difference is largely due to what experts in mind study refer to as the availability mental trick, a type of mental shortcut in which events easy to remember, such as incidents involving planes, control our thoughts.(例如,从数据来看,坐飞机比开车更安全,可很多人却对坐飞机感到更多担忧。 G项“Such misjudgments often come from mental habits we use to simplify thinking.(这种误判往往源于我们用来简化思考的心理习惯。)” 【37题详解】 由下文“Some societies accept risk-taking by valuing adventure and new ideas, while others put safety first and act with caution. In contrast, rich societies might avoid risks to maintain their present situation and protect property.(在经济不公现象突出的国家,人们可能会更愿意冒险,因为他们拥有的资源和机会本就寥寥,也觉得自己没什么可失去的。 A项“Economic conditions also play a part in shaping risk attitudes.(经济状况也在塑造风险态度方面发挥着作用。)” 故选A项。 【39题详解】 由上文“Moreover, media coverage greatly alters risks as they are seen.(此外,媒体报道极大地改变了人们对风险的认知。)”和下文“Shocking stories about rare but very destructive events create a twisted image of reality.(关于罕见但极具破坏性事件的骇人报道,营造出扭曲的现实印象。)” F项“Media tends to focus on dramatic events, ignoring ordinary but safe situations.(媒体往往关注戏剧性事件,忽视普通但安全的情况。)”符合语境,该句承接前文的媒体影响,“focus on dramatic events”对应下文的“Shocking stories about rare but very destructive events”,解释了媒体扭曲风险认知的原因,逻辑清晰。故选F项。 【40题详解】 由上文“Public campaigns and education fight against this by providing balanced information, helping individuals make wise decisions.(公共宣传和教育通过提供平衡的信息来对抗这种现象,帮助人们做出明智的决定。)”和下文“Understanding the mind behind risk awareness allows people making policies to design better plans for public safety and health.(理解风险意识背后的心理机制,能让政策制定者为公共安全和健康制定更好的计划。)” C项“This is why it's important to get information from reliable sources.(这就是为什么从可靠来源获取信息至关重要。)” My story in China began with a heartbeat of panic at Chengdu airport. ____41____ and knowing no Chinese, I entered a new world. However unpleasant I felt the places were, I decided to apply for a part-time job at a popular restaurant. The reason was simple: I needed money. I wanted to join a camping trip to the Blue Mountains with my friends, but that would cost about 150 dollars. “You have to pay for entertainment by yourself,” my parents said. So I applied, and Mr. Smith, the boss of the restaurant, allowed me to have a try. My job was super easy and boring: the newly prepared dishes would be put at the counter between the kitchen and dining room, and it was my duty to deliver them to the right customers. The first few days were tiring but OK. However, setbacks soon followed as I struggled to keep pace during a particularly busy lunch rush. I awkwardly spilled a tray of drinks, making loud noises and the floor messy. I was embarrassed and began to feel nervous. One evening, I mixed up orders for a large party, causing chaos and frustration. I felt desperate. I screwed everything up. Then I heard Mr. Smith call me, and I went into his office with my head low. To my surprise, he didn’t blame me. Instead, he made me a cup of coffee. “Relax, young man,” he said. “Try to smile. Things always go wrong if you can’t really enjoy what you’re doing. Feel the fun in the job, and you’ll be OK!” I thought he was right. The next day when I was working, I glimpsed into the kitchen and was amazed: in the narrow and crowded space everyone was busy — the chefs swirling (翻动) pans, the manager yelling customers’ requirements, others coming and going with dishes to deliver — but everything went smoothly without any lumping or bumping. This was incredible! My attitudes towards the restaurant job began to change. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ On the last day of my contract, I went into Mr. Smith’s office again when I finished my job. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One possible version: My attitudes towards the restaurant job began to change. I smiled to everyone I met, and they returned me with warmer smiles, which made me relaxed and even more concentrated on my job. Following the smiles were natural conversations, jokes and laughter, and an air of harmony was created where I worked. I still made some mistakes like forgetting the change or wrong deliveries, but they were easily corrected with a little kind reminding. I even tried helping out in the kitchen preparing the food. “You can be a good chef!” They encouraged me. Why not? Who knew! On the last day of my contract, I went into Mr. Smith’s office again when I finished my job. I thanked him for giving me the job opportunity, especially for forgiving me when I caused chaos. My gratitude was sincere, for the experience not just greatly promoted my understanding of restaurant jobs, but was beneficial to anything else I would do. In return, Mr. Smith thanked me for my job performance, and paid me the salary that I needed for my camp trip. My father was right: I had to earn it by myself, because what I gained was a lot more. 词汇激活 行为类 ①遇到:meet/encounter ②专注于:concentrate on/focus on ③创造:create/generate ④促进:promote/facilitate/advance ⑤收获:gain/attain/achieve 情绪类 ①放松的:relaxed/relieved ②感激:gratitude/gratefulness 【点睛】[高分句型1] I smiled to everyone I met, and they returned me with warmer smiles, which made me relaxed and even more concentrated on my job. B I first felt it when my ottoman (箱式凳) broke. C Avoid feeling bitter about changes. D. Get ready for the future in advance. C Imagine dining at your favorite restaurant, seated at the best table — next to a window with great views. A By giving a vivid example. D The dawn chorus of birds has inspired poets and nature lovers for thousands of years, but the reason why birds start the day this way is a lasting mystery. Theories about the Dawn Chorus C. Zebra Finches: A Model for Bird Studies D. So I applied and Mr. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $听力考试正式开始。Excuse me, is there a flower . shop nearby?
