When checking in, you will need to present a valid (有效的) passport, PRC foreign long-term resident ID card, or another form of identification.
Transportation
For travel within/around cities: DiDi covers cities/ suburbs, with advance destination input recommended. Subways have English signage and announcements ready in stations. Besides traditional ticket buys, Alipay and international cards are accepted. Shared bikes suit short rides. In 2015, Brian Peterson and his wife moved to Santa Ana, California. Outside their apartment, a homeless man often shouted on the street, sometimes keeping them awake. Peterson, a car designer, would pass him but they never spoke.
One day, while reading a book about the power of love in action, he was troubled again. Inspired by the book’s message, Peterson decided to go outside and introduce himself. In that conversation, he learned the man’s name was Matt Faris, who had come to California for his music dream but ended up homeless for over a decade.
Even though Peterson, a graduate of an Institute of Art, hadn’t painted for years, inspired by the life inside of Faris’ story, he asked to paint Faris’ portrait (肖像). Faris agreed. This led to the start of Faces of Santa Ana, a nonprofit organization that befriends and paints portraits of unhoused people. He chose colors based on the subject’s life story, creating touching portraits.
Peterson sells each portrait for a few thousand dollars, putting half into what he calls a “love account (账户)” for his model, and then helps people use the money to get back on their feet. Many use the donations for medical care, hotel rooms and food.
Over the eight years, Peterson has painted 41 portraits. But there’s more to the finished products than the money they bring to someone who’s down and out. He’s discovered that the buyers tend to connect to the story of the person in the painting, finding similarities and often friendship with someone they might have otherwise overlooked.
“People often tell me, ‘I was the one that would cross the street. But I see homeless people differently now,’” Peterson says. “I didn’t know that would happen.”
4. What encouraged Peterson to paint for Faris?
A. A book about love in action.
B. His long-time interest in painting.
C. The inspiration from Faris’ life story.
D. A wish to help Faris realize his dream.
5. What role does “love account” play?
A. To keep nonprofits running.
B. To unite more homeless people.
C. To help the homeless rebuild lives.
D To provide free houses for the homeless.

Kids who use social media score lower on reading and memory tests, compared to those who use little or no social media. The findings, published in JAMA, show a link between social media use and weaker cognition (认知) in teenagers.
Led by Dr. Jason Nagata, the study used data from the Adolescent (青春期的) Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study. This ongoing research has been tracking over 6,000 children from ages 9-10 into early teens. They divided kids into three groups based on their social media use habits: little to no use (58%), gradual increase to about an hour daily by age 13 (37%), and a “high increasing” group spending three or more hours daily by age 13 (6%). All groups took cognitive functioning tests, including reading and vocabulary tests.
Importantly, even those using about one hour of social media daily performed 1 to 2 points lower on reading and memory tasks compared to non-users. The high-use group scored 4 to 5 points lower.
Psychologist Sheri Madigan noted this “dosage effect” (剂量效应) — problems appear even with small doses. Though small now, these gaps may widen as teens increase social media use in later adolescence. And another recent research shows that hours on social media increase later in adolescence, notes Nagata. “We would expect that when they hit age 15, 16, 17, their use will be much higher,” which might lead to even larger gaps in cognition and learning in later years, he adds.
Adolescence is an important period for brain development. Heavy social media users’ brains become more sensitive to the kinds of likes, comments and rewards they might get from those of the same age. This may explain why their brains change less for other necessary learning tasks.
The new study’s findings strongly support the need for age-specific rules, such as age limits on social media apps. Denmark is not allowing kids under 15 to use it, and Australia is requiring companies to prevent accounts for those under 16. Madigan hopes this will create a beneficial “trickle effect” for children globally.
8. What is the main finding of the study?
A. Short screen time hardly affects teens.
B. Social media effects decrease later in teens.
C. Social media use may weaken teen’s cognition.
D. Habits of kids’ using social media are changing.
9. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The method of the study. B. The purpose of the test.
C. The results of the research. D. The application of the data.
10. What does the phrase “dosage effect” suggest about social media?
A. It works just like medicine. B. Even small use causes problems.
C. Its effects grow with years. D. Its effect keeps unchanged over time.
11. What is Madigan’s attitude towards the policies in some countries?
A. Positive. B. Concerned. C. Doubtful. D. Uncaring.
【答案】8. C 9. A 10. B 11. A

More than a fifth of the global ocean has become darker over the past two decades, according to University of Plymouth research.
The process, known as “ocean darkening”, happens when things in the top part of the ocean change, which stops sunlight from reaching far below the surface.
The study, published in Global Change Biology, found 21% of the global ocean had become darker between 2003 and 2022. And more than 9% of the ocean — an area similar in size of Africa — had seen light reduced by over 50 meters, with a further 2.6% experiencing a reduction over 100 meters.
Researchers believed reasons for ocean darkening were factors such as changes in the growth of algae (藻类), warmer sea surface temperatures and artificial light. Dr Thomas Davies, associate professor of Marine Conservation, said: “There has been research showing how the surface of the ocean has changed colour over the last 20 years. But our results show that such changes cause widespread darkening, which makes it harder for animals that need sunlight or moonlight to live and reproduce.”
While the exact effects of the changes were not wholly clear, Dr. Davies stated that ocean darkening could affect the air humans breathe, the fish they eat, and the world’s ability to fight climate change. Professor Tim Smyth warned that animals depending on light could become closer to the surface, increasing competition for food and possibly causing fundamental (根本性的) changes in entire marine ecosystem (海洋生态系统). “Our findings should be a real concern for everyone,” Dr. Davies stressed.
Dealing with this challenge requires an integrated effort. Scientists stress reducing greenhouse gas emissions is fundamental to slowing ocean warming. At the same time, improving the adaptability of marine ecosystems is equally important to help them deal with these changes. Strengthening global monitoring through satellites and other observations is also seen as important for tracking these changes. We need to take collective action to stop this trend, which threatens both marine biodiversity and critical human life.
12. What happens in ocean darkening?
A. The growth of algae is decreasing.
B. Artificial light brightens the ocean.
C. Creatures move closer to the ocean top.
D. Less sunlight reaches deep into the ocean.
13. According to Tim Smyth, what is affected by ocean darkening?
A. The reproduction of fish.
B. The ocean water temperature.
C. The way to address climate change.
D. The survival of light-dependent animals.
14. What does the underlined word “integrated” probably mean in the last paragraph?
A. Renewed. B. Unified. C. Well-planned. D. Specialized.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Greenhouse Gases: A Driver of Ocean Changes.
B. Sunlight Loss: A Gradual Decrease of Marine Habitat.
C. Ocean Darkening: A Threat to Marine Life and Humans.
D. Plymouth Research: A Discovery of the Ocean’s Darkening.
【答案】12. D 13. D 14. B 15. C

One of the simplest ways to change you from feeling flat and doubtful to passion and self-belief is to stand up and move. It’s been shown that as little as 10 minutes of walking increases your mental alertness (警觉), energy and positive mood. You can often find a solution to a problem and a fresh new view from getting out of your mind and into physical activity.
Stop the criticism
You can be a great friend or a great enemy for yourself. There is no one who can do more damage to your self-belief than—you! ____20____. Are you lowering yourself or building yourself up? Accept your mistakes and failures. Let go of what you may be blaming (责备) yourself for, either in your professional life or personal. Forgive yourself, or you may stay stuck in blame.

【答案】参考范文:
Dear Peter,
Knowing you’re interested in traditional Chinese culture, I’d like to introduce an intangible cultural heritage to you.
I’d like to introduce Chinese kites, a folk art with over two thousand years of history. Kites come in various shapes — birds, dragons and flowers — and are often painted with bright patterns that express wishes and good luck. Skilled makers use bamboo frames and handmade paper or silk to create impressive works of art.
To protect this heritage, workshops and school programs are set up to teach kite-making techniques to young people and kite festivals are organized to deepen people’s appreciation. Additionally, museums preserve classic kite designs for visitors to learn its history and features. These measures not only help pass skills to younger generations but also raise their awareness of protection.
Welcome to China and have a hands-on experience!

A. Positive. B. Concerned. C. Doubtful. D. Uncaring.

B Artificial light brightens the ocean.
