Summer Reading Program
Welcome to Brown Summer Reading!
Brown High School has an independent reading program every summer. Our goals for independent reading include knowing oneself as a reader, understanding how to find what one loves to read for fun, and learning how to connect with others around books and reading. To that end, we offer you our summer reading program. You can see the introductions to reading clubs on this page and click different links to see more detailed information.
Every student must join at least one book club this summer.
Club 1: For students who like reading books in which famous people write about their own life.

Long ago, a hermit (隐士) journeyed through a lifeless desert when he discovered a cave. Tired from the journey, he entered to rest. Inside, he was amazed to see a bright light coming from a huge pile of gold coins at the cave’s center. Shocked and frightened, he escaped from the cave and ran down the road as fast as he could.
Not far away, three robbers (强盗) hiding behind a rock found the hermit running hurriedly. The chief robber stopped him and asked curiously why he was running. Breathless, the hermit replied, “I am running away from evil.” The robbers, seeing nothing behind him, laughed and insisted he show them this so-called bad thing. Though he hesitated, the hermit agreed and led them to the cave. Pointing to the gold coins, he said, “There it is. The evil is before your eyes.”
The robbers thought the hermit was mad and laughed off his warning. Delighted by their discovery, they sent the hermit on his way. Then, they began discussing how to deal with the gold. Too weak to carry it and afraid someone else might find it, they decided one of them should go and bring food from town. The third robber volunteered, secretly planning to poison the food and take the treasure for himself.
While he was away, the two remaining robbers planned to kill him upon his return and took his share of the gold. When the third robber returned with food, the others attacked and killed him. Afterward, they ate the poisoned food and died as well.
The hermit’s warning came true. The gold stayed hidden, shining quietly in the cave. Outside, the winds blew over the lifeless desert. The treasure was left behind, silent and untouched, as if waiting. Perhaps it was never meant to belong to anyone — only to show the cost of certain actions.
4. Why did the hermit run away from the cave?
A. He went out to ask for others’ help.
B. He wanted to report the discovery.
C. He thought the gold was a danger.
D. He was afraid of the three robbers.
5. What caused the three robbers’ death?
A. Fighting for the gold coins. B. Poisonous food from town.

6. Which of the following can best describe the hermit?
A. Wise and careful. B. Shy and energetic.
C. Lazy and stupid. D. Brave and polite.
7. What lesson can we learn from the story?
A. It’s wrong to trust strangers. B. It’s dangerous to be selfish.
C. It’s wise to avoid robbers. D. It’s unfair to share wealth.
C
Dogs are born with the ability of self-representation, according to a study published in 2019 in Animal Cognition. The tested dogs in the lab slowed down and hesitated before walking through uncomfortably small openings, showing that they rely on awareness of their body size to make decisions.
What about cats? Cats may seem solid (固体), but to some degree they’re actually liquid (液体) —at least according to one 2017 theoretical physics paper inspired by videos of cats squeezing (挤过) under doors, into small vases and down narrow gaps. Now, one researcher has taken this idea a step further, testing a group of cats to see when they act more like liquids or solids.
But cats are difficult to test in the lab. With help from his co-workers, Pongrácz built a special lab that they set up in the homes of 29 cat owners. In each home, the team attached two large, cardboard panels (嵌板) to a doorframe (门框): one with five holes of the same height but reducing width and another with five holes of the same width but reducing height. An owner stood on one side of the panel while the cat and the experimenter stood on the other. The cat had to squeeze from the experimenter’s side to the owner’s side through the holes while being filmed.
Thirty out of 38 cats finished the experiment. When faced with holes of different height, 22 cats hesitated to move through the shortest. When the holes different in width, only eight cats hesitated before approaching the narrowest hole. Most cats tried to squeeze through slim openings immediately without thinking of whether they fit or not.
In nature, this hesitation in the experiment to move through short holes may be a self-protection approach, Pongrácz says. If a cat squeezes through a hole without being able to see what’s on the other side, they may be making themselves easy to hurt potentially. The fact that they still hesitate in the safety of their homes suggests that the cats also rely on their body size to plan their approach.
8. Why does the author mention the experiment on dogs in Paragraph 1?
A. To introduce the topic. B. To compare dogs with cats.
C. To present the findings of a study. D. To attract attention to dog’s behaviors.
9. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Steps of the experiment. B. Subjects of the experiment.
C. Results of the experiment. D. Purposes of the experiment.
10. What do cats tend to consider when squeezing through a hole?
A. Area of a hole. B. Width of a hole. C. Height of a hole. D. Shape of a hole.
11. What does cats’ hesitation imply in the experiment?
A. They are solid instead of liquid.
B. They are trying to see the other side.
C. They are deciding a self-protection way.
D. They are waiting for their owners’ orders.
D
Scientists who study happiness know that being kind to others can improve well-being. Acts as simple as buying a cup of coffee for someone can boost a person’s mood. Everyday life offers many opportunities for such actions, yet people do not always take advantage of them.
In one experiment involving about 1,000 people, participants gave away hot chocolate on a cold winter’s day in a park. Both the person performing this kind act and the one receiving it were asked to fill out questionnaires. It turned out that both parties were in more positive moods than normal. At the same time, researchers also found that although the people giving out the hot chocolate saw the act as relatively unimportant, it really mattered to the receivers. It was clear that performers undervalued their impact: receivers felt significantly better than the kind actors expected. They tend to focus more on warmth than performers do.
However, missing the importance of warmth may stand in the way of being kinder in daily life. It is known that hot chocolate can make people feel good, but it turns out that hot chocolate given in kindness can make them feel surprisingly good. If people undervalue this effect, they might not bother to carry out these warm, pro-social behaviors.
In another experiment researchers had people play an economic game to examine what are sometimes called “pay it forward” effects. In this game, participants distributed money between themselves and a person whom they would never meet. People who had just received a kind act gave considerably more to an unknown person than those who had not. But the person who performed the kind act did not recognize that their generosity would lead to more kindness.
These findings suggest that what might seem a small kind act could matter a great deal to those who receive it. Given that these warm acts can enhance our own mood and brighten the day of another person, why not choose kindness when we can?
12. Why does the author mention “buying a cup of coffee”?
A. To change the topic. B. To give an example.
C. To present the theme. D. To explain a concept.
13. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. Research purpose. B. Research background.
C. Research expenses. D. Research findings.
14. Why should people realize the value of their kindness?
A. Kind people are respected.
B. Kind acts are hard to perform.
C. People will pass on kindness.
D. Being kind brightens their day.
15. What might be a suitable title for the passage?
A. Kindness and wealth B. Kindness goes farther
C. Kindness and health D. Kindness works better

根据首段中的“Inside, he was amazed to see a bright light coming from a huge pile of gold coins at the cave’s center. Shocked and frightened, he escaped from the cave and ran down the road as fast as he could.(在洞里,他惊奇地看到一束明亮的光从洞中央的一大堆金币里射出来。他又震惊又害怕,从山洞里逃了出来,以最快的速度沿着大路跑去。)”以及第二段中的“Breathless, the hermit replied, “I am running away from evil.”(隐士上气不接下气地回答说:“我是在逃离邪恶。”)”
根据第三段中的“The third robber volunteered, secretly planning to poison the food and take the treasure for himself.(第三个强盗自告奋勇,秘密计划在食物里下毒,把宝藏据为己有。)”以及第四段中“While he was away, the two remaining robbers planned to kill him upon his return and took his share of the gold. When the third robber returned with food, the others attacked and killed him. Afterward, they ate the poisoned food and died as well.( 趁他不在的时候,剩下的两个强盗打算在他回来时杀了他,抢走他那份金子。当第三个强盗带着食物回来时,其他强盗袭击并杀死了他。后来,他们吃了有毒的食物,也死了。)”可知,三名强盗中其中一个计划用毒药毒死其他人,而剩下的两人则计划杀死他以独占金币,结果三人互相伤害导致全部死亡,由此可知,他们因争夺金币而亡。故选A项。
根据第二段中“Breathless, the hermit replied, “I am running away from evil.” The robbers, seeing nothing behind him, laughed and insisted he show them this so-called bad thing. Though he hesitated, the hermit agreed and led them to the cave. Pointing to the gold coins, he said, “There it is. The evil is before your eyes.”(隐士上气不接下气地回答说:“我是在逃离邪恶。” 故选A项。
A 9. A 10. C 11. C

根据文章第一段“Dogs are born with the ability of self-representation, according to a study published in 2019 in Animal Cognition. The tested dogs in the lab slowed down and hesitated before walking through uncomfortably small openings, showing that they rely on awareness of their body size to make decisions.(根据2019年发表在《动物认知》杂志上的一项研究,狗天生具有自我认知能力。实验室里接受测试的狗在穿过令人不适的小开口时会放慢速度并犹豫,这表明它们依靠对身体大小的意识来做出决定)”和第二段“What about cats?(那么猫呢?)”可知,作者在第一段提到关于狗的实验是为了引出对猫的相关讨论,也就是为了引出话题。故选A。
根据文章第三段“But cats are difficult to test in the lab. With help from his co-workers, Pongrácz built a special lab that they set up in the homes of 29 cat owners. 【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“When faced with holes of different height, 22 cats hesitated to move through the shortest. When the holes different in width, only eight cats hesitated before approaching the narrowest hole.(当面对不同高度的洞时,22只猫犹豫着不愿穿过最短的洞。当洞的宽度不同时,只有八只猫在接近最窄的洞之前犹豫了一下)”可知,在面对不同高度的洞时,更多的猫会犹豫,这说明猫在挤过一个洞时更倾向于考虑洞的高度。故选C。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“In nature, this hesitation in the experiment to move through short holes may be a self-protection approach, Pongrácz says.(Pongrácz说,在自然界中,实验中穿过短洞时的这种犹豫可能是一种自我保护的方法)”可推知,在实验中,猫的犹豫意味着它们正在决定一种自我保护的方式。故选C。
In another experiment, researchers had people play an economic game to examine what are sometimes called “pay it forward” effects.
B 13. D 14. C 15. B

根据第三段中“However, missing the importance of warmth may stand in the way of being kinder in daily life. (然而,忽视温暖的重要性可能会阻碍我们在日常生活中变得更友善)”和“If people undervalue this effect, they might not bother to carry out these warm, pro-social behaviors.(如果人们低估了这种影响,他们可能就不会费心去做这些温暖的、亲社会的行为)”以及倒数第二段中“People who had just received a kind act gave considerably more to an unknown person than those who had not. But the person who performed the kind act did not recognize that their generosity would lead to more kindness.(刚得到善举的人给陌生人的钱比没有得到善举的人多得多。但是做了善举的人并没有意识到他们的慷慨会带来更多的善举)”可知,人们意识到善良的价值就会传递善意,故选C项。
【15题详解】
