人与社会——科学技术与工程,人类发明与创新
Plastic waste is an increasingly important problem. Up to now, only 9% of the plastics ever produced have been recycled. The rest remain on earth for hundreds of years. They wash out to the ocean to become rubbish, harm wildlife and break down into small plastics that can enter the human brain and other parts of our bodies.
首页
Recently, scientists have developed a new method to break down plastic waste with the help of water in the air. The researchers mixed a special metal and activated carbon(活性碳) with PET, the most common type of polyester(聚酯) plastic. Then they heated the mixture. After a short time, this broke the chemical connections in the polyester. Next, when the team left the material in the air, the mixture turned into TPA, a polyester material, and acetaldehyde, an industrial chemical. Finally, these valuable chemical materials were recycled.
首页
After the first success, researchers tested the method on different plastics and found it worked on polyester plastic only. That meant they didn’t need to separate different kinds of plastics. Also, when they added water, it stopped working because the amount (数量) of water in the air was just right.
The team’s next plan will be to use the method widely in industry.
“It’s hopeful that our technology can hugely reduce plastic pollution, lower the environmental footprint of plastics and help materials be reused instead of being thrown away,” researchers said. “It’s a leap towards a cleaner, greener future, and it shows how creative chemistry can solve world challenges in a way that joins hands with nature.”

人与自我——身心健康,珍爱生命的意识
You might hear a radio song or someone else singing and you can’t get it out of your head. This is known as an earworm(耳虫), a song or a tune(曲调) that stays in your head for a long time after you have heard it. 1 Don’t worry. There are some useful ways to get that song or tune out of our minds.
2 Elizabeth from a music website says that if you have just got a small part of the song keeping playing in your head, listening to the whole song might help to get that earworm out of your head.
首页
However, Srini, a teacher from a college, says it is not necessary to try too hard to get the earworm out of your head. Because this could make things worse. 3
Another way is to listen to a different song. It is also helpful to think about a different song.
“It’s nearly impossible to have two songs in your head at the same time,” music expert Kelly J. says, “because it’s too much for our brains!”
If those things don’t work, Kelly suggests one more way. She says you could chew gum(嚼口香糖). This keeps your mouth busy and may “kill” the earworm. 4 It is because you might end up having an even harder time trying to get the earworm out of your head.
首页
1. 2. 3. 4.
A. This can trouble most of us.
B. Dancing to the music is a good way.
C. One way is to listen to the whole song in your head.
D. Just accept that the earworm in your head will disappear soon.
E. However, she adds that you should not chew to the beat of the song.
