When I first got to Qingdao in 2015, I was a master’s student at the Ocean University of China. Qingdao mixing old buildings with new ones is a beautiful city by the sea. It was the place where I began to understand China — not just as a country but as a culture, a way of life, and a place that would profoundly shape my future.
The early days were challenging. As a Pakistani in a foreign country, everything was new — the language, the food and the social norms (规范). My Putonghua was limited to a few basic phrases, and I often nodded or pointed to communicate. Yet, with every struggle came a moment of success I clearly remember the first time I successfully ordered food at a noodle shop and the joy of making my first Chinese friend.
After completing my master’s degree, I joined Wuhan University for my PhD. During my PhD journey, one of the most memorable parts of my life was riding a bike with my friend around Shandong’s seaside villages. We set off with bikes and a spirit of adventure. The first few days were challenging — steep hills, changing weather, and being tired from riding a bike for a long time. However, as the days passed, the challenges changed into moments of pure magic. We rode bikes passing through ancient villages and stopped at markets where the smell of fresh baozi and seafood filled the air. The warmth of the locals left a lasting impression on us. “Brothers, you’re amazing! they would say, offering us water and snacks to keep us going on our journey.
Now, I work at Dalian Maritime University. Dalian reminds me of Qingdao, where my journey began, and has provided me with the opportunity to reflect on the journey. I’ve had — from the challenges of adapting to a new culture to the joys of exploring its depths. It’s here that I continue to build my career. believing that my dreams can reach higher with every passing year.

C. By asking his friends for help. D. By making phone calls to his family.
6. What can we know about the author and his friend during the bike trip?
A. They lost their way. B. They were supported by the locals.
C. They had their bikes repaired D. They felt anxious as the days passed.
7. What is the author’s attitude towards his future life in China?
A. Worried B. Hopeful C. Unclear. D. Doubtful

Many people wonder when the best time to exercise is. Experts have different opinions about morning, evening and afternoon workouts. To explore these differences further, let’s look at the benefits of exercising at different times of the day.
Dr. Jagim from Mayo Clinic Health System says, “Morning workouts make you feel like you do something good and start the day on a happy note.” After a morning workout, people feel good because of endorphins (内啡肽). Also, mornings are usually free from other things to do, allowing people to enjoy their afternoons and evenings without worrying about exercise. For morning workouts, Dr. Jagim says, “Eating a varied breakfast with carbohydrates, protein, and healthy fats is important. This gives energy for the workout.”
“However, for some people, waking up early to exercise is the last thing they feel like doing, and therefore, the case for evening workouts is more attractive. Your body works best in the early evening.” says Jake Erickson, a sports medicine specialist. “This is a good time to exercise. During this time, your body has time to wake up a bit by moving around throughout the day. Also, your body uses oxygen better in the evening. This helps you use your energy more efficiently when you exercise.”
A study with over 90,000 people found that exercising in the afternoon is better for your heart and helps you live longer than exercising in the morning or evening. This is especially true for older people. Dr. Gende, emergency physician at Mayo Clinic Health System, says that morning workouts might not be good for people who work late shifts or stay up late. For them, it’s better to sleep more in the morning and then do a workout in the middle of the day or early afternoon before their next shift.
While science gives ideas, experts agree the best time matches personal plans and energy. Consistency is more important than timing.
8. What does Dr. Jagim recommend for morning workouts?
A. Taking in more fats. B. Having a healthy breakfast
C. Drinking enough water. D. Avoiding staying up late the night before.
9. What might Jake Erickson agree with?
A. Early evening workouts suit late risers.
B. The later night exercisers wake up, the better.
C. All people’s bodies work best in the late evening.
D. Morning workouts set a positive tone for night workers.
10. Which group benefits most from afternoon workouts according to the study?
A. Young women. B. Teenagers C. Children. D. Older people
11. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. When is the Best Time to Exercise?
B. What is Important for a Healthy Body?
C. What Role Does Food Play During Workouts?
D. Why is Evening Exercise Good for Everyone?

Nonverbal communication can be anything that is not said. For example, if a man is smiling, you know he is probably happy. If a woman is touching her head, biting her lip, looking down or around quickly to avoid eye contact, she may be anxious. Nonverbal communication depends in some ways on a person’s background and culture. For example, in some cultures, pointing with a finger means that you are showing something. In other cultures, that is not good. Instead, people show things by using their whole hands
In a way, people of different genders (性别) are like people from different cultures. Scientists know that when men and women speak, they use words in different ways. They also know that men and women use different kinds of nonverbal communication. In general, women like to stand closer to the person they are talking to. This may help show that the woman is interested in what the other person says. They don’t make large movements with their hands when they speak. However, men would rather stand farther away from the person they are speaking to. This could be because many men prefer to have more privacy. When speaking with others, men also use large movements to help show what they are talking about.
Studies showed that men make less eye contact than women. When someone does not look at you often when you are speaking, it can make you feel like they are not listening. Sometimes, doing the same thing that the person you are speaking with is doing can help. It can show the person that you are interested in what he or she says. This is called mirroring. For example, if the woman you are speaking with is smiling, you may want to smile, too. If the man you are talking to has his arms crossed, you might also want to try crossing arms.
If you understand what people are saying with their bodies, it can help you know how they feel or what they really mean. Understanding nonverbal communication can also help you understand how to get your own feelings and ideas across to the person you are talking to.
12. What does the underlined word “that” refer to in paragraph 1?
A. A person’s background. B. Nonverbal communication
C. Using full hands to show. D. Pointing with a finger.
13. Why do men stand far away when talking?
A. They intend to show respect B. They dislike making eye contact.
C. They want more personal space. D. They are not interested in the topic.
14. Why does the author mention “crossing arms” in paragraph 3?
A. To tell a rude behavior. B. To give an example of mirroring
C. To describe a cultural difference D. To explain how to show disagreement
15. What does the last paragraph tell us about understanding nonverbal communication?
A. Its ways B. Its challenges C. Its importance. D. Its popularity.

Jane was a 10-year-old girl with messy brown hair. She lived with her hardworking mom, a nurse who often came home late. Jane tried to do everything by herself but always seemed to forget something. Her strict science teacher, Mr. Jeff, often got angry with her for being unprepared.
“Late again, Jane!” Mr. Jeff shouted loudly one Monday morning as Jane rushed into class, her shoes untied and books falling from her arms. “Where’s your homework? Still unfinished?”
Jane’s face turned red. “I... I did finish it this time,” she said quietly, searching her bag. Her heart dropped when she pulled out a messy math paper instead. The class laughed.
That night, Jane sat in her room, remembering how embarrassed (尴尬的) she felt “I’ll prove I can do better,” she promised herself. She stayed up late organizing her school things: notes and a homework report, Jane’s mom, coming home late from her nursing job, noticed the extra effort Jane was putting into her schoolwork. She asked Jane to go to bed early. But Jane said. “I really need to do well on this homework. Mr. Jeff has been so strict, and I don’t want to disappoint (使失望) him again.” Her mom nodded, understanding the importance of Jane’s efforts. Finally, everything was ready. Jane set two alarms (闹铃).
Unluckily, the next morning the alarms didn’t ring, because Jane had set them wrongly. Her mom knocked on her door and said, “Jane! The school bus is coming soon!” In a hurry to eat breakfast, brush her teeth, and find her shoes, Jane completely forgot her schoolbag by the door.
When she reached the school gate, Jane suddenly stopped. Her hands were empty. “Oh no! My schoolbag!” she cried. She could already imagine Mr. Jeff’s angry face.

I had some trouble with my alarms this morning,” she said, placing her homework on his desk. “My report is here.” Mr, Jeff checked Jane’s homework carefully, and then said, “This is... very complete.” For the first time, his serious face softened. “Good job, Jane.” Jane’s face lit up with joy. She felt a sense of accomplishment she hadn’t felt before. “Thank you, Mr, Jeff,” she said, her confidence growing. From that day on, Jane was more careful and organized, knowing that with effort and support, she could overcome her challenges.
