Ada Lovelace, born on December 10th, 1815, was the daughter of the famous poet George Gordon Byron. When Lovelace was young, at her mother’s insistence, tutors taught her mathematics and science. Women of that time were seldom exposed to such intellectually demanding studies, but her mother believed engaging in these studies would prevent Lovelace from developing her father’s moody and unpredictable personality. Lovelace was also forced to lie still for extended periods of time because her mother believed it would help her develop self-control.
Around the age of 17, Ada met Charles Babbage, a mathematician and inventor. They became friends, and the much older Babbage served as a mentor to Lovelace. Through Babbage, Lovelace began studying advanced mathematics with Professor Augustus de Morgan at the University of London.
Known as “the father of the computer”, Babbage invented the analytical engine, an early design for a computer. Lovelace was later asked to translate an article on Babbage’s analytical engine. She not only translated the original French text into English but also added her own thoughts and ideas on the machine, which included an algorithm for calculating Bernoulli numbers — a sequence of rational numbers with applications in number theory and analysis. Her notes ended up being three times longer than the original article. Her work was published in 1843 in an English science journal.
In her notes, Lovelace described how codes could be created for the device to handle letters and symbols along with numbers. She also theorized a method for the engine to repeat a series of instructions, a process that computer programs use today. Lovelace also put forward other forward-thinking ideas in the article. For her work, Lovelace is considered to be the first computer programmer.
Lovelace died in 1852, and her contributions to the field of computer science weren’t discovered until the 1950s. Her notes were reintroduced to the world in 1953. Since then, Ada has received many honors for her work. In 1980, the US named a newly developed computer language “Ada”, after Lovelace.
24. What is paragraph 1 mainly about?
A. Lovelace’s resistance to her strict mother.
B. The unusual way Lovelace was brought up.
C. Lovelace’s talent for mathematics and science.
D. The relationship between Lovelace and her mother.
25. What can be inferred about Lovelace’s notes from paragraph 3?
A. They were a simplified version for the public.
B. They included ideas extending beyond the original article.
C. They focused primarily on an algorithm for calculating Bernoulli numbers.
D. They were considered a minor supplement by the contemporary scholars.
26. Why is Lovelace honored as the first computer programmer?
A. Because she built Babbage’s analytical engine.
B. Because she created the first working computer.
C. Because she introduced key programming concepts.
D. Because she made computer science a discipline.
27. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To explain the origins of the first computer language.
B. To describe the challenges faced by women scientists in the 19th century.
C. To compare the contributions of Ada Lovelace and Charles Babbage.
D. To present the life and pioneering work of Ada Lovelace in computing.

Doctor Dolittle, the well-known, fictional naturalist who famously possesses the ability to converse with animals and understand their languages has now inspired a high-paying science prize aimed at cracking the challenge of interspecies communication. A grand prize of $500,000, awaits whichever research team can make real progress: not just decoding the language of another species but using it to draw a reply from an animal. Last week, an initial $100,000 went to a US team studying dolphin whistles — after decades of recording bottlenose dolphins in Florida, they identified around 20 distinct messaging whistles.
The Coller Dolittle Challenge financed by Jeremy Coller, a vegan and animal lover, is unashamedly modelled on the Turing test (图灵测试). That 20th-century test promotes efforts to design a machine capable of imitating human conversation, and became a touchstone in the evolution of AI. It also became a focus for concerns about machines tricking, even taking over, humans. The ability to commune with other species is likely to raise similar, unsettling questions as research progresses. If we were able to decode animal chatter, should this knowledge change how we treat them, whether as pets, labour or food? The prize presents a moral challenge and it forces us to reconsider our relationships with other species.
Philosopher Jonathan Birch, also a judge of the Jeremy Coller Centre, stressed that the Challenge is looking beyond the interspecies communication we have with pets, or that a farmer has with a sheepdog. Those relationships involve signalling and behavioural responses, Birch explains, “but that’s not telling us how animals communicate with each other... this prize is about understanding it so well that we can start to join the conversation.”
While Coller hopes his charity will reshape our attitude to animals, the truth is that even groundbreaking research has largely failed to move the dial on their welfare. Recent work on cephalopod’s (头足类动物) intelligence has not stopped plans to farm the creatures. We might one day be able to understand what animals are saying — but there is no guarantee we will listen.
28. Why is Turing test mentioned in the passage?
A. To stress its role and value in AI progress. B. To show its difference from the Challenge.
C. To warn of concerns the Challenge may face. D. To show its use in interspecies communication.
29. Which research would Birch approve of to win the prize?
A. People communicating with their pets. B. People directing sheepdogs during work.
C. Researchers recording how cattle communicate. D. Researchers interacting with birds using whistles.
30. What does the “move the dial” mean in the last paragraph?
A. Make a change. B. Win the prize.
C. Slow the process. D. Continue the research.
31. What’s the author’s attitude toward the practical effect of the research?
A. Optimistic. B. Doubtful. C. Objective. D. Dismissive.
D
A colorful colony of photosynthetic (光合的) cyanobacteria, known as blue-green algae (藻), has successfully powered a computer microprocessor for more than six months, according to a study published in the journal Energy & Environmental Science.
The algae-computer system was placed in the window of biochemist Paolo Bombell’s home. What he saw next really blew his mind: It sat there from February to August, and all the while it was working. And even after the microprocessor has been disconnected, the cyanobacteria device continues to produce current. “Given the right conditions of light, temperature and water, I cannot predict when it will stop,” said Bombelli.
Cyanobacteria harvest energy from sunlight and make it into food for themselves. For this study, the researchers put the power-providing microorganisms into a plastic and steel enclosure, about the size of an AA battery, along with an aluminum anode (铝正极). Throughout the experiment, the connected microprocessor was programmed to do a bunch of calculations, and then check its own work. It did this in a 45-minute period, followed by 15 minutes of standby, continuously for months with the cyanobacteria unit as its only power source.
Even though the algae rely on a light source to feed, the bio-system continued to produce enough power to run the microprocessor in the dark. The scientists basically put down this phenomenon to leftovers. When there was light, the cyanobacteria cooked up an over-abundance of food, and when it was dark the microorganisms kept chewing on the extras.
According to Chris Howe, senior author of the study, the results suggest that the little bio-based battery alternative could serve as a way to power small electronics without rare earth elements, which are in short supply and under growing demand. Plus, the system could also help bridge the electricity divide, providing another power supply for people in rural areas or low-income countries.
Though the experiment’s results are promising, it’s important to keep in mind that the computer processor tested uses very little energy — requiring only 0.3 microwatts to run. More research is needed to know exactly how much the tiny AA-battery-sized device could scale up. Howe said, Putting one on your roof isn’t going to provide the power supply for your house at this stage.”
32. Which of the following facts about the algae-computer system surprised Bombelli?
A. It can function without water.
B. It can convert light into power.
C. It can work for a long time.
D. It can stand high temperatures.
33. What can we learn about the bio-system from paragraph 4?
A. It stores light for later use.
B. It works normally in the dark.
C. It consumes little food in the dark.
D It produces food for people.
34. What will the research focus on next?
A. How the device will work on the roof
B. Whether the device’s size can be reduced.
C. Whether the device can play a bigger role.
D. How the device will adapt to new environments.
35. What is the best title for the passage?
A. The Future of Household Electricity Supply
B. Blue-Green Algae: A New Source of Food
C. An Algae-Powered Device Runs Computer for Months
D. A Promising Bio-Battery Creates the Miracle

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Leo stared at the blank screen of his laptop. The deadline for the short story contest was in two days, and he had written nothing. Ideas like spaceships and magical forests swirled in his mind, feeling chaotic. Every time he tried to write, they slipped away.
“Just write something,” his friend Mia had said. But for Leo, the real problem was pressure. Winning felt like a direct step toward his dream. He wanted the story to be perfect, and this desire paralyzed him.
He looked out at the old oak tree in his backyard. There, in its branches, stood the tree house he built with his brother Sam years ago. A wave of nostalgia (怀旧) hit him. That simple structure had been a pirate ship, a castle, a secret base — the setting for countless adventures fueled by pure imagination.
Then, softly, an idea formed. What if his story was about a memory? A real feeling from his own life? He opened his laptop again, pushed thoughts of judges aside, and began to type.
In his story, he wrote: The tree house wasn’t much. But to Ben, it was a whole universe...
Words began to flow. He wrote about the smell of wood, the echo of Sam’s laughter, the secret code on the trapdoor. He was no longer writing for the contest, but for himself — for the boy who believed a few planks (木板) could be anything.
When his mother called him for dinner, Leo was surprised. Three pages filled the screen. They weren’t perfect, but they were real. For the first time in weeks, excitement replaced dread. He finally had a beginning!
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;

【答案】Dear Chris.
I’m writing to inform you of a change to the cultural activity scheduled this Friday.
Unfortunately, due to the paper-cutting teacher’s sudden illness, the workshop has been rescheduled as a Chinese calligraphy experience session. It will still be held in the school art room from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. this Friday. During the class, we will learn basic brush techniques and have the chance to practice writing some simple yet meaningful Chinese characters under the guidance of an experienced instructor.
I sincerely apologize for this unexpected change and truly hope you can understand the situation.
Best regards,
Li Hua
第二节(满分25分)
【67题答案】
【答案】
The next day Leo found Mia at her usual spot in the library. He handed her the printed pages. “I wrote something,” he said. Mia read it, her expression softening into a smile. “Leo, this has real feeling. It’s honest, and that makes it perfect in its own way.” Her words lifted the remaining pressure. Together, they revised the story. Mia suggested a stronger opening, and Leo added more about the tree house. The once chaotic ideas in his mind now had a clear direction. He understood now: his short story didn’t need a grand idea, just a true memory.
Two weeks later, the contest results were announced. Leo scanned the list anxiously. Then he saw it: Third Place: Leo Bennett. He was surprised and overjoyed. While he didn’t win the top prize, he had found something more valuable: his own voice and confidence. That afternoon, he opened his laptop under the oak tree. The blank screen was no longer daunting; it was a space of possibility. He had a beginning. He started typing a new story, his fingers moving with surety. His writing dream was still on the horizon, but now, he knew he was walking firmly toward it.

Raise your hands, please. Wow, there are a lot of hands. Doctors recommend that teens get at least eight to ten hours of sleep each night. However, in practice, many teens struggle to make IT. This is often due to a conflict between nature and modern life. During our teenage years, our body clocks tend to move forward. This natural change makes us want to go to sleep and wake up much later. However, as society usually demands we get up early, the key is finding a way to fall asleep earlier. Later on in the lesson will be talking about how stress and screen addiction can also impact our sleep. But first we're going to study the ten, three, two, one sleep role. This means that ten hours before bed, you stop drinking tea, coffee and other energy drinks. Your last meal of the day should be at least three hours before bed. Homework and other work should be completed at least two hours before bed. One hour before bed, you shut off all screens. These tips will help ready your body for sleep and help you drop off to sleep much more quickly. Good morning, everyone. It's time for our weekly health class.
