"Everything happens for the best,my mother said whenever I faced disappointment.4If
you can carry on,one day sonething good will happen. And you'll realize that it wouldn't
have happened if not for that previous disappointment."
Mother vas right,as I discovered after graduating from college in 1932.I had decided to
try for a job in radio, then work ny way up to sports announcer.I hitchhiked(搭便车)to
Chicago and knocked on the door of every station-and got turned doun every time.In one
studio,a kind lady told ne that in most cases big stations couldn't risk hiring inexperienced
person."Go out in the remote areas and find a snall station that'1l give you a chance,"she
said.I went back hone to Dixon,Illinois.
While there was no radio-announcing jobs in Dixon,my father said Montgomery Ward
had opened a store and vanted a local athlete to nanage its sports department.Since Dixon
was where I had played high school football,I applied. The job sounded just right for me.
But I wasn't hired. My disappointment must have shown."Everything happens for the
best,"Mom reminded me.Dad offered me the car to hunt for jobs.I tried WOC Radio in
Davenport, lowa. The program director,a wonderful Scotsman named Peter MacArthur, told
me they had already hired an announcer.
As I left his office,my frustration boiled over(沸滥,发怒).I asked aloud,.“Hou can a
fellow get to be a sport announcer if he can't get a job in a radio station?"I vas waiting for
the elevator when I heard MacArthur calling,'What was that you said about sports?Do you
know anything about football?"Then he stood me before a nicrophone and asked me to
broadcast an inaginary gane. The preceding autumn,my tean had won a game in the last 20
seconds vith a 65-yard run.I did a 15-minute boost to that play, and Peter told me I would be
broadcasting Saturday's game!

Do you have frightening dreams while sleeping?According to an email interview by
clinical psychologist and sleep expert Dr.Michael Breus, roughly 5 percent of the general
population has at least one bad dream per week.Nightnares typically happen during REA
sleep, during the middle and later parts of the night.
There is no exact explanation for nightnares, but Breus says it's possible that they help
the brain practise, prepare for and even predict difficult or dangerous experiences in vaking
life.Of course,it's possible that nightaares,like dreams in general,don't have a prinary
function that they're a by-product of other activities in the body. But nost sleep scientists
think that dreams and nightmares exist for soue purposes.
One study found the nost common nightmare was falling, followed by dreams of being
chased, feeling lost, and feeling trapped. Then vhy do nightmares happen?
"Certain circumstances and characteristics make some people more likely to have
nightmares than others, says sleep medicine specialist Dr.Barry Krakov. He thinks people
who've been traunatized(使受精神创伤)are certainly at a higher risk of nightmares
Examples are offered of those who have suffered criminal attacks,or who have been in
life-threatening accidents.People with some degree of sensitivity in their biological make-up
are also more likely to have bad dreams,so they're nore common in people who suffer from
anxiety or depression,or who use excess drugs or alcohol. The traditional belief often has it
that nightmares are the result of eating too nuch rich food before bedtine, but it is still
uncertain whether this is true. One study from 2015 did find a link betveen eating dairy or
hot foods before bedtime and having disturbing dreans, but the study authors noted that this
couldn't be proven definitely because the data was self-reported and there vere a lot of other
factors to consider.
Hovever, research in recent decades has shown that people who suffer from sleep
disorders are also more likely to have nightmares.
21 What nay Dr.Breus agree with about nightuares?
A They happen for certain purposes.
B.They are similar to daydreams.
C.They possibly help predict future events.
D.They come true once in a while.
2.Who does Dr.Krakow think tends to suffer nightmares?
John who often stays up late.
B.Peter who has had terrible experiences.
C.Jack uho is sensitive to alcobol.
D.Paul uho sleeps soundly at night.
3).How does the traditional belief explain nightmares?
A They are often caused by irregular bedt imes.
1 They are based on disturbing life experiences.
C They are the consequence of negative feelings.
They are related to what is taken before bedtime.
3L.From which section of a website is the text probably taken?
A.Mental health.B.Life experiences.C.Eating habits.D.Popular culture.

of seabirds and even fallen in fresh Antarctic snov. They are even appearing inside humans.
Now,new research suggests that a simple, cheap neasure may significantly reduce the
level of microplastics in water fron your tap(水龙头):boiling and filtering(过)it.Ina
study published Wednesday in Environmental Science Technology Letters, researchers
from China found that boiling tap water for just five ninutes-then filtering it after it cools
could renove at least 80 percent of its nicroplastics.
Crucially, this process relies on the vater containing enough calciun carbonate (
to trap the plastics. In the study, boiling hard vater containing 300 milligrams of calcium
carbonate led to an almost 90 percent drop in plastics. But in samples with less than 60
milligrans of calciun carbonate, boiling reduced the level of plastics by just 25 percent.
Additionally, the research didn't include all types of plastics. The team focused only on three
common types -polystyrene,polyethylene and polypropylene-and they didn't study
other chemicals previously found in water such as vinyl chloride.
Still, the findings shor a potential path forvard for reducing microplastic exposure-a
task that's beconing increasingly difficult.Even bottled water, scientists found earlier this
year, contains 10 to 1,000 times more nicroplastics than originally thought.
Scientists are still trying to determine hou harnful microplastics are-but what they do
know has raised concerns. The new study suggests boiling tap vater could be a tool to linit
intake."The way they demonstrated how nicroplastics were trapped through the boiling
process was nice,Caroline Gauchotte-Lindsay,an environmental engineer of the University
of Glasgow in Scotland who was not involved in the research, tells New Scientist.'We should
be looking into upgrading drinking water treatment plants so they remove microplastics."
12 Hov does the author present the issue in the first paragraph?
⊥By quoting an expert..
B.By defining a concept.
C.By giving examples.
D.By providing statistics.
What determines the effectiveness of trapping microplastics in water?
I.The hardness of water.
B.The length of cooling time.
C.The frequency of filtering.D.The type of plastic in water.
JL What does the author try to illustrate by mentioning bottled water in paragraph 4?
L The inportance of plastic recycling.B.The severity of the microplastic problem.
C.The danger in overusing pure vater.
D.The difficulty in treating polluted water.
3i.What is Gauchotte-Lindsay's suggestion about?
A.Choice of nev research methods.
B.Possible direction for further study.
C.Need to involve more researchers.
D.Potential application of the findings.

Not all great writers are great spellers. If you want to be published,it's vital to subait a

tolerate a writer who does not take the trouble to spell words correctly.
I keep tuo reference books close-by on ny desk:dictionary and thesaurus(同义词词典).
I don't trust my laptop's spellchecker.37 Of course, these days there are plenty of

fron other words whose meanings are similar, but not identical. It vill also usually shoy how
the word is pronounced.
In addition,I have an old tuo-volume copy of the Shorfer Orford Dictionary, picked up
a few years ago in a bookshop sale for just 99 pence.Of course,with its 2,672 pages,it's not
exactly short. It contains around 163,000 words, plus word combinations and idiomatic
phrases.39 However,if I need to check the origin of a yord or to look up examples
of its usage,there's nothing better.
For well over a hundred years the most influential English dictionary was Samuel
Johnson's Dictionary of the English Language published in 1755."To make dictionaries is
dull(乏味)ork,”rrote Johnson,illustrating one definition of“dull".40Afew
